My brother & I saw this in a theater in NYC, and about a year later we saw Michael Moriarty on stage on Broadway. When he took his bow at the curtain call we yelled "Q! EAT HIM!" and he cracked up!

Remake the movie and have it have a twist that the feathered serpent is actually benevolent to a point and is actually itself hunting down a similar intelligent serpent god that is actively attacking people and is framing the Feathered serpent. A good choice would be a Naga

Something that this guy failed to note - the names of both the monster and the main character begin with the letter Q (Quatzacoatle and Quinn), so then the TITTLE could refer to EITHER of them.

Before being a monster movie, Q is a Larry Cohen movie. The guy just really loves his sleaze and unlikable characters, and in this case he was able to frame it all around a giant monster terrorizing New York. Obviously Q isn't some kind of masterpiece, but it's entertaining and the performances in Q pretty much outshine any other American giant monster movie, which for me would put it at a 3.5 or 4 stars out of 5

“EAT ‘EM! EAT ‘EM! EAT ‘EM!” - Jimmy Quinn.
Gene Siskel and Roger Ebert enjoyed Q and loved Michael Moriarty’s performance.
I loved the Q monster. Larry Cohen made the last American made giant monster movie in the1980’s. New York City was the perfect backdrop for this film.
It was quirky and crude but it had some interesting moments. And a capable cast and a good score by Robert O. Ragland.
Another two movies you could review is Island Claw and The Bermuda Depths.

A bit harsh - watching the slimy crook Quinn get screwed over by all things natural and supernatural is part of the fun of the movie. He's the real star as you allude to, and the actor does a great job selling him. You sort of come to like him by the end, when he realizes that he has less than he started the movie with and just doesn't care what happens to him anymore.
Still a solid review though! I've been a fan of this flick since discovering it two years ago. It has a nice bluray release that's worth picking up if you want to see it in the best quality.

Q was massively hyped up to me before I watched it. I spent years trying to get a copy (pre-Internet) and ended up stumbling across a DVD copy. I remember being bitterly disappointed with it as a b-movie as I felt it was quite dull and was too young to appreciate any of the performances. Wish I'd waited a few years before watching it the first time as I feel I might have appreciated it a lot more.

Quetzalcoatl wasn't just an Aztec deity, worship of the figure may have gone as far back as the Olmec. Also, Quetzalcoatl is depicted allegorically as a feathered serpent, but also is frequently depicted as a man, particularly the wisest of all men.
My big question, though, is why a staple of Mesoamerican religions has taken up residence in NYC.

    • @JohnJ469
      @JohnJ469 3 года назад +1

That was the cult. As said, this part of the story wasn't really explored beyond a very basic "A cult is summoning a monster" way. It's a pity as some more backstory; Why are they doing it? Where did they get the knowledge? would have made a much better movie.
Q is a movie that could be remade as a much better film. Move some of the attention away from Quinn, fill in the backstory and a few other tweaks and you could have a good movie. All the basics are there, it was just the execution that suffered.

Larry Cohen is King. This movie rocks. I utterly disagree with your assessment. Moriarty is what makes this film half as beloved by fans of cult cinema as it is. Films these days don't feature such shithead characters like this in a matter of fact way like Q does. If ia film features deeply flawed characters these days, it's some deep character drama - which is great. But back in the day, genre and exploitation films had characters that were just...people. There weren't any attempts to make grand statements on the human condition or intricate character studies. They were just unique characters to follow around for 2hrs.
THAT is the charm of Q and Cohen films in general. He just PRESENTS Quinn to the audience and tells you "You either roll with it or don't."

There was a legendary exchange between film critic Rex Reed and "Q" Producer Samuel Arkoff (at Cannes of all places). Which has been repeated by many a critic down the years (notably Roger Ebert).
Reed: Sam! I just saw “The Winged Serpent”! What a surprise! All that dreck--and right in the middle of it, a great Method performance by Michael Moriarty!
Arkoff: The dreck was my idea.

However, Q without the Ultra isn't half bad. The actors are putting effort into their performances that is notable, and the monster itself uses the scope of the city to scale itself quite well. Oh yeah, and there's of course the brutal deaths. Some of those look like they could be from DOOM!

I enjoy "quality cinema," and I enjoy B movies about monsters, sci-fi, the old west, or gangsters. You cannot employ the same metrics in evaluating movies from both categories. In the recent past, I have been equally excited to come across beautiful letterboxed presentations of "The Seventh Seal" and "The Secret of the Telegian." (Both original length, with the original soundtracks.) "Q," not surprisingly, is a favorite of mine. When discussing charming genre movies like "Q," or "Telegian," you cannot apply the same academic standards that you would use in an analysis of "The Seventh Seal." I enjoy your reviews, and I generally agree with your commentary. I just felt like throwing in a bit of perspective today.

Eighties movies can be frustrating for me. So many look like lurid exploitation movies with all the "good stuff" (ie special effects, gore, and utter weirdness), but very few deliver more than a few minutes of true entertainment. Only a few movies, like Evil Dead 2, truly keep up the momentum of the wonderfully grotesque. Honestly a lot of monster movies are like that for me too. I find myself completely entertained when Godzilla fights weird creatures, but then bored into a coma by characters talking about stuff. If a movie starts to drag sometimes I'll just fast forward to the good parts.

No wonder this movie got an R rating! It's really sexual and violent for a film with Kaiju!

Regarding this review, going to watch a movie "with expectations" is a sure way to get disappointed. No matter how good the movie can be.
