    In case anyone hasn’t figured it out. This is simply a technical concept for what the SL3 will have on a much better foundation. The L Alliance helps sigma sell products and allows Leica to have a high volume test bed.

    Sigma is really admirable for their persistence in trying to enter the camera market. They have been making their efforts for so long that even some of the prominent brand names, Minolta, Yashica, Contax, Rollei, Ricoh have all gone into history. I‘ve never seen one of their cameras being successful in the market. Yet they keep trying for decades. I really want to buy one for that reason. Unfortunately I am not rich enough.

      If you ever shoot with a Foveon sensor camera (especially the sd Quattro) you'll never look at other cameras the same way again. Unfortunately the fp L isn't a Foveon camera and the sdQ has some unfortunate design choices such as using Sigma's SA-mount system which makes the camera larger and makes adapting nearly any other lens mount impossible without expensive optical adapters that no one will make. Still, my sdQ with the 18-35mm f/1.8 lens is such a powerful tool that I almost never swap to the other lenses I own. It is my go-to photography camera unless I'll be in low light.
      No one makes anything like the sdQ and the only cameras that can compete with it in terms of detail and color quality are medium format cameras that cost ten times the price.

    Being relatively new to the camera world, just a couple of years, I find all of the compromises confounding. Coming from the Audio world where there are specifically tailored devices for each task at all price points, with the point of diminishing returns beginning at a pretty low price point. But with cameras, its odd. Video body cameras for photography. Photography bodies for video. What's more, people are okay with photo bodies for video but not video bodies for photo. And if you don't spend a grand, at least, most basic quality necessities aren't there. It would be like a microphone preamp that can't record all instruments at all.

    • @DanielBrklyn
      @DanielBrklyn 3 года назад +2

      The reason is that a lot of devices in audio are just behind the scenes, except for the microphone, and they don't define the user like a camera does. A person using a camera also considers it as a necklace and a signaling device. Someone will buy the Sigma camera to show the world they don't follow trends and will choose a different quirky camera and will use it to define themselves as a quirky person who swims against the tide. It also becomes a conversational piece and a way to wow your clients since you have a camera that no one else does. if you use a Canon 5d or Sony A7 every one else has those cameras and it is harder to stand out.

    • @CanditoTrainingHQ
      @CanditoTrainingHQ 2 года назад

      The reason is because standards are artificially risen with cameras due to smart phone competition.
      In reality, "video body" vs "photography body" is a very small distinction if we compared to other industries. Also photo dedicated cameras like the Panasonic S1R still record 4k 60 fps, which is beyond the resolution and frame rate movies will ever need (yes its not all about that, but still).
      It's more like these are microphone prearms that also do nearly everything in the studio, but it just so happens that Apple comes out with a phone that replaces it, so any feature is judged by how effectively it differentiates what is already in everyone's pocket.

    CineD mentioned that this camera has hybrid autofocus, meaning it has both contrast detect and phase detect, but never at the same time. It depends on the crop factor (!) you choose. Phase detect will only work in x1.0 and x1.53. But the best dynamic range you get at x1.24, according to Sigma. And the best resolution between x1.3 and x2.48. This camera has a lot of great features, just not simultaneously it seems.
    Strange camera indeed. I would love to take it for a spin!

    Well, I commend Sigma for again releasing something that bucks the trend. Is quirky and different.
    Sadly it will be another camera hardly anyone buys.
    Faced with this or the A7RIV, why would anyone pick the Sigma? If it were half the price, then Sigma would really be onto something. Shame. I'll keep waiting for Sigma to release a modern Foveon stills camera. Love Sigma lenses and the Foveon stuff.

    Sigma could turn this into a seriously interesting body by introducing a couple of lenses with leaf shutters. Take a look at the old Pentax Q system. I think a 28mm F2.0 and an 85mm F2.0 with flash synch at 1/500th sec. (or better), along with the hybrid phase detect auto-focus could be worth considering. At that point, they think about upgrading the original fp with faster processing and hybrid phase detect auto-focus, and maybe a 26MP size sensor (for DCI-ish 6k video). That would add a significant option to the L-mount system.

      I'm just waiting for a Foveon based L-Mount camera from them. I can pretty much forgive any weakness if they keep the look the way it is with earlier versions. The aspect ratio shenanigans look like worlds of fun. That's one gripe I have with, well, every digital camera I've used. Sure, I can crop in post, but having frame lines or black bars to go to some non-standard aspect ratios would be an amazing tool for composition, and it'd almost surely be trivial to have most cameras allow for, say, 3:1 aspect ratio on the display.

    I can’t believe all the Sigma hate in these comments, it’s ridiculous. Nobody’s forcing you to buy it, chill out.
    Also, it looks like Chris and Jordan took it out in what I would consider averse conditions, and with respect I don’t think they fully factored them into their review. I have a hard time believing “it’s really not that cold” when there’s still clearly huge amounts of ice and snow, naturally that is going to affect the battery life even if it IS low capacity to begin with, which I don’t doubt. Also, on a bright sunny day with harsh light reflected off white snow, of course you’re going to want an EVF! I know Chris prefers using a viewfinder anyway, and while I understand, I’m sure in a lot of other situations, the camera would be very usable without.
    At the end of the day, it’s still the cheapest high-resolution full-frame body in a fun, lightweight package. It’s much cheaper than the comparable bodies from Panasonic, Leica, Nikon, and Canon, for significantly more resolution.
    I think Sigma is to be commended for the release. I love how they as a company just do things differently, there’s too many people in the photography community who get caught up in specs races and popularity contests.

    The only way I can make sense of Sigma's product strategy is by assuming that they expect global shutters to become widespread, and that they're working towards having a thoroughly thought-through shutterless platform ready when that happens. That would actually make sense for Sigma, as it's really hard to take on an incumbent like Sony by doing the same things as they are, but perhaps more manageable if you can get out ahead of industry trends in a way that they can't (if Sony or Canon started evolving their cameras in this sort of direction now it would irretrievably taint their brand, whereas nobody has high expectations of Sigma in this space).
    On a related note, this camera reminds me of a comment Barney Britton made in Roger Cicala's Lensrentals podcast: Paraphrasing, he observed that global shutters were a "next big thing", and that they would enable new and modular form factors.

    The internal H264 seems much improved from the previous version. I still wish it had log, and ideally some 8k mode. The fact that 12bit mode is worse than 10bit is concerning...to say the least. The whole point of writing to a fast external SSD is to avoid read/write limitations of the camera. But clearly it's struggling to process the data.

    • @shlawchablaas

      I am worried that the appeal of that is diminishing. Pixel shift accomplishes the same goal of beating the Bayer pattern and the stacking software will only get better at correcting motion. On the flip side, higher resolution bayer cameras accomplish basically the same goal of having enough color information to correctly render small details. A full-frame foveon will use a low-volume and tricky to manufacture 20 mp sensor and will probably cost about $4000+, at which point the upcoming 90 megapixel (22.5 mp on the blue and red channels) eos r5s will be tempting competition, probably with better high iso, dynamic range, and autofocus. I really hope this next foveon is something special, though.

    I just can't figure out what Sigma was thinking releasing this pre-production version for review. First option is that this is essentially the final product. If so, they are in trouble because pretty much all the high profile RUclips reviewers have politely, but thoroughly trashed it. I've never seen such bad reviews for any camera. Second option is that, there will be massive changes in the final version. In which case, why in the world would you release it for review now? When the final version is released, you will already have tons of bad reviews in place and pretty much every potential buyer will have written it off. Personally, I'm going with option # 1. Sigma may be able to tweak the AF a bit, though from what I've seen, no amount of tweaking is going to maker it competitive. But, there is no way, firmware tweaks are going to fix that ridiculous bolt on VF, or add a useable grip or a tillable LCD, just to name a few. Sigma obviously has some great engineering chops. Their lenses are right up there with the best. But their camera division? What are they thinking? What executive looked at that thing and said "yeah, that'll sell well and make us a nice profit"? Geral Undone says this camera makes no sense. The Sony A7R4 blows the stills away, The Sony A7S3 blows the video away, it has dreadful auto focus, needs the EVF and now becomes pricey. What's the point? Not recommended.

    Sigma should have come up with a better video centric camera instead: at least 4k 60fps 12 bit raw through usb. Good internal options H265 4k 60p 422, log profile, a good lut, false colour, full size HDMI, IBIS, good rolling shutter, better interface. I'm looking forward to the Sigma FP2 :)

      @@professionalpotato4764 the autofocus works well with stills. That’s why I kept my S1R, it was the continuous AF of the for video that was poor, that’s why I got rid of the S1H. I don't understand why Sigma keeps putting these super weird, extremely compromised cameras to the market. I'd get it if they performed well in some super specific niche that nobody else con compete with, but they just flat out don't perform...at all.

    • @professionalpotato4764
      @professionalpotato4764 3 года назад +1

      @@basic-decaf Did you even watch the video? The 12 bit raw is line skipped and soft. There's no internal 10 bit h264 or h265. Rolling shutter that's crazy, 7.5 dynamic range in 8 bit shooting. That's more potato than an entry level Canon DSLR that goes for $500.

    • @basic-decaf

      @@professionalpotato4764 Entry level Canon DSLRs can't do 61MP, sorry. I did watch the video, and he clearly said internal 4K recordings outperformed a7r4.
      Literally his first point in the video section at 9:38. Yup, it's a "$500 entry level Canon DSLR" ... yet outperforming a7r4.. Yeah, keep trying.
      12-bit RAW is line-skipped for the moment, but he also clearly stated 10-bit RAW is flawless... yes, that's 10-bit RAW direct to an SSD without dropping $1,000 on an Atomos kit. My Sony FX3 can't even do that and I paid $4,000 for it.
      Firmware can also handle ANY compression issues, like what? This isn't even on the market yet and Sigma releases new firmware every 2 months. And even then, for $2,500 it still outperforms anything in its class.

    • @professionalpotato4764
      @professionalpotato4764 3 года назад +2

      @@basic-decaf Thing is, you don't need 61mp for video. Even 45mp is pushing it. There's too much sacrificed for the resolution. Poor iso performance, poor rolling shutter, poor dynamic range. 61mp for stills, sure if you're printing to like a wall sized photo. If not, it's useless.

You know that the processing power required to downscale 61MP to 8MP cleanly 120 times per second AND to compress those frames at the same time would require a lot more camera and use a lot more power, right? You know that log profiles generally worsen footage, right?

  • @albedo0point39

    It's basically a sensor in a metal box. There's no way a non-mainstream camera company like Sigma is going to pay the development costs on IBIS, modern shutter design etc. etc. - so this is a nice little product to get out into the market - just the box and the software development to get it shipped.
    I was thinking about it as a great minimalist travel camera, alongside something like a Ricoh GR III, this is the camera you pull out for those great cityscapes and vistas at high resolution. Even for that though it's too compromised - I'd want at least that rear screen to swing up, and I'd want integrated wifi to help get images off it.

      The fp L is smaller in every dimension than the a7c. It is a larger size difference than the a7c is compared to the a7 III. Since you don't even have to buy the EVF, yes it is actually the smallest. You can put anything you want to it or keep it that size. Just like you could add a giant flash on the a7c and make it larger if you wanted to.
