Best walkthrough on this software BY FAR. A bit embarrassed to admit, I've been using Total Mix for 10+ years and did not know half of this stuff. I only knew the minimum to get it to function, but of course sometimes things were changed accidentally and I be driving myself crazy trying to figure out what the heck I did. I now have a much more comprehensive understanding of the where, why, how, etc. Big confidence booster. Thank you, Barry!
Hi Barry. I've been using TotalMix with Nuendo for 20years now and so many people I know who use RME don't understand the mixer. I am so happy you are opening up this amazing tool to so many people. Thank you A hidden feature in Nuendo with RME is the "Direct Monitoring" option that allows Nuendo's control room to control the TotalMix Mixer. This allows for Zero Latency Monitoring with the control room inside Nuendo. This only controls the channels assigned to the control room. Take a TotalMix snapshot before you start experimenting for the first time. this also works in "Studiomode" . Nuendo >Studio > Studio Setup > ASIO UFX+ > Direct Monitoring option. Enjoy
Barry, I've had my Fireface 800 for probably 20 years or so now, and I never understood TotalMix, but somehow got it to do what I needed it to do. As I was chasing down a latency problem on a new mic on a separate input, I tracked it down to my ignorance of TotalMix, which brought me here. Thank you, thank you, thank you for putting this together. I know more about TotalMix now than I ever have, and that's just your first video! On to the next one!
Good Stuff Barry. Totalmix FX is VERY powerful, but you are right it takes a while to wrap your head around it. Your pain (learning Totalmix) is our gain with your helpful videos. Going to watch your 2nd video now. Thank you again. Nice work!
Barry, I am so darn happy you got this going. Thank you so much. It way easier to listen to you explain TotalMIx. I hope you post more videos soon on TotalMix!!!
Your teaching is so effective. Slow and patient with a subject a lot of us have tried to relate to traditional consoles, but became confounded because of the unusual approach RME uses. This tutorial is so much needed. Thank you!
Barry, thanks for putting these together. I learned a few things in this first one and will probably learn much more in the next one. I have the RME UCXII and a Focusrite Clarett+ 8 Pre. I use the 8 Pre for drums and the RME for everything else. I have a couple of mic pres and am just getting started with the 500 series gear. I hope you will cover hardware inserts. I am currently using Cubase Pro 12. I have been trying ProTools Artist, but it has been crashing on my M1 MacBook Pro on Sonoma. We will be taking a look at Session Two after I rest my brain a bit. Thanks again for all of the hard work. I still owe you a beer at Captain Tony's in Key West.
Thanks for doing this. Wish this was around a few months ago. I find naming channels, for me, easier by double clicking at top of channels in main window., rather than opening seperate window. But same difference. Keep up the good work.
thanks to you Berry, I finally decided to buy my brand new UCX III. it will come soon, but right now I'm not anymore intimidated by Totalmix. thanks a lot, bud!
I got a FF UCX III a couple of weeks ago, you will not be disappointed, WONDERFUL interface and TotalMix is incredibly powerful once you get your head around it. ENJOY!
Man I just bought one with a controller, how do you like it now after having some with it? I originally bought the babyface but cancelled it and went with its big bro.
For S/PDIF coax, you don't need a converter box. All you need is one digital (110 Ohm) XLR female->RCA and one digital (110 Ohm) XLR male->RCA cable ... and set "AES Format" in MADIface Settings to "Consumer". Also you can rename channels with doubleclick on their names above the channel faders.
Excellent. You are spot on about the RME tutorials - they fried my brain! This series of tutorials however have brought clarity and calmness to my aging neurons.
Nice intro to TotalMix! I've actually been using RME gear and TotalMix for about 10 years now but I always get the feeling that I learned just enough to get it to do what I want and I'm not taking for advantage of some really powerful possibilities. Excited to check out the rest of the series!
You are absolutely correct about totalmix being illogical. You are also correct about warm audio quality control issues. I bought a brand new wa73 eq and the wa47. The wa73eq had scratchy sounding pots on the eq from day one. The wa47 sounded good but developed a hum three years later that I couldn't fix. (Subscribed)
Great video, I experienced same problems and still I'm not capable of controlling Totalmix the way I want. Please share more content about it. I'll really apreciate your effort. Thanks
Thank you, I have an Hybrid mixing setup for recording and mixing with a Fireface802 + Ferrofish Pulse 16...and I never ever use Total mix...I guess this Is the right time to learn what I have been missing untill now.
So much appreciate your walking us through the nuts and bolts with such patience and attention to detail. You are enabling unimaginable musical prospects and possibilities with this instruction.
Dude! This video is a HUGE help! I've been using RME (DSP Digiface and Babyface Pro) for more years than I can count, along with Cubase. TotalMix has always been a challenge and I have often thrown my arms up in frustration. Your video sheds so much light and unshrouds so much mystery. Thank you for your excellent videos and keep up the good work.
Thanks Barry your videos have given me the confidence to cross dress too. I also have a nasal hillbilly timbre in my voice but thanks to your advice with Waves plugins, I’ll probably be back on top of the billboard charts. ❤
Hey Barry ! Thanks a ton .Absolute superfantabulous session. Love the way u teach slowly and in details.. and special thanks cause there is no unnecessary background music to it.. its so disturbing and irritating . Thank u ❤🙏🙏🙏🙏 U r the best
I absolutely love the way you explain everything! I will be jumping into RME within the next year so I'm really grateful that you've done this! Thank you
TotalMix while using an Octamic XTC is another thing I've been struggling with since there are so many options to send the control signal to the mic pre extension device however the great thing about it is the ability to control all the 48V, AutoSet, pad and of course gain from TotalMix on the additional mic pres. I've had a few problems with the UFX and Octamic somehow getting out of sync with one at 192 and the other at 96 or some other combination. I've also noticed maybe, not quite sure yet, that it is best to have TotalMix running before powering on the interface and any aux devices. This may be pure luck but it seems to prevent some configuration sync issues.
Hi Barry, thank you so much for this, I am waiting to get the Fireface UCX II, it looks like they will be back in stock at the end of this month, so these videos will help me a lot to get things set up 🙃
Barry - Thanks. Your videos are always honest and thoughtful. One thing that would have helped a little in this video was actually showing your interface so we could have a visual of what it looks like. I have the babyface pro so my interface would look much different than yours. Thanks
Thank you thank you thank you!! Just hooked up my UFX and Ferrofish briefly looked at total mix and thought “ NOW WHAT”! As soon as I saw this, the mist started to clear.
For me it's very important to have an audio interface with dsp mixer like total mix fx. It is very helpful when streaming and recording because it doesn't push the cpu of your computer. Rme babyface is one of my choices for next audio interface and one of the reasons is totalmix.
thanks barry, awesome stuff. i struggled with this about 15 yrs ago with the FF800, I also got UFXII and learned a lot through trial and error and the RME synthax and other tutorials. some of these i have waye hed many many times. thx again
A fab tutorial. And even better it is a series! Liked, subbed and will certainly frequently revisit. I dig my RME interfaces but TotalMix has always been a puzzle. Yes, there is a handbook, but I prefer trying things out. And this is where things go south as TotalMix is not intuitive. And once you mess around with the faders, well, as Barry clearly says: Don‘t do that! Great job, Barry - looking forward to finally unlocking the power of TotalMix! Question: can you pls do a dedicated session on how to use hardware effects in TotalMix ?
It definitely takes a while to master it, (I learned a bit here even though i’ve used it for many years). But it sure is amazingly powerful once you figure it out. RME is the only interfaces I would even consider these days. I currently have an 802 after selling my original UFX for one of the old Apollo’s and regretting it. The new UFX III’s have me drooling. Maybe someday soon. Cheers, thanks for this Barry!
Helping you helping people: A video which explains to you the logic of Total Mix within the first 7 minutes is to be found on the channel REM USA Audio - Synthax and is called “An In Depth Look At TotalMix FX”. The rest of that video is also very informative and contains almost all aspects and options of RME TotalMix FX very, very , very ,very well explained. I think it’s the best video so far on YT concerning RME Total Mix FX. So your knowledge of this video could have saved you tons of time.

I think one of the MOST confusing aspects of TotalMix for someone who has never used it is the fact that looking at the TOP ROW (inputs), the BOTTOM number(s) represent how that INPUT is routed. If you switch that input routing to another OUTPUT, your faders will reset, and you are then looking at how that INPUT routes to another channel / output. It will switch the view for EVERY input...so you have to pay attention to the routing, because EVERY input is routable to EVERY output simultaneously (if desired). It's also confusing that RME placed the section labels at the BOTTOM of the row instead of the top...but that is just a nit pick.
Like typical channel strips in mixing desks it's a top->down design in the top you see wha's going into the channel strip and in the bottom you see where it's routed to after the fader. Makes perfect sense to me the way it is.
@@PopsMartin The signal flow makes sense...putting a label at the bottom instead of at the top ("Hardware Inputs, Software Playback, and Hardware Outputs" is what I am referring to) is confusing at first.
Thanks Barry! (I got the first edition UFX, pretty happy with those converters but I wonder how much better the UFX+ or the recent UFX III converters are compared to the original)
Cornbread over German Engineer Geekspeak every dang time! Thanks so much for doing this. Stupid Q. What is user case scenario for adat OUT? I get adat in, from external pres as example, but out? Used as a virtual routing inside daw? Not quite sure I understand it's functionality. Thx. Keep em coming.
Great videos. For me, Total Mix wasn't TERRIBLE to learn, but the loopback and how it ends back up on an analog input is always confusing to me. Also, the BabyFace Pro in particular doesn't seem to work well with OBS for live streaming. I don't know if that's just the BF, or if it's all RME interfaces. You have to download and install two other applications to "route" the audio in MacOS to get it to show up in OBS. Very frustrating. Other than that, I wish they would have allowed use of the DSP in TotalMix for the BF to have compression. I was disappointed when it didn't.
Just got an UFX III and I think I tried to sell myself on it knowing I can’t stand Total Mix. I should have probably gone Lynx or Carbon. Yes Carbon. I am not leaving Apple even though I have been contemplating it over the last 4 years and I am a Pro Tools guy plain and simple. If this doesn’t do the trick its going back and getting exchanged
Hi, I have been working on my routing setup in TotalMix with my Babyface Pro FS to have clean, low latency sound on my Vox, Gtr, drum pad, and midi instruments in separate tracks) for setting custom panning etc and I'm looking to have this done in Totalmix so I could then bring it into a Livestream, plus recording of live session. Barry, I kept hearing clicks and pops then I discovered this check box called "Iso Streaming" on the RME driver ( I have a RME UFX III). I had no clue what it does I read and read it and still do not understand it. I checked the box and guess what? I the once in awhile pops and clicks went away. Its different than the buffer size effect. Can you go over that at all? I would appreciate it.
Regarding the playback fader, is it best practice to leave that all the way up for a basic setup, then adjust volume via the output or in DAW/system, or can you lower the playback fader as an effective way to limit system audio? In my setup, I usually have that slider about 1/2 way to 3/4 up depending on content, but my output slider is pretty low too - yet the levels all work out and I haven’t had any real issues so far, just asking for best practice. I typically keep my output between -18 and -22.
Barry, my daughter said you need some throat coat tea when doing these videos. Other than that everything is perfect! This was a great review and I learned a few new things. UFX+ brother here.

Barry, thank you. I've read the manuals and watched RME's videos but nothing comes close to the 3 superb tutorials you have here. Well done!
Thanks Barry. I love RME but TotalMix is VERY intimidating. Thank you for taking the time to explain it.
RME for life!! I'm still on the UCX-2013 and will upgrade to the UFX 3 in the near future. Thanks for sharing the knowledge Brother! Best Wishes!!
Thank you!!! For years and years I’d only scratched the surface. Totalmix always intimidated me but I feel less dumb now 😊

Thanks Barry, very useful and needed tutorial series. Btw, you can rename channels by double-clicking their names w/o going to channel layout window.

Does the same things go for the Babyface pro?
Regarding the playback fader, is it best practice to leave that all the way up for a basic setup, then adjust volume via the output or in DAW/system, or can you lower the playback fader as an effective way to limit system audio? In my setup, I usually have that slider about 1/2 way to 3/4 up depending on content, but my output slider is pretty low too - yet the levels all work out and I haven’t had any real issues so far, just asking for best practice. I typically keep my output between -18 and -22.
OMG! You can turn it off. Who knew! You earned a "like" in under three minutes!

Barry, my daughter said you need some throat coat tea when doing these videos. Other than that everything is perfect! This was a great review and I learned a few new things. UFX+ brother here.
I’ve been struggling with a scratchy throat from my woodworking.
