I'll never forget the heart surgery scene of this film, especially the moment when they remove Kong's heart.
I had completely forgotten Linda Hamilton appeared in this.
She probably wishes the same 😏
I hope my man doesn’t skip Mighty Joe Young...still an RKO film about a giant gorilla.
I think he going to do mighty joe separate as he didn't review it after son of Kong
MJYoung was better than Son of Kong and did score a musical hit with “Beautiful Dreamer”. I mean the original film, not the remake which had better FX but a bad screenplay.
Fernando Garajalde hol up. MJY had a remake? And I’m only finding this out now?!
EDIT: wow I’m an idiot. Didn’t know the 90s one was a remake. Brb, gonna watch the 49 original.
You made it happen bro.
I was hoping you wouldn't skip this one. You are so awesome! These reviews rule.
So I guess every Kaiju franchise has had their own worst movie:
Godzilla has Godzilla’s revenge
Gamera has Gamera: super monster
Kong has King Kong lives
And pacific rim has pacific rim uprising lol
Agreed
Godzilla's revenge? Is that the one where Minalla speaks English?
Rinesmyth Yep
@@digitominal "uh Godzilla says I should learn to fight my own battles ya know."
@@Rinesmyth he actually speaks Japanese in the original, and sounds like a girl.
I loved this movie as a kid. I liked it way more than the 76 kong, but probably only because i saw this one more on tv.
I loved this movie as a kid. I watched it so many times. Cried at the end. One of the few movies where as a kid I would watch it again and again hoping the ending would somehow change and Kong would live.
I love the 76 Kong and have a special place in my heart for King Kong Lives. Saw them both in the theater.
I'm really surprised that you didn't mention anything about Baby at the end. I mean that was actually pretty heart wrenching to watch him die as he he holding his son for the first and only time that he would have. He died for his love and his son. Shot up with really good effects works and a climactic score just booming through the speakers. It gave the character a purpose. A mission. More of a fitting end than falling off a building.
You understand how cinema works, thank you for your insight! King Kong Lives might be flawed, but its themes and ideas are powerful.
That last scene where Kong fought the military was pretty cool
Very dramatic. 💀
As a young child this was my introduction to King Kong and monster movies in general (watched it for Linda Hamilton after seeing her in The Terminator) and I kind of loved it; it may not be the best but I think I'll always have a soft spot for it. Some of the scenes have stuck, such as tying the alligators(?) tails together to carry them in his mouth; and seeing such a massive creature (squishing a car under one foot) in live action for the first time really was quite something.
This is the most footage I've seen from this film and even that is too much.
This review is too harsh. This film is a lot of dumb b-movie fun.
It's still the best KONG sequel, not that that's saying much.
Linda Hamilton looking fine as hell in this movie
It's interesting how John Ashton's Lt. Col. Archie Nevitt set the stage for Samuel Jackson's Lt. Col. Preston Packard in KONG: SKULL ISLAND 30 years later.
albion65 Most likely it was Captain Ahab from Moby Dick that was the inspiration for Packard.
I love this movie !! Wish it could be released on digital platforms.
Last comment: as a kid I remember finding the Kong surgery at the start really epic. I think that's a really cool idea. What if we had a world with monsters and y'know maybe some are good or seen as beneficial...or just plain too cool to let die? But they get sick or hurt enough that there is a special team...Kaiju Medical Team! I kinda wanna write that now.
This movie is a guilty pleasure
I agree. Kong’s parents in Skull Island could be reference to this film. I mean he watched them died after being born.
le monke review has arrived
Peter Weller was offered a role in this movie but he turned it down in favor of Robocop!
Good call Peter!
King Kong Lives (1986) is also one of the only american kaiju film with actual suit-mation, until Crank: High Voltage (2009)
It was a hit in Japan and even Konami made a game for Nintendo Entertainment System.
I'm really sick of the Bloomberg ads!
Eww, I'm so sorry.
My mom said she saw this movie in theaters in Mexico and I didn't know what it was about until now
It's funny... This was my first Kong Movie, my introduction to the character, of course at the moment I thought it was awesome, I was six years old and there was no way to know if the movie was good or bad until you watched it on TV but watching it in that old CRT tv with the lights out made for an interesting experience and made me find interest in giant monsters...
I faintly remember that I saw King Kong film where Kong survived at the end and a sequel started with Kong undergoing surgical operation. But I thought that was Might Joe Young because, unless there's a series with the same plot, I have no recollection of theses 2 movies whatsoever lol
To add more info, iirc the climax at the end of the first one has something to do with Kong falling from Ferris Wheel.
4:44 WTF MOMENT that makes the lost world Jurassic Park look like a cartoon lol
I caught the tail end of this movie on tv some time ago. Never knew it was a follow up to the 1976 movie.
I had no idea this was even a thing. Thank you for letting me know this was a thing
Bryce! Long time no see

I actually saw this one as a kid back in South Carolina... seriously, it made the 1976 remake look like freaking CITIZEN KONG or something! How could Kong get any worse after this?!!
4:14 That must be a really big snake. I mean you can see how big the humans are when Kong holds them.
Also I hope that you'll review the movie "The Mighty Kong" which is an animated musical by Warner Brothers.
How incredible!

it's Really Sad that They didn't made a Third Movie in 1996 to turn it into a Trilogy
I remember Kong coming to Lady Kong's rescue a little differently. Y'know it happens when you watch something as a real little kid and you remember stuff differently. In the movie there's a roof with two doors, Kong comes at the last moment stops them from closing completely. Well as a kid I strangely remember the doors being more like shuttle doors and in the side of the silo lady Kong was being kept. I remember there being flashing lights...and I strangely concluded that their plan was to launch lady Kong into space as an experiment and naturally Kong and the humans are able to stop the countdown just in time. Because I knew of apes being sent during the early days of space experimentation...So naturally that was what they were going to do! It's amazing what your kid brain cooks up.
Steven Pressfield writes in The War of Art about how this was his big break finally in his 40s, and what a kick in the balls it was when everyone hated it. None of his friends liked the screenings and when he went out too a small theater and asked casually about it he was told "miss it man it sucks!" Oof!
But hey, at least it was a real failure from really trying! The muse saw this and said "ok, maybe this guy really is finally serious". 😁
I find it rather cool that a Terminator character appears in a King Kong film. Linda Hamilton (who played Sarah Connor in The Terminator) has a different hair colour, though. So it took me a while to realise she was the same person.
I remember seeing this as a kid on TV. The long heart operation did make me feel queasy and one scene gave me a 20 year long fear of skylights after dark. The only other thing I remember is Kong picking a hat out of his teeth.
I remember an artist posting a series of images and profiles on 4chan as an idea for a modern cartoon called "Godzilla: All Monsters Attack." The profile for Kong was a mesh of this and Godzilla vs King Kong. The electrical powers were there and the mechanical heart was capped with a glowing blue lens on his chest over the hole to give it more of a silly sci-fi vibe. The proposed show was supposed to be campy fun and included ideas like Godzilla using Angulas as a weapon and Big G using his atomic breath to fly to other locations.
I liked when kong had vance for night snack, he chewed his head and he pick out his hat
Best Kong movie for me as a kid
can't wait for King Kong 2006, That movie was a large part of my preteen hood!
2005
The only thing that lives is the director’s pay check
I first saw this when I was like 8 & the ending made me cry so hard 😂
I love this film. Always have.
It wasn't that bad. The Producers came by High School (Jefferson County, TN.) for "extras .Some scenes were filmed in Sevier County, TN.
I liked king kong lives, it was good to see kong protecting the one he loves and the best part is when he gets to hold his sone for the first time, it was short but he died protecting his love and his child from the heartless military. It is the one movie that i love the most out of all the kong movies. I wish that they would of had kong smashe every one of the soldiers and not left one alive.
Well, Linda Hamilton should have stuck to a king king sequel rather than a terminator sequel. Just saying.
Waiting for King Kong Lives: Dark Ape.
Queen Kong dumps K.K. for another female ape.
Movie will bomb at theaters and SJWs will blame men for not seeing it.
@@aanda3284 Oh My God, that's very funny. I can't stop laughing. 😅😂🤣
You will always have my view
Its the only movie that i'm aware of, where you get to see King Kong get hit in the head with a golf ball.
This has always been one of my favorite Kong outings. So what if it's cheesy? At least it's got tolerable human characters; the leads in the 1976 movie are so obnoxious you start to wish the ape would just squish 'em.
Great review!
You could also review the Jurassic Park/World movies once you finish the King Kong reviews.
I forgot this movie even existed. lol
No way. It's got it's horror movie moments.
Kong ripping a guy in half, eating another when he's supposed to be a plant eater...
That actually freaked me out from memory, first time I watched it.
it was also missing the music of john barry
Maybe if Kong and lady Kong had a kid kidnapped by the military then the plot would more interesting
Ok, so hear me out but this is how I think the movie should’ve gone. It goes the same as it did up to the death scene. She never gives birth, they never get killed, only sedated and taken back to his island from 1976. Then lady Kong gives birth, and it is albino like in 1933. This all took place before Godzilla vs Boillante. Then a post credit scene takes place after Godzilla vs Mothra of an egg appearing on the island (godzilla jr).
Then before Godzilla vs Mechagodzilla II, a new movie happens where Heisei Godzilla fights Kong to get the egg, as Kong won’t let him on the island. It turns out the government have been watching Kongs island since 1986. So Godzilla leaves, kong and his family are alone, and the government have baby Godzilla, and they sell it to Japan, bringing us to Godzilla vs Mechagodzilla II.
Someone explain to me how King Kong could possibly graduate into the Godzilla, King Ghidorah class?
Hey y'all forgot king Kong gives birth at the end of the movie ( the female Kong that is ) and your right to say the film isn't bad just dull in more than a few spots !
Should call her Queen Kong instead?
The writers should have studied gorillas or had inquired with some scientists on how these animals courts and maintain relationship with their mates.
Yeah they also probably should've consulted some physiologists to determine how an animal can fall 1300 feet onto concrete after having it's guts shot out with machine guns, only to survive after 10 years of being on life support, oh yeah.. reality doesn't matter here.
If they really want blood from a giant ape. They can suck a whole pack of gorillas dry.
The Mighty Kong is WORSE than King Kong Lives. Hope you look at that next.
Willis O'Brien: Ugh I feel disgraced some how.
I love wednesdays bc of this channel
I actually liked the film. I only hated Kong dying, at the end. Why call it KING KONG LIVES, only to kill him again.
Haha should be called King Kong Dies Again.
I had no idea this movie existed until now if I'm being honest lmao
Have you reviewed mighty peking man?
Hey Shut Up Pal, You Just Don’t Get It, King Kong Lives Was The Greatest Kong Movie Ever
They Made A Movie Where They Bring Kong Back From The Dead, And Finding Another Giant Ape Of His Kind, And Then In The End, They Have A Baby Of They’re Own
And You’re Just A Jerk Like That Nostalgia Critic Guy, He’s The Worst, And So Are You
I think I only ever watched this movie one time and though I don't recall not liking it I knew I didn't really want to watch it again
I will like to see a remake of this movie
It's really not as horrible as it's been made out to be. You can see that a lot more effort went into the fx and sets than KK76. Probably because they didnt waste a fuck-ton of money on a ridiculous 40-foot tall Kong robot that looked and performed like shit. If you haven't seen this in a while, give it another look. Being older now and having acquired some patience and wisdom, I see it with more of a discerning eye. It's not great but there's things to appreciate about it.
Fun Fact: If you've seen The Big Hit, you know of the sub-plot involving the video store being up Wahlberg's ass about him not returning their copy of KK Lives. The same thing happened to me in 87 when I temporarily misplaced a rental copy from the local store. It took me a month or so and plenty of snippy phone calls and even threats of collection before I was able to get it back. Thankfully I didnt have to nuke the store like Lou Diamond did.
IMO, it's *lousy,* but thankfully not 'God-awful.' I agree that Dr. Amy Franklin and Mitch are the only two genuinely compelling human characters (Linda Hamilton is heck of an actress), the animatronic/suitimation effects used to bring the apes to life are still competently done, and it has that enjoyable 'B-movie' charm.
I won't deny this is arguably the lowest point for official King Kong films (I say official cause there's litterally a genre of Kongsploitation and good god you want to talk about cheap, look them up), but I could never call this film "terrible". I feel it's mostly bad with some good ideas that occasionally shine through. The female Kong element was a nice change of pace and added something else and something to fight for. I feel this and Son of Kong are films that honestly needed finer tuning on the script, pacing and budget and they would be far better films. But I also feel them as themselves aren't nearly as terrible as people have said they are. To be fair, there's not nearly as many Kong films so there's not nearly as much to judge compared to Godzilla's franchise, which has so many films that the low points feel far, far lower.
Liked the review always did like both 1 and 2 understand alot dont like this one but i enjoy it. But idk if you mention this but Peter Weller was going to be or giving the part of the love interest but he went on to do Robocop.
They way kong kills humans in the film. Lol
Having yourself snapped in half and then getting your guts sucked out like you were just a chicken bone is a pretty memorable way to go.
Any film where Kong survives his fall and is given an artificial heart transplant is *automatically* not that bad. I'm sorry you didn't include the Delorean in your review...my favorite gag in the movie.
I'm curious...is there a chance you might include a brief review of the famous short story, After Kong Fell?
I think King Kong lives is alright I would probably give is a 6.8/10
Kong is such a simp
I know alot of these films won't fit your channel but could you review some of the Ray Harryhausen films.
Will you do Queen kong, mighty peaking man, and A*P*E?
so hear we have the kong film that is said to be the worst, but in my opinion even though i haven't seen this movie it looks better then son of king and ive really want to watch it now, but at least the next film is one of the best in the series 4 out of 5 stars in my opinion can't wait for it. keep up the work man loving it.
I don’t care. The bitter sweet ending is enough to make me forgive this movie for any of its faults.
Sorry but this movie is really good great follow up to the 76 king Kong
I think king kong live should had taken inspiration from the japanse Kaiju film War of the Gargutaun . with male Kong being a more brutal and villian character, while the female trying to subdue and pacify him
Un sacré nanar vraiment ce film est consternant je me souvien du King Kong II il revient et il est pas content il aurait mieu fait de pas revenir .
Do A*P*E next
Have the 3D BLU-RAY
It's bad, but not quite as bad as the ho-ho's from Toho or anything that came after 2005.
Just curious because I haven't watched all of his reviews, but does he give _anything_ one star?
Godzilla Raids Again, Gamera vs Viras, and Gamera Super Monster.
I think this is the only King Kong movie that makes Kong survive, besides the monsterverse and toho versions. That’s because Godzilla’s in them.
Bro, didn’t Mark Wahlberg have this on tape?
Qué efectos tan arcaicos es como ver las películas japonesas de Godzilla.

KONG LUVES
I got a soft spot for this one. I watched it more as a kid though as an adult...yeah it's bad. It seems like the 70s and 80s Kong films have weaker starts and middles...but the final action scenes are suddenly good. Kong vs. combat helicopters on the WTC and here Kong vs. armored cars to protect his mate in labor.
P.S. mmmm those lady Kong boobs!
Huge apes break out of containment and are killing people

It's okay though because they never hit anything.
Can you review A*P*E?
The director's name is pronounced GUY-LER-MAN. Despite the spelling, that's how it's said.
This is the second kaiju film I know that has two members of the same species where one is the oposite gender and them having offspring. First one being Gappa.
This film is...not my favorite at all and when I do see this full film on youtube(before it gets taken down) I always skipped to the kong/lady kong/junior scenes.
King Kong Lives was, sadly, the first Kong movie I ever saw. Back when I was a kid in the early 90's, the original film hardly ever played on TV, and our town's video rental store only had this and the 1976 film, so it was that or nothing. Of course, as a kid, I enjoyed this movie, but looking at it today, it is pretty bad, and I would say it is the worst King Kong film out there. And yet, I have a connection to it, as some scenes were shot in the Smoky Mountains, which I've visited many times in my life, as I live in Tennessee, and some others were done at Fall-Creek Falls, which isn't far from where I live.
Wow do you smile or what
King Kong Lives Is Worst Than Godzilla Final Wars
This movie fucking rocks, you all don't know what you're talking about
Craig
Shot to gory shreds and dropped from the world's tallest building to solid concrete? Nothing a little bed rest and a new ticker won't fix! /sarcasm
For me, the scene in which Kong eats the hick and digs the hat out of his teeth is the movie's highlight. If only that cap had been red...
Agreed that the suitmation is nicely designed and performed (even if the suits are hardly Rick Baker quality), but the SFX are atrocious. My "favorite" effects involve intercutting between wildly different elements. I won't describe the instance at the climax because no spoilers, but Kong's hunting scene switching between footage of a live adult gator (apparently suspended in the air?), a cute li'l baby gator, and store-bought rubber novelty alligators is hilariously cringey.
Dumbest moment: Linda's character, upon discovering the remains of Kong's tormentors, sadly declares that Kong will surely be slain by the military because he's "killed." Lady, he killed hundreds of people in New York City. Did you forget that?
Yeah, hoping imaginary monsters eat "hicks" wearing red hats. Tell you what, go with that until November and tell me how that works for you.
