Nah it is scary cause it fucks up your perspective since if you keep going down how are you gonna exit physically since your just going deeper and deeper
I think it was too smart for people who were expecting a much simpler horror story. Hell, some of the symbology even went over my head, and I like to think I'm something of a smart cookie.
Jailynn's Inferno it's because ppl are to stupid to use their brain and figure thing out for them selfs. They didn't understand the plot, hence....negative feedback. Ppl have become so dumb it's painful 😖
By the time this movie came out everyone was tired of found footage movies which probably played a huge role in its bad ratings. I personally didn't like the ending but I did overall think the movie was pretty good. I didn't like the stupid decisions of the characters. And the convinent fake stone that only works once was pretty dumb too imo.
You know those fake stones are in almost EVERY piece of fiction involving the stone, right? They're heavily featured in Fullmetal Alchemist, as a kind of "prototype stone" that isn't finished yet. Thus, it often only works once or twice before it breaks. Considering the stone was supposedly man made through a scientific process, it's not THAT unrealistic that there could be barely functional prototypes. It's actually MORE logical than the idea that it was a one time fluke that just happened to work.
WARNING: The Freemason politicians in the U.S.A. worship the evil fallen angels also the fallen angel Lucifer (Satan). Abortions and causing people to get diseases through flu shots including other vaccinations are a sacrifice to the fallen angle Satan.
If you see a group doing a creepy ass ritual and keep going deeper into a place that supposedly only has one way out then whatever happens is on you 🤷🏾♂️
Fun fact: the description for this movie on Netflix is “A beautiful tomb raider and her crew hunt for treasure in the catacombs of Paris and find themselves in a hellish underworld.” Why they included that she’s not just a tomb raider, but a beautiful one at that, I really don’t know. Sounds like the Netflix description writer had a bit of a crush
@@joegoldb1erg lol she really is but it’s so funny to me cause it has nothing to do with the plot like her being beautiful I don’t think is brought up once in the entire film they could have even said “a beautiful, intelligent, resourceful tomb raider” to make it more relevant cause her being intelligent and resourceful is brought up way more lol
Is it just me, or is Georgie’s sin not that bad? It isn’t his fault that his brother drowned. It was the guilt and remorse eating him up that landed him there.
I haven't seen the movie so I might be wrong about this but Ima take a gander that maybe he was scared about risking drowning too so he bolted and tried getting someone else to help. This, his cowardice, ultimately leading to his brother's death? Just spitballing.
Georgie explained that the leg of his little brother was stuck under a rock (I think?) which made him search for help, but sadly, he got lost on his way. As a result he felt horribly remorseful that his little brother who was hoping to see him comeback with help, died alone and in despair. Georgie is clearly not in fault in this situation; he was panicked and scared, which explained why he couldn't find his way through the woods. To add, he was very young during the incident; he was surely not strong enough to move the stone. Georgie was not a coward. The unfortunate events of life are to one to blame, not this poor guy.
I feel the same about scarlets thing with her dad. It’s not her fault he’s dead just because she didn’t answer the phone especially if she didn’t even know anything was wrong
Just realized... Scarlett was actually never harmed. And she can literally do everything and she knows EVERYTHING. That stone must have given her the power before she had even obtained it
Lol these responses are hilarious but yeah I think that’s why he just walked off like that. In any other film I can see the guy sitting down for a moment to take in what just happened but obviously the holiday through hell moved him deeply enough to walk his ass to his kid.
The only thing I didn’t like about this movie was Scarlet, she was very manipulative and only really cared about her goal until they got deeper into Hell.
Not at all. The goal was to find the stone and yeah she cared about that but once they got blocked off she knew the only way was to get through the gates of hell. She was just the only one with a sense of grip on reality. She’s not manipulative she’s just the only one with common sense
Emy OwO it’s not fake it’s a real place, they ran out of room for bodies when a disease killed off most of the population in Paris so they started burying the bodies underground.
I just wanted to point out a few things I noticed you forgot to mention! (Not to be rude, but to be informative!) Anyway, in the scene when they first enter into hell and see the ladies singing, that scene is supposed to be the vestibule in Dante's Inferno. This is before the first circle of hell, and it is basically the tunnel leading into the first circle. It consists of two types of people: the uncommitted/indecisive and the outcasts. The uncommitted/indecisive are people who did not choose god or satan, and they only lived for themselves. The outcasts are actually angels that hid during Gods war. They were sent there and punished by having to sing forever, or something like that. Also, towards the end of the movie, when George is bitten on the neck, he is actually being bit on the neck by the Biblical character Cain. In the Bible, Cain killed his brother Abe with a rock. In Dante's Inferno, it was said that Cain was sent to hell and was turned into the weapon he killed, or betrayed his brother with. Therefore, not only is George bitten by a rock version of Cain (someone who killed their brother), he too technically "killed" his brother. I think the connected irony there is cool. One last thing, I found something interesting out about the scene that takes place after George is bit and Scarlett realizes she has to return the false stone to find the new one. When she is running back through the seventh circle again, she is pulled down into a pit of blood and hands. I did some research and discovered that is is supposed to be similar to the Phlegthon River in Dante's Inferno. Likewise, in Dante's Inferno, the seventh circle has a river (the Phlegthon) that is full of boiling blood that contains the souls of those who committed crimes against their fellow man. I think Scarlett is pulled down since a) she didn't answer her fathers call resulting in his death, so that's a crime against him, and b) she dragged a whole group of people into hell on a crazy quest and half were killed, which is another crime against man.
Also, that robed dude is satan. He has the face of a) a man who fell from heaven and suffered injuries, and b) an angelic baby. His face is like this in Dante's Inferno to represented his fall from grace. It shows how Lucifer used to be God most beautiful angel, but then his face transitions into deformity to represent his fall from grace.
So Cain (the rock guy) was the one who Scarlett easily shoved aside as she begins her trip to return the stone, and once more on her way back to the boys. Lol poor Cain.
BillyFreeTX THATS classic for Blair witch, I was talking more of the newer type movies that try to copy this type of film. Never seen troll hunters, will deff look into that! But Blair witch will always be number 1 for the documentary type
Thats scene where scarlet felt guilty when she didnt pick up the call from her father before he hung himself made me text my father and tell him i love him.
@@HeyImLucious well yeah basically but I think they meant like in typical scary movies where something is actually hunting them down like Micheal Myers.
@@bluntes almost as if the wardens of hell aren't demons but angels appointed by god. demons are the spirits of Nephilim which are trapped on the earth
I think what they meant was that their guilt and sins is what was really hunting them. It just took the form of evil and ghosts to hunt them down. They weren’t just attacked by ghosts because they used a ouija board or moved into a haunted house. This stuff appeared BECAUSE of their sins. It was their sins that was hunting them and wanting to kill them. It just so happens that the way it was done was through what looked like spirits.

This whole movie is a thrill ride and it's sad that it didn't receive too much attention because everyone was sick to death of found footage movies at that time
1. the trumpets that sound throughout the film are representative of the inscription earlier that says when the trumpet sounds the dead will rise. 2. the women performing the ritual all have blood painted over their eyes, which i think is indicative of them “seeing” peoples’ sins and judging them in hell. not entirely sure, though. 3. the mouths that bite at scarlett are symbols of her guilt over not talking to her dad. 4. When the woman in white attacks Benji, she shakes a stillborn baby at him. She likely died giving birth to benji’s baby. 4.5. [EDIT] Since Benji died on the “fraud” level of hell, it’s possible he abandoned the woman in white upon finding out she was pregnant, proving himself a coward. 5. Since Benji has a whole scene devoted to him being stuck, i believe it was probably a breach birth that killed the woman. He also freaks out about the singing women, pertaining to his fear of the woman in white. 6. Benji also is the one who gets his “cord cut,” aka the umbilical cord. 7. In the “above,” the mirror dusted over is silver. In the “below,” after scarlett replaces the stone, it’s gold. a property of the stone was that it could turn base metals into gold. 7. For a single frame near the end of the movie, scarlett runs past a symbol drawn in blood on the wall. it looks a little like : )-,-> i have no idea what it is but if anyone does know do tell. 8. Don’t blame Zed for walking out at the end. Dude lost his two best friends and his job because of some tourists.
Good job with making sense of Benji's story and an amazing job of spotting the mirror turning from silver to gold, watched the movie twice and saw this breakdown but it only made sense after I read your commeng
iamprodigyable Since Benji is killed on the level of hell “fraud,” i think that he may have abandoned her upon discovering she was pregnant. On the other hand, the sin might be tied to the guilt that Benji felt for getting a woman pregnant and indirectly causing her death. since George wasn’t actually the reason his brother died but was wracked with guilt and punished anyway, i assume it’s the same kinda thing.
See, you’d have to take that white robed cloak as a sign... I woulda stopped giving a fuck after read bout some shit about a tomb between heaven and hell. Tf a tomb gotta do with a nigga?
It frustrates me how so many people lambasted this movie and considered it "just another found footage horror movie" when it came out. I was intrigued the entire way through, and despite not knowing much about Dante's Inferno, I understood that the characters were descending into hell. (Honestly, it wasn't that hard to decipher.) I also see people complaining about the ending when the main character barrels her way through demons and monsters, despite the fact that: 1. She already explained in the beginning that she's a black belt and; 2. She's racing to save George's life and doesn't have time for Satan's shenanigans. People can do crazy things when they're panicked and desperate. I absolutely adored this movie. I'm so glad to find a video Analysis created by someone who actually understood what the hell was going on in this movie and the deeper meaning behind the film.
"I'm so glad to find a video Analysis created by someone who actually understood what the *hell* was going on in this movie and the deeper meaning behind the film." No pun intended?
Re-watching this movie, I think I can piece together La Toupe's reason for violently killing Souxie. When he is introduced to the crew, I noticed that he only mentions Souxie's name and no one else. "You shouldn't be here, *Souxie*" implying that he and her had a connection. I have a theory that there was a love triangle between Souxie, Pap, and La Toupe where La Toupe and Souxie were originally together. After he disappeared, Souxie must have went to Pap for comfort which then turned into a relationship. OR she coldy cut La Toupe out of her life and went straight for Pap without thought. Since the Catacombs is supposed to make one face their darkest sins, Souxie's greatest and unforgivable sin was treachery for abandoning La Toupe. Another example is earlier in the movie when La Toupe first appears. Pap is excited/shocked to see his friend alive, but Souxie says absolutely nothing, almost as if she is feeling guilty for leaving La Toupe for Pap but remains silent. In the scene where he beats her, the sin Wrath could be expressed by La Toupe's anger toward her for not caring enough to find him and for breaking his heart. He violently kills her for revenge and once she's dead, he disappears, as though he has passed on afterwards. He doesn't go for anyone else because all he wanted was to make Souxie pay, which he did with his own hands. That's my theory at least.
This is also reinforced by the first encounter with la toupe because he says “why did you never come look for me” (paraphrasing). Anyways, love the theory, I totally agree with it
She’s also the one who went to see if he was ok first. Maybe trying to relieve herself of some guilty feeling by inadvertently showing she cared? Maybe they went tunnel searching without pap and she left him and never came back that’s why he asks why “you” (she) never came to look for him. Ah I like this theory.
Also, La Toupe, like the "Guy who Pap killed" is the only part of the ordeal that beckons "the group" deeper inward. Nothing else but the apparitions of the past ask the adventurers to move forward through the trials of hell. The piano, the phone, the hanging father, the brother in the stones, and La Toupe and Pap's Sin are the only PEOPLE that DIRECTLY TELL the party to "go deeper". I'm pretty sure you hit the nail on the head here, 🤯. Also, the scar on Pap's hand is a burn!
One small correction about Dante's Inferno: He's not actually travelling into Hell to retrieve his lover, that's something that's only really implied by the sequels (Purgatorio and Paradiso) and worked into the videogame. He's basically travelling through Hell because he was wandering around lost in a forest until he got attacked by 3 animals, and saved by the ghost of the poet Virgil, who just kinda decides to take him on a tour through Hell, Purgatory and Heaven for no real reason :P
They aren’t sequels. They are part of the Divine comedy and are meant to be together not separated. And the journey is through hell then purgatory and then heaven. A continuous story. And it’s also a political slap in the face for the time. Quite funny.
@@temirab.5891 the whole thing really does read like Bible fanfiction in the most literal sense. Self insert OC, best buddies with a legendary poet, everyone he hates is suffering in hell, it even all goes off the rails and gets really surreal and weird at the end.
It is not for no reason, Virgil was sent by Beatrice to help Dante up to heaven. And Virgil says, like the mole from the movie, that the only way up is down. So they have to walk through Hell first

Scarletts father was searching for something that was always right in front of him...brings almost a sad perspective to the movie
Anyone could have been the stone. It was only through the realization and the experiences in hell she went through that she was granted the powers of the stone. Whoever was searching for the stone needed to go through a series of events for their "soul" to be forged into the stone.
I watched this movie for the first time today and when researching beforehand to see if it was a good film I noticed some pretty bad reviews , 38% on metacritics, 26% on rottentomatoes, and 6.2/10 on IMDb. This and Parasite. I’ve watched a ton of horror movies in my day and none of them really scare me, be it The Conjuring series, Japanese, Thai or even Hong Kong horror movies. But this and Parasite just makes me physically uncomfortable.
I don’t think the stone only worked once, I think Scarlett is the true stone, or at least the essence of it as she is the one who truly believes. When she heals Souxie the first time, she’s directly touching her wound, but when trying to revive her she never touched her head. And then again when she tries to heal George her hand is on his neck wound. It’s not her kids that heals him, it’s her touch. This is why we see her looking into the gold mirror when she asks aloud where the hidden stone is. SHE IS THE STONE. Also her name is Scarlett, which is the colour of the stone as well (which I believe to be garnet)
Its both: in Dante's inferno there's a fake philosophers stone with a single use, just like in the movie. And Alchemy had a big internal soul and realisation of truth focus, which makes the Scarlett gaining power after realising the stone is fake make more sense

There definitely needs to be a sequel where they find out that they're not actually back in their world, and they're in an alternate dimension. What's more unbelievable than everything that happened in the journey to hell and back, is the idea that they're back in their normal world, like nothing happened.
Maybe that’s Hell in and of itself, the Hell of having to return to “normality” of their own home whilst experiencing horrors unknown to the rest of the world

If I was with them and made it out too, I also would've been skeptical if I was in the real world. But I mean, idek if I or my partners would have the strength to go back and experience that "hell" again.
I think souski guilt is never looking for her friend. He said when they first find him "you never came looking for me". Perhaps he only told her where he was going and she never raised the alarm he was missing until too late?

Personally, I don't think they made it back to the Real World(TM)... I think they made it to "Hell" which is basically a mirror image of "Earth" but on the *inside*. Recall, Flammel's tomb was supposed to be *half way* between Earth and Hell (2:47). Which to me makes it seem like they, in fact, "ended" their journey "inside" the earth ... ALL THE WAY to Hell. I really kind of want them to make a sequel (As Below, So Above) where they realize this, and have to try to actually make their way back to the REAL Real World, not this "off" / "opposite" world inside the world which they got to in kind of an "upside down" manner.
@@jayllow01 and for the ending of the 2nd movie. Scarlett saves the two guys and ends up getting trapped and left behind. Due to immortality she's stuck forever in the catacombs
its an interesting theory but iirc they saw the unrotten corpse of flammel, went into some cave, and then basically went all the way back in reverse. So, if flammel is half way in, then the other half would make the journey thru hell complete
I like that for once it's not a 'everybody encountered some supernatural power and died at it's hands' sort of 'found footage' style film. It's nice that there is an actual meaningful plot, with characters, who make decisions TO SURVIVE. In that regard I guess you could call the film... Groundbreaking...
Souxie didn't violently kill anyone, she felt guilty that she didn't look for her friend La Taupe and he even said it when you first see him, he said her name and then mentioned no one looked for him and that she shouldn't be here. The violent version demon thing of him attacked her because he is her guilt and she didn't once say sorry all the way through Limbo. Benji though, I've got no frigging clue with the cultist lady.
Emily yes you nailed it! That's why this movie scares me. Hell is what our actions cause if we don't see our sin and deal with it instead of ignoring it.
The lady at the bar must have been someone benjie had a baby with. Thats why the woman and benjie kind of had a stare off as the woman walks away from the club. Probably explains why the same woman holfing a, baby appeared prior to his death
Leonard Hofstadter But how could he atone for that before he died?? Same with Souxie??? That was a violent ass death?? She didn't get a chance to atone before dying. Same with Benji,
@@KokkoiiMatoku they had the chance but they didnt do it. Benjie met the woman at the club, he couldve done it that time and atone. He coulve atoned then but he didnt thats why he died. Zed hadnt met yet the child. The other guy tried to help his drowning brother under all the bones. And the girl made it up with his hanging father. Thats why the 3 of them survived
I think that Scarlett wasn't actually the stone and the mirror was more of a metaphor for human capability. The mirror doesn't literally mean that she is the stone, but rather that through faith, anyone can do what the stone is said to be able to do. "As I believe the world to be, So it is."
Cristopher never seen REC, but got definite Grave Encounters and The Descent vibes. When they made the loop going through Pap’s preferred route, I kept thinking about the scene in Grave Encounters where they exit the hotel elevator and end up in the basement again
I hate to be this way, but Dante didn’t go to hell to save his lover. Dante’s lover sent Virgil to guide Dante on a life changing journey so that he doesn’t end up in hell when he dies. Basically Beatrice, Dante’s lover, is telling Dante to change his ways.
That is correct, Dante searches for his lover, but she is already dead, so she sends Virgil to guide him to cleanse him of his sins and that Beatrice takes Dante up to heaven after they pass through the seven circles of hell.
I just finished it and I know it’s based off the Dante’s inferno but my personal interpretation is that if you still have guilts/regrets , it’ll eat you alive until you die. Each person has faced a shadow and I believe the deeper you go, the more you see. I see it as a metaphor of the subconscious. You notice how the people who come to terms with it lived. It all makes sense
I was thinking that Souxie's wasn't violently killing someone but rather didn't help look for La Toupe after he disappeared, especially because Pap says they know which tunnel he went into but they never searched for him. I'm sure she felt more guilty than Pap bc he had his friend in the car so maybe she liked La Toupe romantically and that's why she never forgave herself? It also doesn't really make sense about the killing someone part bc all throughout hell they were being killed by the people that showed themselves to them, for example Paps friend dragged him into the car, and the girl push Benji down the tunnel. I don't know about Benji's either but I can't think of anything to explain the lady ( it doesn't help that we learned almost nothing about him but oh well)
I always found the ending so creepy as that Earth always seemed off to me every time I see that scene. I think that what they're on is a mirror Earth. An Earth that looks like theirs but it's not. In the movie they past through the center of the Earth and ended up in a reversed room in hell. They kept going down, but never went back up to where the original entrance was. Continued to going down until they found an exit. I think that exit sent them to an alternate reality.
This was one of those random netflix movies that I threw on just to have something playing in the background while I was playing video games. Ended up barely playing my game and this became one of my favorite horror movies. It is incredibly underrated. I think it didn’t get the attention it should have because it is a found footage movie, something that many people got tired of years ago.
There are a lot of little things this movie got right about the Hell of Dante's Inferno. Like at the final circle, when they are all confessing their sins, you can see their breathe. The cold reflects the fact that the final circle was supposed to be a frozen wasteland. Not to mention the fact that damned souls were frozen inside the ice, not unlike the people buried in the walls.
Their is also a good deal they got wrong. For example being burried upside down with your feet hanging out is a punishment, but a punishment for Simony. I doubt the French ghost sold a Church position in 2014. It's a nice nod to the Inferno but it doesn't make much sense.
Ryan Mehaffey actually that punishment fits because he wanted to get the treasure in Flamel’s tomb, which were most likely linked to the church and would then sell it, as what other use would he have for it? He was a Simonist and his greed betrays him several times in the film.
It really isn't very deep though. Despite correlating with Dante's Inferno, it's all very obvious and stays on a generic surface level. It's still a crappy horror film, that's trying to be smarter than it actually is and failing to even pretend it is.
Imagine if they didn’t close the lid to hell, 10 min later someone just walking their dog in the dark, BOOM falls right into that 9th circle

I wonder why this movie got bad ratings. I think the story and symbolism's were very smart.
Because people are daft and people don't like thinking when watching a movie. People like "logical" movies and movies that are easy to understand.

Honestly, George wasn’t even supposed to go down there.. he survives because there was no sin for him to rectify. He was literally collateral damage.
Ashtyn K McCurdy yes, you’re right

@@beanrat8631 yes lol. She literally pushed his head and it exploded. That scene happened so quickly but it made me laugh so much!

I ended up watching it for the first time ever like 2 years ago and was SO CONFUSED how I never saw it when it came out. I think it’s a gem.
1. the trumpets that sound throughout the film are representative of the inscription earlier that says when the trumpet sounds the dead will rise.
2. the women performing the ritual all have blood painted over their eyes, which i think is indicative of them “seeing” peoples’ sins and judging them in hell. not entirely sure, though.
3. the mouths that bite at scarlett are symbols of her guilt over not talking to her dad.
Dude lost his two best friends and his job because of some tourists.
dill pickle god damn I was trying to work out what Benji did to deserve what he got. That makes perfect sense.

Wait, how does someone having a stillborn baby constitute a sin? If you don’t mind explaining
iamprodigyable Since Benji is killed on the level of hell “fraud,” i think that he may have abandoned her upon discovering she was pregnant. On the other hand, the sin might be tied to the guilt that Benji felt for getting a woman pregnant and indirectly causing her death. since George wasn’t actually the reason his brother died but was wracked with guilt and punished anyway, i assume it’s the same kinda thing.

That's my theory at least.
i think so, because he only ever acknowleged souxie. almost as if he knew he was going to have to kill her. "You shouldn't be here.."
Devin I like this theory, it makes a lot of sense.
I was thinking that La Toupe (if that's how you spell his name) is Virgil in this movie!!!

Hollllllllld the F up.... Scarletts dad spent his ENTIRE life and drove him self to madness/commiting suicide trying to find the stone, Scarlett (though her dad, and even herself unaware) IS the stone. And Scarlett and her father werent on frequent talking terms from the information given.
Well spoken, my friend.
I watched this movie for the first time today and when researching beforehand to see if it was a good film I noticed some pretty bad reviews , 38% on metacritics, 26% on rottentomatoes, and 6.2/10 on IMDb. However for google users it said that 92% liked the movie, so I gave it a shot. I absolutely LOVED the film. It was terrifying, but intellectual at the same time. I think that the negative reviews took the movie at face value as another "found lost tapes film," but it was so much better than that. I love a good movie that requires me to think further. Thank you for the in depth review to further my appreciation for the movie!!

That exactly the ending “SHE IS THE STONE”
.n ... NJ ô

The ending hinted that scarlet was, all along, in pursuit of eternal life.
Well, pretty much the reason for seeking the philosopher's stone, isn't it?
@@Pajusa101 well i dont think she specifically wanted immortality but instead to fulfill her father's goal. She did probably know about the value of it though since she knew to apply it to her friends.

-I think she was just a nut job that didn’t let her fathers death go. At any kost

Hey atleast they can go through Hell again but with Scarlett having Potion of Healing powers also
@@jayllow01 and for the ending of the 2nd movie.
This is such an underrated comment
Souxie didn't violently kill anyone, she felt guilty that she didn't look for her friend La Taupe and he even said it when you first see him, he said her name and then mentioned no one looked for him and that she shouldn't be here. The violent version demon thing of him attacked her because he is her guilt and she didn't once say sorry all the way through Limbo. Benji though, I've got no frigging clue with the cultist lady.
Emily yes you nailed it! That's why this movie scares me. Hell is what our actions cause if we don't see our sin and deal with it instead of ignoring it.
Yeah I don't get It, what did Benji do??? And I didn't know that about Souxie.
Souxie couldve said sorry or apologize to la taupe the first time they met him. Those maybe the reason why. Papillano said it's not my fault and denied it.

@@GenGamesUniverse dude there are 9 circles not 7
Ah, good that there's people like you!
I was also confused when he said that Dante went to hell, to save Beatrice..
It is also fun fiction with a self insert and all
Dante when he gets back: “...The FUCK was THAT, BEATRICE?”
It all makes sense

i learned that from the live action cinderella!

A GAME TH- ok I’ll leave now.
Robert Creary Yes! What a frightening concept! It sorta had the same vibe as the Planet of the Apes (Burton) remake ending.
A cookie It’s film theory you fucking raisin cookie.
In the final circle, that is where satan is frozen thats why they were cold
holy shit this movie is alot more deep then i thought, it made it 100x better lmao

But is it as deep as the catacombs tho
It really isn't very deep though. Despite correlating with Dante's Inferno, it's all very obvious and stays on a generic surface level. It's still a crappy horror film, that's trying to be smarter than it actually is and failing to even pretend it is.
