I survived my teen years in a room with a poster of King Kong (1976) hanging on the wall and the Aurora plastic model on my shelf (to go with Frankenstein, Wolfman, Dracula, and Dr Jekyll/Mr Hyde). Having caught the original version in a late-night "Creature Feature" show, followed the very next week by "Son of Kong", it was inevitable that I become a Big Monkey fan. But then University intervened and the 80s were a blur of Mad Max and Robocop and Better Off Dead and Monty Python and assorted and unremarkable rom-coms until finally I was able to return to the joys of my youth by introducing my offspring to the wonders of Classic Cinema (starting with Buster Keaton and proceeding onward through Monty Python and beyond) in the 90s; and now I'm proud to say that, all grown up now, they all have a deep appreciation for the subtle nuance of fantasy, sci-fi, horror, spaghetti westerns, crime & detective noir through the ages. And though we have not yet seen King Kong Lives! (except for RUclips clips), rest assured we shall soon make up for this serious gap in our Cinema Education! (I just don't have the *heart* to deprive them of it ...)
I hope you enjoy it. It's weird 1980s wonderfulness.
Haven't seen this one. I think the are-you-kidding-me premise caused people to stay away from it in droves.
Your discussion of Sgt. CigarChomper's death reminded me of Mad Magazine's take on the death of the Charles Grodin character (the promoter guy) in the '76 movie. As Kong is escaping, he yells out "Where are you going? You can't run out on me! You can't leave me flat!" -- at which point Kong stomps on him. 🤣 Good ol' Mad Magazine.
Yep. The death is amusing and apt.
Ah, what day can be complete without the dulcet antipodean tones of the internets greatest movie critic, delivered with charm, incite and grace from a handsome countenance that the angels themselves would weep to behold; tears of ecstasy that Gods creation could harbour such majesty.
Aw ahucks, thank you.
Personally 1976 King Kong is my favourite movie of the remakes, it was the first movie I saw on the big screen as a kid and they were showing it at the State theatre in Market St Sydney, they even had an intermission.
The 76 King Kong has the virtue of being incredibly silly.
I saw the 76 version of King Kong when it came out as I was a fan of the 33 version from so many TV airings. I was disappointed but mostly from the lack of dinosaurs on Skull Island (apart from the big snake). On rewatches, Jessica Lange sounds like she's high in the film. Never saw KK Lives. I when to sci-fi conventions in the 80s and recall the film being hyped before it's release but as soon as they said Kong gets a heart transplant, the audience was laughing. I'm sure it's campy fun. The film is a running joke in the Mark Wahlberg comedy The Big Hit.
Jessica Lange's first acting role was King Kong. I suspect it's imposter syndrome and being scared.
KK Lives is much better than people suspect.
StudioCanal recently re-released a remastered edition of the '76 King Kong. It was a little odd to see that and Umbrella's King Kong Lives get released in Australia so close to each other.
Umbrella wasn't sure about it but according to my contact there, it's selling well. People who bought Umbrellas blu-ray are getting the sequel.
Thanks Terry for your content. Not enough people in my life to talk movies with so I always enjoy your videos. You are causing me to add so many movies to my Letterboxd watch list and you have motivated me to start buying phisical media again.
Thanks
Hope this comment helps with the algorithm.
Thanks, Shawn. I'll keep sharing the good stuff.
Bought the Scream Factory 1976 Kong bku ray back in 2021, just received my Umbrella Collectors Edition of Lives with the poster and postcards yesterday in the mail!
Cool! It's a good solid release.😀
I'll have to give this one another go. I haven't seen it since I was about eight years old on VHS. It seems like it's a once every thirty years type of flick. Lmao
It's bold in places and silly in others and that's entertainment.
Sorry Terry. As a denizen of the North American Deep South, I must note that the scaly critters that Escaped Kong eats would be alligators. Australia has Crocs, the Americas have alligators.
Oh blast! I forgot about South and Central American caimans. Still, they are not found in Georgia, so.
Either way, they probably taste like chicken.
@@terrytalksmovies Had a first generation Chinese Texican room mate at University. He introduced me to Texas cuisine. One year we went to the annual Rattlesnake Roundup, (the end of March.) I speak from experience; rattlesnake does taste like chicken.
Stay safe!
The Money Movers. A film I saw when it was released and then read the book. Very enjoyable.
It is.
A few years ago I gave both a re-watch and really enjoyed them both. King Kong was definitely a product of its time, and since I was of that time it resonates with me. I get the references and for me it just feels like the 70s and make me think of bell bottoms, disco and the American Freedom Train and I can feel the malaise.
At the same time a South Korean movie came out, A*P*E. with the tag line "not to be confused with King Kong. I remember seeing a commercial for it and was hooked when the announcer said, "see ape battle great white shark."
I was at a friends house and we were planning to see King Kong. I suggested A*P*E and gave my reasons. I was outvoted by my friends mom so we saw KK. Years later, when I finally saw A*P*E I had to give her credit for making the right choice.
As for KK Lives, I found I really enjoyed it. Not sure which KK movie I like better, but will often have a mini marathon featuring these three flicks. It's the perfect movie for when you just want drink beer, eat junk food and not have to think!
KKL has enhanced silliness, which tips it over for me.
I'm waiting for my copy King Kong Lives .I remember watching it and find it fun. Another great video and I agree with you.
Thanks, mate. It's fun if you have a shandy or two before watching it. 😉
In the first movie Rick Baker designed the great suit and he played Kong himself.
Baker's work was always great but the mechanical workings of the ape head were basic.
@@terrytalksmovies And the full-size Kong was crap, but the full-size arms, used for close-ups with the damsel, were great!
Another great review. I remember when I first saw the 1976 King Kong (at a very young age)....I naively thought that Kong was a giant animatronic all through the movie (in fact it appeared in one scene as it didn't really work). So I left the cinema very impressed. I then found out it was a MAN IN A SUIT!(albeit a very good one courtesy of Rick Baker). So I've avoided King Kong Lives. I will now seek it out. Here's to low expectations 👍
The surgical procedures are mindboggling fun.
Never heard of this movie, and I was in their core potential audience when it was released. Thanks for the review.
My pleasure, Ed.
LOL'd at your brief digression about crocodile: "it's a noice meat."
It is. They breed them in the Northern Territory for leather and meat.
@@terrytalksmovies I seem to recall having gator once. I remember it being good.
I do EVERYTHING in 2023 with lowered expectations!
I try not to. I've been cynical but it didn't enrich my life.
Straight away my mind went to "how does King Kong get the anticoagulant therapy for his artificial heart after he has escaped?". A 2020 article in the British Medical Journal titled "Warfarin in patients with mechanical heart valves" states that an INR target range is 2.0-3.0. Am I overthinking this?
The possibility exists that you are overthinking it.
@Ian Murrell - Can you email me your address at kultguru at gmail? You won the prize this time around.
Will definitely put this one on my rather lengthy list of films to check out in the future. Agree with your opinion on the 76 Kong. Thanks for the review.
My pleasure, Andrew.
I did like this film cus it didn't give us the crap poster the first one did with King Kong being shot at by jet planes!
It has a few virtues.
My best friend and I got up and went to another movie in the multiplex.
Neither of us like King Kong Lives
Might be time to give it another go.
@@terrytalksmovies I did see the ending on Cable latter that year.
I think about checking it out again.
Terry….I came across a very bizarre Roger Corman film the other day.
It’s titled, “Hell comes to Frog Town”. It was so bad, I couldn’t stop watching it.
Ever hear of it? I would be interested on your thoughts on it if you’ve seen it.
Thanks
Yep. Roddie Piper and I have the same birthday.
My all time favourite movie is the original King Kong (1933). I went and saw King Kong Lives at the cinema when it first came out. And I did enjoy it quite a bit. I think I would rate it as a pretty dumb movie, but it is a fun one.
A movie that entertains is definitely worthwhile. This one is great dumb fun.
Thank you Terry...I have not seen KING KONG LIVES...it looks like my kind of movie. If I recall correctly Rick Baker created the Kong costumes for King Kong 1976. My favourite Carlo Rambaldi creature was the star navigator in DUNE 1984. I've often wondered how Dino De Laurentis got financing to keep producing movies, given his very spotty track record.
Dino had some big successes that kept him afloat.
You make this movie sound awesome af tbh. And I love the description of the army dude as a "cigar chomping Ahab."
It's 100% accurate. A really badly written character.
Wait ... NO STEAK KNIVES!? Harumph! That's a deal breaker for me!
Buy your own cutlery, dude. 😉
Did you know the outrageous officer played by Samuel L. Jackson gets killed by Kong in Kong: Skull Island the SAME way that John Ashton does in King Kong Lives?
Yep. Saw both movies. 😊
1:07 The way how that film was sped up, it made King Kong look like the animated one in the 1930's.
9:20 I remember seeing that in school back in the day.
The speeding up was to get everything in without a copyright strike.
@@terrytalksmovies I see. The "speeding-up" makes it fun (not to mention funny) to watch a clip.
I might as well clarify that the movie poster was actually in back of a Scholastic magazine that we students used to get in school. It was uncommon for such advertising to appear in that magazine.
That movie was a box-office bomb 💣
Since when did that matter?
Never saw King Kong Lives! Like a lot of people, the '76 version put me off that strand. Sounds like they could have gone the "It's the Fantastic Voyage but they don't shrink" route.
It works as silly fun if you can watch it at that level
@@terrytalksmovies So very much like Fantastic Voyage, then :)
Cheers Terry! Another great video.
That's two things to add to my bucket list. Watch this film and eat a Crocodile.
Ooh, have you done a review of that odd Oz eco-horror flick with the dead Manatee? Last Weekend or similar title? Please tell...
Not yet but I do have Long Weekend, so maybe.
Terry, you need to get t-shirts made to sell that say “That works for me”. It can be your catchphrase!!
I need to get merch done.
@@terrytalksmovies yes! I am interested in buying some.
@@terrytalksmovies I would buy that t-shirt in a heartbeat.
@@terrytalksmovies Branded 3-D glasses?
@Lee Bronock 3D glasses are so 2012.
Georgia? Crocodiles? Au contraire, mon Cher. Alligators. Swamp alligators. And, yes, they are quite tasty.
Yep. Snake, kangaroo, emu, crocodile. All tasty AF.
Woah I just watched this a couple months ago too crazy we watched it around the same amount of time what are the odds
Synchronicity! The Umbrella release is really good, too.
I love comments that something, like crocodile, "tastes like chicken". How much like chicken? Fishy chicken? Chicken and biscuits? etc. Just a weird random thought. Cheers!
Croc does taste like chicken. I also swam in a tank with an 800 kg saltwater croc in Darwin on the same trip.
Terry: The 1976 (original) was bad enough. You mentioned “suspending one’s believe” on the plot of the sequel. The way you describe this cinematic oddity…my “suspension of belief” is that Dino De Laurentis actually green lit this project.
OK, if I can find it online, I’ll give it a go!
The silliness is the secret sauce here. It has the same gonzo vibe as some of the Japanese kaiju movies of the 1960s.
@@terrytalksmovies I guess you’re right. There’s some demented reason I love watching Toho schlock.
Given who you are you probably know this already, but there actually was a Queen Kong movie. It's... something.
If I say it's a 1976 'parody' starring Robin Askwith that probably tells you everything you need to know.
Robin Aswith was a... unique personality.
King Kong 2 is WORLDS better than Queen Kong (1976).
That's a low bar. Queen Kong is an utter turd.
