  • TotalMix FX mixer interface is very simple and straight forward. On the top row are the Hardware Input channels, the Middle row of faders are your software outputs.The bottom row faders are your hardware output channels.
    With the control room section in TotalMix FX you have advanced functions like speaker switching, talkback, cueing and front panel controls will work properly.

      there's a lot to learn about TotalMix FX, I'm really glad you decided to make new set of videos, many thanks for that - despite I've learned a lot already, many people still ask me for advice regarding RME stuff, so it's great to have features covered on your own official youtube channel :)
      I've had some batch of questions in the past, posted them at your forums, actually figured them out later (pretty quickly) on my own,
      yet I think those were some of a bit more advanced interesting things, not immediately understandable for newcomers, so might be useful to cover them in some of your next beginner videos maybe?

    This is my view of what the problem with the TotalMix user interface is.
    The reason TotalMix is so confusing is because in order to start using it you have to know several "hidden" user interface "secrets" that are impossible to know without googling or looking at videos like this.
    If you don't know these "secrets" you simply cannot use the software. And it may take some time to find out what these "secrets" are because there is not so much as a hint of what they are in the UI. Therefore you might just give up out of frustration.
    This situation usually arises in a UI because the software developers KNOW all these "secrets" and therefor they doesn't even realize that they are secrets. So they don't see the problem. I work as a software developer too and have done so for almost 30 years, and I have found myself in this situation many times over. But when this happens (you think something is simple but the end user complains it is not) you cannot allow yourself to think that your users are stupid. Instead you have to realize you have made a poor job as a developer of the UI. And you have to force yourself to find ways to make the UI more intuitive. There are ALWAYS ways to do that.
    I think RME should take all complaints about the TotalMix UI seriously. It has some pretty basic and serious UI design flaws. It is designed almost opposite to how an intuitive UI should work.
    One of the first "secrets" you have to learn with TotalMix is that you are supposed to first select an output in row 3 and THEN you can select how much of every input you want going into that output. And when you switch to another output by clicking it you also switch to COMPLETELY different input levels for every single input, that are only applicable to that one particular selected output. When you first start using the software and click around you may never realize this is how it actually works, which makes it super confusing. And that is just one of all actions you need to learn how to achieve in the software.
    So, when you click on different output channels, do you change EVERYTHING in all input channels? No, you don't. You change only the level and panning, but nothing else! Also completely unintuitive. How are you supposed to know which parts of an input channels UI that are linked to an individual output and which input settings are not related to outputs? You have to KNOW this because there is nothing in the UI that reveals it. That is also less than optimal UI design.
    I would say that every time a user has to KNOW something that cannot be easily and intuively understood from the UI design the UI developer should sit back and think hard about if there is any way to make it more obvious. And there are always ways to do this.
    It is also not a good UI design to have to do something at the bottom first (select an output in row 3) and then something above it in row 1 and 2. It is not the way people are used to working. Normally you start at the top and work your way down or go from left to right.
    It is also not obvious in the UI why some of the outputs in row 3 sit to the right and the rest to the left. When you KNOW it, it makes sense and is very practical, but a UI should not be designed like that. It should be obvious in the UI that the left and right outputs are grouped like that for a reason and this should not be a "secret" you have to learn. The reason (I am actually guessing now because I don't know yet) is that the rightmost group is there for easier access (called the "Control Room")? But how is it any easier than if they were in the left group? I have no idea. One more "secret" that I have yet to try to find out about.
    It is also a UI "secret" (not obvious) that the rightmost of the outputs in the right group also has a very special role that none of the other output channels in the right output group have. That is the only channel that gets dimmed when the dim-button is pressed, for instance. Again, I could be wrong, but that is how it seems to me and it is not abvious at all in the UI.
    The software IS powerful. I do understand this. It is just a pity that all this functionality is hidden behind an unintuituve UI that doesn't make sense until you have learned all the "hidden secrects" that you NEED to know to work with TotalMix.
    I myself am right now in the midst of this learning process and it is actually quite frustrating, considering the simple tasks this software is supposed to assist with.
    I know that I am not stupid and I have been working for 30 years as a software developer. I have been using music software for over 15 years. But this software makes me feel REALLY stupid. The UI just does not make sense to me - and apparently a lot of others feel this way too.
    I think that once I have been able to learn how the UI actually works, I would be able to say how it SHOULD have been designed to be much more intuitive. But to what use by then?
    I think that with a bit of effort (maybe hiring a good and creative UI designer) RME could change this UI to be VERY easy to use and very intuitive.
    This video is really a lot of help (and I will look at all of them) but a better idea than making videos to explain an unintuitive interface would be to redesign the interface so that you don't need to make videos about it.

      What a great and simple observation to point out that you start with the bottom row and then work with the top 2 rows. Thank you for taking the time to detail this out! Thank you to RME for putting out these videos AND to users like you for other tips to make it easier. And I agree, the UI itself is powerful but not intuitive.

      I agree with everything you wrote - and hardware wise RME is king - but UI should be replaced by UX. It can look ugly as shit but still be intuitive to use. It’s basically the User Experience that counts imo. Still, great comment man.

    A lot of people still don't get it because for some reason the video cuts away from the laptop screen at exactly the moment you really need to see what's going on! The point would be so much clearer if you could watch how the faders change position when selecting/highlighting the 'Phones 1' strip or the 'Main' strip.

Especially there is no helpfull videotutorial how to set up a complete voice recording session with this device, using a mac and a normal studio mic. RME, I love you, but I´ve never felt so stupid as when I try to get my head around Total Mix. I´ve owned my Babyface for surely ten years, but I still find myself spending hours trying (and failing) to route things in TE whenever I get some new gear I want to connect. I understand I´m not an advanced user by any means, and there are probably a couple of core concepts that I´m missing, but I´ve been into making electronic music since mid 90s, I´m not a total newbie. There must be a way to create an interface that is a bit more intuitive and still offers the flexibility of the current UI.

    With two RME AES 32 cards installed, it would be a great when having the option to route the main output from the second card via the Total Mix software into the first card to enable direct monitoring for all 32 hardware inputs via one output. Atm this scenario would need a physical AES/EBU connection between the two cards. . . Just having one large TotalMix window for 32 tracks [even expandable] and not two 16-tracks windows would be nice too. You are a great company because everything I've bought over the years just works flawlessly and stable. Thanks

  • @TheGreatConstantini

    RME. Thank you for replying to my comment. My issues with total mix may have not been a routing issue at all and may be a clocking issue as far as getting my tracks in Cubase. I had set everything to clock from the ADAT but did not realize that the ADAT was clocking @96Khz and the session was at 88.200Khz . As for not seeing all eight tracks I may have an optics cable issue. The fiber optics is old. I’ve never heard of them partially breaking and only routing 4 channels though. They usually just snap clean inside and don’t work at all. The good news is the other tracks are not necessary for most of the archiving work so far. But I may still buy another one to see. Thanks again.

    • @parityflux
      @parityflux Год назад

      This is 2 yrs old, and I am sure you figured it out. For people with the same concern: any time you push 96 or 88.2kHz into an ADAT pipe, modern equipment will S/MUX it leaving only the first four channels. If you push in 192kHz, it will put out only the first 2 channels. S/MUX is a multiplexing method to get a higher bitrate out of the old ADAT protocol. When implemented at speeds above 48kHz, S/MUX effectively reduces the maximum available channels to accommodate the higher bitrate.

      With "gain" you set your input level to a "nominal" level to where you can record and/or mix. It can be a fully adjustable gain or just a switch between to setting Lo Gain/Hi Gain. With the volume knob on your synth you can also adjust the input level.

    There seems to be a lot of beginner guides like this online, but not so many guides for advanced features. I would enjoy seeing more videos on syncing multiple units, using external midi controllers (like the BCF and others) to control the various aspects of TotalMix. For example, I am unsure how to access the "solo" function using the BCF2000, as it's two channel buttons are used for "mute" and "fader group". Both useful features, but I like using solo too!

    Thanks. Yes i have a question. My Nord Stage is connected to my RME UCX via inputs 5 & 6 on the back. In totalmix i grouped them into one stereo channel. I want to hear the sound coming out of it but no sound from the monitors. On the other hand when i open up cubase and open a new audio stereo channel with these inputs routed to it, i can hear the sound. So going thru cubase - i get sound, but just for playing without a daw and wanting to hear the sound of the instruments connected straight to the monitors - i get nothing. On Totalmix when i play the Nord Stage, the channel visuals show incoming signal, i also bring its fader up. The output channel also shows incoming signal, but still no sound. By the way something weird: when i assign outputs 1 & 2 as my monitor output - the channel showing the signal is 3 & 4. In short, very strange and confusing.

    Hi. thanks for the videos. The basic operation looks easy. I an just ordering a Fireface UCX II. What I don't quite inderstand from the videos and hopefully can you make a clear video perhaps just explaining this point: HOW do you actually assign your DAW channels to individual playback channels in Total Mix, and HOW do I record individual INPUTS in my hardware onto INDIVIDUAL tracks on my DAW. EG, if I'm recording 4 seperate mic inputs - say 2 from the hardware, and another 2 from AES input from another preamp/interface, how do I then route those 4 channels to individual tracks on my DAW. I use Adobe Audition. I think if i fully understand that I certainly am good for the rest of my life!

    • @RMEAudio
      @RMEAudio  3 года назад

      You select the respective channel in your DAW. If your DAW only shows channel numbers, for example 1-12, then you can count the channels in TotalMix FX in the respective fader row (hardware input) from left to right.
      Please note that you have to count the channels that are hidden in the channel layout, as they are still active.

      If you are used todo everything with Cubase, you can switch TotalMix to the DAW mode. (ruclips.net/video/KYheMTswSaY/видео.html) Then al routing is done by within DAW with low latency. If you would like to have, direct, hardware zero latency monitoring plus more flexibility in routing your signals, you can use the Full Mode of TotalMix FX

    Hi I have a routing question. Though there is an outline for the reason and it's kinda a special request.
    I want to purchase the RME UCX II and read the manual already and found that it has 1/4" balanced and unbalanced jacks in the 1/6 outputs on the back.
    I just purchased Audeze LCD-XC headphones and found their L/R is a little off... I want to run balanced outputs to them with dual 1/4" balanced jacks from the back of the RME..
    Head hurts: The full cable would be: (Mini 4 pin xlr from L/R of headphones to 4pin xlr male to 4pin xlr female to dual 1/4" balanced TRS Jacks) I Thought if I did a return track to the RME panned left and then sent it to say channels 3/4 and pan right to 5/6 both mono I could have both L/R output balanced.. Is this possible?
    This is all to avoid purchasing a balanced 4 pin xlr DAC on top of the RME and upon not knowing if SonarWorks software tunes or allows for Pan tuning of Headphones.. Trying to get info before spending thousands.

    • @JPDC624
      @JPDC624 3 года назад +2

      @pkdick1 Easy, just think of it as your motherboard/laptop audio. They should call it PC/Mac input, not software! So if you open iTunes and play a song, TotalMix needs to get it, right? That’s the middle channel of faders. The trick to getting it working is working bottom-up: select your main or headphone out-it, whatever you are listening to, then push up the fader in the middle row where the meters are bouncing, then you’ll hear it!

    Hey Guys. I am running my mid/high and bass speakers with a DSP speakermanagement (DBX PA+) and 2 amps (1 Amp = Monobass / 1 Amp = Stereo High/Mid). I am thinking about using my Fireface UC doing the speakermanagement and send the signal to the amps directly from the outs out the soundcard. 1 Out to Monobass/Amp, 2 Outs Stereo L/R to Speakers Mid/High. This way i could skip the DBX and safe another A/D + D/A routing. Is it possible doing setups with Totalmix and use crossover/filters/frequencies for the outputs of the Fireface UC?

    • @JeffPetersenSynthax
      @JeffPetersenSynthax 5 лет назад

      Hi Marcel, the Fireface UC has no DSP for EQ, so it does not have any way to work as a crossover. If you can do this with software and output the discrete channels to the Fireface UC, that could work.

    This software would be so much better if it had a dedicated sends on fader button that is either on or off ( with say, the selected destination channel flashing ) took me ages to figure out that it automatically goes into sends on fader mode if you highlight the destination channel.
    It's not intuitive when you first look at it. I mean, I was looking in the sub menus for routing options when it's actually hiding in plain sight.
    And I say this as a touring FOH live sound engineer used to complicated digital desk routing too.

      If you have connected the ADAT output to an ADAT input, and you have a "sync" in the input status in the settings window of your interface, and you send audio to the ADAT outputs, it should arrive at the ADAT input of the second device in the Hardware input row.

    Hello, this will be the first of many questions :). I'm loving the stability of this so far, coming from Behringer and their X-Air program.
    1. What is the default naming convention happening in TotalMix on the channels? I don't understand why the names of hardware and ADAT ins/outs are in the software playback area.
    2. Also, what is meant by "AS 1/2?" I get AN (analog), and Inst, but not sure about AS.

    • @RMEAudio
      @RMEAudio  3 года назад +1

      1. The software playback channels are virtual channels that have the same names as the outputs. The signals from your software arrive there. But these are not automatically routed to the respective hardware outputs. You can configure the routing very flexibly in TotalMix FX. If you do not want to use TotalMix FX and want to work and route directly with your DAW, you can switch TotalMix FX from Full mode to DAW mode under "Options" - "Operational Mode". Then the signals are routed directly to the hardware outputs set in your software. But in this case many TotalMix FX features are not available.
      2. The optical connection is ADAT and SPDIF compatible, so both names are combined here. SPDIF is only a 2-channel format, so this only affects the first two channels. AS means ADAT/SPDIF.
