I expected him to get his act together. That she was going to save him from his demons as well. But “he” was an analogy. He destroyed lives emotionally; example the woman’s who left him. Cartwright’s character. The cruel comments to his friend regarding his cocaine addiction. He “killed” people emotionally. He had no regard for the lives he destroyed. The monsters were both destroying lives but she felt remorse while his sociopathy reveled in it. There were no real human deaths. Again, it was an analogy. She finally understood there was only one way to stop his real life path of destruction!

the comments are concerning..I've seen this movie three times. he killed a lot of Koreans ON PURPOSE and he beat her down. he held Korea hostage to keep her in town. he was literally about to kill a child? and we should "help him get the support he needs?" no way. he worked his way in by being nice, becoming her boss, making her feel like she owed him and then threw a fit cause she fucked his friend? he never made a romantic gesture towards her. they never discussed being who they slept with. and last time I checked, when you give a friend of yours something, you don't feel like you have any right to get mad over who they have sex with.

    • @soulhunter59

Kind of glad I didn't see it. Just the ending seems lackluster and extremely shallow. By all accounts, her going to the corresponding city itself would be an extremely uncalculated and selfish risk. No matter what would have happened she would be at the disadvantage causing many deaths no matter what.

You're thinking way too much on the surface. Your comment is tbh just an emotional knee-jerk reaction to the most superficial occurrences in the movie, most of which are actually metaphorical. It's beside the point, but your criticism isn't even fully accurate as Oscar has been in love with Gloria for a long time (even though he did so in a fucked up, envious way), so it's understandable he was hurt by her sleeping with his good friend. You don't think he's made any romantic gestures? Such gestures can be more than just physical and blunt, you know. He made plenty of gestures, calling her special, offering her a job and giving her furniture - though those actions were clearly also attempts at controlling her and making her dependent on him. And his destruction of Seoul is a metaphor. Read this comment by Nihil Sustinet for a deeper understanding:
This explanation is actually too simplistic. The movie is about co-dependence and abusive relationships (the two are often related). As a child, she was very creative and talented, as shown by her stories, and the fact that her diorama is much better than his. He knows, even then, that she will have a successful life, and he wont. When hers blows away, he destroys it out of a desire to keep her in his life, to control her. When she sees this, the betrayal, by someone she obviously felt very close to, shattered her confidence and made her withdraw into herself, and creating the codependent relationship between them, the insecure abused man, and the shattered, desperate for approval woman. The lightning literally linking them is a metaphor for this. The monsters are also just a metaphor, and dont mean much to the story, ultimately. I would guess that was the last time she ever wrote a story that was inspired. She never did grow up to meet her potential, being held down by her codependent relationship, fueled by alcohol to help her cope. Her alcoholism is an extension of her shattered sense of self from childhood, or a way of coping with it. When she goes back, he had been watching her all of these years, probably pleased at her ultimate lack of success, seeking to control her more and more, furnishing her house, getting her to work with him, etc. the co-dependent relationship is fully re-established at this point, and everything gets worse, including the metaphorical destruction of Seoul. It should be noted that she is not totally innocent in this. she emotionally abuses him, as well, sleeping with his friend, causes him to experience the jealousy and betrayal he had felt for her his entire life, making him drink even more. the entire situation comes to a head when she decides that she wants to break free of this cycle and leave this in her past and go back to NY with Tim. Of course, he uses emotional manipulation, in the form of threats to destroy Seoul to keep her from doing so. Ultimately, she escapes the cycle, gains control of their relationship, breaks his control over her, and literally throws him away. One thing you got 100% wrong was when you said she scoffed when offered a drink at the bar at the end. Watch it again. She sighed, resigned to the fact that at the end of the day, after dealing with a problem that has been holding her back her entire life, after regaining her self confidence and gaining the courage to tell stories and do what she loves again (this is why she asks to tell the bartender a story), she still has her demons, she is still the person she became. In spite of herself, she wanted that drink. Her alcoholism is still a battle she has to continue to fight. which is real. we never defeat our demons. not completely.

Two things. One: I only watched this movie because I saw it advertised on this channel. Good job. Two: your explanation of her drinking at the end is incorrect, in my opinion. She is an alcoholic. After the crazy events that just occurred, she mindlessly walks directly into a bar. Not a restaurant or a bookstore, but a bar. She only realizes this stupid habit when the bartender asks her if she would like a drink. Her face at the end, to me, said that even though she had beaten this horrible bully and solved this terrible puzzle, she still had to deal with her alcoholism. She still isn't perfect, but she is getting better.

Why on earth would you search for an ending explained video if you haven't seen the film? Even if an overview is included, the analysis of the ending should be the far longer than the summary.

Thank you, I don't know how so many reviewers completely didn't get the meaning of this story. It was a wonderful movie about substance abuse and emotional abuse, its mind boggling how daft other reviewers are not seeing that she was in an abusive relationship with the men in her life, it can't be undermined how the "friend" was a jealous abuser trying to have control over her by using the robot to keep her where he wants her and then trying to placate her by giving her house gifts, the ex boyfriend was emotionally abusive and belittled her when she said she got a job as a waitress and laughed at her progress. Even the guy she slept with left her to fight alone. Thank you for this review.

Just watched this movie a few minutes ago and went to sites where reviewers were giving explanations, and I also was surprised to see that alcoholism was always mentioned but not the emotional abusive dynamic in Hathaway's character's relationships with the men in her life. It seems also the "cute guy" Sudeikis' character purposely didn't introduce Hathaway's character to is also bullied/emotionally abused by Sudeikis and it has something to do with his physical attractiveness being perceived by Sudeikis' character as being generically superior...and other reasons ofcourse

  • @LocalGodC8
    @LocalGodC8 7 лет назад +415

    SPOILERS ALERT!
Seriously, near the third part of the movie really caught me off guard, i thought this would be a "fun-comedy-kaiju" thingy all the way until the end (seeing the film trailer, it looked fun), but suddenly then the "Oscar" character became really really creepy, abusive and hostile towards the end of the movie, there's even a beating scene against Gloria (Anne Hathaway) at the park, i was super depressed when the movie took that sharp turn into nearing a "thriller" movie (Gloria and Oscar's fight at the house). The Oscar character guy is the kind of a person you don't want to meet in real life situation, seriously, that character was so horrifying and fucked up, kudos to Jason Kudeikis (the actor who played as Oscar), his portrayal of the dick-head Oscar was brilliant!

Came across this explanation by accident. Watched because I thought I missed have actually missed something as the movie's ending really needs no explanation. This was a good movie. A big surprise as the plot seemed so odd. Also, thought it was going to be a comedy but it was not. The monster aspect was really interesting way of metaphorically speaking to the heart of drinking and the damage it does. Writer was very creative and somehow managed to take what would be thought of as a really corny story line into an interesting drama. Really enjoyed it. PS. I really don't believe the ending was intimating that the antagonist in the story was killed. Take a chance on it.

+Mary Ann Chaves Yea I saw this movie as a metaphor for not only alcoholism but also kind of abusive relationships and her "killing" oscar was just symbolic of her conquering her demons and moving forward in life.

I came here to understand this movie because I thought it was about abusive relationships and was having trouble connecting the dots but it being a metaphor for addictions just sums everything up neat and tidy.

A similar story to this was done in the Godzilla animated series based on the 1998 Godzilla movie. The monster part, not the relationship crap.

Man, I loved that series (and still do). Also still like the movie (and I’ve been a fan of the old school Godzilla ever since I was 4).

Had never heard of this movie until I was on RUclips this morning searching for the song Colossal by Wolfmother, and found the trailer for this movie, so I had to rent it, and it was definitely odd, but I liked this movie quite a bit.

I don't know if you'll ever read this, but there's even more. It's not a coincidence, Gloria's work is a writer specially for internet (it's hinted), as she's unaware of the direct consequences of her actions. Oscar's character plays out as an internet troll also, giving the whole film another meaning about the effects or internet avatars that make anonymous, any kind of bullying and the destructive effects of that behaviour.

Yeah but that camera shot where Anne Hathaway is in front of the TV and her monster spreads it's arms tho... that was a really good shot.
Also Jason Sudeikis is really good in this, he plays the overcontroling creep so well

I downvoted because he called the movie a romantic comedy in the intro. Its not a rom-com and I don't understand how it could be mistaken for one if you've actually watched the movie.
