  • There have been 3 major eras of Godzilla (4 including the current era), and every G-fan has their favorite. In this video I look back and briefly review the Heisei series, and explain why it remains my personal favorite series of films in the long running franchise.

      I'd say Destroyah. It's production values were very good for a Japanese movie of the time and Destroyah with his devilish look is one of my favorite Godzilla foes. I would love if the Legendary Monsterverse uses that monster as I would love to see him redone today with modern Hollywood effects. Also loved how its plot tied back to the original and wrapped up all the previous movies storylines in such a satisfying way. Probably Toho's best Godzilla movie after the original

    What I really love about Heisei Godzilla is the character he was given. He's much more animalistic compared to his later Showa counterpart, but he had qualities that displayed that he was more sentient than he let on.
    I mean, come on, Godzilla defending Little Godzilla against Space Godzilla showcases that perfectly. Especially once he started shielding his adoptive son. Heck, there's also include the scene where he first interacts with Baby Godzilla. He tried so hard to not intimidate the little guy. And that's just a little bit compared to him in Godzilla v Destoroyah.
    But I still find it ironic that Ishiro Honda disapproved of the Heisei series.
    (Edit: By "later Showa" I meant to say the ShowaGoji during his later heroic phase where Godzilla was significantly humanized.)

  • @LoudmouthReviews
    @LoudmouthReviews 5 лет назад +231

    I will agree with most of your assessment. Of the three series of Godzilla movies Toho made the second series is definitely the strongest for most of the reasons you describe such as it stronger continuity and the fact that Godzilla himself is well realized. Its worth noting that I would say the 2014 Hollywood Godzilla movie feels most inspired by the Heisei series as Godzilla similar to the Heisei series is portrayed as a force of nature neither good or bad. Something that is destructive in the way a hurricane is destructive but not driven by any malice.
    In terms of the complaint of the monster fights being nothing but beam wars that is mostly due to technological limitations. The Heisei Godzilla suit is much better looking than the ones from the original series but as a consequence the actors in those suits had limited mobility making more dynamic fights hard to due with the budget limitations of Japanese movies. Given how hot it must have been in those suits I gotta give those guys props for going through it

All the films are upper tier among the Godzilla films, with the exception of Spacegodzilla (easily the worst of the bunch).

Don't get me wrong the first Mecha Godzilla movie will probably always be my personal favorite just because its the first Godzilla I ever saw as a kid so the nostalgia is strong but this era is objectively better. The previous era was outright silly with their fights played off for laughs. This era took itself completely seriously and that elevates it.

      @Shadowrulzalways 5 лет назад +30

      GojiBro Davidson Nah. Godzilla was just a vegetable. That’s not death. But I’m sure Godzilla’s regeneration factor would have regenerated him after a while. • @AEsir_Goji
      @AEsir_Goji 5 лет назад +7

      @@Shadowrulzalways I'm arguing more that because Godzilla couldn't move at that moment, SMG2 had a chance to kill him if it moved fast enough;retract and refire its harpoons into Godzilla's skull and destroy the brain that truly matters.

    • @Shadowrulzalways
      @Shadowrulzalways 5 лет назад +11

      GojiBro Davidson No destroying the brain will not truly kill him. Godzilla’s cells can regenerate by themselves. Just one cell alone can grow back into a new Godzilla.This has been a confirmed fact for years. Godzilla can only be truly killed by destroying all his cells on a molecular or atomic level or by draining his energy completely. Which SMG isn’t capable of doing. Why do you think the oxygen destroyer and the meltdown killed Godzilla? Or why the Anti-nuclear energy bacteria nearly worked? LOL Seems you don’t know much about Godzilla.

    • @AEsir_Goji
      @AEsir_Goji 5 лет назад +9

    I agree with a lot here, Heisei is my favorite, and my all time four favorite Godzilla movies are Mechagodzilla II, King Ghidorah, Destoroyah, and Biollante. The complaint about the fights is something I've never understood. Except for SpaceGodzilla, I think the films had plenty of physical combat. I liked how whenever they fought physically, there's weight to their attacks, and they fight as if they're ferocious giant creatures. There's plenty of memorable moments; King Ghidorah strangling Godzilla, Godzilla lifting, throwing, and tail slamming Mechagodzilla, the whole Rodan fight, Godzilla's fight with Battra Larva, Destoroyah's horn katana and prehensile tail, and a lot more. The bulkiness of the suits made Kawakita come up with creative ways to have the monsters fight up close. Mechagodzilla was also a beam and missile spammer in the Showa series, so that complaint about the Heisei one is very hypocritical. I also do thoroughly enjoy beam battles when under exciting direction (which I find in Omori and Okawara's films).

After Godzilla 2000....Megaguirus and GMK didn't debut in the USA until premiering on the sci-fi channel in 2003. So there was a 3 year gap where G2K was the newest film in the US, and there were 3 mythical movies released in Japan that nobody got to see......and the Heisei series was as modern as the movies got.
    The continuity and heavy screen-time of the monsters, as well as the colorful palettes where vivid laser blasts were spammed constantly just made them aesthetically pleasing to my young mind.

I love Kawakita and satsumas vision of how Godzilla should look and behave. and in spite of the overwhelming difficulties in cranking out a major film every year, (with nine major visual-effects productions done in only 6 years) the vast majority of the imagery is outstanding. Your intro in this video almost perfectly described my own introduction to the Heisei films. My parents bought me the Official Godzilla Compendium which I re-read so often I practically memorized it at one point, and I saw the still images and read about them only to be disappointed not to have them. The only difference between you and me is that I convinced my parents to record most of them on blank VHS tapes during a marathon on AMC's MonsterFest, complete with intros by Roger Corman. We only bought professional copies of the ones we missed, lol.
    Although I love entries from all three eras, I've always thought the Heisei era was the best, with Godzilla vs King Ghidorah being my personal favorite, even if it is rife with plot holes and continuity errors. That's why I'm anxious to hear Blunova's thoughts on them, because he constantly refers to them as disappointing. The only one he's analyzed in detail is Destroyah, and admittedly, he did bring up some great points and made me re-think my own opinion of that particular film. He has yet to elaborate on the others, though.

    As a huge Godzilla film the heisei series had some serious bangers. That moment when Godzilla's son died right in front of his dad, only to then be revived by his dad dying in front of him, really goes to show the emotional quality of those films. My favorite's for me will always be the classic films of the showa era, but goddman heisei had some great stuff.

    I've heard the comments about not having enough physical combat in these movies. I don't agree with them. Why? Because all of these kaiju Know they have beam attacks. And as these kaiju are mostly basically just huge animals in some ways, wouldn't it make sense for them to attack their opponents or defend themselves in the safest and most efficient way? Any one of these creatures would be freaking out at the possibility of some other huge creature getting close enough to rip their throat out.
    Why not spam beam attacks and hope your opponent dies from that before they get close enough to cause physical damage and possibly kill you? I honestly never understood why Godzilla, King Ghidorah, or any other beam toting kaiju in the Showa era rarely used their beams. Just didn't make sense to me. Why not try and kill your opponent from far away? It's a no brainer. Duh. lol.

    Best era for Godzilla? That's like saying Star wars wasn't jaw dropping when it debut! Heck yes Heisei was the greatest! Nothing wrong with the new stuff either!

    I mean everything you explained and pointed out they are very valid points one thing I did enjoy was the fact that Godzilla was just indestructible and yet a protector at times and the fact we got to see baby Godzilla grow into a full adult Godzilla at the end of the series
