    I had a mecha-Kong action figure as a kid. Never really knew what it was from, or where it came from, until now. Pretty big size for an action figure too, it’s sitting in the garage atm. I knew it must have come from a Kaiju movie, but one with King Kong? Like I made jokes at the time it was Mecha-Kong, now I’m watching this video, and there clear as day is a life-size version of that toy fighting King Kong. Suffice to say: This made my freaking day. @Gasper Vidovic Just rereading my old comment. Meant to say 1976 missed the opportunity to be a great adventure film. Reasons is lack of Monster fight from this film. Only one fight was the giant snake and that is it. And I don't count military battling Kong as a monster fight. Like the film from Peter Jackson Kong battled different creatures.

      While Gorosaurus was generic enough to escape such scrutiny, Mechani-Kong is so closely connected to King Kong that it falls under Kong's copyright. Once Toho let permission to use Kong lapse, Mechani-Kong was off the board as well.

      @andrewtaylor940 4 года назад +10

      The problem is Toho doesn't have exclusive rights to him. He's sort of complicated. I think the Rankin Bass portfolio owns a piece of him as well. So it costs extra to use him again and they have to cut a side deal. It's also why you don't see much Merchandise of him. Now might be the best time to have a chance of seeing him again as Warner Brothers owns the Rankin Bass stuff and Toho currently has a fairly evolved partnership with WB.

    • @andrewtaylor940
      @andrewtaylor940 4 года назад +1

      @@ScreamingScallop The problem isn't so much the global Kong license, which they may be able to work around. Most licences didn't cover derivatives back then. They could likely use him but change the name. The big problem is King Kong Escapes was a fully joint venture with Rankin Bass. So Rankin Bass (The Rudolf people) own a piece of MechaniKong as well. They were hoovered up by Warner Brothers years ago.

    Great review.
    A little insight from the time. I was seven years old when "King Kong Escapes" debuted shortly after 1st grade let off for summer vacation.
    At the time all I saw, or needed to see was the trailer on a TV spot, and a check of the local paper showed wonderful ads. I lobbied Dad to take me to see it- the trailer's glimpse of the Mecha-Kong sold me on the spot. Mine was the same demographic age group that the "King Kong" animated TV series was aiming at, and it worked! I was eager to see it.
    No success at home. Dad saw that the credits showed Japanese director & actors, and he said their movies were "no good" just men in monster suits. I was crushed. He wouldn't take me to see it.
    Local kids saw it though, and that fall they told me all about it. A real hoot! Told me the outline of the story too.
    It was about six years later that I happened to catch the last 30 minutes of it on TV. Recognized the Mecha-Kong. Was quite pleased with it. Finally saw it in full length about 20 years later, off an imported Toho 12" laser disc that I could rent. I enjoyed it all. The Special effects had their good, and not so good moments. They were at their best when at the end of the film, Kong is loping along a dock to catch Dr. Huu's ship, closely followed by a car miniature. Worst were the water effects, which in those days before CGI, couldn't be convincingly reduced in scale. It didn't help when the Kong suit got soaked. For all that "King Kong Escapes" remains delightful entertainment.

    For a non Godzilla toho film, I actually loved it when I saw it on TV as a kid. I thought Kong looked better, I finally got to see Gorosaurus in action (and not just from pics in old monster mags), and thought Mechani-Kong looked cool as hell. Would have LOVED a battle between Mechani-Kong and the Big G, circa '63, '64, and even '69. This was just fun.
    I think it helped that I caught it by surprise as a kid on a Sunday, when I was having a horrid week and was dreading returning to school the next day. Kaiju sort of helped with that.
    I saw my first Gamera a film when I was 7 on USA's Captain USA's Groovy Movies (he was sort of a "bad movie" host that showed tons of great genre films). I had just come home from seeing my mother, and having her explain to me that her and my dad were indeed getting a divorce. I was devastated. But , for some reason, when I came home and turned the TV on, I had an odd feeling of relief. Captain USA showing Gamera vs. Barugon was like he was saying "Hey kid. It'll be ok". Weird...I know. But it was the same way with this film. I think that is why I like it so much.
    Sorry for the rant. It just always had a place in my memory bank. Keep up the great work , man. Love this channel

    A fun film to watch with a big bowl of popcorn. Forget about Kong and Dr. Who and the monsters. In this film there is the gorgeous Linda Miller and the gorgeous Mie Hama. Miller did not do much acting after this film and Hama played Kissy Suziki in You Only Live Twice (the girl who "marries" Bond-san).

      Silly and kinda goofy, but that was some of the charm. Its all we had back then. Us folks with a few years to us have witnessed the what was to what is and the steps of evolution between. This applies to many things. Such as the KOTM recent film. Decades of waiting to see the 4 of them come to life with todays tech meant a lot. Its a different appreciation having watched these monsters for over 40 years.

    • @noblegas7073

      I’m not that far behind you. I’m coming up on middle age and 30 years of watching these films myself.
      I didn’t mean it as a pejorative when I called it ultra silly. I do find that charming and part of the appeal as well.
      Especially when you take the time frame into account.
      More what I was trying to get at was that the silliness in this film didn’t translate into anything memorable as it did for many other Showa era kaiju films.

      @@noblegas7073 as soon as they called Ghidorah "Monster Zero" I had a feeling many more nods to history were coming. They git the quick tail whip and stomp on his neck in just like I wanted to see. At the end when he was flying after her he was slow and horizontal and not very high that scene from a distance was a great addition. Mothras scales as her last defense was cool. Yeah we had to take those steps over the decades and all that campiness. Great memories. Theres just one monster event left I want to see and thats Godzilla hearing the whirring sound and watching Gamera flying in spinning and landing in front of big G with a roar. Id rather see Gamera with Godzilla than Kong and Godzilla. Theres money out there to pull it off.

      UnknownGoji1207 I disagree. Kotm was, in my opinion, better than some of the dumb action movies we get nowadays. • @nerdsman567
      @nerdsman567 4 года назад +5

      Exactly! Most of the scenes involving the classic Toho kaiju in KOTM had already been done in Toho's older Godzilla films. Even worse is that most of those older films did it better. For example, Burning Godzilla from "Godzilla vs. Destoroyah" was much more impactful because it served a greater narrative purpose (Especially since that movie was originally intended to be Toho's last Godzilla movie), as opposed to KOTM's Fire Godzilla, which solely exists as both an overly contrived reference to "Godzilla vs. Destoroyah" and as a deus ex machina for Godzilla to defeat King Ghidorah.

    • @SaurianStudios1207
      @SaurianStudios1207 4 года назад +3

      nerdsman567 agreed, kotm was just boring, stupid garbage, choosing to copy everything Toho has done rather than make its own identity.

    • @jurassickaiju14
      @jurassickaiju14 4 года назад +4

      @@nerdsman567 @nerdsman567 I think the whole Burning Godzilla in KOTM thing was a bit of a double reference. One to GvD, obviously, but I can't help but wonder if it's a reference to the mythical Hydra as well. If I recall correctly, the only way to kill a hydra was to cauterize the stumps of its necks after you chopped the head off. In other words, you burn it-which is more or less what Goji does go Ghidorah at the end of the movie. It wouldn't surprise me, considering the MonsterVerse's "all myths are actually kaiju" approach.
      GvD of course has a greater gut punch factor (it's one of the few movie scenes that actually moves me to tears when I watch it), but I'm fine with how KOTM did it too.
      ...wait a minute, how did we start talking about KOTM in a King Kong Escapes video?

    Actually, both Mechanikong and Dr. Who were introduced on "The King Kong Show" which, like "KIng Kong Escapes", was co-produced by Rankin & Bass Productions (the cartoon was made with Toei Animation).
    Both were redesigned by Toho, making their Dr. Who resemble the BBC's famous time lord (the cartoon's original was a short guy with a large, bald head with glasses, a lab coat and black gloves), while Mechanikong became silver and had hands instead of the cartoon's brown color and claws...
