Alright, now that the build’s underway, I need to start planning a family trip. Where’s the best place to take the family overlanding in Texas? Drop your suggestions below!

Big Bend National Park and Big Bend Ranch State Park are probably the best places to go in Texas.

It’s not Texas, but you should take a trip to Sedona AZ. Lots of beautiful places to take the Tim Kennedy Edition Land Cruiser.

Make trips out to utah and Arizona you can still offroad anywhere I think Texas is mostly private land so you need permission unless you're just doing the campground in a national park thing bit that's weak sauce. You want to actually use that rig.

All you really need is a rear bumper set up that allows you to carry gas, water cans and a tractor jack. A roof rack to carry tents, tarps and camo netting and camping stuff on top to keep your interior clean for food, gun & ammo storage. IMHO, No roof top tent. I'm in Appalachia so I need a chain saw and a fuel can with mixed oil/gas for the chain saw to handle trees that fall over trails. I like to hang the chain saw and gas/oil can on the rear bumper also to keep fuel fumes out of the cab.

"No more crazy Tim plans" Land Cruiser enters the screen. Hahaha. I've been building an overland Sequoia for a few years now and it's not even close. Expensive? Yup. 5 grand for suspension minimum so all of the extra stuff doesn't kill you going down the road. It's kinda like in DudeDads boat video "That'll be about a thousand". But it's so much fun.

Don’t do a rooftop tent it will make you top-heavy. Make sure you have front and rear lockers and quick disconnect for sway bars. You want to do complete skid plates underneath all the way from the front radiator to the rear gas tank. Don’t forget the chrome Molly axle shafts and Adams driveshafts. Take a look at patriot campers you can tow them behind the vehicle. They’re very light. They’re very rugged. They are made to beat off-road and then a bad situation. You can disconnect and leave it behind like a rooftop tent.

    • @nikolaisaint9137
      @nikolaisaint9137 4 месяца назад

Disconnecting sway bars are beneficial, but usually only warranted on hardcore crawling trails like the Rubicon. Most of the wheeling in Texas will be mild to moderate, the sway bars can stay on. If you want a set of disconnecting sway bars, check out Land Cruiser Phil's google website called Land Cruiser Products.
It's not necessary to have a full flat belly skid, this isn't a rock buggy. If you want a serious skid to protect the trans/t-case, check out Iron Pig Offroad or Slee. Delta VS makes good products as well. Your radius arms and rear links protect the rest of the car.
Don't skip the rock sliders. White Knuckle makes a good set. Keep your rocker panels in good shape. Metal Tech 4x4 sells sliders with catalytic converter protection as well (important for the 80 series)
You don't need chromoly shafts, they wear quicker, especially on a full time 4WD vehicle. The stock 30/27 shafts are plenty strong and can last 200k miles. They also don't make noise when they wear.
Unnecessary to upgrade a drive shaft unless the joints are failing or you're pushing 37"+ tires.
No comment about a tow behind trailer on a pig like the 80. If anything, you'll want to regear your diffs, maybe even the low range and high range in your transfer case as well. Overdrive/Underdrive your transfer case will be a smart move for a Do-It-All rig. 33"-35" tires will fit with a small amount of lift. That's the sweet spot.

You picked an excellent vehicle. Looking forward to seeing the build. I've had my 1996 Land Cruiser for several years and use it for camping and wheeling trails like the Rubicon. 40" tires look good on the Land Cruisers just saying and Icon makes the best suspension lift in my opinion

Welcome to the toyota world. Us in Hawaii were buying Toyotas back in the 70s and 80s when yall were into fords/chevys/dodges. Then when I deployed and seen everyone flipping out on the toyota overseas, it felt like home lol. Here in Hawaii we buy Toyotas because they are built well, engines/drivetrain last a lifetime, and they dont rust from the inside out. Being on an island with sea spray everywhere, off roading to go diving, fishing, hunting or camping, Toyotas could handle it the best compared to domestic trucks. I love my 86 landcruiser, 89 pickup (2wd single cab) and now 2024 trd tundra. Well, experienced my first negative thing with the tundra not having tow hooks and now dealing with the engine recall. I might just sell it and stay with the tried and true old school lol

Test it out in Marble Falls, then Big Bend in October. Through Las Cruces and Carlsbad Caverns NP to Taos and Red River then down through Palo Duro canyon and Caprock Canyon on the way home if you want to go a little farther.
Build a trailer up to go with it and haul gear so you can keep the inside for kids and keep it lighter.
You will need to obtain a dedicated truck gun. I’m thinking .308 AR or Benelli M4. Better yet, both.

Nicely bought, she looks great. Finding an 80 with a rear hatch that's not rotted out around the glass is rare.
Building your 80 is almost as fun as wheeling it. Triple locked and good tires will take you places you really shouldn't take your family- there were times where I was fairly certain I was going to wipe out three generations of my family in a single trail ride due to the stupidly capable nature of that truck.
Just do yourself a favor and never sell it- these trucks are like a Garand; they've got a soul that digs into you deep and won't ever get old.

While my character in my post-apocalypse/post-nuclear story I'm writing has a Land Cruiser, it's being towed by his survivalist's bus and going to be used for a "just in case we need to get out of here and leave the bus" scenario. It also has some customization, but not as much as his survivalist's bus. He worked on the bus while down in a bunker (there's a road leading into it) for 7 years before leaving (because reasons). There was plenty of supplies down there he was able to make use of, off-road tires, the roof of the bus has solar panels, a rack in the back of it that stores extra gas jugs, a 100-gallon diesel fuel tank (came with it already), the front has a snow plow, and the sides have extra metal plating for protection against pew pews, and places to store important supplies one would need on the road. The interior pretty much looks like an interior of an RV: small kitchen toward the front with a table big enough for 4 people to sit in), a small bathroom (one side is a shower and the other is for the toilet with a sink above it), a modern-style sleeper soda one of his kids can sleep on that's right behind the driver's seat, a bunk bed that's located above the driver and passenger seat for his other kid, and a small bedroom all the way in the back of the bus (which includes my character's small armory (he's a military vet).
