Mighty Joe Young is a 1998 American epic adventure film based on the 1949 film of the same name about a giant mountain gorilla brought to a wildlife preserve in Los Angeles by a young woman who raised him, and a zoologist, to protect him from the threat of poachers until one seeks Joe out in order to take his revenge. It was directed by Ron Underwood and stars Bill Paxton, Charlize Theron, and creature suit actor John Alexander as the title character. In this version, the ape is much larger than in the original.

I really loved this movie growing up, and hope to give it another watch soon! 🥰
Love the review, and happy you enjoy it! Love Mighty Joe Young! One of my favorite remakes. And yes I loved the original too. Thank you for reviewing this movie. It deserves better than it’s credited for. Lastly, it’s a million times better than the 98 remake of Godzilla.
You should check out the owl house
"DISNEYCEMBER 2021 blog" day 13 travels back to 1998 with today's feature "mighty Joe young" feat the late Bill Paxton & Charlize Theron as they protect a giant ape named Joe from poachers & danger when I was little & seeing this the Joe age was huge & cool but destroy a car to turn off a alarm was a little funny but hiding a giant ape due to it's size was hard to handle if you know how to handle a giant ape like Joe good thing the ape was just C.G.I if you seen this film back in 1998 or barely remember seeing the film great & for those whom hasn't seen this film go swing in to "Disney +" & give "mighty Joe young" a watch it might drive you bananas! if you know what I mean."
You should watch operation Dumbo Drop
You know what's funny?
Joe has more facial expressions than the cgi lions in lion king 2019.
Well Gorillas are a lot more expressive than Lions anyway. But when it’s animated they should have at least made the facial muscles do something in The Lion King.
You got that right!
It does help that Joe is much closer to humans in the evolutionary realm
Ikr and this cost 90 million to make aswell compared to lion King which cost 200 million
Heres an amazing bit of Trivia
If it hadn't been for Mighty Joe Young, we may never have got Peter Jackson's Lord of the Rings!
He was DETERMINED to direct King Kong, with Godzilla at the time also being made (and sucking) studios considered his wishes and it was almost green lit
Then Mighty Joe Young was made - studios backed out
Jackson then found Lord of the Rings book on a whim coming back from those meetings and the rest is history
- followed of course by his life long dream to direct King Kong, and not just update it but make it so that a mixture of his vision yes was made but predominately pay tribute to what the original main director in 1933, Merian C. Cooper, had made and make it something that he would have wanted with modern effects, thus continuing the legacy and story of the very man who inspired him to become a director
The effects have no business being this good in a late-90s movie. If nothing else it's definitely one of Disney's better looking live-action projects from that era.
Most of it was a guy in a gorilla costume and practical effects.
Joe was cgi only when he had lot of movement.
If Jurassic Park can pull it off, so can Mighty Joe
Rick Baker was behind the special effects of this film, so you know that this movie will have pretty good effects
@@brandonmclendon5368 👍👍💯💯💯
The effects look better than half of the live action remakes that are coming out lately from Disney.
Interesting fact: for most of the film, Joe was portrayed by a creature-suit performer who wore a radio-controlled animatronic gorilla mask and full body suit created by special makeup effects artist Rick Baker and his crew. To achieve those scenes, the suit performer acted on miniature sets surrounded by blue screen; a visual-effects house then composited him into footage shot earlier. Joe as a baby was performed by the late Verne Troyer. For certain scenes, the filmmakers used three full-sized animatronics (one in quadruped, one sitting down, and one in a dead position) also created by Baker's crew. For the digital Joe, visual-effects houses DreamQuest Images and Industrial Light & Magic worked on different scenes, using the same model provided by Baker. Many of these performances were achieved by key-frame animation, but to portray the digital Joe running and jumping, motion-capture data from an infant chimpanzee were used
Wow!
This was more complicated then I thought!
And Vern was involved?!
That makes it even better!
Baker's suit was an updated version of his "Digit" suit from GORILLAS IN THE MIST (which was also used in BABY'S DAY OUT). Baker's gone on to say that it's plausibly the best "realistic" ape suit he made
@@Herowebcomics Yeah, Mini-Me as Joe. That’s something cool
@@Herowebcomics Rick Baker got Verne his first job in the business on Baby’s Day Out and kept having production hire him on Amazing Panda Adventure, Men In Black, this, and Grinch.
@@van8ryan actually the Joe suit was made completely from scratch, but the Digit suit and others suits from Gorillas In the Mist did appear in the opening as Joe’s father and troop.
I'm not ashamed to admit this but I ALWAYS cry when I watch this movie.
Me too, you'd have to have a heart made of stone not to at least get teary eyed.
This is one of my favorite giant ape films of all time! The Imba Wimbo song makes me cry because it's very beautiful.
Honestly I do remember this movie Does anybody remember this film.
I was banned from watching as a child because of that reason
Sama
This is honestly a damn good movie, and I feel like Peter Jackson took inspiration from it when he made Kong 2005.
Oh the original Peter Jackson versión he had in mind before lord of the rings, it was more darker and over the top than what finally got in the 2005, and thats saying a lot since it already have a lot of disturbing scenes like the spider pit.
@@motor4X4kombat While I do love the 2005 film, I'm curious to see what the original version would have been like.
This and Jurassic park for Peter Jackson
If you watch the making of documentary in the extended DVD of Jackson’s Kong, they say Mighty Joe Young and 98 Godzilla was a big reason why they didn’t make King Kong in the 90s, because they didn’t want to compete with a giant gorilla movie AND a giant monster movie in New York and so Jackson put Kong on hold and went to the lord of the rings
@@motor4X4kombat This was why Jackson's first attempt at remaking KONG was cancelled because Universal was afraid MIGHTY JOE YOUNG would topple it (as well as GODZILLA which had came out that summer)
On the thirteenth Disneycember, my critic gave to me:
Thirteen bad commercials
Twelve Vespas racing
Eleven Jedi fighting
Ten gangsters dancing
Nine Launchpad crashes
Eight hammy nobodies
Seven dogs a-barking
Six long delays
FIVE POWER UPS
Four bad reboots
Three magic candles
Two Sith Lords
And a blade in the shape of a key
This makes my holiday bright 😊
Thanks so much for this comment, such a gem that brightens up my day! ❤️
Oh gawd...
I always remember seeing the ad for this on the VHS promo reel for The Lion King II: Simba’s Pride. Very nostalgic.
Lol, thought I was the only one😂
That's how I remember this movie cause I think I watched it once but don't really remember anything
I think that’s what I remember it from as well.
Same. That was a good add.
I think I saw it on the Pocahontas 2 VHS😂
This movie was a big part of my childhood, glad to see you finally reviewing it.
The movie has been a big part of my childhood too. It's one of my favorite Disney movies. I love the movie so much that my 3rd birthday was Mighty Joe Young themed, which is kind of funny to me because I used to be afraid of Joe. There were mainly 2 scenes in the movie that I was scared of, the scene where Joe jumps out of the trees near the beginning of the movie and the scene where Joe crashes the party.
same here
@@Wickedfan219
Aww 😊
That sounds really cute.
Mine also.
* crunches peanut menacingly *
Fun Fact: Rick Baker did the effects on Joe and said he did them because he felt unsatisfied with his work from the 1970s King Kong film and this was his chance to put those issues to rest.
That makes so much sense for how good the effects on Joe are as Rick Baker was the master at practical effects.
The early scenes with Joe and Charlize Theron’s mom’s being killed are genuinely really sad and emotional.
That was the first time a Disney death made me cry. I think I actually stopped the vhs after that cuz I was too sad.
@@singer2be256 Dang. That’s seriously sad.
And when they start singing together when they're alone, but by the end it's just the daughter singing. Very clever and such a sad way to portray that the mother died halfway through the song 🥺
Well, Disney's known for tugging on our heartstrings.
An underrated classic. Loved this movie as a kid.
Looking back the way they brought Joe to life is just incredible. I don’t know how they did it but MAN it doesn’t look fake. Not one second of film with Joe looks fake. That’s amazing
Rip bill paxton. You are greatly missed
Soo sad he died
It looks like what they did in Jurassic Park with the T-Rex. They actually had an animatronic T-REX interacting with the characters and it made it much more real and believable. This is the same. You FEEL LIKE he's really there and interacting with Jill. Its definitely not just a CGI gorilla. You can see the emotions shining through in his expressions and tell EXACTLY what he's feeling. Its beautiful.
Bill Paxton and Helen Hunt were actually considered for the lead roles in Godzilla 1998 because of their chemistry in Twister
@@billybarnett9518 -
It probably would've been a lot better if they accepted the roles. I'm not saying Matthew Broderick is a bad actor, far from it. The script was awful and the plot was all over the place, just too many plot holes and garbage dialogue. That's why Godzilla 1998 is considered one of the worst movies ever made.
They used a mix of CGI and practical effects. Joe was animatronic at some parts and CGI in others, such as when he's climbing the ferris wheel. Unless they used miniatures for that, I don't know. They did use forced perspective as well. For a movie released in 1998, the effects hold up very well.
Partially correct. For most of the film, Joe was portrayed by a guy in a suit with blue screens and miniatures used to make him look appropriately large.
Finally, the one Disney movie I've been waiting for.
The reason the marketing failed was due to many reasons. The main reason being Godzilla (1998) the film was set to be released in the summer, but Godzilla pushed it back. By the time the Christmas season came around Disney didn't want to put anymore money into it, so its why it tanked and the marketing was terrible.
Which is a shame since the effects were provided by the legendary Rick Baker who did the 1976 remake of King Kong. He stated this was the ape suit he wanted to do for Kong 20 years earlier. 95% of the films effects were done with suitmation and full scale animatronics when the other 5% used CGI by ILM which to be honest is the only minor nitpick. The film was also co produced by RKO, the studio behind the original.
I'd highly recommend the original Mighty Joe Young. It was Ray Harryhausen's first big gig with his mentor and animator behind the original King Kong, Willis O'Brien. If you remember the scene at the party, there's an old couple who compliments Jill's look. That's Ray Harryhausen and Terri Moore who played Jill in the original.
It's a shame the film suffered in marketing and release the way it did. Its failure along with Godzilla 98 is why Peter Jackson cancelled his original Kong plans in the 90s and made Lord Of The Rings instead. While the remake eventually got made, the original 1996 script was a much better story taking the original Kong and making it an Indiana Jones movie. Worth looking into.
Great review Doug
Hi Jack! Didn’t expect you to be here, but I’m glad he finally reviewed the film!
Loved that script! Perhaps one day Peter Jackson will get his Sopwith Camel air battle...
I knew that you'd be here Jack
It should also be mentioned that the original Mighty Joe Young also had the same writers and directors as the original King Kong. In many ways it was an official friendlier sequel/ remake.
When a 1998 kids movie has better effects than any of the Disney live-Action remakes.
FINALLY!! I've wanted him to review this for years. I love this movie.
So this is essentially the Rocky and Bullwinkle Movie of Disneycember. A lightweight but enjoyable comedy that is sharper and more charming than the trailers implied...
This movie is highly underappreciated and underrated. It has amazing effects, solid acting, but yet was made during that lackluster era of Hollywood. So happy that I got to grow up with it.
What are you talking about, it's pretty much universally accepted that the 90s was Hollywood's golden era. In fact some of the best blockbusters ever produced came out in that decade.
When it comes to Mighty Joe Young, most people see the Disney version as the definitive version.
I love whenever Doug likes something that he expects to hate.
I will say that Joe's expressions still impress me to this day. I'll always remember the scene near the end when he kills the villain. The blind rage in his eyes (which is fitting, considering this is the same villain that killed his mother, and Charlize Theron's when he was a baby)
The effects in this movie is just jaw dropping, still today they looks amazing.
Instead of remaking their classics in "live action", why doesn't Disney do this? This was great!
I'm surprised he didn't mention how beautiful and memorable the soundtrack was! The score was composed by James Horner (RIP) and it was a huge part of what gave this film so much heart and soul.
Mighty Joe Young is my favorite movie from 1998, same year I was born along with The Prince Of Egypt!
I highly recommend watching the original Mighty Joe Young from 1949. It’s from the same team that made King Kong, and it shows how much their effects had evolved since.
Wow, what a throwback! I completely forgot this movie existed
This film has always stayed with me. I saw it at the movies when I was a kid, and find so much about it memorable: the acting, directing, the effects, the score by the late James Horner, and of course Joe himself. This film is surprisingly very moving, and even though my little sister screamed in the theater at the end when she thought Joe died(which is funny in hindsight), it didn't ruin the experience for me. It has stayed with me, and it was a film I shared with my wife and stepson, who both enjoyed it too. Thanks for finally watching it for Disneycember, Doug. I am happy you enjoyed it as I did.
This is a pretty solid remake with some incredible looking special effects. Plus both Bill Paxton and Charlize Theron are both great in it.
Oh hey JT!
Hi
I loved this movie when I was a little kid. The finer details of the plot went completely over my head, but I thought it was so cool to see people interact with this giant gorilla. I kept thinking “Oh cool, I can be friends with a gorilla!” And going off what Doug said about this being a Disney Kong film; this was in fact my introduction to King Kong. Very nostalgic.
RIP bill paxton you made part of my days with the disney reniassnce great
Toward the end of both Mighty Joe Young movies even though I know Joe will be alright I always cry at the end Because seeing the Joes risk their lives to save the kid gets me every time. And I'm glad you got to do a disneycember on this movie.
That kid scene always hits me in the feels.
This is, in my opinion, one the most underrated Disney films ever. I've hardly seen anybody talk about this, because I really love this film and I think people should see it more. I'm glad that I found someone that finally gets to talk about this fun movie.
I loved that movie when i was a kid, though i haven't watched it in years.
I revisited it on Disney+.
I love the soundtrack. I listened to "Windsong" a lot when I found it on RUclips years ago cuz i wanted to memorize the lyrics. Still listen to it every now and then
Doug, I love your ability to really analyze films and their effects on the audience... You do a great job at balancing the good and the bad
Honestly, this film is one of the more underrated Kong films that deserves a bit of love and I honestly enjoyed it
I never actually watched this movie. But, yet it was a HUGE part of my childhood! It would always play on the VHS before Lion King 2 and I loved the movie ad! Not sure why I never sat down and watched it, but just seeing that clip of the man taking the apes hand, brings back so many memories! So much nostalgia!! Thanks Doug!! ❤
I rewatched it on Disney+. It holds up so well.
YeS! That’s why I eventually rented the movie from the library; the trailer on the lion king 2 vhs!
The trailer for Mighty Joe Young on the Lion King 2 VHS looked amazing.
God I have forgotten about this film! I watched this movie as a kid and remember that it was good. Man I need to revisit it now as an adult
The practical effects on the Gorilla 🦍 is incredible
I remember seeing the 1949 one when I was a teen, it was my King Kong, and I kinda liked it.
There are a couple nice nods to the original that don't distract too much. Terry Moore and Ray Harryhausen have a quick cameo and a saxophonist plays Beautiful Dreamer. I don't remember if there was anything else.
Again, major shout out to Rick Baker and his crew, particularly the late Matt Rose, but also to John Alexander who wore the Joe suit for most of the film. Ron Underwood was really on Rick’s side and after he saw the digital tests, he told Rick and his crew to build two more full sized Joe’s aside from the one and suits they already made. Rick said that Joe is the gorilla suit he always dreamed of making.
the effects mostly still look amazing. Many other films from this time have not aged well but this is still a great film effects wise
This movie was my childhood! I've been watching it almost everyday since I heard you were going to review it, because I love it so much. I watched it last night, and even though I knew what happens at the end everytime I see it, I still cry when Joe almost dies falling off the ferris wheel.
The acting in this is really good, (some of Theron and Paxton's best), and the effects on how the crew brought Joe to life still hold up to this day. To give you an example, this movie was released the same year as Roland Emmerich's Godzilla, but where that movie was made using mostly (horrible) CGI, Mighty Joe Young was brought to life through the use of CGI, puppetry and makeup (courtesy of legendary makeup artist, Rick Baker).
This is one of my favorite live action Disney movies, and I found your review of it absolutely glowing. Excellent work, Doug. I knew you'd love it. 5/5
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
You can thank Rick Baker for the incredible effects, the same guy responsible for the effects in An American Werewolf in London, Men in Black, Gremlins 2, The Nutty Professor (Eddie Murphy version), Ed Wood, King Kong (1976) etc.
This was one of my favorite movies as a kid, now I have to go rewatch it.
Literally one of my favorite childhood movies
The production value on this was improbably huge.
$90 million
seems like this is the disneycember of things being better than you'd expect
I grew up on this film, and to this day it is still one of my favorites. Thanks for the review Nostalgia critic.
I remember this movie having some good music too. The theme Dedication and Windsong by James Horner is beautiful
Over 20 years later, the effects are still amazing
Sounds like this needs a full episode soon
A good review, I hope. Nothing really negative to be found here with this movie.
Since next year is Mighty Joe Young's 25th anniversary, it makes sense for the Nostalgia Critic to do a full review on the movie.
Surprised how well the CG Joe holds up. Le loving practical effects, the suit looks great.
Childhood classic film right here.
I’ve been going back to this movie in the past few years and I still to this day love this film. I grew up with it and I’ll definitely show it to my kids!
Directed by the vastly under appreciated Ron Underwood, the same man that gave us Tremors. The score by the late James Horner is also really well done especially the African chant song they do after the death of the mother. Horner really captures the charm and charisma of this film. I really love this movie and will have a nostalgic feeling towards it.
This was one of my favorite movies growing up. I wish it got more love.
this was my first monster ish movie as a child and thanks to Joe I haven't missed anything Kong related in recent times. It was so good! I even looked into being a zoo keeper a one point but discovered I have to many allergies; I still watch it every now and again and still find it wayy better then even some of the modern stuff.
This was one of my favorites as a kid.
Nice! It's AWESOME that you're FINALLY reviewing this movie.
I will give this a watch on Disney plus someday, Looks like a gem of a movie.
I have a feeling that next year, ABC Family (Freeform) will include this movie in their 25 Days of Christmas lineup.
It is. It is a rare gem and a true delight. 😊
I’m so glad your reviewing one of my favorite movie as a child.
This movie was AMAZING. It made me cry TWICE. And I agree with you that however they did the gorilla effects for Joe, it was REALLY GOOD. You can clearly see in his expressions, exactly what he's feeling in any given moment. When he's scared, you feel bad for him. When he's happy and playing with Jill, its beautiful. I'm glad he got his happy ending.
My father took me to see this movie when I was really young and it has always stuck with me.
I remember watching this on TV many times.. haven't seen it in a while, I think I might schedule a re-watch, really remember liking it a lot
So glad to see this movie getting some love after 20 plus years. When I discuss this with friends it's normally a moment where I find people who have not see this film or only have glanced through bits and pieces. Once they watch it, there is normally tears and smiles involved. This film is a tearjerker in a great way. And...yes, the effects are way better than we could have hoped. This clearly was a production where they really tried. And, frankly, not only does it show but it shines.
Glad to see I’m not the only one who loved this movie growing up. I haven’t seen it in years, but hopefully I’ll stumble across it.
Fun fact the late Ray Harryhousin (the stop motion animator who worked on the original mighty joe young) makes a cameo in this film as a gentleman at a party
I’m glad he liked this flick. This was one of my childhood favorites
Holy cow... you just unlocked a memory of my childhood, i used to watch this movie all the time
Yes! I watched this movie with my mom this year. I'd never seen the flick the whole way through before, and I loved it! Great review.
I remember always seeing commercials for this movie on my Disney vhs tapes and up until now thought it was a weird fever dream of some kind XD.
I remember seeing this in the movie theater when I was a little kid with my grandparents. I also remember my grandmother showing me the original.

Dang!!! I'm old, haven't seen this in forever!!! Definitely a childhood favorite
Damn, I haven't watched this film in years and I'd forgotten how much I loved it.
Younger me was obsessed with this movie.
This was one of my favorites growing up!
I almost forgot this movie existed (I have an easier time remembering Disney's animated movies than live-action), or that Theron was in it, but I might check it out. Sounds like the characters in the more "family friendly*" version of the classic Kong-type story make more mature and sensible choices than in the classic one, and the poacher carrying a vendetta for losing a finger to the gorilla has that "Captain Ahab vs. Moby Dick" feel to it.
*At the risk of spoiling, who did Joe kill?
I still enjoy this movie to this day!
One of my favourite Childhood movies. I still sometimes hum the lullaby to my dog when she's napping beside me.
As a kid, I always forgot that Disney made this movie. My family and I watched a million times, and it still holds up to this day. It's a very rare gem in the Disney vault where they actually gave a crap and gave effort. I'm so glad this movie exists for that reason.
Can we all agree there's no better Disney movie about gorillas than Tarzan? That movie is still awesome.
I love Disney’s Tarzan.
This one is a close second
I'm a huge Disney fan and I've literally never heard of this in my life! When I first saw the thumbnail, I thought it was the one and only Ivan lol!
I will always say Mighty Joe Young is still the King of Mount Pangani(Central Africa). Fell in love with this film the first time watching it in daycare back in 1999. Still one of my top 5's ever!
This movie touched me so much as a kid
Man oh man! I saw this as a kid. I got to watch it again.
One of my favourite movies growing up as a kid. The windpipe song never fails to make me cry as well as giving me goosebumps.
Shame it bombed at the box office.
YES FINALLY, I always wanted to know your thoughts on this. Thank you.
Loved this movie as a kid and still do now.
The effects, my God! My same thoughts as well, critic. Also, James Horner's score has always mesmerized me....that ending...wow!!!!
I am so glad that you like this film. This movie has been one of my favorites since I was a kid. I think I watched a behind the scenes one time about how they created Joe. I believe they used a puppet for a majority of the movie. For it being 1998, there is no way they used CGI because back then it would've looked way too fake. That's one of the reasons this movie has aged pretty dang well, because they used practical effects over visual ones.
I saw this movie a ton with my brother and sister growing up. I was 4 when it premiered, and I always loved it. Haven't seen it in so long now and really should do it again. Even if I barely understood everything that went on back then I do remember feeling a bit sad when the mother passes away in the beginning.
I probably watched mighty joe young 59 times as a kid lol i loved it
Favorite childhood film
I remember watching this movie every day when I was very little. My great uncle had it on VHS and it was an odd comfort to watch it all the time as a 3 year old
