    I was never a fan of this channel purely because the builds required way too much money to do, they weren't relatable. It is nice to see these builds although being an entire channel/shop revolved around these is hard to watch over and over. BUT this video alone about Stage 1 was extremely relatable with the preventative maintenance and replacements. Not exactly how-to's but a great laundry list of things people at home can do to keep their rigs running, especially great Toyotas. I look forward to seeing Stage 2 and similar video-content in the future because I legitimately think you guys are on the right track to broaden the channel's content for variety to attract more viewers!

      Most people in this economic climate will not be buying new vehicles, due to the astronomical expense. This build makes perfect sense for the majority of enthusiasts with an older; but, legendary Toyota! This is probably why I subscribed! I do give some credit to Last Line of Defense! He also does great builds! Thank you all! Take good care!

    No lower ball joints? Maybe I missed it. For those of you who don’t know, the ball joints fail catastrophically on these trucks, it’s very important to check them for play on a regular basis and replace them with OEM LBJ’s ONLY on an as needed basis.

    I got a 97 4x4 4R: Good build! Please install OEM lower ball joints and a radiator (Denso works fine) to avoid pink milkshake. Install OEM alternator brush kit and starter contacts into the existing alternator/Starter. A/M parts FAIL! Install the A/C idler bearing 6203 (avoid A/M), had the 4R since 2009 and it is in pristine condition. Did all OEM bushings all around. I have 2 drive shaft in my shopping basket for my 100 LC and after seeing you do the shaft, I now want to purchase those shafts for LC as it is my long distance vehicle. Any A/M Cv's are junk! (the inboard splines wear out in less than 15K miles). Best would be to reboot the OEM CV's. Keep an extra ignition coil pack, 2-3 fuel injectors. TPS. If you plan to do the rear axle bearings/selas pelase follow TIM's video on RUclips (pay attention to the Sharpie test on ABS tone ring retainer: if didn't mount properly, oil will leak again) Good Luck!

      I think it severely missed the budget part of the budget build. They were already 8 grand into it not counting the cost of vehicle and engine repair cost, and the only overland parts that were installed was diff bushings and a 4 grand ICON set. Which is the opposite of budget suspension

    • @scubbarookie
      @scubbarookie Год назад

      If you consider how this 3rd gen is being built, it is a good step in the right direction. Mainly, because it is a Pan-American expedition build. The budget is in the consideration of the long haul; eventually an ultimate build, for Overlanding. The suspension seems to be one of the biggest expenses, if your a serious enthusiast! I'm just glad to see this build finally! Lol. Take good care out there!

  • @jdwedge8044
    @jdwedge8044 2 года назад +1

    Something to consider for future projects . Any bushing or suspension thru bolt should be torqued with the full weight of the vehicle , wheels and tires on the ground or a four poster drive on hoist.
    It's not always easy to do, but doing it with the full weight of the vehicle will prevent the bushings from twisting which eventually leads to cracks and failure .

  • @Tanner731
    @Tanner731 Год назад

    I agree with the napa CV rationale for a vehicle that is going to remain in the US but you should have used the extended travel cv that allows you to use the full range of your lifts travel without binding up and breaking like the others do at full droop on an aftermarket coilover

    Poor advice on doing a diff drop. Yes they can solve CV angle problems, but they also introduce other compromises. Go look on TacomaWorld at the front diffs that got killed from doing diff drops. Just don't lift an IFS like a monster truck and you'll be fine without it. What is easier to replace when you are far from home on an expedition: an entire front diff housing, or CV axles/boots? Which is easier to keep spares of?

    • @4xRoadDirt
      @4xRoadDirt 2 года назад +2

      Agreed. There is some worthy debate on 1st gen Tacos and 3rd gen Tacomas but they are a waste of time and potential point of failure on newer gens just to drop the CV maybe 1cm when you look at how the geometry changes.
      I’m also bummed at using por15. So many better rust preventive coatings out there that won’t potentially peel off.

    • @adamscottmartin
      @adamscottmartin 2 года назад

      @@notrelavent So basically if someone does a band-aid "fix" of a front diff drop on a Toyota IFS to save money of doing it a better way, then logically they should also spend several thousand dollars doing manual hub conversions. That is your suggestion? We aren't talking about solid axles here, IFS is a whole different animal.

    I was building the truck over the 4 years. Every year I found thing that would get better thing as make easy and faster unfold to fold and ready to go. So there is no day it is done.I wonder this build it will be easy to buy 3 - 4 ears old 4 runners from florida, as all bushing will cost a fortune already for the cheap truck. I would say to build truck to ready for long haul - 30K at least.Just wheels and tire -~2.5 K, lift and budget struts - 2.5 K, RTT - 3 K, water tank, roof rack, and camping gear - 5 K, extra light - 1 K , navigation - 3 K, winch -700K, front bumper - 2 K, rear bumper - 1k and many things over time - tools, spare part, awning and ect - 10K.
    Good video shows don't do it, buy brand new truck and get a lift, drop box with kitchen and sleep inside your truck. See if you like it. If family then safe monet get a truck with bed, buy 1 K RTT, toilet tent and see if your wife likes this, before go with 30 K build.

      This is not the point of the build! Go pay thousands for your new ride with car payments of over $700 monthly and then try and spend thousands more because: YOU CAN AFFORD IT! Not everyone can! I personally build my own rigs! This build takes us back to simpler times, with better components! This build is not for everyone! You can have your TRD Pro! Pay someone else to build it for you!

    Re bushes: If a original Genuine or OEM part is the better thing to fit, why are you replacing all the bushes with polybushes that are more maintenence and higher likelyhood of being a problem? All the overland experts and active overlanders that I discuss this sort of thing with state catagorically "fit original spec parts, they work, they are tested, they last."

      We are not a credentialed shop, but we generally use some type of vibration to break seized bolts loose! This could be an air hammer or hammering a breaker bar to loosen things up. I would consult a local tech if it continues to be an issue

      @@ExpeditionOverland ok, thanks. that helps thanks for the info. People have told me to just use a blow tourch on it, but I know that will leave the metal weaker and more likely to strip the threads because of the metal being softer in a heated state after it cools
