It shouldn’t be surprising that Godzilla 2014, turned out the way it did. Edwards is more interested in human drama involving monsters, than focusing on Kaiju action. Whether you like it or not is entirely up to the individual viewer.

Instead it gripped me with a sense that the horror was lurking practically around every corner. Going into a jungle one doesn't really have good bearings and to go into it with alien creatures in the area is scary. A great western kaiju movie.

Something Gareth Edwards excels at, is world-building without much exposition.
That said, I didn't like most of his movies, mostly either because of crazy false advertisement or because of heavy meddling by studios or producers.
I think he's a talented and has vision, but has way too little experience to be put in charge of multi-million movies shortly after his début. I'm kind of afraid that Hollywood has burned him up, and really hope he find his footing, the same way Neill Blomkamp did.

I’ve only seen it once, so I should give it another chance. I just remember being bored most of the time. I did not find that the actors had chemistry nor that they had great dialogue to work with.

This movie story is great but the locations are all over the place. The fact that they show the map of Mexico as the map of Central America lol they start in Costa Rica, it even says Central America at the beginning, San Jose, they show CR license plates, then they take a train "to the coast" and they are still in Costa Rica (the man at the ticket station even names the price in Costa Rican currency), but the same night they went out and they were now in Mexico hahaha, Mexican flags, also the city looks like Tijuana, Mexican food and music. Also when the ticket guy showed them the map, it said Mexico, and even showed on the map they were somewhere in Veracruz, Mexico. Then they take a car and the plates are "Guatemala" LMAO then they take a boat on a river which there are no places like that in Mexico, so they must be in Panama or CR somewhere. But the story is good. I guess their theory was to go from Costa Rica to USA but they messed up with the footage or something.

I really liked this movie when I first watched it, and watched it again just a few days ago. What's a shame is how they review this movie as "an alien attack" film and sells it as something its clearly not. Nothing good comes from this kind of PR

Will you be doing a review of the Dark Continent? A movie where monsters are just a sideline to the everlasting conflict between people, where the monsters are in the end in ourselves. No matter the crisis, we always find a way to fight among each other, as if oblivious to the real threats.

Finally a more modern kaiju (kinda) review, still hope someday you review Colossal someday. This film is a weird one for me, love the cinematography, and the characters and the world building, all done excellent here, but just like Godzilla 2014 (another film I liked but have mix feelings with some decisions) the lack of monsters, action and real urgency or stakes, is a little bugging for me to love the film and for that reason I dont think I have watch this more than once, its a little too slow, very well made specially consider the budget, still a good film non the less.

This movie does foreshadow a lot of how Godzilla 2014 would play out. It's incredible with it's visuals and sense of scale but the human characters feel kind of bland. I never bought the romance in the film and was surprised you liked it so much. Visually it's very good and a weird yet interesting journey. In terms of characters it just feels meh. I don't know if Gareth Edwards is good with actors or not but his strength seems to be visuals. An interesting movie nonetheless.

I disagree "review". This film is about two people dealing with the everyday "monsters" of thier life, while dealing with real monsters. The father dealing with a life and son he has to disown, a woman dealing with a looming marriage to a man she doesn't love and a life she pretended to play a part in...much deeper then your assessment.

2:43 While I enjoyed the movie overall, I think this nails why I didn't love it. The movie is essentially a romantic comedy with monsters instead of jokes. There wasn't much of a reason for this to be a monster movie at all. Still a good movie, regardless.

Good movie, very boring, but in a good way.
Like the "sequel" too, though I was hoping it would show a bit more Military vs Aliens action. The ending showing something Cthulhu-like (well, not realy) was interessting, still hoping there will be another movie.

This was so bad it's actually wild how poorly it was written. If they want to make a low budget monster film, there's 100 better ways to go about it. You could literally cut out everything related to the monsters and the film would not have changed at all. At least the director redeemed himself with Godzilla, but man this would not be a desired entry to the big stage.
