Always love the music choice, takes the images to another level. Phillip you always amaze me how you can turn a camera review into a mini movie with beautiful footage, always look forward to your content.
This really is the true successor to the 1080 BMPCC. I used that camera for years, so picking this up was like meeting an old friend who had matured and gone up in the world. It's actually FUN to use too. The size and weight are such a big deal! Incredible bit of kit
@@marianoguy Yes, it's just cinema DNG RAW which is fairly straightforward. Most of my work at the moment involves colour grading and sending off the files for someone else to edit, so I usually do the colour work in Premiere, then export to DNxHD.
Despite all its claims to fake though it doesn’t have dynamic range!! After sound quality, a high dynamic range is the most important attribute for determining image quality. The specs don’t matter if, after RUclips compresses the shut out of it, it could still look like it was shot on a smart phone
This little camera produces some of the best video I have ever seen from any camera, especially with regard to colors- best colors I have ever seen. I don't know why one would buy this for photography, but I know exactly why one would buy it for video- it's brilliant! It's the single most compact cinema quality camera I know of. With the right lens, you could strap it to just about anything. I am buying one used.
Corey S. Vaughn I'm not sure why Fuji uses X-Trans... looks very strange when scaled to 100%. But Foveon looks amazing blown up! But not without constraints according to the fp team
@@secondwaveprod yes I'm aware, but in their stills camera their "oddball" pattern was actually very nice, whereas in the hybrid X-T3 & X-T4, Fujifilm's "oddball" pattern produces some strange, squiggly results
@Gap have any data shown that it uses sony's? or simply uses the towerjazz one which Panasonic supplies their S series?

This is the kind of review you would pay to see in theaters! Great job, as always. I love the camera, but I'm still fighting in my mind between Sigma FP, Sony A7c or Fujifilm XT4 ... The more I see ... The more confused I get! ...
Thanks, The most well rounded RAW recording function demonstration and presentation on the Sigma FP amount all the videos I had seen on RUclips. I'm an FP user too, I like putting Leica R lens on it for architectural video works.
This is an amazing tool in the right hands. Everything you could possibly need. Codec + compact. Don't let the name fool you, Sigma created a masterpiece.
I just discovered it. Seen many reviews. I hope to buy it someday. Some reviews are mixed, but the negative reviews I'm not buying. I love the strengths. Very unique. Masterpiece? It could very well be.
There is something magical about the stills this produces. I shoot my M lenses w it and it is amazing. Steve huff did a good video on the photo strengths of the FP.
@@philipbloom Been wondering this as well, most samples I've seen look good, but some people have said it's an issue with blowing grass, fluorescent lights, etc.
@@philipbloom I haven't had any issues as of yet. Im shooting mostly street and some documentary. I find myself grabbing the Sigma FP over my SL2 often. Something about shooting with it is addictive.
Thanks for the review Philip. I love your calm, honest and positive approach, and mix of info and images! I always felt this was a special camera since seeing Johnnie’s review at CineD - the colours were amazing and organic-looking. As a GH5 user looking to upgrade to full frame, I was sorely tempted... but then we had a raft of amazing cameras hit the market and it kind of got pushed to the back of the line.
Mr Bloom, I would love for you to do a follow up on the original FP, since so much has happened with firmware since then. A suggested cinema camera rig for tiny budget feature productions from you would be very welcome. I'd pay for such a pro guide.
If only results count, then this is one of the best consumer video camera there is. Image quality is just fantastic and the edited footage at the end is here to prove it.
Love the balance of your reviews .. at times, and probably intentionally I feel as though you are making a movie to be played in a board room conference room screen by the product’s company executives. Many, if not all of them never having actually used their products as tools to tell stories.. as you do.. I love that you have given them a visually and artistically compelling reason to improve the camera to what it could be.. you certainly did a nice job in your subtle way getting the Sony A7siii to what it could be .. maybe sigma will do the same .. they do make such great lenses now.. they should make a camera to match..
Edit: the “off” profile now has the sharpness removed since firmware 3.0. It has been like this for a while and I think the negative reviews of the fp now are sort of outweighed by the brilliant software support the fp has, not to mention ssd drives are now a third of the price of when this video was made, so that’s basically a compression feature - I’m doing an 8hr shoot in fhd 12 bit and the data rate doesn’t go over 700bmps!! So uncompressed cinedng if you’re sticking to 1080p is now easy - note that with latest firmware, ssd can only go up to 2TB, but for £150 now, you get a 2TB ssd. My custom housed £150 Samsung 980pro laughs at a £600 2TB cf express card. Sony doesn’t have anywhere near the same level of support - otherwise I would’ve gone for a zv-e1 but that thing is purposely crippled to overheat and you know there’s not going to be any updates because the a7s 3 didn’t get any Thank you for pointing out the baked in sharpness in the “off” mov mode. That is a an absolute stomach clencher that the iPhone 14 is also doing the same thing 🤮. There I was excited to finally match my zeiss biogon lens and there they bake in all that sharpness so that it will be absolutely pointless or should I say sooty? 😅. WTF Edit: firmware 3.0 fixes this.
I feel rather cheated! Was expecting a 2 hour monster review! In all seriousness, a great review of what could be a great camera, It seems like such a frustrating camera as it is so close to being great. Wonderful music that reflected the sorrow that this isn't a better camera!
Great coverage of the fp and beautiful footage to finish it off. I simply love the image from this camera in 12bit cDNG and grading it is such a pleasure. I mostly just grade short sequences direct off the T5 SSD on my 2016 MacBook Pro and it handles in Resolve beautifully but I agree a lossless compressed raw like braw to the SSD would be the icing on the cake 🤞
You had to wait until now didn’t you Mr. Bloom. I FINALLY pulled the trigger on the FP, and three days later your video falls into my suggested feed like 😭 In all seriousness, great content as always. I’m having a blast learning the limitations of this little guy. Hoping to unlock its full potential!
I actually got rid of my Canon 5D MK 4 because of sensor noise (purple banding when lifting exposure in post) and replaced it with the Sigma Fp and I was absolutely blown away by the quality of the image out of the Fp ( I mostly do Astrophotography). I will be getting into the video aspects come summer. This swap was the best decision I ever made. The Canon 5D MK4 is a very overrated camera in every way.
my god your work is such a relief when one hears the variety and the relevance of music you use. So tired of hearing the same pre-made music everywhere. And indeed all of this is super well done and interesting
Thank you Philip. This video came out of the left-field but I've always loved this camera as a concept. It's funny how everyone's hammering Panasonic for their AF, and rightly so. But, I think everyone's so fond of Panasonic that they would like to see them be competetive in that area.
I find that SlimRAW is excellent for saving space in post with the DNG files. I shoot 12-bit and always offload as 10-bit log with SlimRAW. This produces lossless compressed files that are usually less than 1/3 of the original size and it is blazing fast, it takes the same time as straight copy from the SSD. And I know others compress to 5:1 lossy or even smaller on offload, which lowers footprint further. Due to the RED patent issues I am fairly certain we are not getting compressed DNG in the future, but an improvement Sigma can easily make is to provide 10-bit uncompressed log footage instead or in addition to the 12-bit linear. This will shave 1/6 of the SSD storage space without any noticeable quality loss. I recall both Canon and Panasonic do this with their raw capable cameras.
Another excellent review. Thank you for the amount of work you put into these. It is greatly appreciated and does not go unnoticed. I always find myself immersed in every one of your videos and that is what truly differentiates you from every other "RUclipsr." I use the term youtuber loosely as you are much much more than that. Anyways just wanted to say thank you but couldn't express it in fewer words!

It's future, not unlike it's present, is as a niche camera capable of beautiful images for those willing to put in the effort to discover their preferred settings and work through the challenges presented by it's form factor and menu system.
thinking about grabbing one for wedding filming but now I'm not so sure this is the camera for me on such a run and gun style... but man 12bit raw for $1300 on ebay is tempting
I've been hoping they'd come up with a Sigma FP mark II with a screen that either articulates or flips. I know they can keep it small. But it'd get in the way of using a cage. So I dunno. They fixed so much with it over time though, like you didn't even get playback on Cinema DNG at first.
Very nice review and beautiful footage from the FP! I was so close to buying this camera last year but the lack of IBIS and EVF as you stated were too big for me to give up. Such a pleasing image though!
my needs for sigma FP in future firmware update or 2nd generation : ① 3:1 or 5:1 dng raw to SSD or whatever ② 4K 60 fps raw(at least 10 bit please ), even in Crop mode S35 is nice ③ allow raw video with electronic stabilization ④ More control on focus peaking ( current tiny screen without big output monitor can not show the peaking accurately). by saying that , Sigma FP it''s still my most favorite run and gun gear to take out and shoot.
I tried this camera a few times lately. It has a gorgeous image, particularly in RAW when you assign the BM colourspace to the clips in Davinci, you can get a lot of dynamic range. One thing I noticed was that it had better (less) rolling shutter than most mirrorless counterparts. Sigma really should make a bigger version of this camera, I don't see why they want to make it so small, not exactly clever when you end up rigging it. Nice video as always Phil.
RAW is/was the future but it was hijacked by RED. If they were to replace SD's with m.2 slots in next gen, we could continue with uncompressed for a bit, but it's kinda painful, and the availability other compressed raw codecs to transcode to on pc is also sad. BM colourspace does fuckall for DR, stills cameras have great DR and none shoot log or any of these fancy video standards, any idiot can pull down the contrast slider, raw is raw. Rolling shutter is apparently better because of line skipping, the FP apparently does not down-sample, or at least not in the traditional way of doing it after the de-bayer, but I doubt it's complete skipping, since noise ain't that bad, but then again, why would cropping and dropping resolution decrease the rolling shutter, it's a bit confusing. I strongly disagree with the bigger, if anything it can be made even smaller, like the NEX 5 or something, it could be even a bit thinner, and then the grip should be made ~as deep as the shortest lens they make for it, (The 45mm is still way big, but then again, the lenscap lenses like those from MS Optics are a bit too extreme, something like the samyang 35mm 2.8, I'd say) could give a nice boost to the battery capacity. LCD could be made to be 16:9 and that would give space for EVF in top left, next to that could be an AUX display, to show stuff, since if main screen was 16:9, you wouldn't want shit cluttered over it.
@@rockrl98 can I ask you if you used the FP? You were happy with all those small buttons closer together and the camera itself so small that you can barely hold it in your hand? You think it should be even smaller? Crikey... when you import the raw files into Davinci you can chose to give it the BM settings on the clip and select preserve highlights. That way you have a nicer starting point. But hey, raw is raw.
@@HuFilms Nicer is subjective, I think more people are familiar with editing photos, so then it's easier to just edit with default settings (maybe even objectively, log curves were designed to encode wider DR into fewer bits, which is accusation process, that just complicates editing.(or use it if you like BM CS so much .-.)), by "preserve", I assume you meant "recover", and yeah HL recovery is great, but it depends on the scene, and the one in DR is rather mediocre... Handling on the FP leaves a lot to be desired, and as for size, I'd be happy even with a QX1-ish type body, just add a tilting back LCD with touch for checking focus, zebras and peaking, add another ring on it for ISO control, RES FR and other settings can be in a simple menu, and if you're shooting raw, that's all you really need.
I think it is the end of the line for the FP, because I just ordered a new one bundled with the 45mm f2.8 lens for US$1,481.99. How could I not get his thing? Don't know if they will be upgrading the camera or if they are simply producing a new camera body or if they are dropping it al together. I notice, however, that the FP L is not being discounted.
Sigma FP2 needs the following (in order of importance): Mechanical shutter, PDAF/CDAF, clip on EVF not the nonsense they tried to sell ppl on, deal breaker on the next cam as those were the issues that made me sell my FP. And minor things include (would be nice): bigger battery, IBIS, grip option with battery upgrade (I should add the battery grip attachment could be the same size as the small grip. Could be just like attaching a power bank or something).
If I must make a choice to get started film-making now: Sigma FP vs Black Magic 4K vs Black Magic OG vs Panasonic Lumix GH 5 s vs Lumix GH 5 ll ?! what do you guys say? what shall one put ones money's worth on in 2023 getting started to make professional short films, and poetic documentaries? thanks and hope to hear from anyone that been around and tried and tested why certain cameras work better than other cameras! cheers from Sweden! 🍻
The image from the CDNG on the FP is spectacular and makes you overlook its quirks. Having FF gives you far more lens options, especially vintage ones such as Leica R, Contax Zeiss, Rokkor etc. I rig mine with a dummy battery to D-Tap, timecode, Tentacle Track-E and COS-11d. Results are beyond belief for cost to quality ratio.
I see, that sounds really inspiring! I been using micro 4/3 Lumix cameras.... but I been thinking of selling it all and find a new platform to work with as I want to work with cinema @@smallbrownfox594
WOW! for all that this camera may lack anyone shooting Video on a 5DmkIV ( and there are a surprising number of people who still do ) this camera with an EF to L adapter would be quite enough of an upgrade to make it considerable!
Now what do you think of this camera with the new EVF and firmware updates? Do you think it's a good bargain for $1599 USD for the Sigma FP with the 45mm lens from B&H Photo?
Thanks. Good summary. I have one and I love the images out of it. Either raw or mpeg. Having said that I just sent sigma an email literally seconds before I saw your video (funny that) asking sigma to introduce a compressed raw, so I echo your call. Also would like to find a easier way to listen to sound whilst recording. That’s a pain. However I find the internal mics are some of the best I have ever come across but outside the wind makes it very hit and miss. Inside or in calm conditions the internal mics are really surprising. Also agree on AF but I just go manual and forget about but it would be good to have better face detection. Overall I really like the camera and it’s versatility. Good on gibs too. Keep the pressure on Sigma, I believe they will respond either wise they are wasting their time, imo. Thanks.
Bloom can make anything look sumptuous and amazing. Philip - I have a dare for you. Shoot something completely silly, a hot dog commerical, Legos, whatever, and give it that Philip Bloom sheen.
Thanks and now to watch on my 4k hdr etc smart tv....and carry on saving for my one. Thanks too for the lower cost push, as our NZD exchange rate pushes it to about 3600 NZD retail body only. I could spend the difference on a lense...being able to colours you see in real life is fantastic for an amateur like myself..the full frame sensor really enables this imo Laurie
For a photographer I always thought the FP should go 'boutique' on this and give us a full-frame Pentax Q. Video specs that match Philip's requests, small EVF accessory, on body hot shoe for flash, and contacts for proprietary lenses with built-in leaf shutter. It's a pity flange distance does not provide too much hope of a lens adapter with aperture ring / leaf shutter built-in for any lens make, esp, Leica M. I'd pay £600 for the latter accessory to avoid red dot snobbery and the masking of such with black tape.
I use a slightly modified Krasnogorsk-3 shoulder mount I found on eBay, not as stylish as Philips but built like a tank, at some point I want to do another modification and gingerly drill in the bottom to add a 1/4 or 3/8 inch metal thread but you only get one shot at getting it right. If it fails I may see if a local carpenter could knock one up it seems a fairly straight forward design and that way I could choose the wood and finish.
I had that camera for a week to test it for photography. I love the imagequality but i wish it would be about 40 MP not 24. What i missed was a EVF, a tilt display and a bigger grip with a bigger battery. Although it do not eat batteries like my Merrills, it would be good to have a bigger one in a needed grip. I did not like the attachable Viefinder. It turns the camera into a telescope and does not help shooting at low positions or over head in a crowd… I do not care about the not perfect AF. I would not need it for my kind of photography. There is a rumored FP-L. I hope it has the wanted features plus an IBIS and a mechanical shutter to avoid banding at flourescend light.
I currently use a BMPCC 4k, which is great and I don't want to compromise on the 12bit RAW. But even the slow autofocus of Sigma FP is surely better than the 4k that doesn't have continuous autofocus at all. Add in the smaller size, larger sensor, and the amazing warm colours the fp seems to chuck out and I'm feeling pretty tempted to add the fp to my arsenal. Does anyone have any views. Many seem to think the 4k makes the fp redundant, but is there a merit to having both?
I’m eyeing this up too. I just want to know when the next update is and what’s to be expected. Apparently the fp L just got false colour in the last update so if fp gets that I just might be all in.
You see I made a video to answer the question, it’s even more complicated with the strange decision of releasing the L. The video still has merit to answer the question. It you think a “simple yes” is enough, it doesn’t. Tell me why.
This puppy is the Transformer of cameras. I've used it hand held in the street, as a B camera to an LF in a TVC and fully rigged out as a doco camera. I love this camera and the images it makes. Totally agree about the EVF and firmware update...also I'd love to see 4K 60....and some pancake Lmount lenses!
Reviewing the camera at 8 bit was criminal. And love the cats shots. Not sure why you you complaining about the file sizes in 12 bit Raw . It is what it is.. To me your missing the point of this camera . it's not the size. It's the image quality in 12 bit. Of course it needs to be rigged up for serious Cini-work.
how was I reviewing it at 8 bit? I covered everything. You cannot ignore the internal recording. I absolutely did not miss the point of the camera, I think I know cameras pretty well after all these years and everything has to be considered. Uncompressed Cinema DNG files whilst are high quality is a nightmare for data and time management.
Philip, I have to disagree with you on this one. I just bought the camera and I love it. It does have a future, in my hands. Amazing 4k/2k 12bit 444 RAW cDNG. Low light similar to Sony a7s3 (but better colour science at night). Colour science is beautiful similar to Fuji XT3. And price, wow, half of Sony a7s3. If you are an inspired cinematographer this is the camera for you. I was able to fit my Nikon and Sony A-mount lenses to my Sigma FP using a special adaptors (less $50 each): Imagine Sony Zeiss 135mm F1.8 A-mount lens on Sigma FP, gorgeously beautiful creamy bokeh beyond imagination. I was able to get cheap SSD (less than $100) to work with it. AND I was able get unlimited external power source to attached to it via a dummy battery (less than $40). It has a director's view for Arri and RED cameras. What more do you want for a pocket-sized cinema camera with less than $2k price tag? If this is not the camera, then I don't think there will be a cinema camera at this price point in any foreseeable future, Philip.
I don’t get your reply. I was very positive about a lot of the camera but pointed out that I am 100% certain they will fix in a mk ii. You talk about it being a pocket camera but you are adding all that stuff onto it! Is it really a “pocket camera” and does being a “pocket camera” really matter. You clearly aren’t using it out the box where it is small. So that point makes no sense. It needs an EVF. It needs a tilting screen. Great it records to huge cdng. Quality is great. File sizes are horrendous. So you don’t agree with me that the internal recording isn’t good enough? How is that even possible to disagree with? It’s not. Great you have wonderful manual focus with 3rd party lenses. How is that any different to other mirrorless cameras? £2000 isn’t that cheap. If you look at the new Blackmagic pocket cinema 6K pro that is a superior camera for £500 more. The sigma sits in an awkward spot. It’s small but you can’t really use it like that so you need to build it up but being a small base makes it harder. Anyway I said it all in the video. Don’t be defensive about the camera. It’s my opinion and this is based on everything that’s out there. This is a first generation model and it shows what needs to be done. sigma’s CEO messaged me to thank me for the detailed feedback as it was very useful for them. You can work round some of it limitations but wouldn’t it be better if you didn’t have to?
@@philipbloom Philip, thanks for your opinion but you need to respect mine as well. Remember, this is a full frame pocket cinema. Firmware is now at 2.03. Sigma and fujifilm are known to continue to improve their same camera overtime. That is very responsible and honorable thing. This is what customers' need. That is being respectable and loyal to their customer; the ancient Japanese's way. I don't see that in Sony and I own several of them (a7r3, a6100 and fs700r). Sony has lost their Japanese traditional values; they have not earn my respect (except for their fs700r which they did honour and follow through). When Japanese CEO emailed you, it is out of respect. It is something honourable men do even when they disagree with you. This characteristic so rare now a day. Sorry, for side tracking... For less than $2000 usd, Sigma FP is an amazing full-frame camera. Yes, evf would be nice, but Sony FX3 didn't have it. The weird thing is the camera that you are not happy with, I seem to love it: Sony fs700r and Sigma FP. I guess we think differently and use the camera differently. I really appreciate your honest feedback but we have different view point and needs. Keep up with your channel, with great respect, Sip.
@@educatetube I said you can have your opinion. This is my video hence my explanation as to my issues which are generally accepted as problems. If it works for you then great.
@ around 6:30 u are referring to the EVF and and stability. I'm no pro, but I have my way of using the screen with stable "hand holding" . Think old Hasselblad top look down, Put elbows close/into body and you suddenly are locked with upper body. Hand on grip (master hand), other hand under camera soft tension against body. The new way to use the new cameras with Screen as EVF. Any one else has a way to "lock in camera"?
I would really appreciate a video by a top class, like Phillip Bloom, to shot some kind of an ultimate video on best cameras that are not dealing well with autofocus. What are benefits of using these. And a gear for those. There are tons of people that don't know a thing about manual focusing, manual focus lens, advantages in price and control of frame that comes with manual focus. Because all they do, is watching vloggers talking about cameras. And a vlogger starts any camera review with autofocus...and then throws out a 7000$ g-master autofocus lens, and is still incapable of using it the way it should be used. The point of the video for all the boys and girls that like filming anything to be: -teach us basics of manual (many people don't now does manual focus works based on left/right position, or based on distance); -encourage people to at least try using manual; -explanation, that people don't need a full frame if they don't have a money for one; -a person with non full frame camera is not retarded or defected in any way. A bunch of motion pictures are recorded with super 35mm, that vloggers are calling "croped lens", and people that are doing this for a long time, like Mr.Bloom, are calling it super 35 or APS-c. That is the difference between a master and a vlogger yelling WHAT'S UUUUP at the start of every video. Unfortunately, many talented people with cameras, think that Philip Bloom is same what Peter McAnything is. -what are we getting in price and image quality by taking lenses without manual focus and what are a good options to combine with cameras such as Blackmagic4k/6k, Fuji x-t3/4, Panasonic GH5; - few words on cameras that are dealing with poor autofocus, and what they are giving us as a compensation; ... Don't want this channel to become a start up guide for someone that will use camera for a week and throw it away when it gets bored. But, I just think that words that come out out of someone that has been on SKY and dedicated a life to this craft, and went to every corner of the planet with a camera, would have a greater impact on talented people.
Sadly the SigmaFP will never have compressed CinemaDNG for the same reasons the newer Blackmagic cameras can't. RED has a patent that prevents all compressed mosaic forms of RAW above 2k and at speeds above 20FPS, and it isn't specific to a Bayer mosaic either. Thus, without pay expensive patent fees, the only in camera solution would require something along the lines of BlackmagicRAW, and the camer in this form was not designed for it. For that reason I'm hoping that Sigma makes a FP II that has log, can output BlackmagicRAW to an SSD, and has a tiny viewfinder add on.
The Sigma LVF comes with a new baseplate, identical to the body, the thing you attach the LVF to with the two Allen screws. It's a one time thing. The baseplate with LVF attaches to the FP body with a single large tripod style screw. When you want to remove the LVF you just unscrew the one large screw. same when you want to reattach it. I put the Allen key away and have never needed to use it more than once.
Chris Whitten so am on a tripod. Low shot. How? Oh wait. Tripod base plate too. Dammit! Am handheld, I am 6 foot 2...I need to film or photograph a kid, my cats....if you don’t get why it needs to flip up or pull off like every other camera loupe ever used on a camera then I have no idea what you shoot.
@@philipbloom Ugh, honestly is there any need to be gruff and rude. Jeez !!!! The first thing I posted was a 'very fair review' comment. I was simply trying to help with my LVF comment. Yes, I use a tripod too. Just trying to help! No idea why posting a simple attempt to help elicited asuch a rude and blunt reply. maybe stop posting RUclips videos!!!!!
@@philipbloom yeah, seems like pretty much everything is worse in video mode. hight pixel is the enemy. Fp is the one to get. Too bad Sigma doeas not have native pancake lens. That would be amazing for pocket size shooting.
I do like this camera. If Blackmagic does not come out with a new small form factor camera in the next year, I may end up getting this onre to replace a camera that I'll be retiring.
Good point! Of course, that's not the only thing that can go wrong during a time-lapse-my GH4 rear LCD completely died while recording a time-lapse when the sun came into the frame. Very strange in that nothing else was affected, just the LCD, the EVF kept working fine as did the sensor.
@@shlawchablaas That's real weird indeed, otherwise hot mirrors on everything should be a good idea, I guess, also kinda reminds me of some early DJI FC's which has a small slit in the housing, and one of the sensors in there was sensitive to sunlight and that error would send countless drones falling out of the sky.
Hi Mr. Bloom. I am a new fan. I’ve watched your canon one DC video a couple times. I’ve also watched your C300 video a couple of times as well. And I’ve watched all your 5D Mark two videos. Sidenote: where can I see all of your 5D Mark two videos? Have you posted them all on RUclips? Now onto the sigma FP. I’ve never shot in Raw before. How manageable are the file sizes if I shot in either 12 bit or 10 bit raw in 1080 P? I’m not really interested in 4K. I got a slightly better than average PC. Will this make the file sizes much more manageable? I’m currently looking at either the 5D Mark IV, the ESR, or the US RP for a full frame 1080. I’m looking to spend under $1500. I’ve also looked at a used Panasonic S1 or a new Panasonic S5. Do you think the Sigma FP could be the ticket? Thank you for all the work you do. You have a unique style. You’re definitely not one of these copycat RUclipsrs where it’s just videos , filled with slow Mo, the same music, and coffee making.
I hope the next Sigma fp will be a tiny bit bigger to fit a proper HDMI and maybe CFast or even CFExpress card. Maybe even XLR input and audio output Also, I think current Sigma fp doesn't actually downsample from 6k to 4k, but instead uses pixel binning
Its what you would call a Tiny little beast - It is an unusually amazing piece of equipment - with the changes you mention it would truly be a force in the market - thanks for sharing :)
This camera is available in india for around 1000€ right now. Makes it the best bang for buck for anyone looking to get a b cam for any kind of RAW work. Negates all the issues it supposedly has compared to other mirrorless systems. Looks beautiful too!
The main problem with the sigma FP is that every one that reviewed it, reviewed it when it first came out, when it still sucked. It’s a whole new camera today with all the firmware updates. With the EVF-11, and a low profile SSD, it makes it easy to shoot in the bright Sun. The new Sigma 20mm f2 makes for a nice compact package, and with a cheap adapter, I can use all my Canon lenses. No continuous auto focus, but it’s a Cinema camera, just half press the shutter button and it will refocus, even while recording. Just edit out the focus breathing.
This review was after 1 year of use. How many years do you expect reviewers to wait before reviewing it? The EVF IS essential, but the design is odd as it stops you from being able to use the HDMI. The rolling shutter still sucks, and you excuse the lack of continuous AF because it's a "cinema camera", whatever that exactly is? Last time I check, A LOT of "cinema cameras" have continuous AF. After almost 4 years, this camera is still a disappointment. It has positives and I cover them in this review.
@@philipbloom i wasn’t giving you shit sir, I was just saying that the camera is a lot better now than when you reviewed it a couple of years ago. Your review was spot on when you made it, but I think they are up to firmware 4, and the camera is a lot better now. I would do a review of it myself, but I have a face made for radio.
@@Panotaker how has it been for you, using the FP? I'm about to get one. The look and color science of the image being most important to me. It's available for $1200 now for my budget, I feel this camera is easily the best.
@@watzmaaname I love mine, the colors are fantastic. Keep in mind, the FP, like the BMPCC4K, and others cheaper cinema cameras don’t have continuous auto focus. But you are mainly paying for the fantastic colors. I have the EVF-11 on mine, which lets me focus outside without needing an external monitor. If you need continuous auto focus, get a Sony, but you are going to need more money. 1200 bucks is a bargain for an FP!
That little Zacuto finder looks way more reasonably sized. Zacuto did make a finder for the fp, but everywhere I've seen it's marked as discontinued, not sure what that's about?
@@philipbloom Ah I see, I misunderstood, I thought the one in the video was the generic DSLR finder from them, not the sigma fp specific one(I didn't think anyone managed to get the Z Finder for the fp before it got discontinued).
Yes that 45mm lens on the camera that you see is soooooo big. Oh and their new 85mm F1.4? Mate is tiny compared to traditional ones. Oh yeah and what about adapted glass? Ever seen Leica m lenses? You can’t tell me those are big!?
@@philipbloom What if you need multiple focal lengths? If the whole point is to save space and weight, then you might not want to carry around multiple prime lenses. What's the smallest L-mount zoom available?
@@tailehuynhphat9570 You need to understand what digital zoom and crop means. Cropping a FF sensor 2x essentially gives the same FOV on a m43 with the same lens. Optical zoom uses the whole sensor size while changing FOV. If you compare FF sensor in its un-cropped wide angle state with a m43 lens, you get 4x more sensor area to play with.
I just want the next version to support faster and dual storage, better than slapping on an SSD tbh. A flippy screen and good AF would finally shut up all the vlogger types so that'd be nice too but not a must for me. I would like it if they add a gyroscope sensor so you can do active stabilization in post like with the FX9, ZV-1 and A7SIII. It achieves much better results if you're willing to sacrifice enough of your FoV. The minixlr on the Canon C70 got me thinking that they could maybe at 4.4mm pentacon instead of 3.5mm on smaller cameras, since it not only adapts to XLR easil, but it carries 2 channels as well. I was thinking more that Sony should do that, since 4.4mm pentacon is their standard and invention. Not really used for mics usually, but seems like an awesome idea especially if they add some encoders for levels as well. For photographers all it really needs is a way to sync the shutter to the electrical frequency, so that it only shows only integers or halves of 1/50 or 1/60 depending on your setting. Don't know why not every camera with an eshutter has this feature. No adaptable EVF is a mistake though... For video, I do prefer looking at the screen over a viewfinder myself since you can always better in some other way like mentioned.
For anyone reading this in 2023, the FP is a much more usable camera than it was in 3 years ago. Exposing for RAW is no longer difficult with the upgraded firmware v5.0 to show false colors and a bonus EL zone feature. Most limitations with this camera has a simple solution now. But the one thing you can do is always strip it down to the size of a rangefinder. This is definitely a "cult following" type camera and the price is extremely fair to get a premium experience.
Phenomenal review and inputs about this imperfect yet little wonder SIGMA FP! Did you use the MC-21 adapter for that 70-200mm Canon EF glass? I'm a owner of too many EF glass, willing to buy the Sigma FP but keep asking myself if the MC-21 does enable total functionality for my EF canon's? Much appreciated if you could help me out with this doubt. Thank you and please keep it up 👍
Thank you Joao. Yes you can use it but there’s of course no AF so manual focus only and that’s a fiddly lens for MF especially on the long end. Fully functional though!
@@philipbloom That was really helpful! On one side MF it is then, but on the other aperture and stabilization is a go :) ! Sounds good to me! I don't mind the extra stretch in M.Focusing myself! Thank you so much Philip and, please, keep posting (when possible, of course), your work! Love it as your channel, so much! Its one of a kind! All the best from Madeira Island, Portugal!
Not quite the smallest full frame mirrorless. I just bought the Sony RX1 & converted to full spectrum (which might interest you). It have very good IR perforance btw. The RX1 is smaller and lighter than the Sigma with its smallest lens, which is also a stop slower and nowhere near as sharp. Of course the RX1 video is pretty lame by comparison. The RX1R II has a built-in viewfinder but don't be tempted to convert that to IR.
@@philipbloom hehe, I know but you didn't specify 😛. On a serious note - As far as infrared stills are concerned I'm going to be testing it in Switzerland next week (fingers crossed) so will put it through its paces some more. The leaf shutter is nice being used to the noisy A7r. I've written a bit about it here if you're curious.: www.edwardnoble.com/rx1fs
The best FF image quality under 2000$, the best RAW lightweight crash cam and the best director viewfinder on the market is a no brainier just buy one. You can't use on professionals set it because the ergonomics is a nightmare but the image quality is unbeatable even for much much more expensive cameras. SSD space is a false problem in 2020 SSD are damn cheap if you can't afford it maybe is because you propose the wrong qually standard to your client. In post just use slimRAW to save alot of space.
@@philipbloom I've never seen those used on an animal before. I thought they were for electronics, keys, etc. I thought it was funny but also brilliant
Suck that they did away with the Foveon. I always liked the images coming from that sensor. Those cameras weren't sadly popular either despite being close to perfect.
Sigma FP.. or, you could get a Panasonic S1H.. I know, it doesn't have the cool RAW feature super curious to see your thoughts on the upcoming Canon C70, which looks like Canon's take on the S1H? (no EVF! bad IBIS! but that AF and 120fps)
This camera is capable of producing wonderful images. So small and yet so capable. Lots to like.
While you're frustrated with Sony and software updates, the Sigma FP is on firmware version 4.0. How many of your original issues are still around?

This really is the true successor to the 1080 BMPCC.
I used that camera for years, so picking this up was like meeting an old friend who had matured and gone up in the world.
It's actually FUN to use too. The size and weight are such a big deal!
Incredible bit of kit
Do you shoot raw on it? What's your workflow like?
@@marianoguy Yes, it's just cinema DNG RAW which is fairly straightforward. Most of my work at the moment involves colour grading and sending off the files for someone else to edit, so I usually do the colour work in Premiere, then export to DNxHD.
Despite all its claims to fake though it doesn’t have dynamic range!! After sound quality, a high dynamic range is the most important attribute for determining image quality. The specs don’t matter if, after RUclips compresses the shut out of it, it could still look like it was shot on a smart phone
@@isaacroberts9089 Are you kidding me? The DR for this thing is off the scale and low-light performance is insane
This camera has so underrated color science I get blown away every time I use it in a production.
Their Foveon cameras are incredible as well. Some of the best image quality and color rendition I've ever seen.
Corey S. Vaughn I'm not sure why Fuji uses X-Trans... looks very strange when scaled to 100%. But Foveon looks amazing blown up! But not without constraints according to the fp team

This is the kind of review you would pay to see in theaters! Great job, as always.
I love the camera, but I'm still fighting in my mind between Sigma FP, Sony A7c or Fujifilm XT4 ... The more I see ... The more confused I get! ...
I have A7c. Love the color science but want this sigma
Thanks, The most well rounded RAW recording function demonstration and presentation on the Sigma FP amount all the videos I had seen on RUclips.
I'm an FP user too, I like putting Leica R lens on it for architectural video works.
Sigma has an announcement in a couple of days, they will be releasing "new products" fingers crossed it wont just be lenses.
wonder if Sigma is allowed to purchase same 12mp sensor as in A7s3 from Sony?
This is an amazing tool in the right hands. Everything you could possibly need. Codec + compact. Don't let the name fool you, Sigma created a masterpiece.
Yeah, all these people are comparing it to vlogging cameras not cinema cameras. Pretty weird really.
Do you not have issues with the rolling shutter for stills!?
@@philipbloom Been wondering this as well, most samples I've seen look good, but some people have said it's an issue with blowing grass, fluorescent lights, etc.

Beautiful music in the background
Sony doesn’t have anywhere near the same level of support - otherwise I would’ve gone for a zv-e1 but that thing is purposely crippled to overheat and you know there’s not going to be any updates because the a7s 3 didn’t get any
Thank you for pointing out the baked in sharpness in the “off” mov mode. That is a an absolute stomach clencher that the iPhone 14 is also doing the same thing 🤮. There I was excited to finally match my zeiss biogon lens and there they bake in all that sharpness so that it will be absolutely pointless or should I say sooty? 😅. WTF Edit: firmware 3.0 fixes this.
not to mention upscaling to 4k from 1080 is nbd these days, truly a sleeper cam
These clickbait titles, does it have a future? Lmao
I feel rather cheated! Was expecting a 2 hour monster review! In all seriousness, a great review of what could be a great camera, It seems like such a frustrating camera as it is so close to being great. Wonderful music that reflected the sorrow that this isn't a better camera!

Took 13 minutes to get to the cat footage I was waiting for. Worth the wait!
what lens are you using for that Lush Beard of yours? i need the deets!
I love the colours... but it looks like a great RAW camera with quite nice internal proxies! - useful review though, thank you.
You had to wait until now didn’t you Mr. Bloom. I FINALLY pulled the trigger on the FP, and three days later your video falls into my suggested feed like 😭
In all seriousness, great content as always.
So close and so much potential... I hope they make an FP mark II.
my god your work is such a relief when one hears the variety and the relevance of music you use.
Seems like such a great value and now there is an evf
Another excellent review. Thank you for the amount of work you put into these. It is greatly appreciated and does not go unnoticed. I always find myself immersed in every one of your videos and that is what truly differentiates you from every other "RUclipsr." I use the term youtuber loosely as you are much much more than that. I've been hoping they'd come up with a Sigma FP mark II with a screen that either articulates or flips. I know they can keep it small. But it'd get in the way of using a cage. So I dunno. They fixed so much with it over time though, like you didn't even get playback on Cinema DNG at first.
Elegant and eloquent work as always
those innocents feeding the ducks and your music. beautiful.
Very nice review and beautiful footage from the FP! I was so close to buying this camera last year but the lack of IBIS and EVF as you stated were too big for me to give up. Such a pleasing image though!
That shoulder mount is so beautiful! Is there a way for us to see photos of it? I’d like to make a costume made one
my needs for sigma FP in future firmware update or 2nd generation : ① 3:1 or 5:1 dng raw to SSD or whatever ② 4K 60 fps raw(at least 10 bit please ), even in Crop mode S35 is nice ③ allow raw video with electronic stabilization ④ More control on focus peaking ( current tiny screen without big output monitor can not show the peaking accurately). by saying that , Sigma FP it''s still my most favorite run and gun gear to take out and shoot.
Music is super amazing!

As if David Attenborough spoke about cameras. It's a great pleasure to watch your reviews, mr. Bloom! Thank you for the effort you put in!
Thanks.
This is the video that made me consider subscribing. Really great images from this camera.
Haha that Ninja V rant made me laugh 😂

Philip - I have a dare for you. Shoot something completely silly, a hot dog commerical, Legos, whatever, and give it that Philip Bloom sheen.
Thanks and now to watch on my 4k hdr etc smart tv....and carry on saving for my one. Thanks too for the lower cost push, as our NZD exchange rate pushes it to about 3600 NZD retail body only. I could spend the difference on a lense...being able to colours you see in real life is fantastic for an amateur like myself..the full frame sensor really enables this imo Laurie
17:00 Now you can put a DJI Lidar focus system.
I remember seeing your wooden rig at the launch event and wondering if it was an adapted rifle stock 😅
I use a slightly modified
Krasnogorsk-3 shoulder mount I found on eBay, not as stylish as Philips but built like a tank, at some point I want to do another modification and gingerly drill in the bottom to add a 1/4 or 3/8 inch metal thread but you only get one shot at getting it right.
Buy it - you won't regret it!
The answer to your title is a simple YES, it does.
@@philipbloom Thanks, and looking forward to your Sony FX3 review.
1st time commenter; great review. Any plans on reviewing the FP-L?
@ around 6:30 u are referring to the EVF and and stability. I'm no pro, but I have my way of using the screen with stable "hand holding" .
Think old Hasselblad top look down, Put elbows close/into body and you suddenly are locked with upper body. Hand on grip (master hand), other hand under camera soft tension against body.
The new way to use the new cameras with Screen as EVF. Any one else has a way to "lock in camera"?
But it’s below you if you are shooting like a Hasselblad. The screen needs to be in front of you. Anyway I can’t focus that close.
Having a Tile on the cat is pretty clever I must say!
The point of the video for all the boys and girls that like filming anything to be:
-teach us basics of manual (many people don't now does manual focus works based on left/right position, or based on distance);
-encourage people to at least try using manual;
-explanation, that people don't need a full frame if they don't have a money for one;
-a person with non full frame camera is not retarded or defected in any way.
-what are we getting in price and image quality by taking lenses without manual focus and what are a good options to combine with cameras such as Blackmagic4k/6k, Fuji x-t3/4, Panasonic GH5;
- few words on cameras that are dealing with poor autofocus, and what they are giving us as a compensation;
...
Don't want this channel to become a start up guide for someone that will use camera for a week and throw it away when it gets bored. But, I just think that words that come out out of someone that has been on SKY and dedicated a life to this craft, and went to every corner of the planet with a camera, would have a greater impact on talented people.
I think you should check out my cinematic Masterclass :)
@@philipbloom Is your course by chance available on SkillShare, or solely via MZed?
These videos got me learning and getting sleepy at the same time😂 love it and awesome view on the camera 👍🐠
Loved the little ninja v rant
Bill Young the patent issues are mentioned in the video.
@@philipbloom My apologies I must have missed that.
Slim Raw is a great way to compress CDNG frames before using. Its a perfect tool for the FP
@@philipbloom I did agree I didn't like the LVF either and that is one of the major negatives of the FP. Maybe take a chill pill.
I woke up today and realized i want this camera. Is there a new version coming in near future?
There was last year, much worse for video.
@@philipbloom yeah, seems like pretty much everything is worse in video mode. hight pixel is the enemy. Fp is the one to get. Too bad Sigma doeas not have native pancake lens. That would be amazing for pocket size shooting.
@@zigmej The Sigma 45mm F2.8 is quite close to pancake size. And awesome build quality.
@@zigmej look at the Voigtländers, for example 35mm 2.5 skopar with an Adapter.
I do like this camera. If Blackmagic does not come out with a new small form factor camera in the next year, I may end up getting this onre to replace a camera that I'll be retiring.
I watched it twice - on a tablet and then on a 27" monitor in 1440.
Not ideal stills camera, but that shutter ain't ever breaking :> Great timelapse camera I guess.
Finally a review of the fp!
I hope the next Sigma fp will be a tiny bit bigger to fit a proper HDMI and maybe CFast or even CFExpress card. Maybe even XLR input and audio output
Also, I think current Sigma fp doesn't actually downsample from 6k to 4k, but instead uses pixel binning
I don’t think so. For the HFR yes
Where can I buy in India for that price?
@@nothinginthename8231 I don't think it's available that easily in India. Try detec or gears of future.
Maybe do the tiniest fact-check before writing that first line!
For the reason I explained in the video. The frame doesn't stay on due to a coating on the glass.
@@philipbloom Ah I see, I misunderstood, I thought the one in the video was the generic DSLR finder from them, not the sigma fp specific one(I didn't think anyone managed to get the Z Finder for the fp before it got discontinued).
Doesn't having to carry around big full frame lenses defeat the purpose of a compact camera?
Yes that 45mm lens on the camera that you see is soooooo big. Oh and their new 85mm F1.4? Mate is tiny compared to traditional ones. Oh yeah and what about adapted glass? Ever seen Leica m lenses? You can’t tell me those are big!?
@@philipbloom What if you need multiple focal lengths? If the whole point is to save space and weight, then you might not want to carry around multiple prime lenses. What's the smallest L-mount zoom available?
@@PossumReviews But it's FF so you can always crop/digital zoom. Carry a 45mm and get 72mm equiv in apsc, and 90mm in m43
@@cucumberworks but you dont get the same angle of view that you desire if you crop
The sensor readout simply isn’t fast enough for just an electronic shutter for stills. Skewing is too common.
Doesn’t count am afraid. Fixed lens.
