  • I was sent some giant pothos nodes from PottedPlantDreams and so I tried to propagate and grow it! It rooted nicely in a propagation bin and put out a giant pothos leaf. Growing Giant pothos is the same as regular pothos its all about the maturity. All pothos has the potential to get to this size it just needs a lot of vertical space! This one was from florida so it could grow up a tree! I hope you enjoy this unique view of pothos!

Unless you can get a top cutting it’s really hard to keep pothos from reverting to its immature form in some capacity, so the fact that you got such large leaves right from the beginning and managed to keep them is pretty dang impressive!

Yeah my go-to is to get a top cutting and hang it on the back of an aquarium that's got a mattenfilter. It'll start dropping roots pretty quickly. And the moment those roots hit the mattenfilter sponge (full of fish poo) the growth takes off. My aquariums are under plant lighting, too, which helps a lot.

It blows my mind how different pothos looks when it’s able to thrive in areas like Brazil or southern Florida. If you take one of those simple little golden pothos houseplants and plant it outside in ideal tropical conditions, it will eventually grow to that massive size.

Your nodes had 100% humidity in their prop box, so I guess they were a bit shocked to get planted into soil so soon 😁 my planted propagations from a prop box were a bit slow too. Some people say that you have to adjust them to their new, dryer conditions - raise the lid and give them a small gap at first, leave the box fully open later. I can understand that it can be tricky when someone has a bigger prop box that was a lot of stuff going on 😁 but that acumulating process do sound logic to me.

My theory for the smaller one not growing as fast:
    1) simply bc the piece was smaller and had fewer roots
    2) cutting the plant shocked it, and (both nodes) had to spend energy repairing their wound, sprouting new roots and new leaves all at once.
    3) the smaller node didnt sprout a leaf in the humidity chamber so was already behind; but lacking the full leaf means lacking energy income so would then grow even slower

I repotted my collection from plastic to terracotta this past summer, it seems I’m constantly watering yet everything is always dry, especially the very small pots. I’m concerned that the pro(= less prone to root rot) isn’t worth the con(=dries quickly, extreme wet dry wet dry soil as opposed to consistency in moisture, prone to hydrophobic soil). Doesn’t matter how big a node you start off with, unless you give it a way to cling and climb it will go back to thin stems and small leaves. It’s a survival tactic. A shoot falls off and roots into the ground. It’ll then send out shoots in all directions until it finds a tree it can climb to attain more sun.

Pothos are tropical plant so a good way to grow this plant would have been to put it in a container of water, and to sit it near a window, so that it can get lots of sunlight. That's why it had such amazing results in the propagation bins, and it dried up when you transferred it to a regular plant pot.

Awesome!!! Night temps are around 0 C ( 32 fahrenheit ) here in Japan. One small restaurant has a giant pothos with couple leaves outside in front the place ( other place has a monstera ). Maybe its the almost woody stem and thick leaves which helps them survive in freezing temperatures.

I have one REALLY giant golden photos climbing (and going down as well) in some of my açaí trees here in my backyard. It's really common here where I live (Amazônia brasileira) but I believe mine is beautiful than any other, hehehe!
It gave some leaves longer than 80cm and with fenestrations (inside the leaf) equals to those of adults monstera deliciosa!
I can propagate in any size I want hehehe!

@@TechplantChannel If you start selling it, definitely let us know. I love that geometric design. Would also love to see a video about your process designing/fabricating it if you haven't already done one. In particular the pros/cons of different designs and their stability is really interesting.
I use leca/pon and semihydro for a majority of my indoor tropicals and the moss pole/climbing options are pretty limited, unless you go with something like a plank. You would think with self-watering systems it would be simpler to keep a moss pole moist long-term. Very interested in hearing more!
