It's still a cool boat. Sure he can put a propeller ND go faster but that boat can do 180s in the water ND go in real shallow water that props can't get into ND the jet pump is more safe around swimmers. Speed isn't everything this thing can also turn on a dime. Check out sprinter boats they pretty bad ass. Jets are way more fun then props. Maybe u should build a better boat

In 1978 I had a 21 foot jet boat! It only had a 460 Ford with a cam and 650 double pumper and Excel dual point distributor. That boat scared the crap out of me all the time! It was a blast to drive! I feel my top speed was about 60 but even 60 feels like 100! the best I did pulling water skiers was 8 at one time. It had the old Berkley pump!
A jet boat most definitely DOES NOT pull itself forward! In fact, the defector off the back of the drive proves that... when the defector is down to spool the turbos, all the force of the jet is pushed equally out both sides and the boat sits still... if the intake of the drive was "pulling the boat" it would launch forward when he tries to spool the turbos. Also, the drive sucks water UP into the drive, so the boat would actually get pulled down into the water, not forward!
In the early 80's I had a flatty v-drive with an alcohol LS7. We were camping on a river and making some passes when a group.of older gents came to the dock to watch. They'd been tipping a few back already and they started chidding one of the guys about "guts" enough to go for a ride. So I gave him a short run hitting maybe 85-90 mph or so. His eyes were huge by the time we got back. When he stepped in the seat to get out all his buddies busted out laughing. Seems he had sprung a leak while we were out. That seat cushion was never the same. We used to say you weren't a man till you went 100 on a flat bottom. That was before runner bottoms or wings. If you did it right she would dance, if not she'd bite you hard.

Mike is a hell of a good host he really takes good care of his guest and goes the extra mile you don't see many people like that anymore!
He's just a hell of a man, he treats everyone he comes across with total respect and has time for everyone. Two totally down to earth dudes having a laugh in a beast of a boat, what's not to like.

Sonny Leonard was a great man and engine builder. I enjoyed working for him. I wish he got to ride in the boat before he passed.

Jet drives move the boat by differential pressure. Low in front where the water is coming from. High in back where it’s getting squeezed and sped up.

OK - I'm no rocket scientist, but the description of how a jet boat works is not correct. Jet boats (like, well, jet aircraft and rockets) work on the principle of reaction - Newton's third law of motion. The pump forces mass (water, in this case) toward the rear of the boat at a high speed - the boat moves forward in reaction to that mass being sent the opposite direction at high speed. Here's a thought experiment for those who think that the boat is "pulling" through the water: imagine that the pump inlet is fed by a big water tank mounted ON THE BOAT. If the primary propulsion was from "pull", then the boat would never move. However, I guarantee that, in fact, the boat will be propelled forward very rapidly. A normal non-jet boat "screws" itself through the water by coupling engine power via the propeller blades, but a jet-boat relies on the reaction of the water expelled, just like a rocket relies on the thrust developed by expelling hot gases from the rocket nozzle.
I think that boat is kickass and Tom and Finnegan do too. Always go fast
Whats also nice about a jet boat is, if you have a good battery you can just crank it back to shore. Same difference with a manual without the neutral safety switch.

@5:39 the 'KEY' word was SHOULD,,, however, we know pro pilots who drive those incredible T/F boats do EVERYTHING RIGHT and even they sometimes are launched out of their boats at the speeds Mike mentions. Only a few did not survive the impact on water that is like concrete but we can bet even the survivors felt the effects for many, many months afterward.
I know some about jet boats and Finn,s description is spot on. No push ALL pull. Right now.
That, along with Mikes explanation of pull, not push doesn't match up with his explanation of the jet tip for staging. If it is all pull, then why does the boat not move when the water pushes to the sides, even though it is still pulling?
He is is actually incorrect...for every action there is an equal and opposite reaction...the jet nozzle produces thrust which drives the boat in what ever direction it is pointing...otherwise how would you ever steer...the propulsion has ZERO to do with the suction...Ive saw him say this on his vids too and I was cringing because he was leading people the wrong way...

Finnegan could at least put some decent seats in that thing, both of you guys made those seats look tiny like they were made for kids, those are "pleasure boat" seats. I know you don't want seat belts, but he could have a nice racing type seat that would hold you better, it's easier than you think to get tossed out of a boat. My Dad spun out his 16ft hydroplane with prop/rudder, when a roll pin sheared on the steering mechanism on the rudder. it broke as he was doing a hard turn under power, spun the boat out, did a complete 360 and almost got thrown out.
We learned a lesson that day, cause we didn't have another boat there on the lake to go out and drag him in, my Dad had to lay on the bow of the boat and paddle with his hands, took him quite a while to get the boat close enough to shore to throw him a rope, the lesson we learned is, you should never play with a boat without having another boat there in case of emergency.
So at the beginning he said it's the suction that drives the boat forward then at 11:35 he says that nozzle acts like neutral and you can spool it up. If that's the case it's the thrust out the back that's driving the boat forward which I would expect it's both.
By the look of it, you could have made it back to shore on the starter alone. That boat is a monster.

A few years ago I was in my buddy’s boat and we began to sink. After we recovered it I spent months trying to figure out how we could have saved the boat. I came up with and idea of inflatable bags Attached to the haul and stern of the boat and an air tank that can hold enough air to fill the bags quickly and enough to keep the boat afloat. Even if it’s only for a few more minutes. Because a few more minutes we would have made it back to the boat launch. Kinda of like fire suppression system but for a sinking boat lol.
It is kind of like a life raft for a bigger boat. CO2 is stored at high pressure......I'm not sure if it has any advantage over a high pressure air tank like a diving tank. Good idea.
At 3:36 Finn says boat is being pulled through water by the GIANT pump, not pushed by forward by water jet coming out the back. The jet stream could be pointed up he says and the boat would still go forward REALLY?? If that is correct what Finn says at 12:35 about the water being diverted out the side of the pump mechanism at idle or redirected toward the front on some drives to go backward WOULD NOT WORK. Which is correct?? Incredible creation for sure. Personally, I always avoided any activity that required protective underwear. Did Finn have his on for the runs?
I think that the explanation is incorrect. It is working like a jet where the change in momentum of the medium (water here) creates an "equal and opposite force" to push the boat forwards. So no, the sucking isn't doing it, the ejection at the rear is. Otherwise the diverter nozzles wouldn't change anything.

I'm probably telling you something you already know,
when you take off real fast like that, and if for any reason your motor quits ,a giant wave from your wake will swamp your boat and it will be game under. Real fast. I've seen a couple of boats do that at the Colorado River. I would get that bow strengthened up not just for people to walk on it, but vibrations like that can harmonize with your motor and grow exponentially when you accelerate and could possibly fly apart

I've had a Raysoncraft jet for 30+ years. Always run some water through the clean-out hole when running on dry land to lube the wear ring.
Love MF...but, I have to clarify something because the info we got from Mike about how a jet drive propels a boat is incorrect...a jet drive moves the boat with thrust...For every action there is an equal and opposite reaction...The blast of water coming out of the jet(nozzle) is 100% responsible for the movement of the boat...that is why when you turn the nozzle left or right the boat responds accordingly...the water exiting the nozzle doesn't need to push against the water to propel the boat (as a traditional propeller works)...If you have ever squeezed the trigger on a garden hose nozzle set to full blast, you have felt the reaction(thrust)...A wand at a do it yourself car wash is a perfect example...almost hurts your arm holding back that thrust...if someone has a jet boat and wanted to prove that the water intake isn't what is moving the boat, you could get a big drum full of water and somehow feed it to the intake of the drive, then block off the intake grate on the bottom of the boat...The water wouldn't last long but you would get the exact same thrust (forward movement) as you would otherwise...the intake grate does however help stabilize the boat at higher speeds because of the suction created therefor holding the stern to the water...a traditional propeller also does this but in a different way...awesome video...sorry Mike, I wanted to clarify this so others would understand how it works...

I would have liked to see a more detailed explanation of jet drive physics (though it is pretty complicated; skip to point #3 for the biggest contributor). I like to break down the jet drive physics as follows:
1. Positive hydro-static drive component: Behind a rotating propeller there is a pressure gradient developed by a combination of water viscosity and change in water momentum. A high pressure contacts the back of the propeller and using the equation F=PxA (Force = Pressure x Area perpendicular to direction of travel) you can see how this would push a boat forwards. In a jet drive there are pressures acting on the jet drive housing that complicates things and act in other directions. It is the sum of all PxA (with some negative) that provides this thrust component. You can also imagine taking a knife and virtually slicing the water at the jet drive's exit and temporarily imagine the jet drive, including all of the water inside it, as a solid block. At that exit there will be a specific average pressure and if you multiply this pressure by the jet's exit area you'll calculate the same total thrust component.
2. Negative hydro-static drive component: In front of a rotating propeller there is a similar pressure gradient, although in this case it is a reduced pressure. You can imagine this reduced pressure as pulling the boat forwards, but more accurately there is approximately 15 psi of water pressure pushing on the boat everywhere, including at the back. By lowering the pressure at the front of the propeller up to 15 psi the boat will be "pushed" forwards by the water at the back of the boat. If the pressure drop is greater than approximately 15 psi you will get cavitation, which is essentially the water flashing into a gas. Propellers designed to push water don't do a good job pushing gasses and a this causes the engine's rpm to flair up and acceleration to drop off. This negative hydro-static component is limited by this 15 psi pressure drop limit and the fact that when moving quickly, the water, and its up to ~15 psi max, doesn't touch the back of the boat any more. As a result, at speed, you don't really accelerate from this. Finnegan is correct though that if you took the jet drive's output and pointed it directly upwards, you would still be pulled forwards by the water being sucked into the jet drive intake (although the boat would be slow).
3. Change in momentum applied to the water exiting the jet drive: With high powered jet drives this is the primary motivating force. If you stand on a skateboard and throw a basketball rearwards, the skateboard and you will move forwards. This is because you give the ball momentum and as a result you receive an equal amount of momentum, but in the opposite direction. This same mechanism applies to all of the water thrust out the back of the jet drive. This is also the same way rockets in space can still accelerate when there is no air for the rocket to push against. By accelerating something and throwing it out the rear of a rocket, a boat, a snowmobile, etc. the vehicle is accelerated forwards. The equation for conservation of momentum with two bodies is M1xV1=M2xV2, although the equation relating momentum to force and time (F = MxV/t) is more useful here. Since V/t equals acceleration, this simplifies to F=MA (Force = Mass x Acceleration). Ultimately the faster and more water you thrust rearwards, the larger the force generated pushing the boat forwards.
One cool thing about the momentum thrust component is it doesn't matter if the jet is shooting in the water or in the air. As long as the water jet shoots rearwards, the thrust produced is forwards. If the jet shoots upwards though, the force on the boat is downwards (which could push the back of the boat under water) and if sideways, the force is also sideways (in the opposite direction).
One thing that does impact the momentum thrust component a lot is if the propeller cavitates. Since the propeller is designed for water, it can't pump a gas very well. When cavitation occurs, the water exiting the jet drive will drastically slow down and the engine will suddenly rev up drastically. This is why having a large, unrestricted water intake is so important. Another thing to consider is when cruising at speed with a well designed water intake, water is actually pushed into the intake and this helps to make cavitation less likely. If you apply enough power to the jet drive though, at some power level, cavitation will occur at any speed. This is why you'll sometimes see very high powered jet drives appear to "slip", with the engine revving right to redline, and the boat not accelerating very well.
Off topic, but something I found fascinating many years ago is how modern, high powered snowmobiles manage to accelerate up near vertical slopes that are far, far too steep to even walk up. When I started snowmobiling, even the highest powered machines relied on traction, which essentially means developing the maximum "pressure" on the rearward face of the snowmobile track's paddle and pushing against this. Once power got into the 150 hp level and up (these days 400+ hp isn't unheard of with turbocharged mountain sleds) the motive force switched from the highest pressure on the paddles (traction) to instead accelerating snow to insane speeds and thrusting the snow out the back of the snowmobile more like a jet. By imparting enough momentum into the snow being shot out the back, the forward thrust created can be enough to accelerate the snowmobile up literally any slope, even up a vertical slope! This same mechanism is used with high powered sandrails where sand is thrust rearwards at extreme speeds, resulting in incredible levels of forward acceleration. In fact if you have enough horsepower and can "shoot" enough snow or sand rearwards at a high enough speed, acceleration is effectively unlimited. Already you can actually accelerate this way faster than possible with drag slicks on pavement. With enough horsepower and the ability to use it to shoot snow, sand or water rearwards fast enough, acceleration will be limited only by what the human body can handle.
I hope this overly detailed explanation helps some of you...

I got a aluminum jet boat that has a LS 6 liter and that thing hauls across the water everyone has been telling me I gotta put a turbo on it but they are the same ones that don't like to go 3/4 throttle in it so I don't know why they want me to put a turbo on it when they will be scared to ride in it anyway. But I have hit the water doing only 40 MPH across the water and that was almost enough to knock me out so I would not want to hit the water any faster because it will hurt even more then it did at 40 the good thing is I was on a tube being pulled when I hit the water but it hurt.

hey fin i been running v drives for a long time and there is a system called the whirle away i see it used in both jet and v drives to help if the engine lockes up or if you let out of it it will keep everything spinning till its slows on its own it was designed in California
He has the large valve on top of the jet pump to basically do the same, from what I understand. It certainly is a good idea.

While is does still move a little, the difference seems to be huge between having the staging nozzle up or down.......so, unless I'm missing something, the staging seems to bust the pull theory, at least when sitting still or moving at low speed. Perhaps it helps pull while at speed.

no it's still pushing it against the water not pulling it. it pulls water in an pushes it out a smaller hole to create trust just like a jet engine the only difference is the jet engine compresses air and ignites it to produce the thrust and a jet pump squeezes the incompressible liquid through a smaller hole to achieve the same affect
