    I dunno why Oscar's "personality switch" was so confusing to you. He's a bitter, insecure man with control issues, he's an abuser and, just like all abusers, he initially comes across as sweet, friendly, generous, etc. His abusive and controlling side comes out when he doesn't get his way (when Anne Hathaway sleeps with his friend instead of him) and, also typical of abusers, when he realizes he's pushed others too far with "mean Oscar", he can lapse back into "nice Oscar" mode in an attempt to convince them that, hey, he's real sorry, that's not how he *usually* acts, c'mon, forgive him.
    "Nice Oscar" doesn't exist, his lovely gestures (giving her a job and furniture) are not genuinely meant as generous, selfless acts, they're his attempt to make Hathaway indebted to him. He wants her to rely on him, he has a need to possess, control and own others, particularly her because she represents something to him: her success secretly infuriates him because he's so insecure, "possessing" her would 1. make him finally feel superior 2. feel like him winning a trophy.
    Just like a lot of shitty people, he also feels that since he's been SO nice and generous, that she OWES him her affection. He's filled with rage and frustration over the realization that he's given her shit, but she sleeps with the guy who's given her nothing, not realizing that furniture and a job don't buy sex and/or love as though they're currency.
    He swoops down to take advantage of a person in a vulnerable state and he's pissed when they don't bend to his will. That side of the story was actually done REALLY well, a LOT of people have run into IRL abusive dicks like Oscar, but that kind of story isn't often told or isn't represented so realistically (which is funny, considering how UNREALISTIC the other half of the story is). I thought the writer/director did a great job portraying that abuser/potential victim dynamic and, I have to say, to all of the people who rolled their eyes at how it's a "feminist story", it honestly doesn't matter that he's a man and she's a woman, abusers come in any gender.
    Fuck, I just wrote a legit essay.

    I found Sudekis' change, while kind of sudden, made all the more sense when we saw what he was like as a child, and from what we learned about him and his family. On a subtle note, I think it's key to notice he didn't become this way, until after she was actively trying to stop drinking. On a more superficial note, he was the kind of guy who seemed to want to trap people, so they could be stuck with him in all his crappiness, and Hathaway had to actually fight her way out of the relationship she and he had formed,

    The point of Jason's character is that the nice version of him was a facade. His real self was lying under the surface, in the same way that he destroyed her project as a kid, and only when he realized he had powers, did he become who he really wanted to be. Which is a bully.

  • @smflauto
    @smflauto 7 лет назад +182

    Jason's character is supposed to be an abusive person. He is nice and welcoming at first, and then become controlling and disturbing. Remember when he was giving her furniture? He is trying to make her stay with him, kind of like an abusive boyfriend telling a girl he is going to change and to not leave him. It makes you think why his fiancé that is mentioned in the movie left him. Just something to think about if you haven't already thought about it, Chris.

      Do all abusive people suddenly turn into mass murdering psychopaths?
      I don't get how all of the people commenting on this video seem to have missed that part where he threatens (and does) killing hundreds or thousands of people just because he's an abuser?

  • @OrbGoblin

    I feel like you missed the mark on Jason Sudeikis's character. His character has a very thin surface of congeniality covering a deep well of volatile malevolence. The fact that he was so volatile was meant to emphasize what an unstable person he is. Plus each time his personality drastically shifts, it's in a response to something in the plot instead of just pulled out of thin air. He isn't just shifting wildly in tone randomly.

    • @Zodelyzo

      the real monster in the movie was alcohol and drinking.. and once again chris is not accurate as usual lol..or he missed the point of the characters.. Jason's character liked the idea of being a monster in control, especially when he got drunk,.. this movie is an A, and very interesting and unique story

    Sorry mate - you missed the point. The film isn't really about alcoholism per say, it's about abusive relationships and addiction. Every main character is dependent on something. You’re right for Hathaway it’s alcoholism, but Sudeikis is a bully, who surrounds himself with weaker people (and hates himself or it), that was spelt out quite clearly tbh. Even the secondary characters state this clearly… one of his buddies being a meek, compliant walkover, the other a straight up junkie. This is why maybe to you the sci-fi tone doesn’t match, and how the many people dying seemed like a subnote, but the Kaiju were merely used as an analogy of how the self-destructive quirks of the human nature become all-consuming and why the biggest problems most people have… is their own ones (i.e. the relativity of the title Colossal). I like you as a youtuber but lately it seems you’re in too much of a hurry to get your review out, rather than digest the themes fully, and I say that with respect . This for me is a film that could match The Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, in its mature and realistic approach to the nature of relationships. tl;dr I think you need to watch it again.

      dang i'm so glad I found this comment. it conveys how profound the power an abuser yields over the victim through Sudeikis' threats of mass violence. So many other more concrete stories about abuse fail to speak to those who have never experienced simply because they can't appreciate why it isn't always as simple as 'just walking away'

      Recently saw this on HULU, and it simply caught me off guard. The scene as both of them younger and he finds her school project was powerful and lucid. There are many currents that run through this film, I will watch again.
      Ironically your analysis of the film should have been Chris's..lol.I agree he was a bit lazy on this film, but the film is quirky, now Chris I felt Anne portrayed an alcoholic quite well for it reached deeply more then surface judgement
      ( if that makes sense..lol).
      One last note : I loved ' Isle of Dogs '.. Chris in his critique glossed over an important detail
      ( I won't mention for spoiler reasons) that really surprised me, I enjoy Chris's videos but agree with you.

    Chris - ask a woman who saw this movie if Sudeikis change really "came completely out of nowhere". Because while suttle there are definite Nice Guy warning signs to his character in the movie, signs that women who have experienced them recognise. Maybe not total psycopath but something dangerous and controlling beneath the "I'm such a nice guy" facade.

      I agree from his very first scene in the movie. Upon second viewing, he is trying to control her from the get go. I felt he was trying to control her life because his was out of control and he didnt know how to fix his own. Thats what I got out of it anyway. This entire film in based on metaphors that I feel is going to go over alot of peoples heads

      He is terrifying in this movie, and he’s perfect for this role, sudeikas is typically just some regular dude in movies, seeing his mask slowly slip away throughout the movie is just a treasure. This is arguably suideikas’s best performance of his career.

    I loved this movie! I think Sudeikis's sudden change in character is explainable. Like all that was just hidden, waiting to be unleashed. And it happened as soon as he discovers what happened between his friend and Hathaway.
    The dialogue, conversations, characters, camerawork, editing are all so well done. Also, almost the entire movie is metaphoric. My only issue was actually the fantasy aspect. I felt the ending was weak.

    I tought Jason's character was pretty dark from the beggining. I'll say why, but it's some heavy spoilers.
    ...
    He was superficially sweet, but he looked kinda possesive since the first night in the bar (when he snapped at his friend for almost kissing Gloria).
    Also, he had the habit of apparently discussing important decisions with Gloria while she was drunk and tell her the next morning when she didn't remember anything. That looked like a bit of a red flag to me. It seemed a bit manipulative, and we later learn that he was probably gas-lighting her.
    And also, all the presents he was giving her were a bit too much for somebody you haven't seen since elementary school, even from the first one, with the big TV. It looked to me that he was just playing nice because he would want something in return eventually (which is totally what he was doing).
    I'd argue his character didn't undergo any drastic change because he was like that from the beginning. It was a matter of paying attention to the small details.

    Just seen it (and loved it). To address the changes in Sudeikis' character, they do gave us clues of who he was earlier on in a subtle way: turning up at her house with a TV and saying "you don't remember us talking about it last night?" because she was drunk (hint, they probably did not talk about it), how he offers her a job even though he doesn't need a waitress to keep her close, how kept tabs on her after she left town... Not that inexplicable of a turn. Plus, jealousy, man.

    Oh, for ........Jason Sudeikus' douchebaggery was always there in this. It was hinted at pretty early on. It was subtle, but apparent. Did he need a mustache to twirl? Maybe an evil laugh? And no, not all alcoholics are haggard, slurring bums with their teeth falling out and flush with gin blossoms. They could look as beautiful and "normal" as Anne Hathaway in this movie. That's the insidious thing about alcoholism. The alcoholic can spend years, even decades maintaining the addiction without giving away anything being wrong. It's not like the PSA's and after school specials that were apparently your only real reference to how addiction works.

    I feel like maybe you didn't get it? I don't feel like it's just about her alcoholism but also her engaging with two guys that abuse her in one way or another. Her ex-boyfriend obviously abuses her emotionally - the second she is getting her life back together he is there criticizing her choices of becoming a waitress and is trying to get back into her life as he feels that he can no longer control her. Jason Sudeikis' character on the other hand is a much more abusive controlling type of relationship in her life - manipulating and threatening lives of millions of people and then, on the other hand, threatening her with her own life - beating her up to show the "world" which does not applaud his abuse - no one in their homes watching TV cheers when he hits her and puts her on the ground. It is a story of abuse to oneself and to others. That is why the tones change so drastically - abusive relationship are chaotic like that where moments of happiness can very quickly turn into moments of pain where one person hurts the other one to regain control over their lives, making them suffer for feeling good, happy or even hopeful about their future and that's why Ann's character, when she breaks away from both of the men in her life and fights back, becomes truly free and happy - there is no escaping one abusive relationship for another. You have to get rid of the threat one way or another and that's exactly what she does. I just watched this movie with my husband and the second Jason Sudeikis' character punched her and stomped on the ground killing hundreds of people and threatened her that this would happen if she would leave I knew it was about abusive relationship. How did you miss this? If you didn't why wouldn't you mention it...plus 4 minutes is hardly enough to truly understand this movie ALSO "she looks too pretty to be an alcoholic" is not even close to a valid opinion - my mother was and still is an alcoholic and no one could tell from the looks of her. Please... check yourself before you wreck yourself. Even though I know you will never see this but hey....I might as well try. F for the review.

    • @neemguy81
      @neemguy81 3 года назад +2

      Sudeikis' character was obviously abusive. However, I have to disagree though about her ex being emotionally abusive. He wasn't controlling or manipulative. He was tired of the alcoholism, broke up with her and kicked her out, that's not abusive. In fact I would argue it would have been more abusive to enable the self destructive path she was on. He definitely shouldn't have tried to get back with her. On that part, criticism isn't a form of abuse. It's an opinion. You take it or leave it.

I, too have been through many issues throughout my life in which I blamed myself and occasionally do to this today but I don't think anyone but you and this deceased legend have eternally put this idea of realising the fault is not with us who condemn ourselves but with the environment created around us that causes this blame we weigh upon ourselves. I have a little disagreement with film reviewers who state two types of tones to movies shouldn't clash. I love Korean films solely because of reason. Who's rule is it to say you can't have funny and serious tones in a film and it not work?
    A great example of my head is Metal Gear Solid, I know it's a game but I feel it's a popular piece of media because the tone is so unique to anything else.
    Kong: Skull Island is another, very serious with death and carnage yet it has some really comedic elements too.
    I just don't like this critic pointing out how a film should be devoid of any other tone but one. The best films we consider classics mix tones in ways you usual don't even recognise while making it fresh.
    Just my thought.

Over time my curiosity got the better of me and I went with my dad to the last showing available before leaving local theaters. I also knew nothing about the movie (hadn't seen the trailer) and ended up really enjoying it! Thanks! I wouldn't have seen it if it wasn't for your review.

    When you consider that Jason's character found out how much power he now held, it doesn't seem so weird that his nice guy facade suddenly drops entirely.

      Dude, your main point about having sex without triggering her powers is simply false. They have never had sex or even touched each other (except for two times when they actually switched bodies) IN REALITY. They did have sex and you could see her gorgeous ass in the white imaginary room inside David's mind. It was like their safe hidden place for a while.
      With that being said I can safely say that you didn't pay much attention to the show so it didn't come together in your head. This show required full attention to details. You are not supposed to even blink too often or you risk missing something and getting lost.
      Try again from the beginning (I watched the pilot twice to get it right) or walk away to simpler predictable stuff like Flash.
      Peace.

      Kiron is right, there's so many things you can miss in Legion. For example the first 2 minutes 30 seconds of Episode 1 shows you the first 15 years of the main characters life aswell as sneakily showing you the main Villain of the season.

    Great movie. As I watched it, I wondered why they didn't put more effort into creating a grand "first appearance" scene for the monster. I mean, the girl just heard about the monster over the phone, which seemed like a total lack of imagination. But later it turned out that they were saving the big scene for the ending.

    Hey Chris, I don't know whether you read the comments, but I wanted to tell you that rather than look at a consensus of reviews to decide whether to watch a film, I usually pick one or two reviewers I trust, whose tastes coincide with my own, and check how they've reviewed the film. To my surprise I've discovered that you seem to share a lot of my tastes. It's not 100%, but it's enough I trust you to recommend films for me. So thanks. (My previous go-to guys for films have been Jay Stone and Elwy Yost, so you're in excellent company.)

    I can totally see how you would think this movies tones are clashing too much but I loved it. it was such an interesting dark comedy and I don't think we get many of those so people just tend to think they are clashing tones but its 100% intentional. I laughed my ass off out of sheer uncomfortableness and just thinking about what a scene would look like to a random in universe person. this movie is amazing I highly recommend it

    • @SivTeaze
      @SivTeaze 7 лет назад +1

      I wouldnt call it dark comedy... its comedy 1st half then dark the 2nd half... I think the biggest problem of the film is the sudden shift tone of the movie.

    • @aubrey6220
      @aubrey6220 7 лет назад

      like I said I laughed the whole way through which I think the filmmakers intended. And I think the fact that she kills hundreds if not thousands of people in the first half kind of shows the dark comedy aspect of it early on. But that's all just my take on it

I will watch a movie then check out you review after to see if you notice the same details that I do and you always do! As we were watching this I mentioned to my boyfriend EXACTLY what you said about Anne Hathaway playing the most unconvincing alcoholic of all time. I also pointed out that it was crazy how thousands would die at her hands and she would just go home and roll up in a deflated mattress and go to sleep. Our opinions vibe in a very strong way and I know I can always trust your reviews!

    The thing that struck me most in the movie was Oscar's character revelation. There are certain moments in the movie - When she tells him to renovate the other part of the bar, when he tells his friend that she wrote better stories than him in school and when he tries to interfere when she was writing the message on the playground in Korean that we realise that he is not exactly complying with the image of the nice guy - supportive friend that we created.
    The childhood memory confirmed his worst traits - insecurity and destructive behaviour. He always saw Anne's character as his competitor even though she wasn't aware of it and his insistence on making her stay in the town was derived from his desire to be better than her and control her. Enmity was a recurring theme in the movie.

    • @malepig420
      @malepig420 7 лет назад +2

      it is though. The concept of Colossal is genius. just not the execution. I think that's the thing. So many people want to like it for the concept that they fool themselves into thinking it's better than it is.

    • @thomasjiang5410
      @thomasjiang5410 7 лет назад +8

      +malepig420 Ghost in the Shell is not better, and considering that you called Colossal "feminist man hating garbage" is pretty telling. While the movie does have a critique on toxic masculinity and a reverse take on the "nice guy" archetype, it doesn't imply that all men are to blame for Gloria's troubles. Nowhere in the film does she wallow in self-pity and she does take responsibility for the collateral damage that she's caused and it's clear that she is flawed just like the male characters in this movie are.

I think Oscar being a nice guy one moment and a complete ass the other should not be a negative because early on he's shown these traits. You had me at Anne Hathaway. No need to throw in Dan Stevens and Jason Sudeikis, stop digging, you already hit oil. I loved this one. So bizarre and hilarious, honestly might have to catch it again it's such good, weird sci-fi. This has so much flavor of a blockbuster sci-fi/superhero type film but a small indie flick. But it's also dark, and about being broken, dealing with metaphors of self-destructive behavior. 10/10
