@@observerf-03p.d39 Shin Kamen rider too. It appears he, Higuchi, and hopefully Sagisu are doing a salute to traditional tokuatsu. Let's hope Gamera gets his redemption here.
I'm afraid I must agree with you. Godzilla (1954) was a groundbreaking tokusatsu with a daring script. But it was edited in a way that disrupted the tone of some scenes. That doesn't make it a bad movie, just a product of its times. Ishiro Honda was only 5 years into his career. The French New Wave would not begin for several years. And the James Bond franchise, which influenced both Japanese media and Hideaki Anno, would not release a movie for eight more years. There is nothing wrong with saying that Shin Godzilla surpasses Godzilla in several ways -- as long as that person respects how important the movie was for changing cinema in Japan and abroad.
Char Aznable Yeah, because dickheads like Gojira5400. He just hates on Shin Godzilla because it’s not directed towards the American audience. He just wants Kaiju battles, which is not what Godzilla was and considers Shin a bastardized version of Godzilla and how Legendary Godzilla is perfect.
@Char Aznable I simply do not agree. It will be remembered, I believe, as one of the high-water marks of the franchise. Along with the likes of 1954's _Gojira_ and 1984's _Return of Godzilla,_ and possibly/probably _Mothra vs. Godzilla,_ _Godzilla vs. Biollante, _GMK,_ and perhaps a few others.z Related, I really, really like 2016's American _Godzilla_ and _love_ 2019's _King of the Monsters,_ and I don't doubt that they will be well remembered as well, but more of being generally well received American adaptations rather than for their inert quality. Conversely, I didn't really like the anime trilogy all that much, but I suspect that they will be talked about due to, if nothing else, their highly experimental nature.
Shin Godzilla sure is a great watch, no matter how many times this guy changes, he will ALWAYS have his nuclear origins and his inspiration from the war and what not!
Also, whoever it was that posted the full movie on RUclips back in like November deserves a frickin medal. That actually helped me through a pretty rough time, so it was particularly good for me.
I was super happy to see Shin Godzilla on the big screen. Hell super happy to have Godzilla movies from either side of the Pacific. My only complaint with the film is that Godzilla sleeps just a little too long before the finale. I actually kind of wanted to learn more about these characters. Supposedly an early draft had a romance in it and I can't help but wonder if it was between Rando and Patterson or Rando and Ogashira or what. Speaking of Ogashira I wished she had a few more scenes.
Got to see it in theater too and mostly agree with you. Personally super happy that the romance subplot was cut, the remnants of it could still be felt and they detracted from the film's thesis of 'How would the government actually respond?' Besides, if you're after a romance, I think every other Godzilla movie has you covered.
@@Captain1nsaneo Huh you felt elements of it? Which characters then? As for Godzilla movies doing romance eh I dunno about that. They seem to keep it very in the back and subdued. My point was more for once I was interested in these characters I kind of wanted to learn more of them. I am glad it was cut too but I am just sorta curious.
@@Irrelevant402 It's been a while so forgive me if I use roles instead of names. There's an Asuka/Rei dynamic going on with the US diplomat and the woman member of the main character's inner circle. This is all from my id so I'm prepared to be wrong but they had the most speaking time of the female main cast and were often framed with the protagonist. The playful nature of the diplomat felt like it bordered on flirting and their separation at the end was filmed in a way to imply a denied longing. I would have liked more time with the characters too, I enjoyed their interactions.
"Who Will Know" was such a great piece of music to use alongside Godzilla's breath... I might have teared up a little watching it. Additionally, the lyrics for "Who Will Know" are incredibly sad since they are the world from Shin's perspective...
Legendary Godzilla is the coolest and Aw-inducing Godzilla we got Shin Godzilla is the most unsettling, grotesque, and deeply disturbing Godzilla we got
The Godzilla film I've been waiting countless years for, one that goes back to it's roots while being an updated version, it's everything I had hoped the 2014 movie would've been, but ultimately wasn't. While not without it's flaws Shin Godzilla is easily one of the best Godzilla films ever if you prefer the character being the menace he was initially intended to be, as opposed to being an anti hero which the majority of Godzilla movies are. Godzilla 54, Godzilla 85, and Shin Godzilla are my top three Godzilla films, followed by Godzilla vs. Biollante which remains my favorite movie where Godzilla fights another monster.
This movie, along with Gojira 1954, GMK, Godzilla vs Biollante, Godzilla 2014, is on my top 5 favorite Godzilla movies. I love this version of Godzilla, his evolutionary concept, design, and him being a literal abomination against humanity was fresh and interesting and I bought into all of that. This is also one of the most well directed Godzilla movies i've seen, it was very good shots of Godzilla, the effects are very well done and the tone that this film was going for worked. All of which couldn't have been better without Hideaki Anno. Also find it ironic that this movie, with a 15 million dollar budget, has better cgi and practical effects than most big budget Hollywood blockbusters. I give this movie a 8.3/10.
They (toho) are not allowed to make a japanese godzilla until Legendary releases the third legendary godzilla movie arround 2021, if we have luck. Or so i've read. It's a contract thingy.

Still find it incredible that Toho's Godzilla, the one with the lower budget, looks far more convincing than the 2014 version. I think that comes down to it's use of miniatures and it being animated like a suit actor, but still great stuff
I'm so obsessed with Shin and I can't stop looking up stuff about it. I work at a collectible store and we make our playlist and I put "Who will know" and I just sing it all day. I need help

kyles Rudolph Ilardenovich They didn’t cancel any of the sequels. Shin Godzilla was always intended to be a standalone film. Can’t cancel something if it was never confirmed to begin with.
Something else I love about Shin is the slow plodding pace of G. Intentional or not, his slow but deliberate walk of destruction through the city is so much like radiation. Only containable with heroic coordinated efforts of people. But even then their sacrifice only buys us time.
Another amazing review. I couldn't agree more Shin Godzilla is my favorite in the entire series. It's a stunning, master class film. Of course, as I'm writing this we have about 2 weeks until the title bout with King of the Monsters - we'll see! Thanks for doing such great work with you channel.
I lost my shit when I saw Godzilla's beam color looking purple. Even more when it shot beans off his back. The song "percussion of the masses" makes me tear up a bit even to this day at how majestic it is.
I’ll never forget seeing the first use of the atomic breath on a big ass Imax screen and just being left speechless. An absolutely unforgettable experience.
I absolutely love Shin Godzilla and I've been watching Godzilla/Gamera movies since I was little. I don't equate Shin Godzilla as the Godzilla we all know and love. It's a different Kaiju. But you described the movies exactly how I feel about it. The special effects, the acting, the characterizations, the plot, and the music were all done extremely well. One of the top movies of all time (regardless of genre). Now, if only they would have explained the tail at the end a bit more .... left it wide open for further story lines, but left us hanging ....
I was a bit on the fence at first, but the scenes when they start to attack Godzilla were great, and his response to the Stealth attack was fantastic. I realized my mouth was open when Godzilla unleashed the breath weapons. Fantastic
I was sitting in the theater having the feeling of dread, while watching this movie .The unblinking eye,the devastation , and the total ineptitude by the govt. to do something. it really echoed what is going on in our world today .
There's always that moment, in Godzilla film where Godzilla does something to the military to tell the audience that the military can't beat him. Shin Godzilla is the first time, where, when that scene happened I thought to myself, "this....is not a solvable problem." It's horrifying, and god is it damn fantastic. I hope we get a sequel
I remember my brother bought tickets fir the 2 of us to see Shin in theaters. Was an amazing experience and the fans around us were true. Since the film was only in theaters around us for 2 weeks, the place was packed. I agree 100% with your review, also i have the same book as you the Godzilla Compendium. Grew up reading it throughout middle school and so on. Nice to know a true fan is making these amazing reviews and can't wait for the future films reviews.
Proof that godzilla movies could be deep. Also you made a mistake about this godzilla, check out the song "who will know" which plays in the first atomic breath scene. It proves that this godzilla DOES have a conscience and is confused by what is going on with what is happening to his body.
Despite its limited theatrical release in the U.S. I managed to see this movie 5 Times in theaters, that is how much I enjoyed this movie, to this day Shin Gojira remains my 2nd favorite Godzilla film after Gojira(1954). This movie represents everything that's Gojira(1954) stood for while also trying some new & creative ideas that work perfectly for this film. I'll never forget seeing the trailers for this movie and instantly saying, "Oh my God!!! Godzilla looks terrifying!!!", and seeing the film opening night when Godzilla reappears in his 4th form & hearing the Godzilla themes straight from King Kong vs Godzilla & Terror of Mechagodzilla a grin never left my face, that & I was completely mind blown seeing Godzilla's new Atomic Breath on the big screen. Anno & Higuchi are clearly huge fans of the franchise & they certainly did Godzilla justice, & yes I am definitely looking forward to Shin Ultraman.
Definitely the best Godzilla film in the 2014-Present Era. But then, King of the Monsters isn’t out yet... I love this version of Godzilla. From his perspective, he’s just an innocent creature, lost and confused. But from the perspective of the humans, he’s an unstoppable force of destruction, with nothing to stand in the way of him ravaging the entire country of Japan single-handedly. He has a presence of pure fear, and I love it. First time I’ve been scared of Godzilla since the original film. The music here is another highlight. Using the old Ifukube tracks is great, but the original tracks used in the film are amazing. Tracks like Persecution of the Masses, Defeat Is No Option, and Who Will Know all have a haunting feeling that further cements the fear you feel when Godzilla is onscreen.
I mean Earth Godzilla is MASSIVE but I think the 2014 Godzilla looks really good too EDIT: A shit he meant the movies, my bad dude I thought he meant the look of the Shin Godzilla compared to the others XD
You should watch the very first one, specifically the non-edited to upset western audiences original version. It's quite deferent from pretty much every other movie in the series.
Something I loved from this is that almost all the USA reviewers went "This film feels anti-american. No kidding even the guys at kotaku said something like that. What you think the world is kissing USA's ass in real life like in American movies? xD
It feels anti-American because the depiction of any American character or viewpoint is painted in broad, one-dimensional villain colors. Even Kayoco is only redeemed when she rejects her American upbringing and "becomes Japanese". The moment that the American scientists slip out of the collaborative effort because they got the information they wanted was the point the filmmakers fully committed to Cannon Films level "foreigners are bad and can't be trusted". The satire that works so well in the rest of film thuds because its presentation of the Japan-American relationship completely lacks any thoughtfulness and humanity, and it borders on the kind of ugly ethnic nationalism that much of the world is embroiled in now, especially the United States (which is extremely anti-science, which shows just how wrongheaded Shin Godzilla is about its take, made before Trump won the election). It felt utterly out-of-place in an otherwise amazingly biting and horrifying film.
I love what you said about this film being an "aspiration" by a Japanese filmmaker - too often the West (esp film twitter and film youtube) likes to dismiss anything appearing nationalistic coming out of non-Western countries as "propaganda" - but this film isn't afraid to mock or criticize what it saw as Japan's failures...it just hopes that the next generation might learn from those painful mistakes...a far cry from the acclaimed American godzilla in which FEMA is super efficient and American special forces are everywhere all at once and can kill the monsters good.
This movie rock's big time interesting characters, great action , great writing/commentary on Japan government and godzilla feels like a national disaster then ever before and I love it.
Thanks for giving this film justice. It deserves much more praise and love than the rest of the other movies. This and 1954 are the top movies. Both equally matched. I had the honor to see it in theater here in puerto rico and let me tell you. I will never ever forget that day.
I haven't watched all the Godzilla films but out of all which I have watched, this one is definitely my favorite! Godzilla's design in this movie is also my favorite design because of how creepy and unsettling it is.
Excellent review. I wasn't a Godzilla fan until I watched this movie. At 04:02. That exact moment is the perfect showcase for the good acting in this movie. I actually watched it last night and at that moment when they discuss the possibility of dropping nuclear bombs on Japan again and he reacts like that I went like "Ohhhhh, good acting!".
I just saw this film for the first time today and loved it! It did remind me so much of the original Gojira, just as you said. And the human part of it was well written enough that I didn't get too impatient like I do with some of the Godzilla/kaiju films. I also liked the odd design and new abilities. Why not update him a bit? Anyone who hasn't seen it should spend the $3-4 and rent it on amazon.
When I saw Shin Godzilla in the theaters, I left with some mixed emotions but the film stayed with me. It's one of those movies that you need to watch a few times to really take it all in and now I absolutely love the movie.
I don't care what anyone says, Shin Godzilla is my favorite Godzilla movie, It's feels refreshing to get something new, but familiar in the franchise, we hardly ever get to see Godzilla as a serious figure in a movie, and it has something important to say, about America and Japan, and instead of the movie being dragged out by heavy dialogue just to get the plot going, even though this movie has a lot of talking, it's there for a reason, everything was put in for a reason in this film. There's just a lot to love about this film. The Design of Godzilla, his abilities, the story, his evolutions,THE MUSIC! it's all great! However it does get over whelming at times, due to things happening a lot, theres not enough music, and yes the talking, there's a lot of it, and I can see why this movie isn't big on the main stream in America, yet I do see why it is in Japan when it came out.
Alex youtube channel look if you like Giant monster brawls and nothing more, than that’s fine, but I like to have more than just icing, I want the cake. Godzilla deserves to be more than just giant monsters fighting, the Big-G Needs better characters and story if it’s ever going to hit the kind of main stream the Avengers movies have.
I knew King of The Monsters wouldn't have a chance competing with this film, I was unfortunately right. Shin-Godzilla is the reminder that Godzilla from the very beginning has been a symbol of destruction, the horror created by mankind. I love this film because it's about Japan vs Godzilla in the best way possible since the original film, America will always see Godzilla as the hero and Japan, even though they created the monster fighting element, will always remember that Godzilla was the harbinger of death and destruction.
Shin Godzilla is my favorite entry in the series, even surpassing the original. All my favorite Godzilla movies are the ones where he is unequivocally the villain, and the way this Godzilla is essentially a cold, brainless mass of destruction with power unseen in the series at the point of release, it's truly terrifying. I am scared of Shin Godzilla, and that in and of itself makes it the best interpretation bar none.
I think the final form of shin goji is a literal modern version of what they were going for in 1954. Down to the skin which was meant to look like radiation burns. I just wish he was a little more dynamic and not so wooden
They made their own godzilla all over again so it would not have to do with any of the other godzilla and use what they wanted to do with godzilla to do it their way to start with their own godzilla to come up with new ideas of their own godzilla to make it better and do things that know other godzilla can do but this godzilla to make it easier to make more movies to come up with something new each time

There is nothing wrong with saying that Shin Godzilla surpasses Godzilla in several ways -- as long as that person respects how important the movie was for changing cinema in Japan and abroad.
@Char Aznable it will be in Japan because of what it represented for them.
Biollante, _GMK,_ and perhaps a few others.z
Related, I really, really like 2016's American _Godzilla_ and _love_ 2019's _King of the Monsters,_ and I don't doubt that they will be well remembered as well, but more of being generally well received American adaptations rather than for their inert quality.
Conversely, I didn't really like the anime trilogy all that much, but I suspect that they will be talked about due to, if nothing else, their highly experimental nature.

Shin Godzilla : OUR GODZILLA IS BACK!
I heart Ogashira

Yes I love this song. It is so sad and sorrowfull. I cant even beginn to describe how much i love Shin Godzilla and this song.
A masterpiece and truly a faithful sucessor to the 1954 Gojira.
Great review as always :)
@@alexyoutubechannel8175 2014 and 2019 are different movies from Shin
Legendary Godzilla is the coolest and Aw-inducing Godzilla we got
Shin Godzilla is the most unsettling, grotesque, and deeply disturbing Godzilla we got
Amazing Film I Wish we got a sequel instead of the anime trilogy.
Anno wasn't coming back, and just intended to make a standalone film with no need for a sequel.
He needs to finish Evangelion anyway
They (toho) are not allowed to make a japanese godzilla until Legendary releases the third legendary godzilla movie arround 2021, if we have luck. Or so i've read. It's a contract thingy.
@@emanueloliveira7997 Apparently instead of a direct follow up Toho is planing a CU for thier monsters =( I really would love to see a follow up to Shin Godzilla though.
@@nadtz CU?
Still find it incredible that Toho's Godzilla, the one with the lower budget, looks far more convincing than the 2014 version. I think that comes down to it's use of miniatures and it being animated like a suit actor, but still great stuff
I'm so obsessed with Shin and I can't stop looking up stuff about it. I work at a collectible store and we make our playlist and I put "Who will know" and I just sing it all day. I need help
I can relate. Such an amazing song. I know it by heart.
Couldn't agree more. And your comment about it being rewatchable is so true. Hell, I’ve even rewatched your longer review of the film three times. Shin Godzilla is just that good.
I'm happy to be part of the side that welcomed this Godzilla along with Legendary's take and was just happy to get more Godzilla movies.

Something else I love about Shin is the slow plodding pace of G. Intentional or not, his slow but deliberate walk of destruction through the city is so much like radiation. Only containable with heroic coordinated efforts of people. But even then their sacrifice only buys us time.
not only is it a great Godzilla film, but it's a great sci-fi film in general.
It's persecution of the masses I think
@Katie Lewis Different song
One of my absolute favorites in the franchise. It could maybe lose about 5 minutes from the 2nd half of the film, but it is nearly perfect.
My heart pumps when Up from the Depths comes up in my sub feed.
I was a bit on the fence at first, but the scenes when they start to attack Godzilla were great, and his response to the Stealth attack was fantastic. I realized my mouth was open when Godzilla unleashed the breath weapons. Fantastic
Love love love this film. Though I wonder how many people agree with me and wish this film had a full original score, sound effects, and roars?
I was sitting in the theater having the feeling of dread, while watching this movie .The unblinking eye,the devastation , and the total ineptitude by the govt. to do something.
it really echoed what is going on in our world today .
Became a really big fan of your work these passed few weeks. You've earned a new subscriber.
Watching the night scene on theaters blew my mind.
I love the focus on meetings... and moving the meetings from one room to another... and having more meetings. Meetings... meetings...
I was fortunate enough to see this ahow foe one hot day in the theater in 2016 subtitled. Had to own it on blu ray to show others.
*Persecution Of Who Will Know!*

This was an absolute masterpiece. I couldn't recommend this movie enough if I tried. Great review brother.
Proof that godzilla movies could be deep. Also you made a mistake about this godzilla, check out the song "who will know" which plays in the first atomic breath scene. It proves that this godzilla DOES have a conscience and is confused by what is going on with what is happening to his body.
this film has always been special to me since if it wasn’t for this movie I wouldn’t even be a kaiju fan
Shin Godzilla was my first Godzilla film.
Quite a fantastic and horrifying film to be your gateway to Godzilla.
Holy crap, welcome to the club, we have Monster Cookies, have fun
Great video, I Love the channel. You are very underappreciated and I wish you the best in the future
The first time I saw a trailer the thought that entered my mind was that creature looked like it was in great pain.
"Shin Godzilla would be one of the most striking and profound entries in the series"
I mean, consider it's competition lmao
I mean Earth Godzilla is MASSIVE but I think the 2014 Godzilla looks really good too
EDIT: A shit he meant the movies, my bad dude I thought he meant the look of the Shin Godzilla compared to the others XD
*The only reason why people hated this movie was because it wasn’t the American Godzilla, that’s it. They’re so blinded and bias*
@@alexyoutubechannel8175 that's your opinion
Thanks for giving this film justice. It deserves much more praise and love than the rest of the other movies. This and 1954 are the top movies. Both equally matched. I had the honor to see it in theater here in puerto rico and let me tell you. I will never ever forget that day.
Great review, can’t wait to see this one! We’re getting so close to KOTM.. excited to hear what you have to say about it!

Wow its amazing seeing how far you have come
I just saw this film for the first time today and loved it!
My second fav Godzilla behind the first one and one of my fav movies of the 2010's!
When I saw Shin Godzilla in the theaters, I left with some mixed emotions but the film stayed with me. It's one of those movies that you need to watch a few times to really take it all in and now I absolutely love the movie.
You give the movie the greatest review and understanding what it was doing with Godzilla
Just finished watching it. There would be so much to say, it’s easily the BEST Godzilla film ever
Even better than the original?
Yep, the design is very disturbing + the political satire made this film work. Actually, it's more of a political satire than an actual monster movie.
In the early forms, those blank, non-blinks eyes is really unsettling
Very Few people verbalize what a godzilla movie actually is as well as you buddy, from a G fan to another ❤️ #upfromthebest
Simply put: a masterpiece.
This was beautifully conveyed my lad
I'm literally watching it right now. I freaking love it. It's one of my favorite films ever.
This movie came out in the states the day before my birthday and I’d made sure I was gonna watch it
This channel is great you are going to be huge
Absolute masterpiece of filmmaking!
man i would have really wanted to see what would happen when it evolves again and there would be tiny human sized godzillas
They made their own godzilla all over again so it would not have to do with any of the other godzilla and use what they wanted to do with godzilla to do it their way to start with their own godzilla to come up with new ideas of their own godzilla to make it better and do things that know other godzilla can do but this godzilla to make it easier to make more movies to come up with something new each time
I'm in the middle of watching all the Godzilla films. I love every single one of them 😍
