47RE/48RE no overdrive plus limp mode

  • My issues I found when my truck wouldn’t shift into O/D plus it was stuck in third gear limp mode.

    Was told my transmission needed to be rebuilt so I went and got a salvage one, truck had same no overdrive issues and high rpm in all gears across all speeds up to 50 and truck would die or become unresponsive to throttle after 50. Took to shop and they tried swapping out the temp sensor assembly and harness, gov solenoid, etc, no improvement. I have been told that the ecm is bad. Temp sensor is reading -40 degrees. Shop charged $630 to drop pan each time and fluid each time and had over a month. (They were just throwing parts at it and I refused the unnecessary parts since they did not actually diagnose the issue). The bill was paid, I brought the truck home and decided to look into it myself, (since I finally had free time) swapped out the tps and idle air control valve and truck runs perfectly.

      Good deal! I wonder if they recalibrated the TPS? I had to do that to mine every time I worked on it

      Crazy how you take a vehicle to a "proffesional" and all they do is fck you over and you still have to figure out the issue yourself

    Amazing you have to swap out cheap O.E.M parts for quality aftermarket parts. It use to be the other way around. Good luck👍🏿

      Nobody shows "How" to put the aluminum plug & Two springs back in.. do you have a video of that?? or can you explain?
      I'm in the dirt on my back under the truck and have only pulled pan And filter. Did the other solenoids last week - now doing 4th/Tcc 'cause it still wont go over 65.
      Is there a Trick to make the springs and plug easy -er??

    I dont have a automatic in my 95 4x4 now however I was told by precision transmission that they change the harness ect especially if there is oil in them ..

    On my 48re it was my transmission temp sensors that failed, wasn't the right signal to the computer so it was fooling it, making think its was still cold even on a 90 degree day

      I have a scan tool hooked up to mine Snap-on and I have been at 83 Celsius if no matter what if I drive the truck for Mega ours or just fire it up in the morning from all my sensors that I can see everything seems to be within spec I don't know what the governor pressure supposed to be at it shows around a hundred and something there's actually two different Governor pressures but that's one thing that caught my eye was that after I've done more extensive research I'm having issues with jumping out of overdrive back into fourth or is it 3rd gear I'm not for sure I thought it was a four speed with overdrive which would make it a 5-speed total all gears but I'm not a hundred percent I know people are talking about doing this thing to where you can reroute the wire from the PCM or from the transmission harness but I don't know the exact wire to keep away from the alternator I've watched quite a few videos people talking about two separate the wire but they never tell you exactly what wire it is that you have to separate and they say that there's a wire that goes from up underneath the air cleaner box there is none on mine the only ground I got is coming from the engine to my battery cable on the passenger side I've checked everywhere but for my knowledge the trans inducer holds the temperature can pressure in the same solenoid I was just trying to clarify this a couple days ago I know a little bit about Transmissions never rebuilt one but I think I could I've done heavy in the car world for the last 20 years Collision mechanical everything plus all my family doesn't my uncle rebuild transmissions and rear ends and front ends and driveshafts for the last 35-40 years but anyhow I am going to replace the solenoid pack overdrive and then also the trans inducer and there's a few other sensors there's one sensor that goes in the transmission that they speed sensor then you have another ABS sensor in the rear differential I bought them from my local auto parts store but the other couple parts I'm going to get from my local trans specialty shop that sells nothing but transmission parts and hopefully this will solve my issue too because me not sing the right temperature in Dodge and other forms are stating that between 140 and 170 degrees is what it should be at before overdrive locks in because it sends a signal from the temperature in the trans and Deuce you're still annoyed and sends that back to the PCM or to the other solenoids and the trans and then that activates for the lock-in to stay locked in but I start having issues about a month ago with this truck doing this never before did any problems with that it's always seemed to shift pretty good sometimes a hard shift sometimes a little bit it jerks just a little bit and certain times but from what I do know when I bought this truck three years ago supposedly they have the crayons out of it and put a new torque converter in it mine is a 47re from what I know and I'm hoping that I solve my issue here in the next couple days I've already replaced the throttle position sensor the crankshaft sensor and then now I'm going to be doing both abs and speed sensors 3 solenoids in the transmission on this one trans inducer governor and forth or overdrive lockup so, the three major ones I have the trans pan down a couple months ago and replaced all my fluids and looked at everything but it was at night in the middle of cold winter here in Michigan everything seemed to be okay and it wasn't having them shifting problems at that time and I replace the throttle position sensor also which I know that you can have problems with which that's another way you can test that you can test it with a voltmeter but also a lab scope is the best way to look at the waveform pattern but I don't think it's that I don't think it's the other stuff I think it's that trans inducer but I'm going to replace all three solenoids to be on the safe side hope this help somebody good luck

    So do I have to do the upgraded version of the governor pressure solenoid? Or can I just use the same original part but new

    I jus had this start happening an like you said I turn truck off drive bit it's fine but no overdrive an my trans was built 8 months ago billet everything an all upgrades hoping it's something easy

      Sam as me! Brand new. My issue was ultimately the overdrive harness and solenoids being damaged by the transmission shop. I have no idea why shutting it off and driving again worked. My guess is the fluid was hot at that point and flowed better

    Why even change the wiring harness? I just changed out the overdrive solenoid and it was painless when leaving the old wires in place.

    Hey man I got an 03 that's doing the same thing but it also want light up on the dash that it's actually in Drive, Reverse,1st or 2nd but I've changed the TPS that didn't do it and it was having the same problems your truck If you could help me it would b grately appreciated

    My 03 HO 5.9 cummins has not even 1k on the full billet stage 2 transmission. Stuck in 3rd gear

      That’s what mine was doing. Trans shop damaged my overdrive solenoids

    You cannot remove the plug and wiring without removing the valve body.
