This movie goes 3 generations in my family. My mom first saw this when she was 12 years old, then she showed me and my little sister this movie when we where 5 and 6, just recently my and my sister had movie night and we showed this movie to my nephew and my daughter......... This movie is basically apart of my life, and it will forever hold a extremely special place in my heart forever..
Fun trivia: Haruo Nakajima plays Gaira (The Green Gargantua), and he actually considers it his greatest performance other than the original Godzilla in 1954. It was also the ONLY performance where you could see his own eyes.

When they died at the end my Uncle made a joke that it was Godzilla telling them to shut up so he could sleep. I believe it to this day.

This may be the only kaiju film I've ever seen where conventional military force actually hurts the creatures. Gaira was almost dead when Sanda showed up.
Agree you could see his flesh torn and how does gaira show his appreciation for being saved by Sanda he goes hunting people for dinner how evil and ungrateful 😅
The special effects are shockingly good in this movie. Particularly the composites of human characters in front of miniatures. I haven't seen another Kaiju movie of this era come close to its quality here.
As a child I watched anything with monsters. I don’t remember my age (6-8), visiting family in California, watching this movie for the first time. The green gargantuan frightened me so much I would hide my eyes and peek at the tv. When the fisherman in his little row boat looks down over the rail and sees the green gargantuan looking up at him, I hid under a blanket!

The scene where the two fisherman see Green Gargantua leering up at them just below the surface of the water was (and still is) pure nightmare fuel. Easily one of Toho's all time best and still holds up.
Absolutely one of my all-time favorite movies! Still holds that magic for me as it did when I was a child. And now my son is in love with it too!
Perhaps my very favorite non-Godzilla kaiju film. The shot of the fisherman looking over the side of his boat and seeing the Gargantua underwater staring up at him has to be one of the truly classic moments in all fantastic cinema, not just kaiju films. I get goosebumps whenever I see it. Excellent review as always.
THIS ! This was the movie that I looked forward to seeing on tv more than any other “ monster movie “ when I was a kid ..! There were some genuinely horrifying moments In this film ! Gaira was terrifying to me , which made Sanda all the more heroic ! The combat was great ! Still one of my absolute favorites!

I grew up in the 1970's and looked forward to seeing this on TV, too! Everything about Gaira was creepy to me! His appearance, the SOUNDS he makes...the stuff of nightmares! That shot of him under the water looking up....oh, man...stuck in my head forever! Don't even get me started on him chewing up that woman and then spitting out her clothes! The movie definitely made an impact on me. Now I can watch it on Blu-ray on my projector, and the picture is 10-feet wide!!! Yikes! Now THAT'S scary!!!

I watched an episode of Scooby Doo that was a tribute to this film for some reason.
They even featured the song "The Words Get Stuck In My Throat".

My brother and I absolutely loved this movie. As kids in the 70's watching these types of movies was great! I saw it on tv a few months back and recorded it.
I grew up in the 70's, too, and always got excited when this movie was shown! Scared the crap out of me but I loved it!
Russ Tamblyn has no charisma in this because because he chose not to have any. He thought this movie was beneath him, so he phoned in his performance. He gave Honda and the Japanese crew all kids of trouble during the production. Nick Adams actually cared about the films he was in.
I've heard that before about his "performance" in this. What a dick! Why do the film at all if he's not even going to try and felt it was beneath him? That question is sort of rhetorical because we all know he wasn't doing much after "West Side Story" so of course he just needed the work. So apparently it WASN'T beneath him because he took the job.
Tamblyn would later state that he regrets his lackluster performance. I heard he saw the film at a convention in recent years and cringed at himself.

I have said this my entire working career as an aerospace engineer "It doesn't matter how the company or the job treats me, it matters how I handle myself and it's a direct reflection of my integrity and reputation". No matter how bad the situation, we should do the best we can regardless.
Adams also cared a lot about Kumi Mizuno too, which many think was the reason he committed suicide, due to her spurning of his advances and his wife leaving him back in the States. Regardless, Adams holds the high honor of being the very first American lead in a Japanese movie, as Frankenstein Conquers The World is allegedly the first East-West film collaboration ever.
Did you know he was an alcoholic and added dialogue into the movie not in the script.... even tho the monsters were supposed to offspring of Frankensteins genetics I loved the way they showed the land monsters footprints in the s ow like he was the yeti... doodle for thought
Ominous, dreadful and frightening.
For so long this has been one of my favorite movies ever made.
With haunting and horrifying theme music.
And because we are shown a human lady being attacked and devoured,
Along with the gargantuas receiving wounds and injuries while actually bleeding,
As well as how we can actually see the giant monsters real eyes,
Makes this above and beyond any other kaiju film, especially for back then...
Scared the hell out of me When i was a kid and when i went swimming, i thought Gaira was gonna get me.
Now as an adult, damn i love this move and Nakajima really did an amazing job. I love how he runs, feel like he one of the only showa kaiju to run. Obviously because of the suit but still. Dope as hell.
When I was around 8 years old in the early 70s I saw that this film was being shown at the local Drive-In theater. It was either a Friday or Saturday night and I remember the weather was dark and rainy but I started to ask for my mom to take me and to my amazement she agreed with little begging! I was really surprised because of the weather, but we went and though it rained on and off we stayed until the end and I loved it. My mom actually seemed to enjoy it too! I've obviously never forgotten that one lol!
Then 10 years ago I was at a garage sale and bang, a dvd copy of War of the Gargantuas was in the stack!!! I couldnt believe it, I was ridiculously happy to find it and though not as scary as I remembered lol, it's a classic!
Wow! I was born in '65 and only got to see this movie on television in the 1970's. It must have been awesome to see on a huge drive-in screen!!! Your mom ROCKS for taking you!

That's a classic movie I love that movie....I remember seeing it on Monster Theater in the late 70 or early 1980s... That's when I was a kid and my parents couldn't get me away from the T.v. until a commercial came on....ahhhh the good ol days.....

@Caben 1983that was it's original title when it was released in Japan. Did you even it in Japanese? There are several references to Frankenstein in that version if the film.

So many of the effects scenes were re-used in later films. It's still a worthwhile and fun film.

A Kids in the 70/80s, every week me and my brother would scan the latest TV guide to see when Johnny Sokko And His Flying Robot, or War of the Gargantuas was coming on TV... 2 of my all time favorites.
One of the Most Overlooked Films ever made in my opinion. Great Review.

I finally added this classic to my video collection...I watch this movie as a kid & loved it then and still do today...this movie takes me back to a time in my life when things was simple & fun...even though it doesn't compare to today movies...I still have a great appreciation for it...War Of The Gargantuas
This movie is my favorite Toho spinoff. I'm an identical twin in real life, so I have a preference for these kind of movies. The scene where Sanda studies the human remains surrounding Gaira and flips his lid over the betrayal is one of my favorite Kaiju scenes ever. The only thing I don't like is Russ Tamblyn's performance, I prefer Nick Adams.
You could tell in that moment that Sanda knew he made a huge mistake!

Absolutely loved this one as a kid. It was gross and scary and violent with great weapons, battles and miniatures. Wish they'd do more like this one.
Toho is REALLY WEIRD with continuity with their old movies.
Well this enters into the Godzilla realm because it is mentioned in Godzilla Against Mechagodzilla.
@@martinsuper4545 No not that. It's even in the Japanese cut retcons Conquers the World. Instead of having Frankenstein's creature in the flashback it's like a tiny small brown Gargantua.

Apparently, In contrast with Nick Adams who developed a friendly relationship with Ishiro Honda, Russ Tamblyn was the complete opposite. He was a complete jerk towards Honda and the entire crew.
Really! I knew it. I could tell he didn't want to be in Japan making that film. Like a child who didn't get his way, he threw a temper tantrum. I wonder what he was so unhappy about. Thank you.

@Caben 1983 I felt he was reading his lines with no passion for the character. Like he just wanted to get it over with. It's just a hunch.
The scene on the train, Tamblyn had a flickering eye and I thought some one in the crew punched him in the face for being an asshole. He would deserve it!
Nice review. When I was a kid back in the ‘60’s I absolutely loved this film. Saw it at the drive-in and was blown away. Still ranks as a favorite Toho/kaiju.
I saw this movie as a kid circa 1972. I especially loved it because I'd lived in Japan in 69-70. Still one of my faves. Thanks for this review, even if I'm 3 years late. 😊

Great flick ... very spooky with creepy giant monsters that keep you glued till the very end , I loved the song by the singer played by actress Kipp Hamilton who had happened to have more than 25 television & film credits during her short career , she passed away at a young age of 46 due to breast cancer
Definitely a genre classic! That people like Owen Wilson put it among their favorites can only add to its growing charm.
I have to say that this is one of my all-time favorite Kaijus, with all of its flaws -- who cares? Even its goofier moments -- yes, yes -- "the words get stuck in my throat' -- are memorable.
This move was one of the best. The fights between the creatures was top notch.

I was born in '65 so I probably had a similar experience watching this on TV in the early 70's for the first time. The green monster always creeped me out but it's my favorite monster movie from that era.

I absolutely love this movie. I've always been a kaiju buff. These movies are my guilty pleasure and I always watch this one whenever I'm feeling down. I don't know why I love it so much but it's so much fun and entertaining to me. I was born the year this movie came out so maybe it just has a special place in my heart because of that. Enjoyed your commentary.
I have a maser cannon model from the movie on my desk. My favorite piece of equipment from any kaiju movie. The set piece battle where the military ambushes Gaira is so well done, the animated maser beams cutting down trees via someone setting off squibs still entertains me to this day.
I asked for this a few weeks ago and thank you for this great review. I think it deserves at least another half star if not full. I also agree with your synopsis and summery. Of all the remakes this is probably the most compelling to get done because it does humanize the monsters and I think it can really be done well in this day with the right script.
Growing up an identical twin, this movie was very sad to me as a child watching it, and I will agree, one of the best movies of it's kind.
I appreciate that the maser cannons only target Gaira in the climactic battle. Even the military recognizes that Sanda is not the enemy.

This is by far the greatest monster movie I’ve ever seen. It moves beautifully and the green monster scared the living shit outta me as well as captured my attention by the way the actor expressed himself. He had the movements and the energy that brought it to life and made me believe that was an insane giant monster. All others pale badly in comparison.
Watched this many times on "The Big Monster Movie" on Channel 46 out of Charlotte, NC in the 80's. They showed a Japanese Kaiju film every Saturday at 12.

They were showing this movie every day for one week on this station and I watched it everyday. On Friday the last day it was to be shown my brother broke his wrist and my mother drove him and me to the hospital. After the doctors took him in the room to work on him I had 30 minutes before the movie was gonna start so I ask my mom if she could take me home so I could watch it. She said you’ve seen it all week and I said bu5 today’s the last day. She rolled her eyes and took me home. That’s the impact it made on me.

Funny to hear now that this is considered an "overlooked" movie, I'd never have guessed. When I was a kid, this was part of a package of Toho daikaiju flicks that aired regularly on local stations - the earlier movie, FCtW, was not part of the package. Thanks to ads in the back of Famous Monsters of Filmland magazine, I knew that the Frankenstein movie existed but not that it was a Toho daikaiju flick, much less that WotG was meant to be a sequel. WotG was easily one of my faves back then, I caught it every time it aired.
The films in that marketed package were Godzilla (Burr version), Rodan, Mothra, King Kong vs. Godzilla, Godzilla v. the Thing, Monster Zero, War of the Gargantuas, Godzilla v. the Sea Monster, Son of Godzilla, King Kong Escapes, Godzilla's Revenge, and Godzilla v. the Smog Monster. Notice a few glaring absences there! I never saw the rest until I was an adult, and for the longest time thought that "Ghidorah, the Three-Headed Monster" and "Monster Zero" were the same film under alternate titles.
Legendary should remake this for the Monsterverse.
One of the few monster movies of my childhood that genuinely creeped me out.

One of my best nights of TV watching was when KTLA showed a replay of the ND vs USC game where ND was up 24 0 and USC creamed them 55 24 and then showed this movie afterwards!!!! A 10 year olds dream!!!!!
I had to look this film up on Google. I remembered one part from it as a kid, that terrified me so bad. It was the scene where the lady got picked from the building and was eaten.
Must have been harrowing living in Japan in the 1950s and 60s: every year gigantic monsters ravaged the land.

I would love to see a documentary on the set and model designs used in these films. Quite fascinating - despite not being higher end, they did well to permit young viewers to engage their imagination into the science fiction.
