  • Ever since her debut in 1961, the insect monster goddess Mothra had become a permanent fixture of the Godzilla franchise, and remains one of the most popular kaiju of all time. Why is this? What is it about her exactly that makes her so special? Let's find out!

      Very nice video! Truly I venture to say that your kaiju video essays are among the best to be found. I love your channel, and now use it to introduce potential would-be fans to series. Please keep up the fine work! And yes, more videos of this sort would be welcome. How about one good Ghidorah next? If Mothra and Godzilla are the Ying and Yang of light and dark, creation and destruction, then Ghidorah is the third element of chaos which both sides fight against. Now that I think about it, Ghidorah is kind of like entropy don’t you think? The incredible destructive end that must come to all things, and other monsters like mankind itself are constantly fighting to stay its hand. 🤔

      Honestly, as much as I would love to see Battra, I think it would be too predictable. I would rather they make the film almost like an awards contender, and embody the message and theme of the original 1961 film: that the corporate selfishness of humanity is what brings destruction to nature, and nature will consequently unleash its wrath in return, and the solution to the self-destructive fate of mankind is peace and harmony.
      It can be very applicable now especially as the world experiences the aftermath of the pandemic (assuming this movie were to come out in a few years), the world seemingly healing itself with many in quarantine. Make the movie as beautiful as the Queen herself, cinematically as well as thematically, at least for her standalone film. They can bring in Battra later.

    Mothra VS Godzilla is definitely one of my all time favorites. I like how her fragility adds this extra dimension of tragedy and dread to the whole thing, making her more heroic and Godzilla more of a bastard. The environmental message behind Godzilla is totally effective- nature getting revenge on us- but twisting it and having mankind be responsible for the death of something so beautiful and selfless is truly brutal in the way an antagonist can't often be. Kaiju perfection.

Moths, butterflies, bees, and many other pollinating organisms are among the most exemplified examples of symbiosis in the nature world, between very different plant and animals no less. Indeed, it seems most game-changing milestones in evolutionary history result when the stuff of life begins cooperating with itself.

      All good ideas, especially Ghidorah. He represents such an interesting idea withing the mythos of these movies, almost always being a malevolent force of pure, chaotic destruction, with no thought spared for any other living thing. It's actually one of the things I loved in KOTM, since they took his destructive nature and really characterized it with pure, unfiltered malevolence. So powerful that it allowed Ghidorah to be the movie's proper antagonist, which was a good thing, since the human ones weren't doing the movie any favors.

The irony to this belief is that by wiping out a dominant species to extinction, it creates unbalance, a disorder, chaos to the current ecosystem. Despite humanity's flaws, there are many species now that exist that simply wouldn't exist if it weren't for human intervention. Many of our crops and farm animals that we harvest can no longer rely on self means to stay alive. Mothra has been an interesting Kaiju for me, as I’ve never been a big fan of Mothra from the beginning, since as a kid I always found it bizzare and funny how Godzilla got his ass kicked by mothras larve children and how the shobijin (the Mothra twin fairies) always kinda freaked me out lol (but other course I’ve come to understand and appreciate how crucial they are to mothras mythos) and she had her own mediocre trilogy from the 90s. Over the yrs, I’ve come to appreciate the queen of monsters, and that’s largely thanks to the monsterverse Mothra, which in my opinion is the best and most bad ass Mothra we’ve had. I absolutely love the character design (especially compared to the Toho versions, which to me have always looked too cute or fluffy and cartoonish) and how they nailed her connection to Godzilla. It’s unfortunate that’s she was wasted in kotm and felt like an afterthought more than an actual character in the film. With that said, I absolutely respect Mothra, as she’s become the most popular Kaiju that isn’t Godzilla and I hope to see more of her in upcoming movies. Long live the Queen

      A new addition I appreciated about the Legendary Mothra is her unique God Rays ability. Her wings have often been the source of her projectile powers, but I view the blinding lights as a more appropriate power for Mothra than the beam attacks she used in the Heisei series and her own trilogy. You can understand how ancient civilizations came to see her as a goddess just by witnessing her sky-filling glow; a peaceful being with a power as capable of inspiring awe as it is in combat against her foes.

    • @Ephideltrance
      @Ephideltrance 4 года назад +2

      @@zoeadkins9095 Thing is she didn't even use the god rays in the movie for cobat which was a missed opportunity because it can be used to blind and even if shined in fast intervals, confuse foes.
      People have to remember the monsterverse franchise tries to be more grounded than the old kaiju verse. Mothra of old was basically the only divine kaiju whose powers were basically magical/mystical in nature....this is shown more clearly with her son Mothra Leo...which had a plethora of powers.
      I love both the old and new Mothra, but for me the older one due to time has a richer history. Her divine aspects is what really made her unique amongst all the kaiju. I am glad the monsterverse kept her sort of reincarnation theme, although it remains to be seen if this is truly a power it has or just coincidence that their was another mothra egg.

    • @zoeadkins9095
      @zoeadkins9095 4 года назад +1

      @@Ephideltrance I agree, all around. I'm disappointed that Mothra never used her God Rays in combat and I actually hadn't thought of her essentially strobing the light at enemies; that's a clever execution of it to differentiate between the 'awe' moments and the usage of it as a weapon. I appreciate that Legendary's creative teams gave Mothra a new ability, nonetheless.
      And I apologize if I came off as though I were bashing prior incarnations of Mothra. I hadn't forgotten that the Monsterverse is striving for a more realistic interpretation of an inherently fantastical concept. I understand why the prior Mothra's had the capabilities they did, particularly in the case of Mothra Leo and the whole Mothra trilogy. I, personally, simply find the God Rays a more interesting, and fitting, take on her powers and character. Even if the actual execution was underwhelming.

    • @Ephideltrance
      @Ephideltrance 4 года назад +1

      @@zoeadkins9095 hopefully with any luck her reincarnation will show us some of her other fantastical abilities. This Mothra is borderline mystical considering she somehow transferred her energy to Godzilla so he would not go nuclear and allow him to power up and channel the excess radiation. So it is clear Mothra has other hidden powers up her wings.

    • @zoeadkins9095
      @zoeadkins9095 4 года назад +1

      @@Ephideltrance Likewise. The way her energy was able to remain as a mist or dust, combined with the deliberate cracking of Godzilla's hide, makes it seem like more than just residual radiation.
      Adding to her subdued mysticism, I know the Chen sisters were likely only meant to be a homage but their moments around Mothra could imply more. The fact that one sister was standing before her cocoon, as if knowing her emergence had come, and the shot in Boston of Chen's face illuminated by Mothra's light seem to allude to some sort of connection. That, and their long running family history of researching Infant Island could help explain this possibility.
      Again, maybe I'm just seeing what I want to see; thought it was an intriguing possibility.
      Either way, if Mothra makes an appearance in GvK or any future films, I have the same hope.

    Mothra is no longer the only female Kaiju. Though, she is BY FAR the most well known and easily has the richest and deepest history of the handful that exist. It took nearly 30 years for Toho to introduce its second female Kaiju in Biollante and another decade+ to add Megaguirus to the mix. Legendary's MonsterVerse, on the other hand, seems to have a few from the very beginning. Mothra, obviously. But, Scylla has been referenced as female, Jinshin-Mushi is female and Tiamat and Sekhmet are named after Goddesses, so it's probably fairly safe to speculate that they're also female. Also, Margygr (the corpse located in Castle Bravo) was a female Titan as well. :) Great video though. Very enjoyable.
