In 1984, Toho rebooted Godzilla's continuity, ignoring all previous films except for the original 1954 classic. Thus began what fans have dubbed "The Heisei Era." While The Return of Godzilla (1984) and Godzilla vs Biollante (1989) kept fairly consistent timelines, things got messy with Godzilla vs King Ghidorah (1991). It introduced time travel, tangent universes, and a confusing timeline. With 2022's Godzilla vs Gigan Rex, we wanted to go back and untangle the mess.

Fun Fact: The 1994 book Godzilla vs. SpaceGodzilla Super Complete Works states that M.O.G.U.E.R.A was built using records of the original Moguera left behind from the Mysterians' 1957 invasion of Earth, suggesting that The Mysterians is canon to the Heisei series.

Great video. Though i honestly dont think there was actually a second timeline at all, but rather the Futurians were always meant to travel back in time to create Ghidorah. This is what gives Japan its hyper-advanced tech going into the 21st century. This also resulted in a truly heroic Godzilla in the form of the adult Junior, who would be allies with Japan should it come under threat.
I'm of this opinion as well, that it was ALWAYS all one timeline. The time travel is a part of one single timeline. The time travel always happens, and it is always a self reinforcing and self-fulfilling prophecy. By going back in time to stop Japan's rise to supremacy, the Futurians inadvertently cause it to happen by bringing advanced technology back to Japan. By trying to erase Godzilla from history, they CAUSED the birth of the 2nd Godzilla.
The only snag is that it all sort of hinges on the notion that the Futurians are too stupid to realize that the timeline can't be changed.
Nothing indicate Junior is will protect or even like humans. Sure, as a infant with a underdeveloped brain he was friendly to them, but that's no different that a Lion cub being friendly to a gazelle. Doesn't change the fact that once the Lion is fully grown, it will become hyper aggressive and highly territorial.
The crazy thing is that in all three timelines destroyah still gets created
And only one of them has burning Godzilla who is the only one strong enough to defeat destroying allow the humans to be able to kill him with his help
So that means there are two timelines where destroyer is left on stopped he might not be a strong since he possibly never gets Godzilla's DNA but still with his ability to evolve it would still get pretty strong and unstoppable

I wish this timeline video had given a pre-Lagos island history, like the history of the Cosmos and the existence of Destoroyah crabs.
I believe the original Heisei Timeline is:
There is no Heisei / 2nd Godzilla at first. The main character from Godzilla vs King Ghidorah theorized that the 1954 Godzilla was created by the nuclear tests near Lagos Island which mutated the Godzillasaurus. He believed the dinosaur on Lagos island WAS the 1954 Godzilla because in the original timeline there was only 1 Godzilla. However he was incorrect but the Futurians wanted to exploit this possible theory that they thought was true. So they go back in time under the assumption that they'll be removing 1954 Godzilla from history, when what they did by moving the Godzillasaurus inadvertently created the Heisei Godzilla which didn't exist at first, the Godzillasaurus in the original timeline would had died as intended.
This original timeline isn't seen at all in the Heisei series because the Heisei series is already on the time paradox loop where the Futurians have already accidentally created the Heisei Godzilla which appears in 1984. The start of Godzilla vs King Ghidorah was already an altered timeline. So when Heisei Godzilla "disappeared" in vs King Ghidorah, it was purely coincidental since he was still recovering from the Anti Radiation Bacteria. The Heisei Godzilla had always been nuked up but it was the Japanese Sub seen within the same movie that made Godzilla even bigger.
Original Timeline (No Time Travel Effects Yet):
1954 - Godzilla appears and dies to the oxygen Destroyer
1992 - Terasawa investigates and theorizes the 1954 Godzilla was created by nuclear tests done near Lagos Island which mutated a Godzillasaurus.
20XX - Japan is a super power nation and the Futurians read Terasawa's book which is actually wrong and hope to exploit it.
Altered Timeline (Futurian's first travel back in time)
1992 - Futurians execute their plan and get Terasawa and the others to go with them to go back in time to remove the Godzillasaurus back in the 1940s to another location. This now creates the Heisei Godzilla that appears in 1984.
1984 - Heisei Godzilla first appears and gets trapped in a Volcano.
1989 - Heisei Godzilla escapes volcano and fights Biollante. Godzilla gets injured by the Anti Nuclear Bacteria and goes into hiding.
1992 - Terasawa investigates the birth of Godzilla and theorizes how the 1954 Godzilla was created. He is also under the assumption that 1954 Godzilla = 1984 Godzilla. The Futurians come and execute their plan again, however the time paradox will keep looping. The 1984 Godzilla and Godzilla vs Biollante movies already take place on an altered timeline.
The original timeline is never shown in the movies as the was never a Heisei Godzilla.

And then a year later, after rex, jr showed up being aggressive to humans. Megalon was summoned by a strang girl, and began a fight with jr. Jr, learning new tricks in the fight, eventually over powered his foe and collapsed.

I really appreciated this in-depth look at the timeline of my favorite Godzilla series. Even as a self-proclaimed big fan, I never payed attention to the exact dates, which were displayed on various documents and screens throughout.
As for the time travel, my personal head cannon is that the time travel forms a self-contained time loop. The futurians traveling back in an attempt to erase the Heisei Godzilla inadvertently creates it instead. Japan is never destroyed because the Heisei Godzilla dies in 1996 and the fully grown Godzilla Jr. is more friendly to humans because it grew up near humans. Japan has futuristic tech from Mecha King Ghidorah’s remains should they need to defend themselves against other kaiju and Godzilla Jr. also defeats the Gigans and now Megalon.

Hiroshima and Nagasaki were bombed on Aug. 6th and 9th, 1945 respectively. Not 1946. Even movie timeline both occur on their real life dates. I get it’s only a year off, but Aug. 6th is being considered by as the start of a new geological epoch because of the increased nuclear material and radiation on earth because of human actions. It’s like, important we remember our history right, especially something as game changing as entering the Atomic Age.
Your breakdown by proxy would suggest that Space Godzilla did spawn from Godzilla cells carried into space by Mothra, or that Space Godzilla only comes to Earth because Godzilla isn't dormant. Seems to lend more weight to the likelyhood that Mothra was the unwitting culprit.
Toho has confirmed in every official source that Mothra was the unintended culprit.

okay so my question is.... where is future godzilla in the year 2204? If he is dead why didnt the future humans use the same exact plan to kill the godzilla in the past? A lot of unanswered questions.
My theory that that Spacegodzilla killed him.
In that timeline Godzilla would have stayed dormant and never come back due to bacteria, he would never have they nuke to heal him, what happends in the future is that Japan becomes the most powerful country ever due to discovering a new form of titanium that comes from space, and the americans get jeleous, they travel back in time to destroy Japan with King Ghidorah.
Vs King Ghidorah is paradox-free time travel. There were ALWAYS three Godzillasaurs, Showa, Heisei, Junior. Showa was on a different island, Heisei is the one that attacks the American troops on Lagos Island, Jr. was dormant until he awoke in vs MG2. Godzillasaurs are shown to be highly adaptable to radiation poisoning up to and including radical positive mutation in their physiology. The nuclear testing at the Marshall Islands created Showa, the residual radiation from those tests in the waters of the pacific and the Soviet submarine tests created Heisei, and Heisei has always existed because of the Futurians actions. There is no original timeline. The Futurians have always gone back, they have always placed the second Godzillasaur in the Bering Sea, they always will. There is only one timeline. Jr. Starts mutating simply from proximity to his “father” and then being on Baas/Birth Island when it went thermonuclear. There were always 3 Godzillas in the Heisei timeline and there always will be.
Mostly accurate, except for Showa. Showa Godzilla exists in a different world or continuity - like Shin Godzilla, or Minus One Godzilla.
Heisei still takes into account the 1954 film, but everything after that is not canon to Heisei.
Hiroshima: August 6th 1945
Nagasaki: August 9th 1945
Always wished they used godzilla junior in the millenium series. Instead of just every movie being its own sequel to the 1954 movie. The millenium series is fun, but is a hot mess.
Godzilla was done in 1950s that was different from the 1960s and the 1970s was something else all together that in the 1980s and the 1990s was to forward to be more just like the 1954 movie to change the way the movies are done to get it back on track to all grown up movies and not the silly children movies that the 1984 can get a new start of movies that would last to this day in how they are made and get away from the 1960s and the 1970s back to normal godzilla movies that did more for godzilla movies that people like more keep on going

Simple. The dinosaur that became the Heisei Godzilla WAS NOT the one that attacked in 1954. Terasawa’s theory was wrong and the Futurians ended up creating the Godzilla that appeared in 1984.
The futurians weren’t sent to stop Godzilla 1954, they were sent to stop Hesei Godzilla from being born

Heisei Godzilla is mutated at a later date thanks to time travel nonsense

You got something wrong. The injured dinosaur on Lagos island never mutated in 1954, it was teleport by the futurians to the barring sea….it was ALWAYS transported to the barring sea. There is no timeline where this didn’t happen except an original timeline where that dinosaur just died on Lagos and there never was a second Godzilla.
The Return of Godzilla and Godzilla vs Biolantte both depict events that happened because of the futurians actions.
Godzilla grew in GvsKG because he ate the Japanese nuclear sub that was sent to look for the Lagos dinosaur. It had nothing to do with time travel. He was already bigger than the original G to begin with.
It is not confusing when you have the basics right.

Ah, the old causal loop theory, I knew someone would this bring it up. ;) This was actually debunked in “Godzilla 1954-1999 Super Complete Works” (ゴジラ1954-1999 超全集 Gojira 1954-1999 Chō Zenshū).
Space Godzilla? It shouldn't exist. Simply because of the incoherent story and bad fx. It was so hated by Akira Ifubue; that he even refused to score it!
