The stop motion is top notch. Not too hard to suspend disbelief.
I didn't realize this franchise was this old. I only saw the 1998 Disney version, had no idea this even existed!

I know that this movie isn't a sequel to king kong 1933 or son of kong but it still feels like it's part of the same universe and it was made by the same creative team as kong. So kong kinda has his own trilogy if you think about it.

Problem with mighty joe young, think he’s owned by Disney 🙁
This was Gene Siskel's favorite movie as a child. And I whole hardly disagree with the burning orphanage scene. It did pack a punch! I thought that he was going to die, but instead, he got redeemed in front of those who wanted to shoot him. Kudos to Willis O'Brien, Ray Harryhause, Pete Peterson & Marcel Delgado.
Even though this was Ray Harryhausen's first movie the stop motion is amazingly fluid
This was always my favorite giant gorilla movie. He had a happy ending despite humans trying to exploit him. Kong and son never asked for the horrible things that happened to them. Neither did Joe but at least he had an advocate to save him.
And at least Joe didn’t die unlike Kong and his son
While the burning orphanage does feel kind of random, I think it serves more of a purpose than drumming up sympathy from the audience. In-universe, Joe is on his way to being killed because the world now sees him as a dangerous animal, but then he commits this act of heroism. Essentially, the inmate on death row saved children while being led to his execution. This is what ultimately turns public opinion in his favor.
Sure, it could have been worked in a bit more organically, but I wouldn't call it totally hollow.

@@mariovazquez4436 it’s actually a lot better than people think, it’s s a pretty sweet film overall and features in my opinion the best gorilla suit ever courtesy of the great Rick Baker and his team.
@@mariovazquez4436 While the remake isn't a 'great' film nor one of Disney's best, it's still a solid remake. Better the original in my opinion. Charlize Theron as usual gives a good performance. And yes Rick Baker's gorilla suit looks impressively convincing. Even more than his suit in King Kong '76. Also I really love James Horner's score.

I’m some ways I feel like Mighty Joe Young is a sequel to King Kong and Son of Kong cause of how similar they are and with who works on this movie. My theory is the character Robert Armstrong plays in the movie is Carl Denham but he changed his identity because in Son of Kong he was being sued due to the events of King Kong and that’s why in Mighty Joe Young he decides to help them take Joe home cause he doesn’t want to make the same mistake as he did with King Kong
No emotional stakes to a burning orphanage? What kind of monster are you? If dead children don't move you, I'm not sure I want to be friends. Kong has the better dinosaurs, but Joe is the superior movie, a masterpiece of stop motion, forced perspective, back projection, every trick known to legends of the artform. Bravo!
Watch this movie many times as a kid. Great movie!

Yeah, it's one of the good remakes.
The burning orphanage segment brought me to tears as a child. My mom's had to turn the TV off.
Its great. Totally bought it as a kid. How can you not feel for Joe. And he gets a happy ending. OB had a sad career after make one of the greatest movie in Hollywood history.
The first time I saw Mighty Joe Young was on Thanksgiving when I was little. Joe was a real character in that he was very expressive with his face and eyes. I remember laughing and gripping the chair during the action scenes.
The tug-o-war scene with ten strong men was funny and an exercise in futility because Joe was stronger than all of them. The little close quarters fight between Joe and Primo Carnera was a little silly but memorable.
The scene when Joe goes on a drunken rampage in the nightclub was excellent.
The fire at the children’s home seemed a little bit placed for convenience but it was a pretty intense scene. I remember crying because Joe did all that he could to save the little girl and getting hurt in the process. He was a hero in the truest sense.
Actor Nestor Paiva played one of three men who get Joe drunk.
Mighty Joe Young deserves 4 stars in my humble opinion because it was not boring.

I never thought that the Mighty Joe Young movie I watched was actually a REMAKE of that classic movie.
You need to review the other Harryhausen giant monster movies. Even Cloverfield. Maybe narrate some Kaiju related books like Operation Red Dragon.

I absolutely love this movie, and great review, but with the burning orphanage, I always got the impression that it was connected to the plot as a way for Joe to redeem himself from the police. They were after Joe to put him down, and then he saved the kid in the burning orphanage. After that, it was showed that he was alive and well and back in his homeland. After he saved the kid, they had the opportunity to put him down but they didn't. So that would give the impression that they didn't put him down because of the heroic act that he did at the burning orphanage. And if that's the case, then it was connected to the plot since that burning orphanage scene was what saved him from being caught by the police and put down. So that was the reason for the burning orphanage scene.
If Mighty Joe Young counts on this channel, then I am counting the days until Tremors. :D

Was always a favorite of mine -- was the spiritual brother to Kong and in many ways his kinder and more empathetic side. This always appeared on the Thanksgiving Kong creature marathon and was a yearly ritual for kids in the late 70s and early 80s. The remake wasn't half bad and Ray (who did most of the animation of the original MJY) must have endorsed it, since he appeared in it (if I recall correctly).
If I recall correctly, they reused one of Fay Wray's screams during the nightclub rampage.
One of my favorite childhood movies ! Still holds up well today - better than some modern creature features imho..!

I saw MJY after seeing King Kong and Son of Kong- I just KNEW he was going to die.at.the end, I was just thrilled when he reached end credits alive. The greatest Harryhausen flick ever!
Incredible stop motion work in this one. Definitely better than the remake from the 90s. However that one wasn't too bad as well either.

This film looks like an incredibly fun time that any Kong fan or otherwise could get a kick out of, and I might do just that if I get the time. However, there's something interesting I noticed about this (and don't read if you don't want a bunch of random theorization):
This film looks a lot like it inspired an episode of Ultra Q, the series that spawned Ultraman. In that episode, a wrestler adopts a size-changing crocodile called Peter (what can I say, the show is wacky) and is pressured to make money off of his friend (parallels!) on top of being pressured by life problems and whatever else. Eventually he has to let Peter go when a nearby forest catches on fire (more parallels!). The wrestler's name? Joe. I can't help but wonder if Eiji Tsuburaya, a huge fan of Kong, saw this very film and decided to make an episode of his new show around it. We may never know, but if it was, it's fun to know that this movie inspired another special effects master.

I always liked this movie and always regarded it as them going back and showcasing how far they had come with the medium since King Kong. Even by 40's standard it was pretty good animation.
I need to see this film at some point. The effects look downright amazing!

Just like Tekkaman Blade has become an honorary member of the Mecha Genre, the movie should absolutely be an honorary Kaiju movie, despite not featuring a Giant Monster.
Joe is a gaiant monster tho... he's at least as big as the Son of Kong

Slightly off topic, but for those that don't believe in the Mandela effect, this is an example. Mighty Joe Young was one of my faborite movies as a kid. The thing that set Joe apart visually from Kong was that he was a white gorilla. There was significant controversy over Joe's fur color in the '98 remake. I read multiple articles about the director justifying the change. The scenes just shown are basically the same as i remember, but look quite strange with a dark colored Joe.
I think your Mandela feeling is from confusion; you've got Joe mixed up with Kiko, the Son of Kong. Kiko was about the same size as Joe and could be seen as a protoptype or rough first pass at a giant gorilla with more character and a sympathetic story. Kiko DOES have white hair; Joe only looks like he has white hair because he's lit differently than Kong.
@@christopherwall2121 I'm going to watch the original again. I've read the synopses and watched the trailer and clips. My memory is that Joe turns white from the nightclub fire, but that takes place in Africa, not Hollywood, in what i remember. You could be correct, but i can assure you thay the Mandela effect is very real. Some of it is faulty memory, but some of it is that people from different pasts are experiencing the same present. It's a quirk of quantum mechanics that physicists don't like to talk about.
I think This movie deserve a Five Star review more, Heck This movie did won an Oscar. It's does help it to not be a rip off, King Kong (1933). This movie is so much fun to watch.
Hopefully you get the chance to take a look at the Disney remake of Mighty Joe Young, which is also amazing.
IMHO This was a far far better movie than King Kong... and if you do not feel the emotion of rescuing orphans... I have no words. You call it a "been there done that" story.. but you completely overlook the simple fact that this one "DID IT" LONG LONG AGO...(70+ years ago infact) so while you may have seen such themes.. many of them were done here FIRST. Chief among them being making the "monster" the Hero of the piece. this was groundbreaking in its day.

Terry Moore was hot. It used to be understood that monster films required a little cheesecake for the predominantly young male audience. This perfect big screen formula has been lost. Marry me Kumi Mizuno!

I loved the 98 version growing up, each version has amazing special effects, but I feel like the story of the remake is a bit stronger due to the more likeable characters
Speak for yourself the lion scene was awesome.
I think it's much different from King Kong. It has heart, which King Kong really didn't have. There wasn't a true relationship between King Kong and the girl; it was mostly a "monster" movie. Jill is delightful. She is sweet and innocent rather than glamorous, not much more than a child. They have a unique relationship of loyalty and protection of each other. I think the orphanage scene becomes the reason they are able to actually get him back to Africa safely and restore his tarnished public image after the nightclub fiasco.

Can't wait for you to do the remake you're probably not going to say good things about it but for me I think it's a great companion piece with this original movie also imagine if we did mighty Joe Young but in the monster verse like what we could say he's like a lesser version of King Kong different species but still as strong and powerful but smaller that'd be awesome

I remember watching Mighty Joe Young on tv one Saturday afternoon when I was a kid. I thought it was a good movie.
How do you get away with footage from the movie while doing reviews? My review of Godzilla 1998 got blocked in the US for that.
The Tug a war with the strong men is great. I would love someone to redo that seen with strong men today. Maybe the Rock go for a swim.

The orphanage fire scene was my favorite part of the movie as a kid ("Save the baby, Joe! Go on, Joe!").
The fact that Jill has to tell the reluctant Joe to go up the tree instead of Joe going up on his own, gives this a realism that the updated Disney Joe lacked - that animals are terrified of fire.
This gives Joe a true character arc; not only does Joe save the the child, he rolls on top of her to protect her from the collapsing building, thus saving the child, and himself from the death warrent he was escaping.
This is not a polished film as the update, of course. The new Joe is a wonder in animation, ecology, and is totally adorable.
The original Joe is definitely rough around the edges, literally and figuratively. He has no problem pounding on and tossing around some lions, whom he possibly perceives as a threat to Jill.
Anyway, the 1949 Joe was a favorite of ours on the Saturday late-night creature-feature shows. 🩷 🦍
Imma say it: This is a better film, narratively, than King Kong.
I disagree with literally all of your criticisms.
For as legendary as King Kong is, it's nothing but eye candy. And that's fine. But it's a more base viewing experience. It's a classic - one of THE classics. But it's more dated in many aspects that MJY is, and only becomes interesting once they reach Skull Island.
Mighty Joe Young has more heart, better characters, and more meaty narrative, and one of the best stop motion creations in all of film.

While this movie is vastly inferior in comparison with "King Kong" and often downright corny, the special effects are absolutely amazing! The movie was done 16 years after "King Kong", and I don't think that the available technical tools had become that much more advanced and sophisticated. But the giant Joe- Young gorilla looks surprisingly natural and the movements are less choppy! I would've liked the original Kong much better, if the Kong puppet would've looked more like and moved like the Joe-Young puppet. I like the 1933 Kong movie for many reasons - but I don't think that the original Kong puppet looked amazing. My young son thought it was some kind of funny looking teddy, and I always wondered why it hadn't been possible to come up with a more natural look. The first director who actually achieved that, was Peter Jackson. His mo-cap Kong looks amazing - even after 20 years! Legendary's Kong doesn’t look as good as Peter Jackson's Kong.

I made my daughters (just kids at the time) watch the original, over the disney re-hash.... having seen both films, they loved the original, more.
