Just my opinion but, just the vehicles, Kumi Mizuno's outfits, and the sparks that fly between her and Nick Adams, and then consider that cute, miniature apartment that they live in, I love this movie.
Because of the popularity of this movie and its follow-up in Germany, almost all german releases of the Godzilla movies of the Shouwa era have “Frankenstein” in their title. Sometimes the german script for the localisation was even slightly changed to make connections to a Dr. Frankenstein which created this or that in the corresponding movie. The late entries of the 70’s even shoved “King Kong” in the titles.
Rough translations (the year indicating the release of the corresponding Godzilla movie):
1964: Frankensteins Monster im Kampf gegen Ghidorah* → Frankenstein’s Monster in Battle against Ghidorah
1965: Befehl aus dem Dunkel → Order From the Dark
1966: Frankenstein und die Ungeheuer aus dem Meer → Frankenstein and the Monsters from the Sea
1967: Frankensteins Monster jagen Godzillas Sohn → Frankenstein’s Monsters Hunt Godzilla’s Son
1968: Frankenstein und die Monster aus dem All → Frankenstein and the Monsters from Space
1969: Godzilla - Attack All Monsters
1971: Frankensteins Kampf gegen die Teufelsmonster → Frankenstein’s Battle Against the Devil/Demon Monsters
1972: Frankensteins Höllenbrut → Frankenstein’s Hell Spawn
1973: King Kong - Dämonen aus dem Weltall → King Kong - Demons from Space
1974: King Kong gegen Godzilla → King Kong against Godzilla (Mechagodzilla is called “King Kong” here and was build by Dr. Frankenstein of course)
1975: Die Brut des Teufels: Konga, Godzilla, King Kong → The Spawn of the Devil: Konga, Godzilla, King Kong
Interestingly the 1964 movie was released for the first time in Germany in 2011 and still got such a flawed title because of “tradition”. Even the style of the german script and dub reflects that. The 1969 movie was released for the first time in Germany in 2013 and got a fairly normal title this time. Those two were the last classic Godzilla movies without a release in Germany. I will have to rename my collection of those movie releases to even know which one it is I’m holding in my hand.
@Mart Meijer Ein wahrer Experte der Materie. Sogar der "klassische" Name von Frankensteins Monster im Kampf gegen Ghidorah wurde erklärt.
I read this movie as Ishirō Honda slipping in some politics. Japanese society treated the survivors of the nuclear bombs in Hiroshima very poorly. But Honda has one of the cancer sufferers be a beautiful talented young girl who dies to soon and has Frankenstein stand in for the fears of the Japanese about radiation exposure. The bit where Kumi Mizomo's neighbor says, "Eh just another feral kid." is chilling.
Baragon is a good boy. he just wanted something to eat and the humans and Frankenstein bullied him :(

No way!
If it was GMK then I would. F
The opening WWII scenes are some of my favorite bits of the movie. I also like the parts where Frank is growing gigantic, but not yet full size. The sets (buildings etc.) when Frank is only around 5 meters tall are fun.
I remember seeing this movie waaaayyyy back when I was young on a Creature Double feature and remember it being so much more melancholy and sadder the other Toho monster movies. The young actor playing the title role really had some great moments/scenes that really elicited emotion from the viewer.
For how campy the premise is, I found this movie engaging and honestly profoundly disturbing. I could’ve done without the Baragon subplot, but I genuinely thought everything with the Frankenstein monster was well done.
I was hoping you'd do showa era Toho movies that don't star Godzilla.
War of the Gargantuas, Varan the Unbelievable, The Mysterians, Dogora, Space Ameba, Atragon..... Man I can't wait. 😃
+ 1
That's becase he's done reviews for those three already.
Maybe Ultraman? I'm watching the original seires now.
So am I! Finished Ultra Q and am now watching Ultraman.
I'd love reviews of those shows someday.
Never found this as good as other Toho kaiju films of the 60s but you are right, it has a lot of heart.
I enjoyed this movie a LOT!!! Seen it on Monster Week on ABC''s 4:30 Movie in the 1970's as well as many pre-cable UHF stations late night in the 1980's. And now I won the Blu-Ray. How time flies, huh? It's very surreal and in many ways carries on the story of Frankenstein's Monster having a hard time fitting into society. Also the idea of a LIVING monster (as opposed to the original story of the Monster) makes for a very weird and wonderful movie that creates a mixed bag of treats. And being it's a Toho movie, you KNOW you're gonna have a giant lizard in it somewhere, LOL
We need this on Blu-ray(be it Criterion, Mill Creek, or Arrow) now!!!
I love the forest setting for the final battle between Baragon and Frankenstein. We need more natural settings for kaiju fights instead of just the typical city.
Furuhata-san's acting is definitely the highlight of this movie, IMO. You really feel for the poor guy, in classic Karloff fashion. Sadly, after this movie he kind of fell off the face of the earth, and nobody knows what happened to him. I think this is a rough gem in Toho's stable of 60s movies, for sure, and I enjoy it because of Furuhata-san and the interplay between him and Kumi Mizuno.
Saw this as a youngster in a theater and still have fond memories of it. Any movie containing a prime Kumi Mizuno has a LOT going for it. CuffColl.
It’ll be interesting to see your thoughts on War of the Gargantuas.
I second that.
I third that
I fourth that
I Fifth that ....!
I sixth that
I forgot about this flick, it's been a long time..I'd like to watch it again..!
この「巨大な人間が怪獣と戦う」と言う設定が、後の「ウルトラマン」制作のヒントとなりました。
Huh...no mention of the original ending where Oodaku shows up out of nowhere to drag Frankenstein into the sea.
Oh well. Guess that'll get a mention when you review War of the Gargantuas.
Hopefully. That ending was just weird.
That's the alternate ending, not the original.
Always a happy day when you upload, great video!!!!
This movie actually scared me when I was a little kid , it’s still one of my favorites.... certainly bizarre, but there are some genuinely excellent moments !
R.I.P Baragon 1965-2001
First saw this at the Saturday morning kiddie show back in 1966 or 67 when I was 8. It instantly became my favorite non-Godzilla Kaiju movie.
Man I love Nick Adams, really wished he could have done more Kaiju films before he died.
What I REALLY love about this movie is that it is probably one of the first mainline kaiju films to really explore the nature of the relationship between humans and kaiju, by means of focusing on an entity who almost perfectly straddles the border between the two. Frankenstein's Kaiju is one of the most tragic kaiju of all time for that reason; outwardly resembling a human, but having grown up like an animal with no concept of human society or niceties, wishing no real harm on humans (those reporters he killed in the cell brought it upon themselves by foolishly provoking his wrath), but unable to truly live with humans due to humans and kaiju living in different worlds with different scales (him just trying to catch some breakfast causes destruction and panic). That moment at the end where he rescues the man who wanted to cut off an arm or leg and delivers him to his companions, as kaiju and humans gaze silently at each other there is a great sadness, as both sides so badly wish they could reconcile and co-exist, but that is simply not possible; at that point all there is left to do is fight a kaiju's fight, and share a kaiju's fate, the earth itself swallowing him up, perhaps in an act of mercy in recognition of how truly terrible a tragedy Frankenstein's Kaiju represents.
Great review. Can't wait for your view on War of the Gargantuas.
If you need help finding some Toho movies for future Up from the Depths videos, you can ask me about it.
This is my dad's favorite Godzilla movie, even though it doesn't actually have Godzilla. He particularly found Frankenstein a movie protagonist
the whole thing with nazis having Frankensteins heart was a cool plot thread, if someone ever did a new series of frankenstein movies that'd be a fun thing to add in.
Indiana Jones vs. Frankenstein. =^[.]~=
The one Toho Kaiju film I haven't seen. But looks very interesting. Great Review as always.
You literally said what I said lol
Such a classic movie and a underrated gem
I remember watching this film as a kid and being disturbed by the scene where the school kids find the dead rabbit. Freaked me out at 10 years old.
that whole scene is strange. the kids move swiftly in a pack, in and out of doors and desk rows. "a rabbit. a dead rabbit!" whoosh they're gone.
Any movie with Baragon in it is a movie worth watching! ❤
Not that Barugan!
One of my favorite films along with War of the Gargantuas...crazy mayhem you will never see again.
I actually haven’t seen this one, but it looks really interesting.
There's a follow up of sorts. Attack of the Gargantua. A piece or two of Frank, regens into two very different twins.
I love this movie. I wish Toho would make kaiju movies like they did in the showa era. If they restart it they should focus on a new monster as the main character of the Toho universe and build towards Godzilla slowly.
Nick adams was awesome. He always treated the movies he was in with sincerity. Unlike russ tamblin who seemed to believe he was too good to be a Japanese monster film. Kumi Mizuno obviously is great.
I really need to track this one down soon. I like how your reviews are often informative without giving too much away. Think you'll do War of the Gargantuas next?
Fun movie, I enjoy my DVD I bought about a month ago. Great review!
Really hope you do the Rebirth of Mothra trilogy and maybe Varan. Anyways, I do love you’re content. I always look forward to you’re work.
It’s you :0
I'm pretty sure this was the first Kaiju movie I ever saw in the late 60's. Then came Attack of the Gargantua.
I actually think the Frankenstein concept fits well into a kaiju universe, since the monster is a tragic figure that reflects how we are as a species, similar to most kaiju.
I think King Kong was supposed to be Frankesien. That's why he got powers when he was struck by lightning.
The concept of Kong vs. Frankenstein was actually 1st thought up by Willis Obrien... But he never was able to get proper backing!
Interesting thing about this flic was it's reference to Japan's wartime Alliance with Germany! Most Kaiju films downplay that! In fact... in 'King of Monsters', there is an implication that Dr. Serizawa started working on the O2 Destroyer during WWII co-working with German scientists. (To thwart Allied Amphibious Landings, presumably!)
2:18 - 2:25: That's practically identical to a scene from "The Room"
Nick Adams had a thing for Kumi Mizuno. From what I’ve read, he was really persistent. Not in a bad way though.
Gamera also had an enemy monster named Baragon/Barugon.
I'm surprised you didn't mention once the fact that Frankenstein is not the name of the monster in the original story.
I just assume everyone knows that at this point, which I know is probably not true.
Technically he is Doctor Frankenstein's son, thus he would also have the surname Frankenstein
It's even in the climax of the original story that the monster was never given a name. But that is one of the greatest misconceptions in classic literature. No chance of correcting it in a single RUclips video.
I just call him the Creature, or Frank’s boy.
Bland cast????... Dude...Nick Adams was never bland. One of the best entries in the Toho library...
We need Frankenstein. The world needs him.
This was the creepiest movie when I saw it in my 20’s. Caught it on TV one Saturday.
Next to War Of The Gargantuas this was a bona fide classic also. Sucks that its not on YT or anywhere for FREE!!! HELLO!!!
I expected you'd do Mothra next, but Frankenstein is a good choice too. Next one will be War of the Gargantuas I guess?
Gotta get these movies. Wonder if there's a collection
Frankenstein conquers the world has without a doubt one of the best stories in all of Toho's kaiju films.
This is a sentimental favorite of mine. NYC area, 1970s, 4:30 movie.
Ahh Baragon, the monster who's roar became the roar of hundreds of ultraman monsters, and who's suit was reused at least 4-5 times in that show. I wonder why him? Why of all the monsters, Baragon made such an impact?
the idea of a giant frankenstein monster, and a sequel thereof involving king kong, were originally created by willis o'brien himself. he was outraged when he heard that toho made kong vs. godzilla. you can find production drawings by obrien on-line.
Fun fact, did you know that the actor who is playing Baragon was Haruo Nakajima the same suit actor who played Godzilla 1954-1972
Probably my favorite non Godzilla toho kaiju film
My love of this film is something my closest friends have never understood
I was hoping you would include a comment on the deleted Giant Octopus fight scene that was cut from the final print of the film!
Love this movie because of Baragon!!!
I always wondered where TOHO got the... interesting.. idea of making a giant Frankenstein and then having him fight Baragon.
I'd love for you to do a video on Matango, another non-Godzilla Toho film. I watched it recently and was really impressed by it.
This a has been a recent thought of mine, but maybe creating Sanda wasn't needed. He has basically the same backstory as Frankenstein, a similar enough personality and the more popular Gargantua is Gaira anyway. So they could have doubled down on War of the Gargantuas being a sequel by using Frankenstein in Sanda's role and instead of creating Akemi and Paul Stewart reuse Sueko and James Bowen.
Or if Sanda needed to be created Ishiro Honda could have commited to making this a standalone like he wanted to, giving Sanda and Gaira different origins, like them being types of giant apes or both being experiments created by humans to do a nature vs nuture experiment (as soon as he's born Gaira is left in the wild while Sanda is chosen to be the one raised with love and kindness by humans)
What sounds like a better direction?
I just love the weirdness of this movie, just the same with War of the Gargantuas. They even remind me of classic western horror akin to some Hammer movies.
I like this movie quite a lot but War of the Gargantuas is even better. I don't particularly agree with your take on the cast but yeah, they aren't that much memorable, but I think they're good enough. Surely an underrated kaiju movie.
Good review! Hope you cover more of these.
4:29 Tsuburaya actually green-lit this effect himself despite knowing he could’ve used a more convincing method. His reasoning? He thought the prop looked funnier
I remember one of the scientists saying the boys hand will be cut off. And if it grew back, then, he is Frankenstein.
i watched this when i was 6 years old while alone in 1968 scared the crap out of me did'nt look so cheesy back then i always thought it was franenstein conquers the earth, this was just a memory until i found it on youtube
My childhood movies. Kaiju flicks.
Baragon has been done dirty since day one
Give him more appearances and like maybe a better survival rate please
???
改造巨人フランケンシュタインvs地底怪獣バラゴン
Baragon who also like Rodan has a wonderful debut just to be a jobber/shafted in later entries
So the brown or green Gargantua was created by a piece of Frankensteins tissue?
I love this movie💕💕
This movie has two versions in the ending.
①
When Frankenstein's boy has defeated Baragon,
a crack in the ground has come. And
both of them fall into the ground.
②
Frankenstein's boy defeats Baragon.
Then a giant octopus appears and drags F's boy into a lake.
( I don't know how the octopus could live in the lake in the mountains.
But the giant octopus appeared by request from the U.S.company.)
This movie is pretty cool. I thought it was a fun flick
Thank you for the ❤️ and the amazing content
I know this movie isn't the best that showa-era toho has to offer...
...but it did introduce our lord, savior, and puppy-unicorn-dino Baragon, so it's still my favorite.
Good review. I'm still half-interested in this film, guess that means it should be viewed with lower expectations than a Godzilla flick
Lol a lot of G fans are clamoring for a 300 foot Frankenstein to appear in the monsterverse
I wanna see this movie so bad
Love this movie
After seeing this movie I didn't like walking alone at night for a while 😅
I saw this on Monstervision with Joe Bob Briggs
Where can you watch this? I cant find it anywhere
This Movie's Title is Frankenstein vs Baragon, NOT Frankenstein Conquers the World.
I kind of forgot about this movie. Been a long time since maybe early 1980's on the 4:30 movie on channel 7 in New York City. I think him fighting Godzilla or King Kong would have been interesting.
How about the 90s Mothra trilogy? I always liked those
I never. :-)
I sure wish that Mary Shelly would have just named the MONSTER Frankenstein, but she didn't, yet EVERYONE calls him Frankenstein! It's understandable because that name really suits the monster. Anyway, this is a PET PEEVE I have. It just pulls me out of the story when It happens.✌️
Frankenstein Conquers The World - 1965 and War Of The Gargantuas - 1966.
The two strangest and most frightening Kaiju films ever made.
If you already haven't done it, do "King Kong Escapes!! Cinematic verite.
Well, now know this movie existed. Thank you for that. I'm just not sure what to do with that knowledge.
Watch it.
I'd watch it if it sounds interesting to you.
Next do its “sequel” war of the. gargantuans
I finished watching this movie last night
I thought that the character's were ok but the chemistry between Dr. Bowen and Dr. Togami just doesn't make sense
music is awesome
fight scenes are awesome
I just hate the alternate ending which features the giant octopus from king kong vs godzilla which was only there to kill Frankenstein
but nonetheless it's a good film
7/10
フランケン役の俳優の素顔はイケメンだそうだ、
今から思うとニックアダムスがプーチンにそっくりだ。
This movie is 5stars.
I remember watching this on American Movie Classics as a kid - pretty zany, not great, but not without its charms.
God that reminds me of the weird mangaverse Hulk - where banner turns into a sort of godzilla hulk mashup
When I saw this as a kid..... not knowing the history of the movie. I am mediately thought leave it to Japan to make a giant Frankenstein
