Star Wars: The Clone Wars is a 2008 American computer-animated epic space opera film directed by Dave Filoni, produced by Lucasfilm Ltd. and distributed by Warner Bros. Pictures. It is the first fully animated film in the Star Wars franchise and takes place shortly after Episode II - Attack of the Clones, at the start of the titular Clone Wars. In the film, Count Dooku and Jabba the Hutt's uncle Ziro orchestrate a plan to turn Jabba against the Galactic Republic by framing the Jedi for the kidnapping of his son. While Anakin Skywalker and his newly assigned apprentice Ahsoka Tano attempt to deliver the child back to his father, Obi-Wan Kenobi and Padmé Amidala lead separate investigations to uncover Dooku and Ziro's plot.

3:57 Ironically, Doug was exactly right when he said that the movie felt like it was a few episodes clumped together into a full movie -- because that literally is what the film is. Dave Filoni and the writers wrote a 3 episode pilot with a 1 episode prequel to it (that's what that battle at the beginning is all about), and then George Lucas requested to take all of it and forge it into a full movie to release into theaters.

    • @louis8487
      @louis8487 Год назад +1

Not to be overly cynical but there's no way Doug wasn't aware that it was a multiple episode arc glued together for a movie. It's common knowledge that the movie was made that way. He just framed it in the way he did to make a coherent video essay.

Same. I was a kid, a fan of star wars, so I went to the movies to see it. I didn't find it exceptionally good, but I liked it fine. Ironically, it would be many years before I watched the clone wars series, and with less enthusiasm at first, as I wasn't a kid anymore and the prequels (and this film, which didn't leave me with a lasting impact) had faded a bit in my memory. I liked the clone wars series more and more with each passing season though.

Fun fact: if it weren't for this movie breaking even at the box office at 16 million, we wouldn't have the TV series. Its likely because of this movie that has allowed Star Wars to flex it's franchises universe to this day. This was the first movie I saw in cinema's as a kid and I remember walking out, straight up enjoying it and I will always have a fond memory and appreciation of it. Actually the introduction of Asajj Ventress (as well as General Grievous) was in the previous Clone Wars 2D animated series made up (initially) of 3-5min animated shorts and is where we see the trails of Anakin to accends from Jedi Palawan to Jedi Knight as we see on the 3D animated Clone Wars. And the last short end almost directly right before the start of Episode III.

  • @AussieDragoon

They did motion capture for the fight between Ashoka and Maul. They even got Ray Park back to reprise the role. You can’t tell they didn’t mean for this to be on the big screen. I feel like they may have planned to announce it while the season was streaming and give it a limited theatrical release before putting it on Disney+. It's episodes from two different arcs clumsily stitched together.
You have the climax of the Christophisis Arc (which we saw begin with Cat & Mouse and The Hidden Enemy) stitched onto the Jabba's Son Arc.
When viewed chronologically as two separate Clone Wars arcs, it's not bad.
But it absolutely should not have been a film.

And her introduction is much, much more badass in the other clone wars than in this movie, with a fight scene in a coliseum with what are basically gladiators, to prove her power. There was no Ashoka in the other clone wars however.

And, if I remember correctly (it's been forever since I saw it - don't remember if I saw it more than once, and that was at a cheap matinee showing), it's also where Rex first makes the comment to Ashoka about "experience tops everything" when her still bratty side tried to pull the "I out-rank you _and_ I'm technically older than you" commentary. Watching that relationship actually develop in the series was a wonderful pay-off to having watched that rather cringe-worthy start.

Ironically, the points you brough up about the pacing being way off and how it felt like 3 episodes of the show stitched together were a result of the movie literally being a combination of the original first 3 episodes of the series. Lucas thought that it would be a good idea to combine them to make a movie, but as a result to pacing was way off.
The battle on the crystal planet was supposed to be the pilot and it would've focused on Anakin teaching/meeting Ahsoka for the first time and the next 2 episodes would've been a 2 parter about Jabba's son which explains why they didn't fit together narrative wise.

Honestly, it does feel like they could have taken any other plot from season 1 and turned that into the movie instead and it would have come out better. The reason it feels like a bunch of episodes strung together is because that's precisely what it is. Specifically that battle at the beginning is the Battle of Christophsis, which we actually see parts 1 and 2 of in the show: "Cat and Mouse" with the cloaked ship and the spider guy Admiral Trench, and "The Hidden Enemy" with a clone traitor, and what is chronologically the first appearance of Ventress on this show. From there, you'd get the beginning of the movie, and I think one episode was going to be called "The Padawan". And I'm not even sure if it was going to be the season's first story arc. Everything with Rotta the Hutt (yes that's his name) was another arc that would have happened later.
For whatever reason, George thought the animation looked good enough to be on the big screen. It....didn't. It's great compared to other TV CGI series at the time, but the film does not hold a candle to anything companies like Pixar were doing. Hell, just on my computer screen it looks unfinished in some spots. And of course to make a movie all of a sudden, it required restructuring written episodes into a film where you can still see the lines between each arc.
Also, Samuel L. Jackson voices Mace Windu in this as well. Terrence Carson voices him in the series.

You were right to feel like it was a lot of episodes put together. Because it is. They were already well into production of the series when George Lucas saw test footage. He liked it so much that he decided to have the show introduced in the form of a feature film. Because the decision to do a Clone Wars feature film was an eleventh hour decision, they took four episodes and meshed them together to make the runtime feature length. The first fourth of the film was meant to be called “The New Padawan”. The other three fourths with Jabba’s son was meant to be a three episode ark called “Castle of Deception”, “Castle of Doom” and “Castle of Salvation”.

  • @brianalambert1192

Yeah, these were supposed to be four separate episodes and Lucas said to the team at the last minute, make it a movie. My understanding is that some of these didn't even connect in the way they were originally supposed to be released.
And yes, when the plot revolves around a baby Hutt you've already got a problem. I cringe every time I hear the great Christopher Lee talk about Jabba's son, when you say that it's a pretty low bar.
Honestly, with where it started, this show proves that you can recover from anything. The show started with the prequels, which people already didn't like, decided to do an animated series, which people normally reserve for children and don't take seriously, and then had this movie that was ripped apart at the box office. It's amazing the show got as good as it did when it had this much working against it, and a lot of that credit goes to Lucas. He gave this show the support it needed, doling out his own money to make every episode. No joke, Lucas was losing money by making this show
