Kong Skull Island gave us a Kong that will fight Godzilla. The first meeting of the Titans of Cinema in 58 years. I'm grateful for Skull Island.
Skull Island is my second favorite MonsterVerse film next to KOTM. In human villains, Alan Jonah and Packard are awesome.
But Kong actually not gonna win against Godzilla if you watched the Toho's original Godzillas
1:52 I like how they add the detail of Kong looking with care at the humans after he smashes the boulder to Ramarak face.
Didn't even notice that.
This might be one of my favorite Kongs easily. It's a nice change of pace seeing him be liked by his people and hell even protecting other monsters like the Skeer Buffalo. It warms my heart each time Conrad says "we're gonna save Kong."
They did a pretty good job, even if I wanted to see more from John Goodman
Personally my favorite of the Monsterverse films by a wide margin. It's a great homage to the hokiness of the Showa era and is just fun as hell from beginning to end. Also the characters, while one dimensional, are at least entertaining unlike the other movies.

Couldn't Agree More
Actually Bryan Cranston in Godzilla (2014) was very entertaining. So much so that the movie just plummets after he dies. lol.
I agree the quality of this movie made King of the Monsters feel like more of a letdown unfortunately
@@Judd511 as much as I love KOTM I think this film was better.
Likewise. Great setting, great action, and I fully agree while most of the humans were simple they were enjoyable.
This kinda Kong movie was a little overdue, but I’m glad this is what we got rather than the prequel idea they pitched in 2014. Kong needs a new story and this is just about the best we’ve been given so far.
God damn though I still remember how long those ending credits are...I sat through them all five times I saw Skull Island because damn that was a great post-credit scene.
5:50 I see what you did there.
This is so good
Holy that was genius
@@rbvfeehfbudenrj what... I didn't got it 👀😬
“Kong finally breaks free of the shackles of the original movie” as he plays a scene of Kong breaking out of chains, which are shackles
@@rbvfeehfbudenrj ohh man it was that obvious.. Lolz I m feeling like a dumb ass ri8 now 😂
Fun Fact: In Hank Marlow's Place In The Film, there's a camera hidden that was used in the original 1933 film, confirmed by it's VFX artist Jeff White.
That is a pretty cool fact.
This is the best monsterverse movie for me, it's both well made and extremely fun to watch. It also has the most likable and fun cast of characters to watch and interact off each other.
Alex youtube channel nah not really
Super curious about what reviews will come next.
I suggest either:
- The Heise Mothra Trilogy
- Gorgo and then Gappa (since they are practically the same movie)
- The Showa Toho movies you haven't reviewed yet (Atragon, Mysterians, Varan, Yog, Frankenstein Conquers the World and so on.)
Heisei Mothra Trilogy??? No thanks. Those movies were awful. The only redeeming parts were the special effects. Other than that... Ugh. lol.
@@alexyoutubechannel8175 Ha ha ha. Yeah I guess that would be entertaining. :P
Any of the monster movies with Ray Harryhausen attached would be great
I’d like to see Up from the Depths review Little Shop of Horrors.
I would love to see beast from 20,000 phantoms and also the Jurassic Park movies.
I also think that the final battle between Kong and the big Skull Crawler is the best fight in the monsterverse as it is the best choreographed and has the least amount of human interuption. It also gets bonus points for being in the daylight.
This movie has some of the best CGI monsters.
I love this movie, arguably the best of the Legendary/Monarch franchise.
The moment Kong stripped that tree to make a club I thought “ah ha, _that’s_ how he’ll be able to tackle Godzilla when they meet”. Even with a big size disadvantage, Kong is a tool user and probably quite clever. Totally stoked for the Kong vs. Godzilla meetup
Awesome review of my favorite Kong movie. So, is Rampage next? I can't think of many more monster movies if you're going through a timeline.
I really liked this movie. I just joined wish "the big bad guy" was more than just a big version of the pawns.

Kong Skull Island? Love it. And I liked the character Hank Marlow. I actually teared a bit when he returns back home
I was surprised how much I liked this film when I first watched it. Was further surprised how much more I enjoyed it on second viewing.
The best film thus far in the legendary universe by a pretty large margin, imo.
“It’s not high art…“
Uh oh. Here come the comments.
I think it's objectively the best Monsterverse movie. I still love KotM more tho
I totally agree it’s one of my favorite monster verse films Scratch that my favorite king Kong film it’s just so fun
Best movie: Godzilla 2014
Most enjoyable: KOTM
@@JRF1004 Fair enough

I was never a big fan of Kong, but this movie made me like him.
I'm really happy we got 2 king Kongs in the last 20 years. (3 if you count GvK). the 2005 kong is a love letter and pays homage to the original. 2017 kong is an absolute fun monster movie.
Yeah boy kong skull island. Finally it's not the same old story we've seen 3 time's it's something different. I can't wait for GvK in November
Gonna probably have to wait longer than that, regrettably. Coronavirus is going to completely screw up cinemas/film releases more and more.

I finally saw it months ago and I enjoyed it.
I think Samuel L. Jackson's character is the best written character in the movie and maybe in the monsterverse. He was great.
@Bobo Boy not really
I’m an outlier on this but is my favorite King Kong film to date. It has its flaws like every film does but this is the one I have the most fun watching time and time again. I’m excited to see Kongs future hopefully grow with the monsterverse.
I enjoyed this movie as well. Honestly, the 3 movies in this Monsterverse leading up to Godzilla vs. King Kong have been awesome and really has me excited for the upcoming movie. Really hoping the movies continue after Godzilla vs. Kong. Would love to see MechaGodzilla, MechaniKong and maybe Gamera in the future.
Peter Jackson have my favorite King Kong......but there is no deny, that the Monsterverse have the most BADASS KONG EVER.
Predictable, bad effects and CGI.
We all know which characters will die and that Kong will die.
A 5.5/10 at best.
Your talking about 2005 King Kong right? Because if you are I totally agree with you
@@Phoenix-zl5oo Yes, I prefer this Kong over Jackson's.

This is to me The 2nd Best King Kong movie ever made. Because it's the same story line, like the last two did (1976 & 2005). This one going back in the 70's right in the Vietnam War was ending. The Giant Monster fights are insane. Plus the Post Credit Ending Is one the best moments in this movie. Thanks for the Review.
My favorite Kong feature after the 1933 original.
To me, this is easily the best movie in the Monsterverse. Also, there's a reason that up to this point, it's the most successful Monsterverse movie; great action, several a-list actors that fans trust will make a good movie and that everyone recognizes, simple plot, great soundtrack and...monsters fighting each other during the day while using wider shots to frame the action better. Another thing I've only thought of recently is, it could be Kong that's capable of making these movies better. He's agile and mobile. Unlike Godzilla, Ghidorah, Methuselah, Behemoth etc, who just kind of lumber around, Kong acts like a WWE performer. His style against Godzilla's style has the potential to be jaw droppingly amazing. I'm psyched for November and as usual, great review.
That end credit scene had me acting uuuuuuuup
I didn't mind the dark/bad weather effects scenes from KOTM but I do love the daylight fights in this movie and hope we get some in Godzilla vs Kong as well.
I Didn't mind it either , because KOTM has Color to the shots like Pacific Rim.
I'm a tad late but I remember always wanting to see you review this film! This is by far my favourite film since it's arguably the best of the current 3 films in the monsterverse and I'm a die hard Kong fan. I also like how you played the 2005 King Kong game, that was my childhood. I remember playing it over and over many times. Loved the vid. I LOVE this film to bits, never gets old.
Love that movie! This and Gareth Edward's Godzilla from 2014 are probably my favorite monster movies of all time. I especially love the cinematography in this. Every single shot could be a frame or panel from a comic book.
Since I'm a Godzilla fan at heart, I went to see this movie SORELY because of the 20-second post-credits scene that teased KOTM. However, while watching it in theaters, I was extremely surprised by just how good it was. Kong, while not nearly as good as Godzilla (fight me), fit perfectly into the role of "tired protector who just wants to be left alone." There were some seriously amazing shots, like the aurora borealis and the helicopters approaching the storm. And the skullcrawlers are seriously terrifying. They're a good Kong villain, like the way Ghidorah is to Godzilla or Gyaos is to Gamera. The final battle was brutal and entertaining, and while the score is a bit mellow in cases, it still manages to hold up this surprisingly good movie.
Notice how I didn't say King Kong. I may have liked this one, but there's no stopping the true king.
One of my fav movies of the 2010's!
Excited for Godzilla vs King Kong?
This was a great movie and I did appreciate the fact it wasn't a rehash of the original. The Kong mythos has finally been expanded while not stepping too far from it's origins. I'll admit I was drawn to it hearing it was supposed to tie in with the Godzilla movies. But it does well to stand on it's own while teasing enough to make tie-in hunters happy. I cheered at the final moment of the stinger.
This became my second favorite Kong movie!
I think this was a very underrated monster movie. I’ll take it over Jackson’s bloated self important entry from 2007.
Fair. A 3 hour runtime is fine for a movie based on a 500 page novel, but not a movie about a giant monkey.
I need to rewatch this film. I saw it on the far side of the movie theatre, meaning everything was angled and looked weird
Awesome review!! I love Kong: Skull Island. It's such a fun and exciting movie. I love that it tried to be different from the other kong films and still be a fun monster movie. To me, it's the best of the MonsterVerse movies. I love that they showcase a lot of the monsters in daylight(which was one of my issues with 2014 with its really dark lighting and KOTM with the weathering effects), the characters are fun and the cinematography is really good. I hope Godzilla vs. Kong takes a lot of what made this film great into account.
Fantastic review ! I had a great time with this film!
At the time it was so refreshing too, contrasting how dreary Godzilla 2014 felt in comparison
Nice edit when mentioned Kong breaking his shackles
This is a very entertaining movie. One thing worth pointing out.... this "Kong" is not the same character as "King Kong".
King Kong died in 1933 in the original classic. This movie takes place in the early 70's.
This is a remake of the Japanese "Kong" character. The character from the "Showa" era of Kaiju films from Japan.
That's why this Kong is in the same "Shared Universe" as Godzilla, Mothra, Rodan and King Ghidorah.
“...made a splash with his independent coming of age film...” If I had a nickel for every time that happened...
Great review dude! Kong skull island was amazing!!
Kong: Skull Island is what I consider to be a guilty pleasure movie. Loads of fun on the surface, but not much going on beneath the action and visuals. King Kong (2005) is still my favorite Kong movie, but I have a lot of fun with this one, too!
Hands down, the best movie of the 3 Monsterverse films. No contest.
Since by now we've reached all three of the Monsterverse films and so far each of them by 4 stars, Here's hoping Godzilla vs Kong wraps it up with a similar score or even better from here. XD
Your reviews are excellent and you should proud of them.
This may be an unpopular opinion. But I liked skull island more than king of monsters, and I loved king of monsters. Infact I'll probably be rooting for kong in the new movie, not because he's stronger but because I just think monkey neat. Also he's clearly the underdog, and who doesn't love a king brave enough to fight a god. idk man skull island was just really cool.
Can you do a review on Rampage 2018 with Dwyane Johnson
Good review. There is probably no way to match the sheer astonishment I felt when I saw the 1933 original back in 1968, but 'Skull Island' was entertaining and I wasn't necessarily underwhelmed. In short, it works.
this's a FANTASTIC movie!
The Cinematography was Gorgeous in this film. I will also argue this is the best Monsterverse Film Overall. I love the Godzilla 2014 and G.K.O.T.M 2019, but as a full feature length movie, Kong: Skull Island hit all the correct marks and than some. Not to mention this movie has the Best Post-Credit Scene ever made in my creative opinion, absolute Chills with a great pay-off.
This is one of the best Kaiju movies I've seen in a very long time. While I've never been a huge fan of King Kong, unlike Godzilla or Gamera, I do love the idea of Kong how he's this near mythical creature who rules over Skull Island like a king. Kong as a King, big shock lol! But I do have a few meh moments, particularly with the island monster residents. I heard the director had request to create a wholly unique ecosystem instead of making it dinosaurs or prehistoric mammals. That's fine but personally I'd keep the dinosaurs like Peter Jackson's King Kong but make them evolve even further, say the V Rex is a decent of the Skullcrawlers and it had adapted to burrowing underground to evade Kong. Something like that or mix dinosaurs and prehistoric mammals together into a unique species. But that's just me, I still enjoyed the movie alot and I'm looking forward to Godzilla vs. Kong!!!! If the darn trailer ever comes out....
Junior high me was blown away seeing this in theaters
It’s about time we got here 😁
This in my opinion is one of the best Kong moving
Gotta say, Skull Island in the Peter Jackson remake was a lot more interesting. The monsters and the scenery was so much more interesting
I friggin love this movie! Definitely more than godzilla 2014 but a little less than king of the monsters. I have a lot of trouble deciding which rendition skull island I enjoy more, this one or peter jackstons. They just inspire so much awe and fear at once with a beautiful set of creatures.
Arguably the best movie in the monsterverse so far
I saw this in the dollar theater and i liked it as always the giant octopus monster is underused but i did get a kick of Nick Fury , Loki and Captain Marvel in this
and then the post credit scene happened and my hype for KOTM shot up ten fold, that was the most epic post credit tease i had ever seen even more then most of the MCU ones
You hit the nail on the head with this review. I am a fan of some of her RUclips‘s best movie critics and I understand where they’re coming from but to me it’s just not fair to compare Kaiju movies to The Godfather. In the monsterverse movies The last thing any of us hard-core fans want is them spending time flushing out every human character. I understand that the humans in Godzilla King of the monsters are really really dumb but I really don’t care. One movie critic who I respect very much and I am a big fan of his channel Starts his reviews of these movies stating how much she loved all the old Godzilla movies as a kid but then proceeds to rip apart everyone of these newer American movies for doing the exact same things those movies did. Of course the human story lines are silly and they don’t make any sense. Go look at the showa era of Godzilla movies. The humans are just there to give commentary. We are here to see the giant monsters. I don’t need these movies to have three dimensional human characters and realistic real world science. These movies are just supposed to be fun watching Giant monsters on a rampage and Kong skull Island is my second favorite King Kong movie of all time now.
Still a helluva good time watching this movie. I hope you're doing well & plan on making more videos sometime, Brandon!!
Where'd they get all those helicopters? There were like five on the ship and about 150 when they made it to the island.
I liked the final scene. It was genuinely heart-warming.
Haven't you heard? The boat was made of helicopters.
The director explained the helicopters was stored inside the shi. Watch the honest trailor
Kong Skull-Island was a better movie than both Legendary Godzilla films so far. Here's hoping more of Kong rubs off on Godzilla during GvK.
I really liked this movie and I had a blast in the movie theater
This movie has Steve Brule, nothing beats that.
So you doing the monster movies done by the guy that directed the Gamera trilogy next?
I like this over Peter Jackson’s version.
I absolutely love Skull Island, but I am curious as to what that original script would have been like
This channel is so great
Easily the best one in the Legendary franchise so far. Yes, better than KOTM.
You should get into the Ultraman series on this channel. Having been influenced by Godzilla, and having its start with the original Godzilla special effects director, the Ultraman series would fit perfectly as more monster goodness after coverage of Godzilla vs Kong is over.
I LOVE this movie. Very well done. Much better than 2014's "Waiting for Godzilla."
Watching this movie right now.
The one and only missed moment: After Kong rescued the antlered buffalo creature, and he looks at Brie Larson and walks away, they should have played 'American Woman' by The Guess Who.
Freaking love this movie
If Nick Fury, Loki, Walter, and Captain Marvel can't beat Kong, no one can!
The human leads were literally empty for me. I definitely felt like the first half was rushed as hell.
This is the Kong I grew up with
Peter Jackson Kong and Monsterverse Kong are the best adaptations of the story.
This is my favorite Kong style in that it's just a revamp of the 1962 one, which was my favorite growing up.
And as far as the movie goes, it's not perfect but I love the hell out of it and it's the best in the Monsterverse by far. A little disappointingly so because I wish the Godzilla movies were just as good if not better
John C Reilly was a nice stand-in for the late great Doug McClure ; )
People(That Time Forgot) would agree.
There are even katanas used in both films
Godzilla 2014 is still my favorite of the monsterverse films, but Kong is such a classic monster movie, we need more of that. Great looking film that really brought Skull Island alive! Too bad KOTM was so dark and muddy looking and brought down by a ridiculously overwrought plot, because the monster action in that was otherwise stellar...
@@alexyoutubechannel8175 Some of it was amazing, but other aspects have not held up for me on subsequent re-watches. Especially the human plot, which doesn't have to be great, but at least make it a bit interesting. Here it was rather nonsensical and frankly quite dull. And all of the fights were covered in rain and darkness. Great ideas are introduced but not really taken advantage of. Imagine how much better it would've been if we traveled to Atlantis for some background information on the titans, rather than all those exposition dumps in a control room! Anyway, it was still a fun movie, but I was hoping for a bit more...
"KOTM was so dark and muddy" 2014 was , not KOTM.
Kong skull island did something new with the character doesn't have to be a remake of the original we already see that would Jackson he did greater but yeah a difference I like it
I had to look through a few reviews to find a positive 😀
I am not a fan of action movies, but I watched this with my son and we both enjoyed it. I saw parallels between what happened on the island, and the history of the ww2 and the war in Vietnam.
I ww2 it was clear who enemy was, less clear in Vietnam. And the character from ww2 and Vietnam war acted out the same pattern on the island.
My favorite monstervese movie, i hope that they will make more kong movies.
Kong: Skull Island I find to be a great adaptation of King Kong for doing a lot different. Its clearly an action film, has a lot of style to it from editing & music, & how it crafted its story. It didnt try to do Kong again which is why 76 King Kong sucked and Peter Jackson already made King Kong again in his great expanded movie.
The problem with casting stars that are as big as the ones that they used is that no mere mortal celebrity could ever be as big as the Kaiju/Titans.
A Great Movie! This one caught me by surprise! SO far The Monsterverse is a Great Entertaining Movie Series!!
I have not seen it since it came out in the theater. I really enjoyed the movie. I am looking forward to him fighting Godzilla. Thanks for your review of this.
Have you reviewed the Peter Jackson version of King Kong?
This wasn't the "first movie to step out of the shadow of the original" - Son of Kong, King Kong Escapes and King Kong Lives all came before.
Yeah that’s true but I think it’s the the best king Kong movie that steps out of the shadows
great review
John C Riley’s character should have been the main character. I think if the film delved more into being a dark comedy (think castaway meets King Kong) would have made for a better monster flick.
