Been a hardcore Assassin's Creed fan since 2010. Played every game multiple times to 100% Sync, read most of the novels and comics and watched all the movies...
And Valhalla is my third favourite Assassin's Creed game. A beautiful, emotional, spectacular, multilayered, rich and pure Assassin's Creed experience that brings in so much new lore, does more for both the ISU element and the Modern Day than any game since Assassin's Creed III and ties into EVERY prior game in seamless and exciting ways.

I can totally see the criticism for this game. A lot of it is deserved and I think there is a lot of stuff Ubisoft can fix with their games. But I love this game. It was so much fun, raiding monasteries, sneaking through cities, the open world, and the story to some extent just worked for me. I love this time in history so I feel like I have a little bit of bias. Not my fav AC but it's definitely up there. My main complaint is how big it is. @bluelink142 2 года назад +25

Valhalla as a game is fantastic. What I find most people have issues with is the fact that it doesn't feel like an Assassin's Creed game. Which is true. Although there are trace elements that give you the option to play that way, it doesn't feel like an AC game at all. You play as a screeching regal viking raiding villages. So I can understand peoples frustration, especially the fact that they marketed it as an Assassin's Creed game. But most reviewers are biased to that fact and give the game as a whole a bad review. Which I think is unwarranted. The story is still great, combat is amazing, visuals are stunning, the world is vast. I feel like if they would have marketed Valhalla as it's own game and not intertwined it with the Assassin's Creed series, it probably would have gotten a much more positive response in general.
So long story short: if you go in with the mindset that you're just playing a viking themed open-world RPG, and not another Assassin's Creed game, you'll have a great time. Just imagine the game is simply called Valhalla, and pretend the "Assassin's Creed" part of the title doesn't exist lol.

My only complaints were: A. Unless someone is a history nerd like myself, all of the side-quest easter eggs would go completely over their heads. B. The story didn't go far enough into the history of why the Norse were migrating south, why they marched on Lindisfarn, and the overall cultural motivation. Kind of the same complaint I had with Odyssey, where it's set in the middle of a very important war, but barely touches the real history of why the Peloponnesian war was happening, and what its consequences were.

I agree with the lack of sidequests point. I also thought it was random filler, but honestly I'd take those over a bunch of sidequests anyday.
As far as your point on the gear... that's the entire point. They made it that way specifically so we as players can choose to keep a favorite weapon all game if we want. And that's how I play. It even makes sense because protagonists typically have their favorite swords deigned specifically to suit them. Not running around picking up what random dudes drop, never keeping a sword.
Witcher 3 forcing players to switch weapons because our last favorite one became irrelevant by being level locked is absolutely the dumbest most trash decision I've ever seen made. I fucking love the Witcher series but whoever designed that was off crack. Literally forcing me to waste my money dismantling gear I only used for an hour and some change after I put runes in it just because I "found" something better. A random axe on a random enemy somehow scales higher than my enchanted shit because lEveLs lmfao no.
The weapon "upgrading" from Witcher 3 is absolutely atrocious too. Gotta run around and find level-locked pamphlets for gear, just for you to find some common item that's better on a thug an hour later.
That's how you end up with everybody using the same shit because there's only 1 or 2 really good weapons in a game.
I'm glad they dropped that mess.

It’s best to play Valhalla as a Viking game that take place in the Assassin’s Creed Universe and has a massive amount of new lore, you’ll have more fun that way. Not to mention, there was a bunch of people in Assassin’s Creed lore who was trained by assassins and never joined the Brotherhood, Eivor is just another addition to that group. For example, Gabriel Laxart was a French man who was given basic training by Assassins to protect Joan of Arc. Afterward, the Assassins gave Gabriel offer to join the brotherhood but declined because he don’t think he has the dedication.

I find this 100 times better than oddesy rather than having to grind menial quests to get gear levels to be effective but the power levels feel much more fleshed out and the infinite respec and auto assign it makes it so much less stressful, and they definitely did change art style, it kind of seems more like a story book painting or scroll of sorts the start also doesn’t seem as boring as oddesy or one of the later segments of origins and so far it doesn’t seem to pay to win or anything and the ability times are so much more rewarding and make exploration much less tedious and much more rewarding also they got rid of the boats, well the navel battle boats I also like the raiding aspect albeit I don’t like shouting alalalalala and slamming an axe into someone’s skull rather than sneaking around and shanking my way around, but the game seems to be pretty solid in its current state, it turned into a rise of kingdoms ad for a minute and it was great, and one of the guys looks like a standard nord from Skyrim I’m definitely buying the season pass

The entire main campaign of conquering England is made up of "side quests"... and none of them are memorable, none of the conquests have a careful or emotional narrative, the misdirection combined with the robotic and poorly acted characters cannot be improved by the beautifully created open world nor by the infinite content of the game.
And besides, that campaign of conquest consumes all your time, the story about the assassins is brief, uninteresting and despised by the main character. And the actual plot of the game, the Isu plot, is convoluted, brief, and doesn't quite fix the bad taste of much of what the game offers ad nauseam.
It is a good game in general, but everything that is poorly planned, directed and written is not solved with better definition and frames.
Anyway, I'm glad you enjoyed it, I'm happily enjoying Mirage, and I hope that in the future Ubisoft really surprises us with a magnificent AC.

I didn't watch your first review but when you said how the combat lacks weight, animations are sloppy, etc. while saying it was different in Origins and Odyssey, it seemed a bit counterintuitive to say the least.
That feeling of playing an MMORPG where hits don't have any impact and just push up numbers, having no weight in most animations, transitions from one animation to another being way too quick, ragdoll going all over the place with enemies flying after dying and the overall movements of the character feeling unnatural WAS there since Origins. I personnally don't see any difference in the previous entries, I would even say Odyssey looks even more amateurish than Valhalla so I'm not sure where this argument came from in the first place.
I hope they fine tune their combat system to get both a "soulslike" system and decent animations along with a good overall feel when hitting opponents. When comparing the combat to AC3 animationwise, it really looks like we're playing a mobile game now. I'd like them to return to a more down to earth system where enemies don't fly away in a cartoonish way and combat looks more "realistic" (no magic abilities and so on).

Am I the only one who noticed that the vegetation (grass, bushes) on the island of “Skye” do not react dynamically to the player, as it works in the basic version of the game? The grass does not deform when you step on it and the bushes do not move when you walk through them? I specifically checked this and in England all bushes and tall grasses are movable. I wonder if Ubisoft screwed this up or is it a bug?

For ACV, you really need to take it slow. The game is very long and rushing it gonna be pain. For the combat also, I feel it better than both origin and odyssey. While origins combat animation feel very basic how bayek swing the sword and few animation, skill he can use. Odyssey combat is extremly floaty, barely feel any contact at all.

See here’s my deal. I’m a big fan of all 3 recent assassins creed games. Origins had a lovely story and beautiful animations and setting was sublime but had a bit of an issue combat animation style it felt a little too fast, not carrying much weight. Odyssey was absolutely breathtaking. Great story with characters you grow to really connect with, lots of amazing settings, fun combat style and immersive world. My gripe with this one however is a big one….. I hate the spear of leonidas. I get it that it plays a massive role in the story and it’s a part of our characters but…. It’s the combat. The spear is present in two of the weapon types, one of which I use most frequently in any AC game which is the one handed sword. I’m not allowed to wield just a sword or just a dagger, it must be accompanied by that stupid spear. It’s not fun. It also doesn’t feel like a good replacement for the hidden blade when it comes to assassinations. The animations are over the top and annoying to watch, it’s supposed to be discreet. As for Valhalla, it’s very apparent that this game requires some help but aside from the bugs and technical issues, it’s fun. I think the combat is acting far better only because it doesn’t take 15 minutes to kill one enemy even with abilities. Weapons also feel like the have weight and I love how you equip them. I also love the setting more than origins, it feels more varied than desert, desert, and more desert. The return of the hidden blade was a big big plus because we’re back to discreet kills. Story was great though felt slow in some areas. My issue lies in one annoying issue….. ALL OF GLOWECESTRECIRE IS ANNOYINGLY SCREWED! It all stems from one stupid issue that they refuse to fix! The god damned mari lwyd costume just shows up whenever you enter that area. It makes the entire region almost unplayable just because I can’t be my character in that one area!

Starting from 2 years ago I've played every single ac game since AC3 and with every single one I had the time of my life. The first one was rogue which I used to play on my PS3 back in the day but officially I'd say it's Origins, and man did I fucking love that damn game. The amazing setting, the graphics, the story ( which is still the best story out of every game I've played till this day, besides rdr2), the DLCs ( which are also the best I've ever played) and just the overall gameplay is amazing. Anyways, since I played all of those games I kinda wanted to play Valhalla, but every single video I watched bashed so hard on that game that I didn't even want to try it out, even random comment sections in ac videos were constantly ranting about Valhalla. But there's something to it that keeps me coming back to find reason as to why I should buy it. After this video and the current steam sales... Maybe I will.
Though I've been also thinking about buying the Witcher 3 so I'm still deciding

As a huge AC fan since 2008, I got the game for sale a week ago fully expecting to hate everything about it after seeing what many of the og fans/critics thought about the game(last game I liked was origins, still prefered the originals). Lo and behold, 45 hours later I'm pretty much in love with this game, this is the first time since The Witcher 3(coincidence?don't think so) that i've put so many hours in such a short time span without getting tired of playing the game at all. Yes, this is still not the AC i wanted, but hell is it the rpg i didn't know i wanted. I've had this hole in me since i completed TW3 and it's DLCs and somehow this game is the only one that managed to move me in the same way(still not as good as TW3 of course!). I liked most of the arcs so far, the raids, looting etc have been satisfying because they have a purpose for me(village), and although not my favourite ac char by a long shot I do quite like eivor(the male voice actor did an A+ job imo, love his tone). I also really appreciate the lack of clutter on the map compared to the other rpg AC's and i feel like their questing aproach works really well for me although it could always be better. Overall i feel like the game whilist having it's issues(lack of ac lore and main character, parkour/stealth could be much better of course) I feel like the game has gotten way too much flack just for being a Ubi game in 2022, I legit think it would be praised if it was made by a different/less known company. Feeling like this will be another Unity case, with people hating it at launch and loving it years later.
P.S. even the modern day seems to be the best it's been since ac3, although that doesn't say much, enjoying the animus glitches or whatever they're called.
P.S.P.S Huge props to you for admitting you were ""wrong"", very few people would do that and even fewer reviewers.

I find this quite funny. All in all AC Valhalla is actually a good game till first 30ish hours and then its just the same thing repeated again and again.
The best one can rate valhalla as is a decent game just a slight bit above average and the reason is very very apparent.
Just take imaginary scenario - What will you remember about the game say 5-10 years down the line? - NOTHING.
There is nothing iconic about this game. All the cities (I would prefer to call them village by how small they are) look just like a copy paste and why not as there possibly couldn't be anything interesting in them going by the timeline.
There is literally no meaning to any of the services be it merchant or stables or anything as there is nothing EXCLUSIVE.
When did it happen - Oh! A new merchant, let's see what he has.
When did it happen - Oh! A new equipment marker, let's see what it is. (probably part of some set, don't know what it will look like? Oh let's not forget the astronomical cost to upgrade it.)
When did it happen - Oh! I have enough silver, let's buy that cool - thing. ( its soo sad that I have to write THING cause there literally isn't anything that will make you excited or
save your silver so that you can get it)
When did it happen - Damn! I will come back to this place cause it has this unique ..... ( no place has anything unique ).
I can keep writing but all this is after my 40ish hours or gameplay. The one and the only thing that this game does write is its GRAPHICS and ENVIRONMENT. Although the setting / time period is super bad for a AC Open world title cause there is nothing ICONIC about it.
Please enlighten me if I am wrong as I really really want to be wrong. I bought this game for
a huge sum and I feel sad to see my money wasted. I don't want to just blatently critisize it as I have given significant money and time to the game so please understand where I am coming from.
TO VIDEO CREATOR: If the game made you give up once then its the failure of the game itself. (This happened for a pretty playerbase). They certainly didn't design the opening in a good manner.

I like Valhalla but it has too much filler type content and it's unnecessarily big. Combat isn't challenging at all. Once you level up your character enough then even on the hardest difficulty the game is very easy to play. Also during the story the facial animations don't look that good you feel less attached to the emotions of the characters. I have sunk 100 hours into the game and I have only reached until Lincolnshire. The game is unnecessarily big. More than half the armor and weapons in the game are useless. Everything good is locked behind a paywall.

@@piotrmontgomerytv7786 I agree with you bro, this is one of the most beautiful games of all time in every aspect. The game is definitely an over-hated game for no specific reason, it definitely is a masterpiece.

@@theRogMick It's sad how good games like: MW2019, Assassin's Creed Valhalla or Enlisted are getting hate for what? Being new?

@@piotrmontgomerytv7786 Bro so many whiners these days. Some whiners even act like experts and feel like this world revolves around them and they know everything, some say AC Valhalla is not an AC game lol, why? Because it's a new game? They forget the fact that it is the most selling Assassin's creed game of all time. Also it is worth noting that AC Valhalla has many elements that are consistent with the series, such as stealth, parkour, historical settings and lore. It also has some new features that make it unique and innovative, such as raids, settlements and choices. I think it’s a great game that respects the legacy of Assassin’s Creed while also exploring new possibilities.

i AM pretty new to gaming on pc(many years since gamed at all untill covid that is in 2020).
But i actually loved this game more when it was new compared to today(mayby due to graphics being something amazing for me in this game compared to old school playstation 1+2 and amiga+c64 i played on before)
Many changes and stuff i think i liked more at launch compared to now(or it might be that several 100s of hours of gaming in this world made me sick to play more due to getting a overdose of same views in england+irland+paris dlc,Still have the dawn of ragna....dlc to play and heard great things about it so might still get 100+ hours onto the 2-300+ hours already played during the years in ac.Valhalla)
Sorry if english n so is bad!!
Thanks for a great review and video again

I bought the game having seen all the negative reviews and still enjoyed like I thought I might, but I honestly hate how most of the weapons feel, the spears feel too slow or did too little damage, great swords felt too weak for how slow they were and oh. My. God. Why can I not mute the metal clang on my footsteps when I have a shield equipped, even if I had a wooden shield all I’d hear is clang clang clang as I explored, I love shields but can’t stand that noise so I never used them. I did really enjoy the game however, just wish there were more weapons and the skill tree was better

Retrospective review is helpful, thanks for putting this out. I wasn't interested in reviews from launch date as people need to give games more time and patience to review it "fully" imo. Takes courage to look at your past review and criticize it, and admit that you may have rushed through it the first time. Well done!

Thanks :) When I replayed Valhalla, I just couldn't shake the desire to make a video about it. The game is good. Although not perfect and I'm never going to finish it because it's just too long for its sake. Still, it's a fun game!

Then only thing I really wish is that they would have dropped the Assassins Creed title and make it a full historical RPG, without all that science fiction

THAT's a refreshing take ! It is so true that a game clicking or not with you can depend so much on your mindset.
Not long ago I was waiting to finish the stellar Ghost of Tsushima to begin the Wolfenstein games a friend had let me. Obviously after so much subtelty, colorful flowers and meditative sound design, I could not handle akimbo shotgunning nazis in the but. But after a few weeks, now I am really enjoying it.

I’m sort of new to the current generation of assassins Creed games, so Valhalla was the first RPG one I’ve encountered. I have to say that I’m playing it on PS5 and I am loving it, I’m currently 68 hours in, and while that’s been spread over some time, I’ve really enjoyed it so far. I wasn’t planning on 100%, but I’ve come this far so I might as well!
The only thing I could do without is all the key hunting.

I’m not surprised the same studio that made this game also made Origins.
Origins was so freaking good. IMO Origins is the second best AC game behind AC2.
People love Odyssey, but I think it was too big and felt randomly generated.
Valhalla is incredible. It’s world and soundtrack surpasses Odyssey imo.
I still struggle with countering and finding a use for my bird though. Not sure why I can’t mark enemies with my bird.
    Can’t figure out how
