How Gamera Beat Godzilla At His Own Game

  • In the beginning Gamera was always looked down as the cheaper Godzilla knock-off, but that all changed when the Heisei Gamera Trilogy was released in the last half of the 90s. In this video we take a look back at what makes this trilogy so good compared to what Godzilla was doing at the same time, and how, for a while, Gamera was the King of the Monsters.

Perhaps my favorite moment of the trilogy comes in the second film when you’re with the people at the restaurant and on the street going about their business and out of nowhere Gamera and another monster are suddenly knocking down buildings around them. I think that’s the first time I saw collateral damage portrayed like that. Even though Gamera is the hero, he’s still a danger to bystanders...

When asked about the ending to Revenge of Iris Shusuke Kaneko said that Gamera does win against all of those Gyaos but only if the audience believes in Gamera. The reason why the Gamera trilogy has that spiritual bend to it is because Shusuke noticed that modern youth where increasingly disenfranchised and didn't have any spirituality or beliefs. So he wanted to give them something to believe in even if it's a fictional flying fire breathing turtle.
Also Shusuke Kaneko said that turtles don't exist in the world of Gamera which is just weird.

The reason is that while Godzilla was still popular, they recycled a lot of other popular Monsters after Biollante flopped hard (with the exception of Battra). It wasn't until the Series was nearing its end that they came up with something somewhat 'original' (SpaceGodzilla) and something a bit more original (Destoroyah).
Gamera instead did the opposite; it reused an old Showa monster (Gyaos), then they went more original with Legion and Iris, while the Gyaos only returned very briefly in the third film.

Personally if I were to create an ally - or just two new characters in general - for Gamera, I'd probably look to the Four Auspicious Beasts (the four mythological creatures that represent the four cardinal directions in much of East Asian culture) for inspiration since the Heisei Gamera trilogy does reference them in Gamera 3: Revenge of Iris. In the film Gamera is compared to and is also believed to have been the inspiration for the Black Tortoise of the North (Genbu), and some fans speculate that this means that Gyaos and Iris may have been the inspiration for the Vermilion Bird of the South (Suzaku).
As there are no other Gamera characters which at least resemble the Azure Dragon of the East (Sieryu) and the White Tiger of the West (Byakko), I would mostly consider creating two new Gamera kaiju with influences taken from the two aformentioned mythological beasts with one or possibly both becoming an ally to Gamera.
Then again, this is how I'd approach the concept of making new monsters and potential allies in the Gamera universe. Feel free to share your thoughts on this idea.

Doesn't help that Heisei Godzilla is good so whatever gap in quality may be there it may not affect those who simply care more about Godzilla on emotional level. Kind of like with Bond. Every now and then the series formula gets stale and there may be a different movie that takes bigger risks and gets all the attention. But even when the Bond series doesn't release the absolute best of what the genre has to offet at that particular time it's still THE series.

James Inkton 2 There are a few Godzilla films that cannot be bested and sure that’s one of them. But other then those handful of films, Gamera’s Heisei trilogy did it better. It doesn’t matter if Gamera is a cheap knockoff, he evolved into his own character and became an icon. Same with Godzilla (1998) spawning his own kaiju known as Zilla which people respect.

I hope we get a Godzilla trilogy that's as on the same league as Gojira 1954, GMK, Shin Godzilla, or outside the kaiju genre, the dark knight trilogy, Jurassic park and the lord of the rings trilogy. One great thing about the Gamera Heisei series was that while it didn't exactly claim to be in continuity with the old movies, neither did it just ignore them. Several times, people talk as if some version of the previous movies really did happen, but somewhere along the line, Gamera began changing, leading up to this trilogy. That was a ballsy move on their part, and it only worked because the rest of the movie was so good and played it so straight that it didn't feel goofy.

Forget the 90s films, Gamera's been beating Godzilla at his own game since the get-go. "Gamera vs. Gaos" was the most successful Japanese monster movie of 1967, the year that every studio in Japan put out a monster movie. Ishiro Honda even sent Gamera series' writer Niisan Takahashi a congratulatory card. From that point on, Gamera went on to whip Godzilla's ass at the box office every year. "Gamera vs. Viras" was a sleeper hit and far outperformed "Destroy All Monsters." "Gamera vs. Guiron" outgrossed "Godzilla's Revenge." And "Gamera vs. Jiger" was the most successful Gamera movie to that point. Unfortunately, we don't have any data on how well "Gamera vs. Zigra" did, probably because of the riot that happened in 1971. However, I doubt it touched "Godzilla vs. Hedorah," which was one of the most successful Japanese films that year. At any rate, this is why Toho hates Gamera to this day. They can't deal with the fact this "rip-off" was beating their guy with audiences.
And "Gamera, Super Monster" wasn't an attempt to revive the series. It was a movie contractually forced into production by Tokuma Publishing, who then owned Daiei, because they found the contracts signed by the Gamera makers for an eighth movie meant to be made for 1972. They then refused to give Noriaki Yuasa a proper budget and made him use the stock footage. He tried to shoot new sequences with a new Gamera suit, but the Vistavision matting processing they were using for that film screwed up and made most of the new footage unusable.
When Gamera came back in the 90s, the films themselves may have been more cleverly made than the Godzillas of the period, but they didn't even touch what the Heisei Godzillas were bringing in at the box office (and "Gamera 3" even bombed).

Legendary Godzilla often feels closer to being Heisei Gamera than Japanese Godzilla.

It's that I've always found things between the Monsterverse Godzilla and the Heisei Gamera even in spite of the many differences that they still possesses.
*In their respective first films, both these creatures reemerge within the modern day and face off against an ancient enemy sometime after to continue to keep things in check. In Gamera's case, It's Gyaos. In Godzilla's case, it's the MUTOs.
*The Gyaos and MUTO were reawakened due to actions caused by humanity. For Gyaos, it was the destruction of the environment. For the MUTOs, it was due to activities from humans and feeding on nuclear energy.
*Both aimed to stop their respective enemies from reproducing and spawning more of them.
*Both are not specifically concerned in protecting humanity and are either fighting to restore balance and/or fight for the greater good of all life on Earth.
*Both have often unintentionally caused collateral damage during their battles.
*Both were seen as either just as big a threat or an even bigger threat in the eyes of the military and are even attacked by them during the events of their first films.
*And both kill their ancient enemy in the final battle by beheading them in their respective ways. Gamera blasted Super Gyaos' head off and Godzilla gave the Femuto the kiss of death.
*While Gamera 2 doesn't have him facing off against another ancient rival of his, both Gamera 2 and KOTM have the respective monsters facing off against a powerful creature that is extraterrestrial in origin.
*Both Godzilla and Gamera nearly die in their respective seconds films and each have would be "revived" or reenergized and juiced up to continue their battle with their enemies.
*The military assists them within the final battle of their respective second films.
*In their final battles, a certain sacrifices were made in order for each monster to power up the monster and have them be able to land the killing blow. In Gamera 2, the sacrifice would be a huge amount of the earth's mana and would eventually cause many of the Hyper Gyaos in Gamera 3 to emerge. In KOTM, Mothra sacrificed herself for Godzilla to provide him a huge energy boost, become Burning Godzilla and Ultimately defeat Ghidorah.
*At the end of each film, there's a looming question on just for how long each monster will be fighting for the side of humanity.
And this next one is just a possibility:
*And while the reasons for why Godzilla and Gamera cause destruction in Gamera 3 and Godzilla vs Kong are likely very different, it does seem like that like Gamera with the Hyper Gyaos, Godzilla is likely set off by the existence of a "certain machine" and is going desperately and recklessly out of his way to find and destroy said machine.
(But that's somewhat of a speculation on me. I still doubt that what we're seeing causing all that destruction in the film is just Mechagodzilla in disguise).
And obviously, with all those similarities, they still got a tone of differences from each other that still makes unique from each other, aside from from the creatures and abilities they have. MV Godzilla is natural born while Gamera was created by the Atlanteans, Godzilla didn't have a telepathic bond with humanity via a Magatama and Godzilla uses more of radiation related attacks rather than plasma related ones.

@@Mafia-Zilla99 yeah I've read this on another website you copied and pasted what you said on some art website onto here but let me explain the similarities between g3 and gvk.
Now there's less similarities between the two films vs g1/g14 and g2/kotm having more overall similarities but the similarities are still there
      1. Both godzilla and gamera antagonized by the media as threats to humans
      2. Both iris and mechagodzilla are hidden threats that don't reveal themselves until near the end of their films
      3. Both were made to specifically take out godzilla and gamera
      4. Both godzilla and gamera looked intentionally more intimidating. Only difference is gamera had a slight design change while godzilla had the same look
      5. The end of both movies reveal both godzilla and gamera were never the bad guys and were just doing their jobs but in more reckless ways
