I have a LOT of nostalgia for this one. Saw it in theaters as a kid!
Me too!!! But...What’s next? Rampage? Yongary? The Host? Pulgasari?
So did I, but I was born after this came out. I too think that this movie is underrated and I think it is one of my favourite movies released by Disney besides their princess stories.
Thank you for listening
Same, I lost my shit with this movie, this and Dinosaur were my all time favs at the time.
I do too I wish Peter Jackson’s King Kong used similar special effects techniques to this one but cgi became more prominent
I'm glad this film isn't being slept on anymore. It really is a charming film that holds weight even today.
"The always-reliable Bill Paxton." Yes, indeed. RIP, Private Hudson.
It's an emotional remake with a good story in production and effects with Charlize Theron and Bill Paxton how can you not love it
This was one of the last dying breaths of practical effects.
the JW movies are starting to bring it back
@@GojiWars I hope they continue to do so, and not be afraid of the audience reaction, fallen kingdom had some amazing animatronics but covered them with CGI unfortunatly, especially the indoraptor who looked incredible and didn't CG at all.
@@Megaspinosaurusrex well, there was a leak for a new animatronic for dominion of the giga, (it was already confirmed) and it looks incredible for a low quality image
@@GojiWars That's amazing! Can't wait to see him in action in the movie.
There's still hope. Like 2016's The Void. But the last big studio practical effect film was Jurassic Park 3, and to me it was animatronic's peak.
The ending part of Joe saving kids in the remake has more weight than the original ending in that it doesn't feel as it came out of nowhere
Joe is basically the family friendly version of Kong
As a baby the Mighty Joe Young remake was my King Kong before I watched King Kong. It remains such an impressive film & holds up with special effects & story. Always found it underrated.
I used to see the trailer for this all the time on my Disney film VHS tapes but never got around to actually being able to watch it.
That "MIGHTY JOE YOUNG" narration is stuck in my brain.
Yeah, the Score is really beautiful. Revisited it not too long ago and enjoyed it thoroughly. RIP James Horner.
I can’t describe how much this movie hits me with some feels, the music is especially my favorite thing about this movie
RIP Bill Paxton.
By the way, I would love to sit next to a gorilla and just chill eating bananas.
The effects looks incredible, they barely aged, way better than a certain CG iguana released the same year.
I agree.
Safe to say, this movie was a good sized chunk of many people here's childhood. Myself included.
Man, these effects are amazing, specially for 1998, that Gorilla really looks authentic, almost like a real a one, they really nailed the character design.
A surprise to be sure, but a welcome one!!! I enjoyed this Mighty Joe Young quite a lot, thanks strength of its practical effects, the wonderful score of James Horner, the charm of its two leads and the cozy 90s feel this has.
As soon as I saw the title, I just knew I needed to see this, my favourite Disney film. I absolutely adore this film, the emotions given to Joe. The relationship between Jill and Joe. His reaction to seeing the killer of his mother. The Amazing and emotional scene on the ferris wheel. I cry every time, when I was a child and still to this day. It's main soundtrack "Imba wembo" gets me crying each time. The effects are ageless and absolutely great even today. This film is just perfection.
The chase between Joe and Gregs trackers in the trucks was always one of my favorite action scenes as a kid! So propulsive! Dare I say a kids movie equivalent to a Mad Max car chase haha.
God I loved this movie when I was a kid! This film is SO GOOD!!! And yet just sucks that the film never got the recognition it deserves!
The Gorilla in this movie looks so amazing. They did an awesome job with it
I always thought that the practical effects for this Joe film is just as good as Jurassic Park’s effects.
The effects look great! I wish effects like these were more common today.
Imagine if the 2005 King Kong used similar effects man it would have looked even better
@@cheetahluv210 Both look infinitely amazing of course! King Kong looks infinitely amazing! So does Mighty Joe Young of course!
The special effects for this movie are timeless!
For me the best part was Ray Harryhausen's implicit stamp of approval by cameoing along with Tracy Moore.
I had no idea this was a remake! And now it makes me smile all the wider because not only did I love this one as a kid, it's another of the rare gem that is the "Remake Better than Original".
And it featured Bill Paxton! What's not to love?
Man I can’t believe these special effects look so good while Godzilla 1998 look terrible and this came out in the same year as that movie.
I always thought the FX in Godzilla are one of the few things that did work in that movie, but they haven't aged nearly as well as these.
@Rando Yaguchi I personally think practical effects in Godzilla 98 looked good, but the CGI looks super unconvincing imo.
Well, one of the reasons Godzilla 98’s special effects are worse is because for Mighty Joe Young they had reference. He is a gorilla so they studied gorillas. But with Godzilla, no animal exists today that looks like Godzilla so they didn’t have any reference.
I thought 98's Special Effects were fantastic aswell of course!
@@Assassin199410 the effects in Godzilla 98 may have looked good for its time but I personally think they aged horribly.
A true hidden gem. Happy I grew up on this film.
The effects are incredible here. Rick Baker was on top of his game for sure, over 20 years after the 70s King Kong.
I saw this years ago when I was a kid. The creature effects are SO GOOD I need to revisit this one
Woah, these special effects are top notch!
I'm really glad you mentioned James Horner's score.
I'm glad that one of my childhood films was here. Good times. 😌
This one takes me back, it still holds up, and that score is just great.
Thanks, for mentioning the score by the late James Horner. It's one of his scores that not only conveys the emotions and themes of the film, but it's early enough in his career where he's not repeating previous scores like he did as time went on. Charleze Theron, has kids of her own now, two adopted daughters from South Africa, so I wonder if she's shown this to them, yet?
I always had a soft spot for how cool and realistic looking this suit was
This was one of the many films of my childhood and one of a few that fueled my interest in gorillas.
Yay!!! This movie is so often forgotten! I never hear anyone talk about this film even though I am a huge fan of King Kong... Probably wouldn't even know it existed if I didn't have it in DVD as a kid
Oh man I remember watching this movie a lot when I was younger. Loved it back then. I alwaysed loved how unlike Kong, Joe got to live by the end of his movie. Really need to watch it again.
The soundtrack in this movie is absolutely amazing.
This channel is one of the few where I'll "like" a video as soon as it uploads, before I even watch (though I make it a point to watch the videos regardless!). I love your content, I love kaiju, and I'm stoked every time I see an upload (I'm a subscriber). I grew up watching Toho monster flicks--mostly Godzilla movies--and as I edge closer to my 3rd decade I love them all the more. Thank you for your work!
What a blast from the past. I grew up on this film. I forgot how amazing it looks. It even holds up today.
These effects are incredible! Holy crap!
I can remember having a VHS of this movie when I was a kid
I saw Mighty Joe Young before I saw Peter Jackson's King Kong as a kid. Btw Charlize Theron is so FINE in this movie
One of the rare cases where I can say the remake is objectively better then the original, which is a feat considering how good the original was to begin with. Like you, I also grew up with this film and I think the benefit of it airing on Television and Streaming has helped this film find its audience over the years. It also makes me appreciate the effects of suit-mation as its now rarely seen in an American production, and if it is, it's not executed as well. Rick Baker's work on this film should definitely not go unrecognized and James Horner's score compliments the action on screen, and it's a shame that we won't either of their work on film again.....
Excellent video and fantastic work as always and I cannot wait to see what you'll bring in next! :)
I loved this movie as a kid
This is how I got introduced to Joe Young! I too prefer this a LITTLE bit more than its original predecessor (though I do have to give props to that for what it was able to achieve just the same).
Trivia-
The guy that played Mighty Joe Young, Tom Woodruff jr, also played the aliens from Alien 3 on, Goro in the Mortal Kombat movie, and he played Pumpkinhead.
John Alexander played Joe as an adult while Verne Troyer played him as baby. He often plays apes and creatures for Rick. Tom plays gorillas for his own company.
Just gave it watch this past Sunday. Still an enjoyable film to watch. Thanks for reviewing this, Up From The Depths.
This one's a childhood favorite!
I watched this a lot at my grandparents place. Such a good movie.
I love this movie. Don't hate me for it. I love Joe's effects and the villain scared me as a kid and I love, love the climax.
I agree with you wholeheartedly. This movie is a major improvement over the original. The visual effects are fantastic and the musical score is great
Thank you for listening
A childhood favorite of mine.
I loved this movie as a kid and the effects are just insane. Rick Baker & his team went hard on bringing Joe to life. One if the few cases where the remake is significantly better than the orignal imo
I LOVE THIS FILM! A childhood favorite of mine!
This is just as nostalgic as Jurassic Park and it was Great!
i was just thinking about this movie the other day. idk why but it always stuck with me
yes! I remember watching this as a kid!
To me, regardless of how it would turn out, there was always at least one thing to look forward to when you saw the words _"Music composed by James Horner"_ on the opening credits.
Still have the VHS in my collection. Such a great movie to watch.
NICE! Ape vs Monster review when?
I love this film and it is definitely part of my video library !👍🏾👍🏾
Had this one on VHS tape growing up, this movie was my childhood
I totally forgot how good the practice effects are in this! Will definitely be giving this one a rewatch!
Wasn't expecting to see this one here
I remember seeing this one when I was young (no pun intended) and enjoying it a lot. I didn't know it was a remake until many years later. Keep up the good work here sir. Love your channel. You have helped inspire me start a review channel of my own called Starlord of the Jedi. My first video review is gonna be on Godzilla '98.
As a fan of the stop motion effects of the original, I think the remake was surprisingly good.
Now it's time for the review compilation vid lol
I remember adoring this movie when I was super young.
This is 1 of those movies that's so good that even the Nostalgia Critic likes it.
Terry Moore and Ray Harryhausen were in the new Mighty Joe Young. They were in the scene at the party and Terry is talking to Ray about Charlize Theron’s Jill Young.
Has there ever been any woman who has aged as well as Terry Moore? She looks stunning in that scene.
@@OlympicLeprechaun I think Terry Moore was in the film The Aviator with Leonardo Di Caprio as Howard Hughes. Terry Moore once dated Hughes and in the special features in the DVD she is interviewed and she has an interest in aviation as did Hughes.
Yeah I saw them!
Oh the nostalgia..
I literally forgot about this movie smh love this as a kid gotta watch it again
R.I.P coconut pete you will be missed
I remember a trailer for this was on a Disney VHS I owned when I was a kid, and I really wanted to watch it, but never found it at the store... Now I need to find it!
I didn't know this remake even existed! :O
I watched this as a kid, liked it, and wondered why people don't talk much about it. The plot isn't too fancy but it's still compelling.
I saw this on Disney+, and almost all of my family watched it. My brother, Felix is afraid of live-action films because of how realistic they look, so he barely watched this film at all.
Still have my plush from the Disney Store. Underrated IMHO
I like this movie. I remember seeing it in open TV many times in the past and I think it still gets broadcasted every once in awhile.
Its enjoyable, I have nostalgia for it and the effects are still so good that there were times in which I thought it was an actual animal on screen. Like, Jurassic Park levels of good.
The classic I'm sure it's a fantastic movie. All deserving of its status but this remake should be alongside it as proof of special effects and the care put into it.
Saw the previews all the time but dont recall ever watching in full proper
Never heard of this one, I’m excited to see the final product
Great review. I was quite surprised by what a good movie this turned out to be.
Saw its VHS tape in my grandparent's basement hangout. Didn't think much of it... dang I missed out!
Loved this review, and this review actually reminded me of Galgameth, I would love to see your review on this Pulgasari copy
I like this movie as a kid cause he didn't die. Got tired of my monsters dying.
Actually never seen this one, and like you said, seems like the perfect movie to watch with my kid.
I completely agree with this review. I like the way the new plot did it, and of course the effects used to bring Joe to life are much better. I do like how they abstained from telling the same story over again, instead building on that to create a film that is equally enjoyable to the original.
Really liked this one growing up, every now and then I think about it but probably havent seen it in over 20 years.
When this movie came out i kinda looked sideways at it like “Ewww... a giant monster movie by _Disney?_ And it’s not even a cartoon?!” 🥵 and never gave it another thought. But if UFTD says it’s good, maybe it’s time i finally gave it a chance 😅
I actually watched this film quite a bit as a younger tot. While it isn’t anything mind blowing, it’s an adequate and serviceable family picture to keep the little rugrats quite for an hour.
Love this movie
I remember renting this one from Hollywood video!
I love this movie. Comedy parts are great
"Mighty Joe Hung"
-supermega probably
Oh man I love this movie
You should review the 1994 film Orochi the Eight Headed Dragon!
Very underrated, one of the few times where the remake is as good if not better than the original, and from a story, and character perspective, the remake improves upon the original movie. The effects really are timeless because it uses all methods both old and new to create it's larger than life character. CGI while effective is often overused and can look phony as a result. Movies with a mix of practical, and CGI effects like Might Joe Young, Terminator 2, Jurassic Park etc. often date better than many movie made after.
