YOOOO that’s unexpected. Your score for KotM is absolutely phenomenal. I’ll have to check out Colossal.
Oooooooooooooooooo MY DAWG! My friend said it best, any music you touch tends to be gold
You did a great job on this film's music (even if he didn't mention it in the review >:( smh how could you depths)
Your scores are awesome.
Bear, your stuff is gold mate.
I remember this film debuting and vanishing almost simultaneously. I will check it out.
Same here
The turns this film takes are surprisingly dark, yet if you're in the right headspace and are buying what it's selling - it's quite the experience. I genuinely wasn't expecting it to swerve the way it did. I LOVE it when a film can actually deadass surprise in that way.
Sudekis was incredible in this film - award worthy imo.
I remember watching the movie and thinking I knew exactly where it was going and then BAM, it hits that turn and really threw me for a loop. Wasn't sure what to make of it after first viewing, but every time I've watched it since I appreciate it more and more (especially the writing and the peformances). And hard agree on Sudeikis, movie is worth watching just to see his performance.
Jason Sudeikis gets really scary in this. His new show Ted Lasso has nothing to do with kaiju but is worth a watch. He basically plays the complete opposite of his character in Colossal.
This movie absolutely deserved better. Anne and Jason play their characters so well. One of my favorite scenes is when Jason's character snaps and attacks the city. You just see his feet but the sounds and Anne's reaction sell it so well.
Excellent analysis, as always! Colossal is one of my favorite kaiju films. Surprisingly, what makes it good is how it educates the viewer on emotional abuse. Seriously. Watching this film will help you learn how to spot an abuser coming from miles away. Colossal is more than just a criminally underrated film; it’s a deep dive into human psychology that honestly explores what makes us human and how we can fight the toxic influences in our lives.
Man, this movie slipped by quietly, what a shame.
Kudos on covering it and have a good one.
I had the distinct pleasure of watching this in a movie theatre. I hope one day all of you who haven't, will.
I knew it was Colossal as soon as you hinted at it. It's a drastically underrated film.
The last video from Up from the Depths for the yr 2020, and it’s one movie that I actually predicted last poll! Colossal with Anne Hathaway is a movie I’m hoping to see one day, especially since it’s a very different take on the Kaiju movie genre, using alcoholism and Domestic violence but framed within a Kaiju flick.
I think one of the best things about this movie is that it explores someone confronting both external and internal obstacles. We all have those. Gloria is a really great character because she's totally flawed and not a great person at the beginning of the film but she confronts her immaturity and alcoholism and by the end, we all are rooting for her. The elements of the film that explore her external problems like toxic relationships and workspaces are truly harrowing too.
I hope this is remembered as one of the great kaiju films. It's easily in my top five. maybe even three
I've literally waited over a year for this review and it didn't disappoint. Great coverage of Colossal's many angles. I'm so glad you dug it. I agree that it's criminally overlooked. It was too smart and trenchant to be a blockbuster, but for kaiju fans who like stories with teeth, it's great. A genuinely unique kaiju movie.
You sold me on this one. Gonna watch soon
YEEESSSSSS YOU DID FINALLY, I wanted so bad to see your review of this criminally underrated gem, I watched a couple of months ago if not last year, I pass it when got release and never heard anyone saying anything so I assume was bad, until I saw it and was blow away how creative the story was and the characters conflicts and resolution, and I love how tackle toxic relationships as well, all in a KAIJU film, thanks for review this one, I been commenting a lot here to see it you review it, glad you did.
Thank you for this one man. I never would have gotten introduced to so many awesome movies in this genre without your reviews.
When I saw this in the theatre there were 6 people in the theatre.
I was impressed and I agree 100% with your review. Excellent.
Thank you for this, Colossal deserves to be one of those unjustly ignored, cross-genre films that gains popularity through word of mouth.
I'm introduced to a intriguing monster movie yet again
One of the best Kaiju films in the modern era for sure! When you get back from your Hiatus, you should consider reviewing some anime with Kaiju like SSSS Gridman or Evangelion. I would say Attack on Titan but maybe wait for the last season.
Dude! I have been hoping you'd do this film!
I hope you do a review of "The Iron Giant (1999)", someday. I mean, you've already reviewed movies like the original "King Kong" and "The Beast From 20,000 Fathoms" (Movies about giant monsters that may or may not be classified as kaiju), so I think a movie like "The Iron Giant" is fair game, at this point. Plus, most kaiju reviewers very rarely ever mention it, anyway, so I'd love to hear your thoughts on it. :)
When I first saw the move, I bought it as part of my Kaiju movie collection regardless of what I thought of it, and my impression was, "Meh, it was okay." However, when I saw this strong review it encouraged me to watch it again, and I learned to gain a better appreciation for it!
T'was my older brother who introduced me to this channel. Glad he did. Also, you need to see the Korean monster flick The Host.
I’ve never even heard of this one. Wish I had. Would have seen it in theaters. Multiple times.
I forgot about this movie! I loved the concept from the trailer I'm happy this channel reminded me of it!
This has unlocked a memory I never knew I had
I remember watching this in an almost empty theater. I have to say, everything he says about this movie is absolutely right.
Pretty much all of the reviews you have made have been of movies I'd already seen, this is an exception, and its a movie that I will be viewing. Not often do I see a review that makes me want to actually indulge in said review's subject matter.
Yes! I loved this movie and you’re reviewing it, thanks!
Amen dude. Just watched it today, was not expecting this kind of movie.
As a Kaiju Fan, I FINALLY got around to watching this film, and DAMN it was good! It wasn't perfect: I felt the second act was a bit directionless only for the third act to abruptly reveal itself. HOWEVER, the creativity and talent on display are OUTSTANDING! Never in a million years would have thought of flipping Pacific Rim with humans controlling Kaijus, and using that unique premise to explore such complex themes. Definitely an original and overlooked addition to the genre.
I watched the movie one time and I honestly enjoyed it. I love how all monster movies can either be cliched up the ass or do their own thing with the genre and this movie really takes something so old and does something that nobody has really seen before. Hollywood may be running out of ideas but there is that 5% of Hollywood whether it be indie or mainstream that still gives movie fans new stuff. I agree with ya UpFromTheDepths this is truly a movie worth watching. Also the human characters are very relatable in many ways and you pointed them out in this vid which also makes the movie enjoyable.
I've heard of this movie, but never got around to watching it. However, after watching your review, I'm now interested in watching this film & give it the chance it deserves. Thx for posting!! :-)
Maybe the trailer for this didn't do it any favors. I definitely remember it focusing on the more comedic aspects and making it seem like some sort of kaiju romantic comedy, so folks expecting that might've got a rude awakening (unless they intentionally made the trailer misleading).
I thoroughly enjoyed watching this in theaters when it was initially released. Like you said very underrated
Saw this not too long after it came out, unfortunately not at the Cinema. It really impressed me and I'd love to see more like it.
This movie is surprisingly good. Glad to see you review it.
OK I had to pause the review just to go watch this movie. Wow I was really invested into it and it was really clever. I loved it so much!
I wholeheartedly agree with your assessment of this wonderful and criminally underrated film
I was always on the fence about this one but now I wanna check it out
Gotta put this on my to watch list
I saw this movie on a first date and can concur with your review -- outstanding work by Hathaway and Sudekis, and always good to see Tim Blake Nelson in anything.
That said, this movie is SO not a first date movie so caveat emptor to anybody looking to pick it up.
Checking this out with the fiance.
I have never heard of this movie until now
Oh I didn't know this existed
A five-star rating to finish off this era of non-Japanese monster movies! How fitting. I've never heard of this movie before, but after watching this review I'm interested in it. Of course, the darker tone is unique, but I also like how the transitions between the monster and human fights are shown. It reminds me of Godzilla: Final Wars in a way, where you had Godzilla and humans fighting their own battles at the same time, but I actually like the way this movie does it better. I might try and check this one out!
I wonder if there's going to be a stream this week....I guess we'll see on Friday!
I thoroughly enjoyed this film. I wish it got more attention.
Please review 'Big Man Japan' which similarly explores the kaiju genre in a satirical way, yet also delivers surprisingly deep and powerful themes about the human psyche.
Always liked the premise of the film. Shame I never got the chance to see it in theaters when I did
Omg only the first Godzilla and King Kong got five out of fives. Damn this movie must be that good.
I think there were a couple more. Shin Godzilla and the first Pacific Rim got that as well, I can't remember anything else
I'd been meaning to watch this movie for a while. If I'd realized it was by Nacho Vigalondo I never would have waited.
I missed it in theaters but caught it on Hulu and loved it, even got my family to watch and enjoy it
Great movie! Loved that one!
5 stars = Excellent.
review "The Host"
"The Host" is definitely unique with a great creature!
Yes please
@@voronOsphere The creature in The Host was a hideous mistake of nature created by man’s hubris and stupidity. A thing just barely surviving before waiting to die. I’m honestly surprised more monster movies haven’t taken that route with their creatures because it really is a fascinating way to approach the old tried and true monster movie tropes.
It's a film that was considered one of the best giant monster movies of the fifty's
Totally agree. I saw this a few years ago at an indy theater in Winston Salem, NC. Really good movie even if there were no Kaiju in it. Should be available to stream so, go see it!
I've always really liked Anne Hathaway as an actress.
Never heard of this movie before. Renting it now
I liked this one, it had a original plot and likeable characters
Been a while since we got a 5 star!
You should review Big Man Japan someday. That's another quirky take on kaiju movies.
Plz also do The Host and The Water Horse
How am I only learning about this film now?
I'm surprised that you didn't finish off the list with Rampage
I watched this at a psycho cinema film club showing at an Alamo draft house. It was a lot of fun.
Whelp, time to hunt this movie down
I haven't watched this movie, just saying, aside from that i have nothing to add to the conversation unless anyone wants to hear about how i'm getting my ass kicked by an orphan using a placenta as a weapon.
Taken you a while to get around to Bloodborne, hasn't it?
Took me one and a half hour to beat it in NG+ at LV 150 to beat that thing, Ludwig and Lawrence were way worse.
@@ArcaneAzmadi No not really, i got it a couple months ago and got the old hunters during my first playthrough, just the first time i'm doing it solo.
@@briansilva3765 Took me ages to beat ludwig on Ng plus 2, i even farmed in the horrid chalice dungeons.
Great film that really gave me a lot to think about. I really like how certain tropes where turned on their head, with the boyfriend being the one with his shit together getting tired of the main characters immature actions, and how getting rid of the "bad guy" didn't really fix the original problem, even if it showed that Gloria is on the right track. It was a film where my opinion of the characters changed a lot, and where I thought everyone felt real, even if the story they are a part of felt unreal. I do have mixed feelings about Oscar, as I felt he started balancing on the line between realistic sociopath and cartoon villian, but Jason Sudeikis' fantastic acting really managed to make the character work. (Also, am I the only one who thinks his voice sounds just like Seth MacFarlane? I swear, he sounds exactly like Brian from Family Guy!)
Great to see this film get more attention. Thank you for another great review. :)
Garamon meets Gomora
Now that you've mentioned it that way, I can't unsee it!!!!
Pleese review them
The way this movie was marketed was what turned myself and a lot of others away, however. The director marketed this as a straight up Godzilla movie, but said it’ll be a Godzilla movie that people will hate. His company got sued by Toho. I can’t remember what else happened after but he was such an ass about it.
I already forgot who but that person said this movie was bad because the kaiju isn't a monster and destroying buildings
I wonder if GVK will be good. I think it’ll be but, who knows.
The trailers for this movie did such a disservice. I wanted to see it from the first time a saw it, but it paints it to be a more goofy movie. It is actually very dark. That's the only problem I have with this review as it kinda delves into the spoiler territory. But as always your take is just what I want out of this channel, glad you took a look at this one!
Yeah, the marketing was terrible. Made it look like a romcom. Though in their defense the movie is hard to market. And yeah, this review does go a bit into spoiler territory, but I had to to cover what I needed to. I tried to spoil as little as possible.
@@UpFromTheDepths88 I think you thread the needle as well as can be. I loved going into the movie unaware, but if this vid gets people to watch can't argue with the results!
The trailer actually sold my wife and I on this. It looked fascinating, and we were fans of Hathaway especially doing this kind of meatier role. And I love genre bending, so dramedy + kaiju was enough to get my excited. That it turned out being much more to the drama end of the spectrum wasn't a problem for me, but definitely see how it would leave others cold, if the movie wasn't so damn good.
😶That... should be a franchise starter.
I'm very disappointed this movie didn't get more attention as it deals with toxic relationships, manipulation and extortion, addiction, taking responsibility for ones actions... hmmm.. maybe that's why it failed mostly, because people don't want to take blame for their actions, don't want to be told to get their shit together and that their misery is their fault. Maybe they just want a fantasy where everyone fixed their problems and this movie simply hit the majority where it hurts, their selfish pride.
I feel like the pacing wasn't the best (to thr point I believe is what it makes the replayability of this film a little bit difficult), but both the performances and the story are very well made. I remember that, when it came out, received a lot of backlash bc of the lack of the average "kaiju movie experience" (like, people actually believed this was a godzilla-like movie). Might check it out for a third time.
BIG BOI
Is this your first five star? Even a lot of the other really good Kaiju movies I've seen you review typically end up with four stars. I'm gonna have to check this one out
Nope. There have been a handful of 5 star reviews.
I’m curious why did you skip MONSTERS DARK CONTINENT?
Seeing these weird Western Kaiju movies is being a nice, pity there isn't many of them.
I liked it
I adore this movie! But none of friends think it’s as good as I do. While I agree with the 5 star rating everyone might not feel the same way. Go into this movie with an open mind.
I'm glad to have seen this in theaters when I did.
Problem we have with it is, it isn't strictly-speaking a monster movie. _It's all symbolism,_ except we have adults doing what children do - play pretend, and using their imaginary characters to grow, develop and resolve conflicts. It's the same reason why some people were alienated from the premise of Where The Wild Things Are, it's not actually a complicated plot, like the HASBRO adverts where actors are voiced-over by little children, can come off as very immature and pretentious.
Thanks to this review I want to watch it now I wasn't interested before
I thought you were going to review them
I'm sure he'll get to it eventually.
it would be heartless to ignore so many impassioned pleas for a Them review
Unpopular opinion time. While the central conceit of this movie is undoubtedly unique, there’s one element so tone deaf and oblivious that, once it hit me, I couldn’t unsee it.. and it severely hampered my enjoyment of the movie.
Innocent civilians in a distant part of the world become casual collateral damage in service to the first world problems and personal drama of two self absorbed, petulant Americans.
At first, I thought this was ultra smart meta commentary by the film makers...but unfortunately no.
Sad part is, this could have been very simply addressed by having the kaiju manifest in an American city rather than conforming to genre stereotypes and having them come to life in, of course, an East Asian metropolis.
If this was your run of the mill b-grade kaiju schlockfest, it would be easier to let it slide - but it’s clearly aspiring to be high brow and therefore inviting deeper scrutiny and analysis - and falling short as a result.
If you can somehow turn a blind eye to that element, yes it’s a fine movie with some great performances and intelligent stuff to say about toxic, abusive relationships 🤷🏻♂️
To me this is in the same ballpark as the 2012 film ‘The Impossible’ which focused on the inspiring story of a western family miraculously surviving the 2004 Indonesia ocean tsunami while using the devastation of entire local communities as window dressing. Admittedly Colossal isn’t as bad because it’s fictional and doesn’t reference a real disaster.
Hmm, interesting take. I don't think I quite see it that way. The innocent civilians being killed by Gloria and Oscar's conflict are supposed to be a not so subtle representation of the innocent people who get hurt by people like them i.e. alcoholics. But where as Gloria recognizes this and tries to stop, Oscar doesn't care, and even uses them as leverage. So I don't see the movie being callous about the innocents at all. Gloria even steps up to save them.
As for it being a Korean city, I always just thought of it as being an homage to the genre. Of course it takes place in an eastern asian city, that's where kaiju originate from.
Thanks for watching!
@@UpFromTheDepths88 yes your reading of the civilian casualties representing the harm that alcoholics or other toxic individuals inflict on others was clearly the intended message of the film makers. My point was simply that there is this other take...esp if you’re from a part of the world where foreign ‘intervention’ has had a negative impact and you’ve also not had any personal experience of the kind the lead characters are going through.
Keep the videos coming - it’s your stuff that’s recently inspired me to build my Godzilla blu ray collection! 🙂
Please do the live action Attack on Titan movies next!
I carry a certain amount of love for this movie. Would recommend to anyone who likes monster movies and indy weirdness.
Review Big man japan! Amazing monster satirw
I enjoyed this film but was unable to like the two characters that headlined it. But I suppose the themes of them being monsters makes sense that they wouldn't be people that lived healthy lives. I just wish the theme of resolving her own problems didn't stem from a character that didn't exist until she moved home.
Saw this movie on a first date that didn't lead to a second so maybe that might have to do with my feelings on it!
Personally 3/5 for me but I agree with your analysis of the film.
Characters don't need to be likable for movies to be good...
@@nope5657 This is true. My issue with the film is with the villains motive and how that lead to the main characters development.
Uncut Gems had an unlikeable main character and I thought it was a good movie!
Too odd too strange too clever?...thats what most people luv about movies!...so those are no reasons why this film wasnt really popular...
Loved your review. Didn't enjoy the actual movie. Jason Sudeikis' character takes too hard of a non-believable left turn that seemed intentional rather than organic. But the themes that they wanted to explore in the film were serviceable.
Excellent movie, loved it!
I really hope your review inspires more people to check out Colossal. It's an inspired, thought provoking original movie the like of which Hollywood produces all too rarely.
What the hack is that monster can Godzilla fight it or no ???
Lol at people thinking the movie you were talking about in the community post that it was rampage.
I wasn't actually a big fan of this movie. Love your reviews, anyway, Brandon & hope you're doing ok!!
