- Today I will show you how to propagate a pothos houseplant by node cutting. I show how to easily propogate golden pothos, but this can be done with most other plants as well! Of course there are some exceptions. Anyway, I prefer to propagate plant cuttings in sphagnum moss using a propagation box! propagation sphagnum moss propagation box propagation station

Thanks so much for the video. I only knew how to do it the one cutting in water way. I didn’t know you could do it like this. I’m learning so much about plants that I never knew and I’m 66 years old. Didn’t have an interest in them until I retired. Too stressed out working and driving every day. I’m really enjoying this time of my life and learning new things.
Welcome to the plant world! I’m happy you’re enjoying them 😊 thank you for watching!
i hope you have a nice and relaxing retirement!!
do the satin pothos cutting in moss have to be enclosed in a plastic wrap no holes / plastic bag? and does it have to be left open or completely closed???
Hi I'm new to your channel and I'm loving the way you propagate your cuttings I was wondering how to go about doing that I have a satin pothos as well is starting out very beautiful and full when I first bought it during cold season that we've had it kind of wilted my leaves on the plant so I remove the bad leaves my stems are still healthy and strong I have three long stems each one of them has leaves at the end and I was wondering how do I go by Saving this plant in cutting the stems to make new growth to get it back to being a full bushy plant so now I watch your video I'm going to try that and can't wait for the outcome
would love an update on that pothos in a few months
Yesterday I brought my friend a plant I had propagated from my sparkly tradescantia zebrina :) I think these plants make for the loveliest gifts because you put your patience and time in them.
Thank you so much, I know a lot of people like to gatekeep info like this so this is really appreciated
Seeing Golden Pothos wet sticks was kinda funny to me tbh
Hahaha me too TBH 😂 I just thought they’d be a relatively quick one to show the process
it's very helpful towards my plants that are consisting giving stem without any leafs! 😂😂😂
Hahaha same here! Frustrating at times, but hey! Perfect excuse to propagate 😂
I'll be honest I still won't be intentionally plucking healthy leaves off of nodes 😂 but this is really awesome for when plants get leggy and there are already a bunch of leafless nodes!
Yep, can’t get myself to pluck off healthy leaves either.
I jumped into this when someone gave me a long nearly leafless exotica stem. Wasn’t exactly sure what to expect but I’m happy to say it’s working! This video just showed me what to do once I get a leaf, so ty! I have to say I’ll get a lot out of that free , Mile long and nearly lifeless vine in a pot of crispy dry dirt, lol. Very satisfying indeed. ❤️🌱
Hi I’m Megan I’m ten years old I love plants and your videos I’m hoping to get a pothos any suggestions of pothos I would be so thankful for !
Hi Megan! Thank you very much!! My favorite pothos are good ol’ golden pothos 😊
Thank you
I love your monsteras there super cool one of my wish lists I over water some of my plants but I couple weeks ago I got a peace Lilly it was quiet cheep so I’m very happy x
I love how passionate you are about plants alread. I got my first pothos at age 7 and I still have babies from that original pothos all over my house!
@@sarahwbs that’s amazing I was looking at a golden pothos today online I was really interested in getting it but I made myself wait lol :)
I will never get tired of a good propagation video with growth updates
Tfs Harley .
I’m in Florida and found Giant wild Golden Pothos - so exciting .
The ones up high on the tree have fenestrations !
I had to go back in my history to find this video. This is amazing informant and this method works perfectly! So I currently have 4 stems sitting in a shallow clear bowel on a paper towel that's wet with water and a few drops of plant food. It's been about 3 weeks and the yes! I have baby leaves now. This method worked great on some store bought garlic as well.🤭👏🏾
I always keep the leaves on until the roots start to form and the first new leaf starts to sprout, then I remove the leaves so the plant can focus all energy into the new roots and fresh new growth😊
That’s a good strategy too!!
@@HarliG Thank you!!
The leaves are not a drain. They literally produce energy in the form of sugars to power growth. To me it's completely counter productive to remove them and expect this to improve growth. It has the opposite effect; it will slow it down. Ps; I'm a horticulturist that studied plant science. It's frustrating to me to see this advice everywhere and the assumption that leaves are a drain to be removed completely from cuttings. There is some dehydration from leaves which is why we often reduce leaf area when taking cuttings, so that the dehydration is reduced while awaiting new roots to rehydrate the growth, but that is the only reason to reduce leaf growth on cuttings. Clearly all methods work in the end due to the vigour and pure will to live from plants, but it isn't helpful to reduce the part too much that actually makes the sugar from photosynthesis. sorry, rant over. this really bugs me, lol!
@@finflwr well, first things first... Thank you. That was actually extremely informative!! I am not a horticulturist but love studying plants in propagation and anything to do with Horticulture and have been "amateurly"(i know thats not a word lol) doing so for about 8 years now... I keep the leaves on until Roots grow and a new Leaf starts to sprout, and then I will take off the original Leaf from the node. I'm going to see if you have a channel because if you do I will be subscribing 😂💚
@@TeffyBabyy That's ever so kind of you, lol!
This made so much sense to me. I’m one of those who water propagate with just one stem. So I must try this!! I want fuller plants! Love this video!
I did this with cutting from a friends njoy and in 2 months I have a huge plant!
I love that you make fuller plants because that is what most people prefer :)
Harli, it was last year, I think, when I learned from one of your videos that you could propagate a node without a leaf. I was shocked. Now I propagate both ways but I must admit that watching a leafless node grow roots and leaves is so satisfying. Thank you for sharing. Also, Thank you for being one of the minority of plant tubers who will mention ways to drive plant prices down. I'm sure there are many people who are upset with Costa Farms for mass producing highly desired overpriced plants. But that's how I was able to obtain the ZZ Raven, through Costa Farms.
I have a cebu blue pothos because of them! They’re not super cheap, but still cheaper than paying $5 for one node
Again, this makes me wanting to propagate more plants :D 🌱
SUPER helpful! And I think you’re humble opinion is VERY valuable! This manner instead of the string of leaves direct into water was what I needed to understand ~ thank you!!
Super helpful! I just this afternoon stuck a long pothos cutting in water, but I’m gonna re-route and go your way tomorrow! Thank you!
I love propagating this way too. So fun watching new leaves come out in the prop box!
I have been kind of hesitant to use s. Moss to propagate, but after watching your videos i think im ready to try! Thank you for such informational and inspiring videos 🥰
I'm a beginner when it comes to propagation, but I also prefer to have single leaf cuttings and plant several into one container to have a fuller plant. At the moment I'm propagating a golden pothos, I put all the individual leaf cuttings in water and was left with a few bare nodes. I don't have sphagnum moss, so let's see if I can get those to root in regular potting mix! I'm excited to see how the experiment goes ☺️. Thanks for the video! I also liked that you showed us the 1 month update, those tiny leaves look so cute! Have a nice weekend everyone ☺️🌱
I totally propagated a pothos this was recently and it is definitely my favorite way. It's so cute 🤩
After watching this video I’m definitely potting up all my cuttings from my prop box, I think it’s time!👌🏼 great video! 😊
Thank you Harli, I started prop this way. I'm soo happy to see the lil plants.
I went out and bought some sphagnum moss after watching one if your other videos. I have not tried to propogate in it yet, but after watching this video, Its inspired me to give it a go again! I love your videos, and have learned SO much from you!
Have tried it myself and it’s so satisfying 🌱
This was so helpful to watch the way you filmed it! THANKS 😀
I am a believer! How much nicer to have a fuller plant than longer water propagated strands!🤩😍.
Wow been doing the same to expand my collection with 100% success rate. Thanks for sharing knowledge to others. 😃
I’d loveeee to see a video like this of that scindapsus propagation progress!
I’ve been googling about this all weekend. Thank you 🙏🏻
I watched your video about your propagation boxes and got the moss recently. I had already put a monstera node in some soil and perlite, but transferred it to moss in a propbox. It has a small grow point when I left 6 days ago, now it has a leaf!! 😀 I'm very excited! It got too tall for the lid to fit, so now I've put a small plastic bag around it to form a dome. I'm going to travel for about 10 days, so hopefully the dome will keep the moisture up so it won't dry out and die when I'm gone.
Harly G, the simple gardener! thank you for your time... easy to follow videos
It was amazing even when I saw it with my own eyes. It really helped me a lot. Thanks
Thank you so much for the tip. Will definitely do these with some cuttings. So exciting!
I love videos like this! They are very helpful. Thanks 🙏🏾
I love this video ✨gave me inspiration to go propagate some more .
I think more people should propagating and sell ! It’s fun and I personally think it will help with the plant prices as well .
I haven’t tried this way yet, but you make it look so easy 🤗
Omg that top with the red flowers is so cute!! Love your videos!
I just propped some cuttings last night. Makes a lot of sense removing the leaves, never thought about that. Will try on my next prop. Great vid. Thanksn
This method has become my go-to for propagations after I saw your video on your prop box
I love videos like this! More informative videos are my favorite! Could you do a video on adding propagations to an existing plants?
Never knew this was a way to propagate! Always just did cuttings. Thanks for the valuable information. Am trying this with my Marble Queen. Hope to have multiple plants by the end of summer.
Love that little yellow pot!
Great! I’ve always wondered what to do with those pieces!
THIS IS SO HELPFUL! Thank you !!!! I’m about to go chop up some of my Monstera Peru (that I had chopped a LONG RUNNER and stuck in water)!! Thank you for posting this!!!
I just tried this before I even finished the video. I have been going crazy with the props lately. I hope it works for me!
Wow that is so amazing! Such helpful instruction.....⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Love your dress! Thank you for showing us the process.
Very good. I'm going to try this. Thank you.
Showing entire process very helpful , thanks 😁
Great tips! Thanks for sharing!
My dad told me last year to add a banana to stubborn growers, that it will help speed the process. I used a banana to save my pecan saplings
You’re so beautiful inside & out 💜☀️ Thank you for sharing your knowledge
Can we please get a propagations tour? I know you've done them in the past but it is so fun!
ALSO! How do you keep your prop boxes from molding when the lids are shut completely? I find stagnant air usually is where I go wrong
Yeah, same! And when some more thin leafs touches the moss it will rot. :-(
I am 1 week into trying this and the entire tray is very musky smelling.. I also think the lack of air circulation is the problem.
you can do a preventative hot bath, so sanitizing the container and the cuttings with hot water bath for a few minutes to kill potential fungi. and you can also use a fungicide (diy or store-bought)
i know this comment is a year old, but i mix a little hydrogen peroxide and water together and mist the cuttings with that instead of regular water.
golden pothos node props are such a funny concept to me but this is a great video!!
Hahaha I had to do the video with a fast propagating plant 😂
Love this type of video!! Ill watch all of these anytime haha
This is how I do it too! Except I don't take healthy leaves off. I can't bring myself to do that! 🤣
WOW so informative! I had no idea you could propagate this way and I've been looking to do so with my pothos, monstera and philodendron for a bit. the philo is going nuts at its' nodes, rooting already, etc. and I just needed to know how to properly cut them so I did not kill them during the initial propagation process. Thank you!
Omg you're so beautiful, that dress is amazing on you and I can't take my eyes off your pink nails... They look perrrfect
Thank you. I just did this! I can’t wait to see the growth!
Update??
Great tips! Thank you🌞✨💛
I just spend $60 on a sad (but very well rooted) philodendron rio. The lady I bought it off of was so nice! She welcomed me into her home, gave me a free cutting of something else, some soil, and also a long rooted stem with just nodes and no leaves. I'm so excited to propagate just the nodes but also nervous!
great video Harli❤️❤️
Thank you so much for making this video!!! Also I love your sundress♥️
Love this! Super helpful!
Just got some Monstera cuttings and I'm going to use this method. Wish me luck! 🤞🏾🍀
Great tutorial! I’m going to try it. You look beautiful BTW, little mama. Love the dress.
Excellent, even got hubby interested. Lol
I love photos👍😍Sending full my support..👍☘️💚
I love your channel Harli ❤
From this video i realized gardening requires patience... 😆
I love this method! I have just been sticking my single nodes in water with the leaf attached but might try leafless on sphag with a cover and see how it goes. Its the middle of winter here in Australia though so not the greatest time to be propping 😬😄
Just ran out & bought some Sphagnum Moss to try this. Just started taking cuttings off my night jasmine in soil & seem to have a
it really helped a lot
Easy to explain and good voice
I will come to watch the video, thank you :-)
Super helpful video!! Now I won’t throw those away :)
Loved this video!
Wonderful video per usual!! You know what!? I need your amazon page, seriously. Please put it in the description box. Thanks!
Drive them prices down baby!!! ❤️
I knoowwww my dream plant is a Cebu blue and I can’t find it anywhere and I refuse to pay what people are asking lol 🤣
@@LkRn09 My lowes got a Cebu the other day (ONE) and it was gone in two days
This method works really good with my swiss cheese plant!
very helpful, thank you!
I love this method especially for spares once I've trimmed cuttings, the problem is I keep forgetting what they are once they start to grow
Thank you for the video ! Your dress look so cute !
Thanks for sharing this!!😊😊❤️
This is super helpful! I usually just do the water prop method and I end up killing a lot of my cuttings 😅
You look great Harli! And what a cute dress!
this looks like fun
and here I was thinking you need at least 1-2 leaves on the cutting in order for the propagation to be successful... wow! I'm a little scared to try this but I definitely will
Thank you for this video,Can you do a care ,watering, and fertilizer video on the MONEY TREE.. Thank you Harli G
that bump though!! 💜💛🧡
I love this video!
Very helpful, thanks.
Great tactic, thank you!
Thanks for watching!
What can I substitute for spagnam moss
Awesome presentation. Thank you for the valuable information. Can you tell me how to propengate geraniums? Would it be the same way you've done with the pothos?
Thanks for the info!
I have also had success just tossing nodes in some water! Always cool to have some leaves sprout in water!!💚Do you re-water the sphagnum or is it good until leaves sprout?
I love your videos and plants. Do you have a video about spider mite prevention and your best way to get rid of them? And any other possible pests for house plants
