- After Watches & Wonders, we're all a bit exhausted by new watch releases, so we decided it was time to do something fun: Another fantasy watch draft. And this time, we're tightening the parameters to get some more variety on the table. So we've got show host and Hodinkee Editor, Tony Traina prompting Managing Editor Danny Milton, Lead Editor James Stacey, and Senior Producer Jonathan McWhorter to build a four-watch collection with him.
This week's episode is focused on favorite watches of the 21st century. Any watch available to purchase in the year 2000 or later was eligible, except for the new releases we saw at Watches & Wonders a couple of weeks ago. Here's the big rule: Once a watch has been picked from a brand, NO other watch from that brand can be picked (i.e., once someone has chosen a Rolex, no one else can choose a Rolex in any category).

I am trying to stay calm here... But the fact that Rolex was taken off the board... FIRST CHOICE... AS THE EXPLORER II. WHAAAAT?!??! (I say this all as someone who would choose a very unpopular spread though haha!) I'm surprised the Journe Resonance wasn't selected for the complications category. Loved Tony's pick in complications, deeply cool watches the 3670's and such a Tony choice... BUT MAN, you've got the world of complications with Patek! It hurt my heart a LITTLE BIT to see so many chronographs. NOT EVEN SPLIT CHRONOS?! Dream a little here! Ok. I think I need to go outside and touch grass now. Great episode guys! This got me dreaming!

My 4 (Taking only 1 from each team): AP Perpetual calendar, FP Journe, JLC Chrono, Lange (THAT DIAL)
James loses for me due to a rather bland palette here. Love the JLC chrono but the rest are meh choices from the brands.
Tony CRUSHED this assignment. The FPJ is a grail watch for even wealthy collectors, and the Bulgari Octo is one of the coolest watch designs in years.

I will blow your minds with this one-Tudor black bay heritage sub with serti dials, especially the silver diamond dial that was done on the black bay models a year ago.

Also love that Danny leveraged everyone’s hate for the moon swatch to get them to agree that it was a budget watch. purists will never allow themselves to call it an omega 😂

The Patek pick was a drop the mic pick, that's a model Jean Claude Biver has. I never saw that pick coming.
If I may make a suggestion: next time figure out the rules before recording. All the talk about the rules detracted from what was an otherwise enjoyable show.

No collection with a Rolex or a Moonswatch is going to win for me, so I'll go for Tony's although the conventional dial on the Octo would be sooooo much better

I think Jonathan will win with the Explorer 2 (and an overall well balanced collection) but my vote goes to Tony. I'm surprised not to see more independent watches (no UN freak ??) and that FP journe seals the deal for me. James has too many dive watches and Danny has too much blue to get my vote.
Jonathan #1, hands down! The VC and the Lange are class picks. Would have gone elsewhere with the Rolex, but agree the collection should reflect the collector. Tony takes #2 because I need that Patek. Danny was a close #3 with that lacquer Santos, and the AP was cool but wish someone had gone with the aventurine perpetual calendar 1159 instead of an RO. Sorry James :) surprised nobody went with a 50 Fathoms for sports? Anyway, that's my 2 cents.

That might be the worst number 1 pick since LaRue Martin. When I heard someone we have been waiting for - I was thinking SJP and then we he said Jonathan McWater - that might have been lowest point in the history of Hodinkee Radio. The drafts don’t work without SJP, Ben, Jack etc because these guys just pick weird random watches that none of them would ever be interested in. Weakest draft episode to date.
