WB slam dunked me with copyright claims on this one.
They suplexed you
“Hey, this popular Godzilla youtuber is saying good things about our movie! COPYRIGHT STRIKE HIM!!!”
@@Korra228 They sure did.
God... Zilla forbid WB gets free Publicity negative or positive
@@boobootittleman7299 literally every Toho copyright strike on RUclips ever.
Godzilla suplexing Kong off the Great Pyramids was hilarious Showa-esque camp and I love it. Kong using Suko like a pair of nunchucks was also great.
Loved that bit
Where does this new fish get the idea of nunchucks instead of a flail
Yeah, this is kind of what I was thinking as well. As people critique the monsterverse as not being as serious as Shin Godilla or as Minus One.
The ending is something that sparked my heart. I’ve watched enough Kong films to know that this monke never gets a happy ending. So seeing this 91 year old icon gets this type of ending just puts a smile on my face.
It’s fun that in recent history, we’ve gotten a smart high quality movie, followed by a dumb fun movie. We get both flavors of Godzilla.
Missed opportunity to give Jia an unrelated yet identical twin found with the hollow earth iwi for the shobijin reference.
Imagine there being a prophecy that predicted to the Iwi that a twin from a far land would one day arrive, and together the unrelated twins could awaken Mothra
you know what that's exactly what I thought they were doing, where her twin down there was going to be the queen...... but................... NOPE! kerplop flush.
@@chancepaladin maybe the queen was her OLDER twin
They had a shobijin reference in King of The Monsters. So it doesn't surprise me they left that idea out. Though it would have been better in this film. lol.
I totally thought they were GOING to do this!
This one took the idea of a kid smashing his monster toys together and didnt just run away with it, it broke the damn landspeed record with it.
Its filled with so many little awesomes. The zero-g kaiju fight at the center of the earth mightve been the coolest thing ive ever seen in a monster movie, but then Godzilla curls up back in the Colosseum for a nap at the end and I just lost it.
S-rank.
have you seen the super inframan?
Feels like the good old days of Up From The Depths. This channel was so important to me for years. Glad too see some new videos! I really hope you’ll do Monarch: Legacy Of Monsters and Gamera: Rebirth! We are truly in a kaiju resurgence!
Minus One and GxK are two sides of the same coin imo. Everything I love about the franchise is present, whether serious or hilariously goofy
true
New Up From The Depths review, let's go!
It was just a blast to watch. Every Godzilla Era starts off serious then goes goofy fun. We are in goofy fun and I am here for it
My problem was I didn't get the feeling that were going for goofy and thought they were still trying to be serious.
If minus one was an artistic masterpiece id call this a masterpiece in entertainment. Me and my buddy had the theatre to ourselves and had a blast. First time in a while ive cheered multiple times in a movie over just simple childlike fun. My only wish is that they bring back the themes/mccrary on score
true
I really love how bonkers and crazy these films have gotten. Never thought I'd see Godzilla actually suplex Kong or Scar King throwing a whole ass building with a bone whip.
Both recent film have needed better music. I can't recall one track that stood out. Memorable music is key for monsters. KOTM had a awesome score, I'd like more of that.
With Wingard not returning to direct the next entry of the MV, theres a possibility that the score will be handled by someone else. That gives me hope for a better one at least.
Memorable music is fine but music doesn't need to rely on nostalgia to be memorable
kotm is just nostalgia bait with chanting everywhere as if that somehow makes it unique.
@@Kaiju-bm4ts True.
someone bring back the 2014 theme
I know many won’t agree with this, but this film was everything I wanted in a monster film. The action was awesome as hell, the story was fun, the monsters having character was cool, and it just truly delivered on everything. This ain’t my favorite of the MonsterVerse, of course not, but I don’t think it deserves the hate some have for it. Such a good film in my opinion.
Based
Act 3 of this movie my favorite 3rd act in anything besides Hot Fuzz. Best American Godzilla movie of all time. The hollow earth/brazil battle closest thing to how I felt as a kid watching Godzilla vs the sea monster on vhs
One thing I appreciated about this film was the human story. Not all the characters were spectacular, but they went on a proper adventure. Unlike GvK, the humans kept up with the monsters when it came to advancing the plot. I was genuinely interested to see what the humans were exploring as well as Kong. It reminds me of Godzilla vs the Sea Monster and Son of Godzilla where the humans were stuck on an island with monsters and as a kid, I wanted to see how they get out.
So far my favorite MonsterVerse movie.
nice seeing you around
little monkey was so goated in this movie went from laughing my ass off from kong using him as a weapon to genuinely being worried for his safety by the end of the film
the fact that he is the same size of kong (from skull island) is wild
@@tarzantabi7845omg I had no idea that's insane lmfao
I Agree with the 4 star rating.. It's definitely a Showa inspired film with a lot of heart.
Glad your back bro.I find your reviews spot on
Babe wake up, a new monsterverse review has come Up From The Depths!
Even if I like Minus One more, I am much more appreciative of GxK, mainly because it, alongside Dune 2 and Minus One, helped me finally enjoy movies again after the absolute misery of Thor Love And Thunder damaged the ability for me to enjoy a movie theatrically.
This was the best theatrical experience I’ve ever had and the most fun I’ve ever had with any piece of media since Godzilla King Of The Monsters five years ago. Throughout the movie, me and my brother’s inner child kept going absolutely nuts, and frankly, it’s a feeling I have sorely missed. I love this movie so much.
Also, happy 10th birthday to Godzilla 2014 and The Monsterverse as a whole
bassed
Its been a good few years to be a G fan. While minus 1 suprised me in how well a Godzilla story can be told, GxK just fuelled the inner child in me. Good review man 👍
GxK truly was the New Peakpire
GxK will age well as a gem among the Godzilla/Kong library of films.
An underrated Godzilla story with some of the best visual cues and battle moments in Godzilla history.
Perhaps the best Kong story ever told as he earns the title of King without the blatant dependency on humans for once.
It'll age very differently for different camps in the fandom. There will most likely always be a group that considers it bottom of the barrel and has fair arguments to back it up.
And I would say Kong was actually more dependent on humans than ever before. He was anchored by the toothache before Trapper bailed him out, and in mortal danger from the frostbite before the magic glove was brought in.
It would proopoably have the same reception the 70s film have, viewed as simple escapist fun and nothing more (even though GXK is more than that, but whatever)
@@tarzantabi7845 Eh, vs. Hedorah is definitely viewed more highly than that by a lot of people. Its message is still relevant today, and it's fascinating in that it's a very artistic, experimental movie. The Hedorah Final Form suit is fantastic, too.
And even if it had budget constraints, Terror of Mechagodzilla is widely respected for its compelling human story and effective use of a grim, somber tone that really stands out from the rest of the '70s entries.
This movie was a ton of fun. Great visuals too, the shot of the GKM trio is awesome and a great showcase of how far this franchise has come. One of the best Monsterverse films!
It's crazy that they actually did a better job at telling Kong's non-verbal story than what they did with the human characters. Just tells you what a strong character Kong is.
This is the second-best movie in the Monsterverse (KOTM 1st in my eyes!) While I'll admit its got flaws, I still enjoy this movie
This was such a blast. Easy to devour, simple fun. Loved it. Same with GvK.
This movie is a great achievement in visual storytelling.
Saw it three times in theaters. It just had a lot of heart and had consistent themes, excellent action sequences, actual funny moments, and great music.
EDIT: On that last point, I think the soundtrack is great. I love the motifs, and that track "Frozen Rio" is so emotional and epic.
Great to hear your voice in a review again!
I got some ideas for new videos. Rank all designs for Godzilla and maybe do reviews on various kaiju video games. Plus, your Bryan Cranston video opened the gates for more what if rewrites.
It will never cease to crack me up hearing a human defend Godzilla in these movies. Bro literally did what the MUTOS did in the first movie in New Empire.
Yes but the Mutos wanted to reproduce and their offspring would run rampant all over the world and Godzilla only wanted to stop Skar King and the apes.
That’s awesome, I just recently binged all your videos and was wondering when you’d drop this one. 🔥
Great spot on review man! Describing it as a modern big budget showa film is perfect and I really hope the monsterverse continues for many years to come
Welcome back! Glad to watch your reviews again 😄. God bless!
We Kaiju fans have been eating so good lately🔥🔥 Has UFTD covered Gamera: Rebirth yet? Criminally underrated series
its alright, but I won't call the series underrated
I’m glad Adam Wingard isn’t returning for the next movie. He didn’t handle Godzilla’s character as well as Gareth Edwards or even Dougherty.
Godzilla has felt like an angry, raging afterthought in the last two movies, despite his name being first in both titles.
These so called "movies" are worse than any other bad toons..
that is because GvK and GXK are both Kong movies that happen to have godzilla in them, rather than godzilla and kong movies.
and I dont mind that (not only because I like the big monkey) but also because for the first time Kong is able to participate in his own series that tells its own stories (unlike most films in the past which were just remakes of the 1933 film)
@@andreichivu7653 dude what were you expecting from a movie called godzilla x kong? citizen Kane?
@@andreichivu7653 Why "movies" in quotation marks?
The thing that really helps sell this movie as the best thing to come out of The Monsterverse yet is the progress to it. Look at how the scope, tone, action, technology and primary Monsters have come since 2014. I don't know how intentional it was, but the makers were VERY sure to be carefull with what they did in each installment.
The only thing I wish hadn't disappeared was when you saw the aftermath of the destructive battles and how people were hurt and/or killed because that was one of the things that made the Godzilla 2014 film stand out among others before it. This makes me really hate when Rebecca Hall tells a Monarch worker informing her that people are wanting Godzilla held responsible for his crimes to just basically just let them continue complaining as if it mattered.
I’m glad u enjoyed this film , I saw it 4 times in theaters and enjoyed it immensely, and when I could pre order it , I didn’t hesitate.
Always great to see you upload :)
the mom audibly called out for gia once. was literally waiting for it to happen.
F E A R S O M E G O D Z I L L A H A S E V O L V E D
Bernie definitely had the laugh out loud moments. Kong, Gia and Scar King were interesting characters, especially Kong. But that climax was so rushed feeling, with both the humans and monsters. I'm really surprised you thought Godzilla had enough presence. Spoiler warning, most of the movie he's asleep. He charges up his atomic breath at the end, making you think he'd at least finish off Scar King. But Kong does and Godzilla just shoots it up in the sky lol. Even his battle with the ice dragon thing lasts about 15 seconds. Shame KOTM underperformed because imo it's the best of the five Godzilla related Hollywood movies, not saying it doesn't have flaws. Avengers: Endgame was still killing it in theaters and taking up so much publicity and promotion.
I appreciated that this film leaned into the campy/corny nature of the showa era films. I really enjoyed it. I expected it to be wild fun, and got just that. This was only a few months after watching Minus One which is probably my favorite Godzilla movie to day as a life-long Godzilla fan.
Kong giving Shimo a pet rub on the chin at the end gave this film so much heart. Kong is now King
Totally agree. It's one of those movies that you would consider to be bad, but really has no glaring issues. It's just a fun ride. Love it.
I just wanna know why the titans didn’t feel… titanic in this movie…
This movie is under the perspective of Titans. Movies like G14 under human perspective is and that’s why they felt big.
maybe because the camera shoots them from a different angle (up front rather than down under)
also the animators clearly didn't care about the laws of physics (which I dont mind, If you are going to make a silly monster movie, you better embrace the silliness
I love ALL these movies. Don't care about "financial disappointments". As long as they're made, I'm watching!
My biggest gripe with the movie was how they handled Jia. Nothing wrong with the character or the actress, she did a fine job but they sort of made her into a 'Girl who's the key to everything'. It would of made more sense, and I was hoping they would add her twin down in Hollow Earth and they both awaken Mosura like the movies of old. Not only would it make more sense, but also provide Jia a connection with Hollow Earth's natives while staying with the science lady (I forget her name). Minor gripe, I wasn't keen on how Mosura sounded in the movie. But over all I had fun with the movie. It was Kong's journey through and through and I was glad to see him have a happy ending.
true, but that is kind of new cliche revolving around little girls or boys in every modern day blockbuster. they will always be used as macguffins rather than characters (doctor strange multiverse of madness, and the creator did similar things)
This movie had a lot of issues, but it was cool to see Kong finally get a true rival of his own in the form of Skar King.
Skar King feels like the kind of Villain Kong needs: One who rules and oppresses through fear and pain, and not raw strength.
Excellent review! I love this movie. I love the concentration on the monsters, and the people were likeable. Not in it that much but funny and heartfelt. Would like more Godzilla next time but he was awesome every moment he was in this. I love where he sleeps too. I wish they would wait until Adam Wingard could do 3. Hopefully he can come back for 4
Nice to hear what you had to say on this film. I enjoyed what the movie had to offer and I hope to see you have reviews on some recent kaiju media later on.
Sometimes, simple works best, I'll take any jank from a Kaiju flick as long as it delivers the goods, and doesn't bastardize my Monster Kings.
It's not my preferred tone for Godzilla but I can accept a big budget rendition of the Showa era. I'm glad that at least more people are calling attention to how bad Tom Holkenborg's music for the monsterverse has been.
its not necessarily bad, its decent music on its own right. the problem is that it follows the generic Hollywood stable, of making sure the music plays second fiddle to the spectacle, which is why they always have the most generic scores imaginable, it happens with almost every blockbuster these days (Dune 2 is one of the few exceptions)
MY KING MY LORD OF CONTENT
Glad to see these reviews back, I hope we get to see the singular point video eventually even if there probably isn't demand for it anymore
I loved this thing, the soundtrack felt like the only piece that wasn't up to the same level as everything else otherwise I'd even say it's a perfect movie. It's so sad that they will rush he next movie without the director who did such a great job with 2 of them. Wingard "gets it", he knows what makes this stuff fun and is competent at doing it which is hard to find in Hollywood.
Dan Stevens absolutely fking steals this movie
LEGIONNNNNNNNNNNN!
Well here we are
Didn't like the previously film so I was cautious, but this one blew me away. I didn't want to like it but I loved it!
I assume we're keeping her quiet because it's a big reveal but I genuinely cried when she returned
My two biggest problems are that Skar King died too, soon he needed at least one more fight where we see the true potential of his lanky kong fighting style as someone more thin and agile than Kong. The "false king" angle of his character should not make him pathetic and too reliant on his crystal, his patheticness comes from his tyranny and lack of morals not lack of strength.
Godzilla needed more characterization, he felt a bit more thoughtful and nuanced in the previous two films even when being swift and aggressive. Though i do think it was the right move to have him immediately attack kong again!
If there was one thing I had to complain about the movie that it didn’t give a post-credit-ending. It would be nice if they give us glimpse of what’s gonna come next for the monsters? But all in all still is worth having fun with it. I’ll give the new transformation on Godzilla credit. It does look pretty intimidating but one day do please go back to the blue.
it had something to do with this being planned as the last film, Warner brothers were struggling financially after most of their big films flopped last year. so they anticipated this to be like this franchises last straw.
if the film flopped the Mv would end, if it became a hit they would continue it. and since the film became a success they decided to continue the series.
that is why the film had a pretty conclusive ending and no post credit scene, because Warner bros didn't know if the film was going to be the last in the franchise or not.
I hope the next movie is named 'KING KONG MINUS ONE GODZILLA' and they keep fighting for whatever reason, lmao.
I have a lot of problems with GvK, GxK fixes some of those problems. I enjoyed it, the character development of Kong has been the heart of the Monsterverse and they delivered in a major way gain. I just hope Godzilla gets some of that same development in future installments.
This is my favorite Monster verse film behind KOTM.
I love GvK and but it did focus a little too much on human characters especially with that side plot with Millie Bobby Brown and it made it kinda drag at points.
GxK goes all in on the Kaiju action and it did a better job at keeping me engaged the whole way through. Wish it was a little longer though.
The film is GODZILLA x Kong. Godzilla has star billing. What I found about this film is that the Americans were strongly pushing Kong rather than Godzilla. For me making Godzilla nothing but a "sleepy puddytat" in his bed was demeaning to who Godzilla is. On the heels of "Godzilla Minus One," I was hoping for something more. What I got was nothing more than a Marvel-esque battle that had little to do with what makes Kaijus fearful. The only thing that I was at all happy with was the continued relationship between Kong and Jia. That is still the best part of this universe. Thank the gods there was no more Madison Russell. I don't think I could have taken more of Millie Bobbie Brown. Though why did we have to suffer more of Bernie? Oh god help us. I'll still take "Godzilla Minus One" over this schlockfest. Thank goodness Toho hired Takeshi Yamazaki.
I agree that Kong and Jia's bond is the best part of this universe.
Agree, sad how bad it turned out.
I didnt find it demeaning. it was funny that godzilla slept in the coliseum. He was an absolute menace and threw hands with everyone
I agree with you 100% glad they got a new director for the next project
The fuck is "Marvel-esque" about it?
Not all monster movies are meant to be fearful, especially in this universe.
This is a great review.
“…a sequel was quickly greenlit with Adam Wingard returning to direct, the first director of the Monsterverse to do so, signaling that this cinematic universe finally had a solid sense of direction…”
Sure felt that way for a minute there. *sigh*
love your videos and perspective! hopefully you get another chance soon to give your take
up from depths up from the depths
First American Godzilla I have enjoyed!
I don't why, but I just couldn't get into this movie like Godzilla vs Kong. Maybe I'm desensitized to the action at this point.
Godzilla suplexing Kong off the pyramids of Giza had my whole theater cheering
Whoever the new director will be they better make a great follow up cause this movie is amazing 🤩🔥🔥🔥🦖🦍🦋
I hope its Guillermo del toro
I find funny that I find this and Godzilla the best films in the Monsterverse despite being polar opposites
The only major criticism I have with this movie is that the final fight didn't really wow me. The floating is cool and then destroying Rio is a bit of fun globe hopping, but there just isn't enough space for the monsters to share frames on the screen. We get one monster filling up the frame and they attack another monster just offscreen, and then we cut to that one monster being hit. I needed more wide shots that gave me a better sense of the geography of the fights just so that I could better follow along. I'm sure that it's really cool when you look at it from a CG artist's perspective where you can get a top down view of everything, but something happened where this digital camera you can place anywhere in this fake world is just not placed in the right spots to get the best views of what's happening. The already flimsy plot was a given going into the movie, but when the final fight failed to blow me back, I left the theater disappointed because the fights in Godzilla vs. Kong were phenomenal and I never felt lost once. The movie does a great job showing interactions between monsters up until the finale, and then it just all kind of fell apart for me, I don't get it.
This movie is just made for giant monster lovers and I like it.
Godzilla hs basically become the “American Ninja” or “Airwolf” of the films… hes the thing that comes in and kicks the crap out of everyone when the decisive battle is at hand…
The excessively longer arms on G are awkward looking despite the fact they did a somewhat solid job of hiding them in the framing
I’ve commented this in a separate reaction video but I’ll elaborate it here.
I love how it seems like Godzilla actively doesn't want to be here. He spends the whole movie getting stronger so he can end the fight as soon as possible and go back to bed. He HATES Kong and all the wacky adventures he goes on, and is guilt-tripped by Mothra into helping him. He's an unwilling participant in his own movie and its kinda hilarious.
That look he gives Kong at the end after Kong smirks at him is, “If it wasn’t for Mothra, I’d have left you for dead with a smile on my face. I had to beat on 3 women today (Scylla, Tiamat, Shimu), and being associated with you has been my lowest moment”
true, Godzilla must have been a massive Andrew Tate fan
The score SUUUUUUUUUUCKS.
We need that 2019 Godzilla KOM score!
I liked this movie the first time i saw it. Although, i may have overhyped myself too much. I came out of the theaters confused about how much i liked it. Then i watched it a 2nd time. Then a 3rd. A 4th. 5th. 6th. 7th........it just got better and better the more I watched. The little details i missed.
Also, if this movie had a Bear McCreary score.........my Godzilla
I've jokingly said Godzilla is the Goku of this story. He spends most of the movie training/powering up and then he's a main part in the final battle.
I'd love to see you review Monarch
I agree with a lot of your views. I watched this opening day and walked away thinking, "That could have been 20 minutes shorter, and the human cast should have been cut down farther. " *sips on her GxK cup and eats out of her GxK popcorn tin.*
Kong's story was so heartfelt. It was drawn out in places (hence the 20 minutes shorter), but it is an excellent setup for another movie.
Godzilla's pink form is just 😚💋🤌🏿.
I do want to watch it again to see if my heart changes about the main human cast. Unfortunately, I've personally never bought the chemistry between Jia and Ilene. Something is cold about it.
And Bernie? Godzilla Allmighty, did he annoy me!
I hope the next movie is more serious like Goji 2014 and that the human cast is better utilized.
One complaint about the Monsterverse: I feel they're just too big. When the cities and skyscrapers and such just become sandbox toys I feel everything just loses a sense of scale that actually makes the destruction more intense.
That's another thing Minus One did really well, Godzilla's size. Huge and scary but not so big it's subconsciously unrelatable.
The great thing about the franchise is there's room for every interpretation, of course.
Seeing in at Toho Cinemas in Shinjuku opening weekend was like a childhood dream come true.
Marvelousness
I really enjoyed this one after being let-down by a second watch of GvK
Whilst King of the Monsters is still my personal favourite of the Monsterverse, I do think this movie does a lot of things better than it. And this probably represents my favourite characterization of Godzilla in the more fun, popcorn level movies, I like when Big G is the jerk-ass who does the right thing, and GxK is unapologetic about it, really hope they keep this characterization going forward.
Not the biggest Kong fan but I really like him in this movie, very reminiscent of Kratos in the later God of War games (For obvious reasons)
Sometimes you want to see Godzilla in a serious and emotional story, and sometimes you just want to see him blow shit up and suplex giant apes off the tops of pyramids.
Yes.
COPYRIGHT CLAIM BY WARNER BROS.😢
For me, this film is my least favorite out of the Legedary films and its mostly becuase of the human characters. In fact, my favorite human characters are the ones that don't talk at all!
And, somehow, Mothra returned. I know Mothra reincarnates through her offspring but she just comes out of nowhere here, even though her offspring was hinted at at the end credits in KotM.
I agree with the mothra thing.
Oh hey, another review. Glad to see content pumped back into the channel.
So, that is pretty much my opinion on the movie. It was endearing for moments but troblesome in others. I did like characters given to both monsters and how the attention on them and still be understandable for audiences. The whole Skar King and Kong sequence, Godzilla and Kong at Egypt and Kong and Suko bonding are the highlights of the movie IMO. The human characters were ok IMO, it was fine that we got only a few instead of so many and having trouble on who to give the attention.
The music was straight up awful. None of it was good except maybe the main title theme.
"A solid sense of direction . . ."
Wingard will not be directing the next installment.
I hope it isn't too much trouble to ask, but do you intend on making a review for Godzilla SP at least some time in the future? Not many people have talked about it as much as the Anime Trilogy and it would be interesting to hear your thoughts on it.
You don't have to if you don't want to though. I know that not all of your time is dedicated to videos.
it might have something to do with the whole copyright thing (which as we all know Toho hates to see people reviewing their stuff)
but I agree, it would be fun to see him review singular point
I agree with you about the human cast as well. I think if they would’ve just had one team of humans in the last movie instead of “team Godzilla.” And “ team Kong “, I think the audience and critics would like it even more than they do. When you’re writing down the pros and cons of Godzilla versus Kong one of the cons are the human characters. Team Godzilla, as much as I do like these characters was really pointless. They could’ve had a water pipe break open and spill on the computer at the end and it would’ve been the same thing. They’re just really wasn’t a lot for team Godzilla to do. And it’s not the actors fault and like I said, I do like the characters, but team Kong can actually communicate with him. Team, Godzilla just has to follow him from a distance and that’s it.
That’s what I loved about this movie is actually made up a new team made up of members of both teams from the last movie. I think that made the humans and their purpose mean 10 times more.
Not sure how I feel about this one. Definitely gonna need to watch it again.
I just sincerely wish we hadn't lost the sense of scale, o loooooove the showa era but I don't miss it that much, it would've felt awesome to be afraid of scar king for real
I hope we get to see a Monarch Legacy of Monsters and Netflix Skull Island series
King of the monsters is my favorite. I hope we see Godzilla really have his back to the wall again. He was a bit over powered here….
