This is one of my all time favorite films. I especially like the little quirks they gave to Joe, like punching the ground with his fist when he gets frustrated instead of lashing out. It helps convey his gentle nature.
Man, this review really takes me back. My mother absolutely loves this film, I love it, and the ending is absolutely incredible (it's been two decades since I've seen this and I STILL tear up thinking about the ending). Stellar job here, James.
I remember watching this as a kid and loving this movie. I remember laughing at the scene where he's sitting on the back of a truck with his hands on his knees. It really made him seem human and really made me empathize with him.
This review exemplifies why Monster Madness stands out from other types of horror movie reviews. James is such a master at finding hidden gems and sharing why you may (or may not) love them. It's something that's definitely going to be missed next October.
that might be because more often not the original is better (see psycho). why remake good movies rather than remaking bad movies that had the potential to be good
Mighty Joe Young is one of my personal favorites and I'm so glad to see you finally featured it, man. Congratulations on 10 amazing years of Monster Madness and I can't wait to see what you have in store for us next.
TV station WOR in NY played both kong movies and Might Joe Young every Thanksgiving for several decades. I faithfully watched these every year as a kid in the 1960's. My earliest recollection was at age 4 in 1957 watching the original Kong with my mom. I was terrified of the close up of Kong in which my mother assured me he would not come out of the TV. Might Joe Young is so endearing with Jill as a sweet child and a principled adult who loved her pet giant gorilla. The strength contest scene is timeless with the real strongmen of the 1930's and 40's including the wrestler - Swedish Angel and Primo Carnera, the 1933-34 world champion boxer. With my own 3 adopted orphans, there is nothing better than the orphan home scene with Joe as the hero.
Every Thanksgiving in the 1970s I would look forward to the triple feature of King Kong,Son of Kong and Mighty Joe Young on W.O.R channel nine in New York.
Thanks James for giving this movie a great review. Perhaps some young people will watch it, I grew up with this movie it played in New York every Thanksgiving holiday and some times on the Million Dollar movie.
I've always grown up with the 1998 remake by Disney. I rewatched it again and thought it was a nice little film thanks to a good director, score, visuals and actors. I may have to check this one out now. Been on my radar for a long time.
I own this trilogy, and it is indeed a classic of the genre. Mighty Joe Young was easily one of my mom's favorite films when I was growing up in the 60s and 70s.
I'm loving what your doing this year James. Been looking forward to this all year, I'm really happy that your going all out this year, keep up the good work! :)
When I was a kid I had to stay home from school because I was sick and this was the afternoon movie. I fell in love with Joe that day. To me he is mightier than Kong because he has more character. Love all these old monster movies. Something really sweet about them.
Its cool in this day and age that some folk still appreciate the roots and old films. The industry today is a joke. Churning out rubbish designed for the least common denominator. Keep up the good work James!!
I haven't seen this movie since I was little on VHS tape from my grandparents. I remember seeing the remake in the theaters with my grandparents when I was like 5 years old. It was okay. But it has been a long time. I need to re-watch both movies to refresh my memory.
Also involved with this film was legendary filmmaker John Ford, who was an uncredited executive producer. (Though he tried to intervene a little more than Shoedsack wanted and there was some conflict over that.) This one's really charming and the effects won O'Brien an Oscar.
Ain't actually seen this film myself (or, now I come to think if it, any of the Kong films for that matter...), but I gave this RUclips vid a thumbs up simply cos I like James' review style, and love the Cinemassacre channel as a whole. Keep up the good work 👍
I remember watching Mighty Joe Young when I was a little kid. Maybe it was on HBO or maybe WGN or AMC when they used to play classic movies. I don't know for sure but I think they made sequels...either that or there was a colorized version because I remember seeing a Mighty Joe Young in color. Of course, I was like 7 or 8 years old so maybe my memories of the 1970s King Kong blended with Mighty Joe Young.
What Zaphod said. Joe was always in the 'misunderstood' camp, much more than Kong. The remake hits similar notes, but IMO it went way too far with the sentimentality. As films these days tend to do.
As a boy, I think I enjoyed this film at least as much as I did King Kong. Son of Kong was pretty cool too, although I had no idea what a quickie rip-off of a sequel it was. It was amazing just the same. But Mighty Joe Young was warm. Kong was amazing, son of Kong was cute & Joe was one you'd want as a friend.
Something I forgot to mention from the past few videos. I would complain that your not using actual footage like you usually do. However since you show so many pictures and you give us great detail, I'm fine with it.
Saw this on Svengoolie; it was great. The cowboy support character is so useless - "Ah know how ya feel, Joe." Knowing the same team worked on Kong makes me want to see that too asap.
Considering this was a giant monkey movie, I expected this film to end in a very specific way, and I was pleasantly surprised when they decided to not do that thing.
Day 8, James is still not aware that he's wearing a tiny hat.
Thanks to your comment I noticed it
ijust noticed that
ehh it suits the season
Shhh don't tell him.
plot twist, James did that on purpose
James is so enthusiastic about this movie that he really got me wanting to watch it by the end of the video.
Ameto i feel as if he wants a pet giant ape because of this movie
That guy looks like Jay Jonah Jamison from Spider Man.
I was thinking the same thing. Possible inspiration?
he does
I was thinking of the same thing throughout the video.
+Paul Beenis the Parrot
HAHAHAHAHAHA!
Oh, you're serious...
Evan Blenkinsopp let me laugh ever harder
AHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA
Loving monster madness this year
James seems so happy doing it this year and really putting in the presentation. Good job James!
This is one of my all time favorite films. I especially like the little quirks they gave to Joe, like punching the ground with his fist when he gets frustrated instead of lashing out. It helps convey his gentle nature.
Holy crap even by today's standards the sets, and scenes are amazing.
Man, this review really takes me back. My mother absolutely loves this film, I love it, and the ending is absolutely incredible (it's been two decades since I've seen this and I STILL tear up thinking about the ending). Stellar job here, James.

I wonder what he thought of the 1998 remake.
I liked that one.
He should review it!
I've never seen it but man that trailer was on a LOT of Disney VHS in 98-99.
that might be because more often not the original is better (see psycho). why remake good movies rather than remaking bad movies that had the potential to be good
do you know that that thing is at the end of each video?
This movie has the smoothest stop motion I’ve ever seen in any movie ever!
Aw man. I adore this film. I did as a child when my step father showed it to me and still do to this day. That orphanage rescue! Amazing film.
Mighty Joe Young is one of my personal favorites and I'm so glad to see you finally featured it, man. Congratulations on 10 amazing years of Monster Madness and I can't wait to see what you have in store for us next.
1:07 Harambe saving little boy that fell into the pit (circa 1949).

no joke Mighty Joe Young is one of my favorite movies of all time
Mine too :)
I love Monster Madness!! JAMES!!! Please don't stop it!!
Man... don't let this be the last Monster Madness. I'd miss it too much. I don't think I'm strong enough to handle a MM-Less Halloween.
+ganymedeIV4 did you watch the video? He said it wouldn't be right closing mm out without talking about mighty joe young
link me ? so hese still doing monster madness but with less videos next year? I dont know..
Welcome to 2020
Every Thanksgiving in the 1970s I would look forward to the triple feature of King Kong,Son of Kong and Mighty Joe Young on W.O.R channel nine in New York.
I need this all year long, really entertaining!
"spectacular melee" I love that description
No Harambe jokes in the comments, so refreshing
I saw one while scrolling down here.
you are a Harambe joke
#dixout
the comment above yours is a harambe joke lmao
I remember seeing this movie on TV about 10 years ago. It really is a very good film.
Thanks James for giving this movie a great review. Perhaps some young people will watch it, I grew up with this movie it played in New York every Thanksgiving holiday and some times on the Million Dollar movie.
I think Tim Burton's remake of Dumbo took inspiration from Mighty Joe Young, a true testament of how great a film it is.
Ernest Chode-sack. That's a hell of a name
I've always grown up with the 1998 remake by Disney. I rewatched it again and thought it was a nice little film thanks to a good director, score, visuals and actors. I may have to check this one out now. Been on my radar for a long time.
I never knew Mighty Joe Young was a remake. I loved watching that movie as a kid. This sounds very different, but I might love it all the same.
This review is dedicated to Harambe, isn't it?
#DicksOut
Harambeeeeeeee! Whyyy! :'V
DELETE, DELETE, DELETE, DELETE!!!
weird to think that way back in 1949 people showed up with their dicks out to get revenge for a different gorilla. history repeats itself
I own this trilogy, and it is indeed a classic of the genre. Mighty Joe Young was easily one of my mom's favorite films when I was growing up in the 60s and 70s.
Great review once again! I always seem to find something new watching your monster madness reviews. Cheers!
Man, I am just loving this 90s video rental store set. It must feel good to use after all of the work put into it.
Thanks for all the gems I have been missing out on!
To me, from a technical standpoint, the most impressive scene is the 3rd act...
But that nightclub scene is amazing too!
I'm loving what your doing this year James. Been looking forward to this all year, I'm really happy that your going all out this year, keep up the good work! :)
Great movie, a solid 9/10. Fantastic review 10/10. Monster madness is the best :)
I love these videos . I could listen to James talk about anything even math and I hate math.
saw this movie when I was 8, loved it ever since. wish more people knew about it, incredibly underrated!
Might Joe Young is a film I watched thanks to my Dad. There's a lot of the older sci-fi/horror that he insisted I watched growing up.
Your dad was a very wise man!
KRhetor
I'd have to agree with you there. ; )
I never knew about this movie; but after hearing so much praise, I've marked it down to watch it some day. Thanks, James!
Really loving the picks for this year, keep up the awesome work!!
MONSTER MADNESS!!! you guys do the best movie reviews on the web.
When I was a kid I had to stay home from school because I was sick and this was the afternoon movie. I fell in love with Joe that day. To me he is mightier than Kong because he has more character. Love all these old monster movies. Something really sweet about them.
It's like Carl Denham gets to redeem himself here by helping to get the animal back where he belongs. The stop-motion lions are impressive.
seems like James love this movie so much. What about the remake?
Its cool in this day and age that some folk still appreciate the roots and old films. The industry today is a joke. Churning out rubbish designed for the least common denominator. Keep up the good work James!!
This was my favourite movie of all time when i was a kid
I think I laughed harder than I should when he cuts to the screenshot on " But he does get a temper when he feels threatened"
Actually, James is mistaken. It was Ray Harryhausen that did the stop motion animation while Willis O'Brien was the supervisor.
Thanks James. I never thought to watch the original but I'll put it on the list. Good vid.
i remember this movie. they used to play it on disney channel.
You're thinking of the remake that Disney made
I haven't seen this movie since I was little on VHS tape from my grandparents. I remember seeing the remake in the theaters with my grandparents when I was like 5 years old. It was okay. But it has been a long time. I need to re-watch both movies to refresh my memory.

This one's really charming and the effects won O'Brien an Oscar.
That's why Ben Johnson acted in this movie, He was under a personal contract to John Ford.
Ain't actually seen this film myself (or, now I come to think if it, any of the Kong films for that matter...), but I gave this RUclips vid a thumbs up simply cos I like James' review style, and love the Cinemassacre channel as a whole. Keep up the good work 👍
Every time I watch King Kong, I always have to follow up by watching Mighty Joe Young. A movie my dad and I watched a hell of a lot of times
Thanks for the recommendation! I have purchased the trilogy on DVD! It is on the way!
I've always loved this movie. :-)
Incidentally, i have listened to a lot of stone temple pilots recently. IT ALL COMES TOGETHER.
Koettnylle rip Scott Weiland
I recall renting this movie one time at my local video "Network Video" . I don't think I ever sat through the whole thing, but I liked what I saw.
I haven't seen this film in years, but after your review, I gotta watch it again.
I actually like 1998 remake. At the very least it introduced me to this classic.
Robert Armstrong is clearly J. K. Simmons, proving once and for all the existence of immortals (or possibly vampires)
Got to watch this one, looks indeed like a masterpiece
I remember watching Mighty Joe Young when I was a little kid. Maybe it was on HBO or maybe WGN or AMC when they used to play classic movies. I don't know for sure but I think they made sequels...either that or there was a colorized version because I remember seeing a Mighty Joe Young in color. 0:57 Ghost? Demon voice in the background?? O_o
Stomach rumbling?
Wait there was a Mighty Joe Young in 1949? And it was a monster movie? Man Disney changed things in the remake
The remake's a bit more saccharine, but Mighty Joe Young was never a monster movie.
What Zaphod said. Joe was always in the 'misunderstood' camp, much more than Kong. The remake hits similar notes, but IMO it went way too far with the sentimentality. As films these days tend to do.
Always wonder why I always looking forward for reviews in October. Oh well.
hi there, don't know why, but I enjoyed this video more than your other ones. very cool. 😀 👍 👍
My fave as a young kid in the 80's
As a boy, I think I enjoyed this film at least as much as I did King Kong. Son of Kong was pretty cool too, although I had no idea what a quickie rip-off of a sequel it was. It was amazing just the same. But Mighty Joe Young was warm. Kong was amazing, son of Kong was cute & Joe was one you'd want as a friend.
Something I forgot to mention from the past few videos. I would complain that your not using actual footage like you usually do. However since you show so many pictures and you give us great detail, I'm fine with it.
Oh thank goodness. As long as you approve...
pr0xy by proxy of course
Oh okay.
Love this film! Very touching film.
James should review the 1998 Disney remake of Mighty Joe Young. It's very underrated, It uses practical effects on Joe.
I saw the remake when I was a kid, didn't know it was a remake until today
i had no idea that 1998 disney movie was a remake of a older movie. O.o
I don't like the nerd anymore, but do I love hearing James talk about movies. especially horror films.
I'm a huge classic film buff but I'm not gonna lie. I had never heard of this 1940s version only the late 90s film. I must go find this
I was a big fan of King Kong when I was a little kid. I had way more appreciation for Mighty Joe Young growing up, though.
Poor Joe. Such a rough life.
James should cover the Mighty Joe Young sequels and remake for the Kongathon.
Love mighty joe young!
i hope james will review train to busan in monster madness x
I've only seen the Disney remake, but I'll check out this one for sure.
Saw this on Svengoolie; it was great. The cowboy support character is so useless - "Ah know how ya feel, Joe." Knowing the same team worked on Kong makes me want to see that too asap.
Loved this movie when they played it on UHF re-runs when I was a kid. Better than Kong even.
Considering this was a giant monkey movie, I expected this film to end in a very specific way, and I was pleasantly surprised when they decided to not do that thing.
gonna need to watch this when I get it
Awesome! I gotta see this!
I always felt this movie was ahead of it time.
Good Pick, I love this movie.
"Closing out monster madness" it really is ending.... I do have a heart, cause now I feel it breaking.
I completely forgot about this movie I never got to see it.
Good movie saw this film when I was 23 in 2007 on dvd👻
What are those noises at 0:57 and 0:59? Am I going crazy or are other people hearing this. Regardless, I'm loving monster madness thus far this year.
This seems amazing.
One of the wrestlers was Tor Johnson
you cant do this to us james!!dont stop monster madness!!
I wish he talked about the remake from the 90's. I was curious what he thought about that one...
I seen the remake a few times. James should have quickly mentioned it.
I actually have a special edition DVD with the 3 movies.
