Here Im going to teach you the best methods and why you would choose one over the other when propagating pothos cuttings. Both methods work great but result in a different style pothos configuration. After watching this video you should have a better idea why you would choose either method.
Propagating Pothos is a fun way to gain additional plants and share with others.

I would say more at 10:48
that's so smart tho, A+ for ingenuity
Good eyes!!!!
it lost a lot of leafs... his plants in general are not so well doing...
Haha . . . Spoons get no respek . . .
I appreciate you actually showing the root propagation over time! most people show cuttings and no follow up!
Yeah that drives me nuts, its like the sole reason i started making plant videos!
Exactly! he is honest and shows and especially makes it clear it takes awhiiiiile before anything grows well hahaha
YESS!!!!!
I prefer the bunch in the pot
I agree! Thanks for showing all the details 😊
I can’t wait to try both methods! I want my bedroom looking like a jungle
You can do it! Good luck!
This is BY FAR, the most comprehensive video about pothos propagation out there, I bought Cebu blue cuttings from Etsy and followed his recommendations, the only thing I did differently was I used sphag moss, the growth has been explosive! Thank you so much, because of you I have a fuller, better looking pothos.
Do you mind me asking what is the sphagnum moss? Or if it improves the life of this specific plant?
@@letmelivemylife ^^
So this works for other types of plants and shrubs ???
100%!!! Straight to the point, very explanatory, super comprehensive! Excellent!
@@letmelivemylife It's just a type of moss. Benefits are that it provides a loose medium that retains moisture which is pretty good for root development.
Whenever I propagate something I'll do two special steps. 1)I'll cover the bottom half of the clear container because roots grow towards darkness and prefer it. 2) when the roots get long enough I sprinkle a little of the soil I'll be planting them in about a week before I plan on planting them
Interesting, it the soil part reminds me of how you acclimate fish to a new tank. Thanks for sharing and watching!
i have a phil & pothos in glass bottles, ive got clear ones, green and brown... sounds like an experiment awaiting...
You add soil to the water?
I saw this comment about a week ago and decided to change the pothos I had that weren't growing roots from a glass bottle to an opaque vase. Now all of my cuttings have roots! Thanks so much for your tips! I hope you have a great day.
Hi! Do you place your cuttings in indirect sunlight? I have mine in an east facing window.
This makes me want to run to my Grandma's to cut some of her pothos 😄
go go go!
I do that with my father-in-law's Pothos plants!! I made two pots of Pothos cuttings for him last year and they've been growing like crazy so every few weeks when I visit him I get a few cuttings so free plants for me!!😁
🤣🤣🤣💕
I’m gonna do that to my mom’s 😬
My garden is prt of my mother’s legacy. Even if it’s not one of her plants, gardening gives me an opportunity to tell others about her while she’s resting in God.s memory. John 5:28,29 is such a comfort to me.
I cut off a vine about 10 inches and planted it in a pot. Laid it down in a circle like a crown and asked for a blessing to the universe. 😂 It actually worked. It was touch and go some days, but now I have a crown of pothos.
wonderful!
your camera work is the best I've seen on this topic.
Thanks! I try to use all my photography gear to get some good closeups!
Wow, incredible of you to show the whole process and growth! The most helpful propagation video out there.
Thanks!
+++ So good.
"Tolerable to mistreatment" that's my kind of plant 😂 great video! I put mine straight into dirt last week and it seems to be doing ok so far.
Good job!
i never use soil to make new ones of these, it avoids rot,
Wish I could like this twice because of how comprehensive this is. Thanks!
Thanks for watching!
I have a ton of respect for your patience and integrity! Especially in the age where people want to get things out quickly
Thanks!
One day i repotted my pothos in one long vine, turned out i made them stressed and dried. So i cut the dead leaves and let the vine hanging up (i thought that it could be the guide for it to climb up). After few weeks, new leaves are growing from the nodes on the dried vine (which i thought was dead already!!) and forming new vine in new direction!! So do not waste the dried vine guys! Just keep water it and it will grow back 😁
Love that you show updates not just the initial process!
yeap, it used to drive me nuts when i look for a guide and they just show them chop a plant and then talk for 20min about nothing
These plants are truly blessings. Imagine the earth with none of these life giving plants and trees. Where would humans be?Always appreciate these small blessings
agreed! Thanks for sharing
the best pothus propagation video I've seen. thank you!!!!!
Glad it was helpful!
Shot glass, great idea to hold the leaves out of the water!! Pothos were one of the first plants I've propagated after I got into propagation and succulents! I love seeing how well their roots form, and a nice learning experience for the kids also... My children love planting and learning new tricks for each plant. I've been gardening and propagating for about ten years now and I don't see an end date any time soon lol... When the roots start to develop and they get the clear slime around them, I've tried leaving it (the slime) on, and also taking it off, and in my own experience, when I take off the slimy film, (very gently using a damp paper towel, pulling downward to the tip of the root) the roots seem to grow faster than when I leave it. A full 2 days sooner. Thanks so much for this video, it's very educational.
very interesting tip! Ill have to try it, thanks for taking the time and typing all this out. I hope when i have kids they like all this stuff too!
I went to the plant store today! I bought this nice mini bamboo plant, a zebra plant, and a marbled pothos! It has about 3 vines that are starting to trail and I’m so excited to grow this plant. It’s so full and beautiful and healthy! My mom got this super super full neon pothos and whenever it gets older I’m going to take some cuttings of that too
awesome! I hope it grows fast so you can take some clippings, good luck!
@@TechplantChannel I went gain one Monday and bought a string of pearls, pilea, and a croton bush (it’s so beautiful)
This is so great!! Thank you! I loved everything about this video. My only negative is that I wish I found this video first rather than wasting my time on all those others that didn't go near as detailed and comprehensive and encouraging!! This is my first time propagating and now I don't feel bad about my little cutting not looking so great. You saved my plant!! LOl!! I'm so glad I found your channel before throwing it out!! Thank you!!
Plants from grandmother's are always best
Kimberly Howard grown with love! ❤️
This was SO incredibly helpful! My friend gave me single leaf cutting and I was starting to worry that I wouldn’t get a flourishing plant. Seeing what happens over time gave me hope! My leaflings are definitely growing roots, just slowly.
I have a leaf right now 😅 you give me hope
IT's a tough plant, but my wife moved it into a dark bedroom after years of it thriving in the family room. It got almost no light or water, and I'm trying now to bring it back from the brink of death. If it survives, I'll start propagating it, and I never thought about that before until now.
Good luck!
Did it live?
Thank you, I learn't something new from your video, no one else compared the two methods of cutting the stem. I propogate & grow pothos alot and have a heavenly lush arrangement in my office and home. I prefer the dense, thick appearance as opposed to thin & leggy and I've learnt by experience that misting the leaves with water causes new leaves to sprout and I also place a glass dome on top of the plant pot when I have just inserted the cuttings. It creates a humid environment for the plantlings, I don't have to water, the cuttings establish themselves in no time and new shoots/leaves also sprout abundantly.
hmm, ill have to try the misting technique to get more branching! thanks for sharing that!
Techplant Hello! I was excited to share a new discovery about growing pothos in water. I cut several leaves just underneath the node and arrange them in an artistic bunch before immersing in a jar/vase of tap water. I even use elastic bands to keep them in bunches. I change the water every 3 days and this causes faster root formation. I recently used warm water from the tap and the roots and several new shoots of leaves formed even faster! I think it mimics the hot humid climates that pothos naturally thrives in.
Another thing I noticed is if the roots are somewhat constrained (in both soil and water containers) several new shoots of leaves are produced faster as apposed to roots growing in a larger roomier container.
Large, lush arrangements of pothos look so beautiful in the room and are psychologically so pleasing. Even visitors, colleagues in my office like to talk about the pothos!
That's an awesome tip! How long after planting cuttings do you typically start to see your first new leaves? I'm about 5 months into mine, and while they leaves look healthy for the most part, there's no new visible growth as of yet.
Dude, amazing. I literally just had to finally concede as prune my pathos plant and I was not happy about throwing the 2 vines in the bin. Just didn’t feel right because I love my plants. So I jumped on RUclips and the first tutorial I find and watch is this! So epic. Thanks so much! My plant wasn’t cut in vain 💛🙏
Good luck with propagating! I hope it roots quick!
I just started having my own pothos and saved it from rotting. It's only been rooted in the soil but it's bouncing back. Thank you for showing how you cut it and how you get bushy pothos. I also love how you added a follow up video on how the two methods work.❤
I LOVE the time you took to do this!!! Thank you! Exactly what I needed and answered all of my questions.
Im glad the video was useful! thanks for watching!
I agree, it’s so helpful and interesting to see the whole process! Thank you for taking the time and being so thorough. Easily the most helpful propagation video I’ve seen so far!
Thank you so much I really really enjoyed watching you create those cuttings into nice healthy plants. I really prefer the bushy method as it gives you more plants too. Please stay safe and well too xxxx Mags ❤❤❤❤
Thanks for the kind comment! Hope your planta grow well!
You're so cool. This is my first time cutting my pothos. I have 3 separate vines growing in one pot which kinda makes it a little fuller but I think I prefer this way the best. I'm giving the cuttings to a client of mine once they've got some good roots on 'em. Thanks! 👍
Awesome! Always neat to propagate and share with others! Good luck!
I appreciate how you kept things brief and concise. Thank you for your time and video.
I always had Pothos. Everyone of them😑 didn't like me. Now, I went out and bought 4. I am determined to grow them. Thanks for the video. Really helpful!
Espii J how’s it going with the pothos? :)
This is an awesome video on pothos! I had no idea what I was doing 😂 Thank you for sharing!!!
Glad it was helpful!
The roots are longer in the shorter clippings because the plant doesn't have to expend the energy to nourish the long vine, only a shorter, smaller plant. The longer vine doesn't need longer roots, as the entire vine is being nourished by several new roots. Also, once the long cutting is rooting, you can cut it and have several cuttings like in the other example.
yeap!
Actually, it probably is related to the fact that the single leaf cuttings are a plain green pothos, so with a lot of chlorofyll ergo growth power vs the bundle of marble queen which has a lot more varietion ergo is a weaker plant/grower.
I love pothos. They are so easy to take care of. I have one that is almost 40 years old!
Today seems like the perfect day to take some cuttings. My string of hearts was over 3ft long & I finally took some cuttings for new plants. Now I'm going to tend to the pothos, which is a big bushy plant with lots of long pieces! Almost to the ground! I love days like this...so relaxing.
my string of hearts is just one vine thats about a foot long. I almost KILLED IT!!!!
So grateful for finding this video. I subscribed but then noticed the comments were years old. Anyway, l am going to do this propagation as l don't like the long empty parts where leaves die off.
Haha the time lapse is great 😂 oh wow that one long vine grew so long wow thanks for this!!!
this is the exact video i was looking for! was visiting some family friends and they had a huge pothos that i got a clipping from. such a cool way to share among friends. thank you for taking the time to show what each method turned out like months later, thats really helpful!
Glad I could help!
Great Vid. Keep up the Great work. At 64, (an amateur Gardner for over 40 years), you taught me quite a bit about the Pothos.
Thanks for watching! glad it helped!
Your older leaves on the marble queen died because they werrent getting enough light. You can tell because all the new leaves reverted to plain green.
Makes sense!
@@TechplantChannel You may know but if not - pothos will do alright in a dim area just so long as there is some light and the plant is well watered and fed. The green parts of the leaves are taking in energy and white parts are where the plant is kind of saying, "okay I have enough light, let's turn part of the energy off."
krankenheim13 cool
@@krankenheim13 my grandmothers pothos goes through seasonal phases in the summer it would produce more variegated leaves and in the winter when the sun didn't get into the windows as much it would just produce green ones my grandmother sent me some pothos cuttings in the mail to remind me of her because I won't get to see her for a while (I moved to Florida I used to live in Oklahoma)
All variegated plants do best in bright indirect light.
Thanks so much for breaking this down . I am not ready to give up growing plants. Pothos is a great plant. I've got this...with your help. Thanks again
Glad it was helpful! and good luck with your plants! never give up!
Thank you. Your persistence is appreciated and the step by step together with you over time feature is just we a beginner like me needs.
no problem, good luck on your propagation!
@@TechplantChannel I am about to start. We live in the UK. Our first time doing propagation. So excited.... I know , I need to get out more hahah.
This is the best video on pothos I've seen. Simply because you stuck at it so long to see how they looked well into their adult lives 😁😁
WHY THIS CHANNEL IS SO UNDERRATED?!?!
ive been asking myself this very question! Thanks for watching and supporting the channel!
I have been searching videos about pothos for months and this has been the best thus far! Thanks for the clear details!!
Glad it could help! thanks for watching
I grow most of my pothos in water permentaly, i love them in water, that way i can set my water grown plants in any container i want,, and i change my water once or twice a week at least, to provide oxygen, that is the key to a healthy plant
nice work!
The ONLY video that I understood out of a dozen! Thanks so much for being so clear! I have a “one vine” Pothos and could NOT find an answer as to why! Until this video! Thanks!
Glad the video could help!
i think the one with 4 vines probably sprouted sooner because les energy was being used for maintaining the current growth. great vid :)
good point!
This is the best instructional video I've seen on propagating Pothos.
Thank you!
Thank you so much for this super easy tutorial! I just did my 1st propagation of a pothos I have that was dying and I did the multiple clippings method! Wish me luck!
So cool that you showed them after many days of growth. Thanks for that
sweetheart! you answered all my questions about planting the cuttings from my philo! thank-you!!
Thanks for watching, glad It helped!
woah that was a thick vine at the end!!! thank you for this video! very helpful as always:)
Thank you for this video! I like the multi cut method, had never considered doing that. Just took some new pothos cuttings after watching this. 🙌🏼🌿
Yeah same here! once I learned about it I wanted to make the video to spread the knowledge. I always did the one big cutting method.
Thank you so much! I've been nervous about how to propogate my pothos plants but by the time your video had ended mine were already cut and placed in a glass container. Definitely gave me the confidence to give this a try!
Nice, hope its going well!
I watched this twice. So helpful! Thank you so much! Very well explained, clear, and well shot and edited :)
thanks for watching!
most helpful video on propagation pothos ever! thank you 😊
Glad it was helpful!
Thank you for showing the progression over time.. It really makes me appreciate this plant a lot more
My pleasure
thank you for the different stages! it helps alot
Happy to help!
The type of soil you use is very important . I repotted a marble queen in a water conserve type soil that caused root rot. I learned the hard way that this type of soil is not meant for pothos because it's not fast draining which causes the root to sit in water and rot, however it's perfect for my Fiddle Leaf plant.
nice! I usually try and use a chunky mix, but if i use regular water retaining soil i just water much much less
This might be the most helpful video I've seen on propogating a pothos plant. Thank you!
Super helpful, thanks very much! I was at my plant with some scissors and decided to check in with RUclips first. Glad I did!
Thanks for watching!
I have been growin pothos from the cuttings for while now and have been learning so much ! A leaf had actually broke off and it was so healthy and beautiful I mean for real this leaf had no long or stem anything it was just a little stem that leaf comes on 🍃and some reason I couldn't let it go lol so I stuck in small pot with soil and it grew 2 other leaves in few weeks and is now a full little plant with 6 leaves in 2 mths! These plants are amazing beautiful plants that you can grow so easily ! I can't believe it
Thanks this helped! Taking my pothos plant and trying to grow in my aquariums and this helped a lot as far as where to trim.
Glad it helped!
Thank you for explaining the difference in the two types of propagation. I usually do the first method, but don't get the bushy look I want.
I'm trying the multiple cuts this time around. Gotta love pothos.
Thank you so much for putting the crazy amount of time to make this video and show us the Pothos propagation. Truly appreciated it! Love and light your way 💕✨
Thanks for watching and taking the time to comment!
Thanks for the descriptions of ways to propagate pothos. I got a few cuttings of an overgrown pothos that had been in a very low light area, underwatered, and that had several very long vines. I placed two cuttings in jar of water by a window with strong sunlight and left it alone for two or three months. The root systems slowly filled the jar and the vines had those root nodes which I had assumed incorrectly were branches where more vines would develop. I potted the vine that had thrived in water only, leaving what looked like a new leaf sprouting from the stem poking up through the soil. I think my new plant must have been shocked from being transferred out of a water-only environment to soil. It would have been best had I known that more moist soil would have been the better way to pot it. Your approach to sharing results over time is helpful too.
Great technical video and really helpful. Brilliant filming and editing. easy on the eye too. I recently acquired x2 Pothos one regular green and a Marble Queen and so this video was particularly relevant. I'm no stranger to propagation methods but this video has taught me about the difference between producing single and multi vine. Great comments here too which offer some useful tips. Thanks Rachel and Gustavo - I'll give this a whirl
this is the best plant video i've ever watched!!
Thanks for this! I actually just stuck a cutting in a stem first in a water jar and now it’s dying 😐 I wish I had read up on the nodes first but I’m gonna try to save her!
I think just about everyone makes that mistake! when i first got into plants i killed a crap ton. well even now im killing plants.... gotta learn somehow!
My teacher gave me a pothos plant and said she would teach me how to propagate it tomorrow, but I was so curious and excited I started to do some research and this video really helped me understand!
sounds like a cool teacher, i wish mine taught me about this stuff! good luck!
@@TechplantChannel Thank you so much! Good luck with your plants!
I watched 4 videos before finally finding what I was looking for, which was water propagation to planting into soil, so thank you!!! 👍🏼😁 New sub here!
Thanks for watching and subbing!
Great video! Clear, concise, and very informative. Thank you😊👍🏼🌱
Excellent video~! My Mother plant is 30 years old, and I have created so many new plants from it. (like you do). I use both methods. However, lately, I have been using moist Sphagnum Moss, to propagate them. Have you tried that?
Dude!!! "Skuzzy"....I haven't heard that word for so long! I used to use that word all the time in the 80's and even into the early 90's! Love it😂
Just starting to do this with cutting from my mother in law. I want them to eventually sit on top of my 10 gallon aquarium on the hood with the roots into the tank. I think the roots would make the tank look really cool and not to mention it would help take out the nitrates in the water. Very cool plant. It would be cleaning my air and my tank water.
nice, ive rooted some directly in my fishtanks!
Thank you! I like putting the plant in a glass vase with water and hanging with a bohemian style rope. I love how long they are and I cut some and put them in new water. They did great but I have a ton more to do and want to make sure I do it right. This was incredibly helpful.
very cool way to grow them! thanks for watching
Your video is extremely helpful. THANK YOU
Propagation.... DO IT FOR THE VINE
Very helpful walk through the propagation methods!
thanks for watching
@@TechplantChannel thank you for the video!
When I propagate, I intentionally let the cut callous over before I put it into water to prevent rot, etc. and seem to have about the same growth rate. Also! when I go to pot cuttings that I've rooted in water, I like to sort of coat the wet roots in with dry dirt, it seems to make them a bit less fragile during the planting process.
Big brain
Can they stay in water and not need to be potted in soil?
Javier Ceron no if it stays in too long, the leaves start turning brown
Karmen Aldaz how long should you leave them in before putting up? I have a cutting that has roots but small piece of roots
@@franconavarro342 I know one gal says she waits until they are growing secondary roots.
Thanks for this. Someone was disrespectful while doing some outside work on my home and they tore apart my plants so this will hopefully rescue most the vines they broke off.
Good luck i hope they are doing well
Great to have the comparison. I’d use the one long vine as the next plant to propagate from 😁👍🏻
Thanks for watching!
Thanks for the video. Best one so far in my opinion. I immediately went to my garden, made some cuttings and now put them in a jar full of water.
Awesome! Make sure they get lots of light and dont get cold and they will root really fast
Thanks! Also thanks for being so thorough. Can't wait to try this once my pothos gets bigger! Your video editing is 👍🏻.
Thanks for the kind words! I hope you are successful in your propagation!
I love both! Thankyou for the great demonstration lovely young man, and hope more young people would learn from you and be inspired by you to love and care for the nature!
Roots grow easier if there are less leafs taking up nutrients, ur second method had indicidual leaves. Loveee ur videos, so informative!
interesting
Love doing multi cuttings.
Currently is my first time that I have also used a heat mat (because they were out from my spring garden starts) and my led lights. I’m also propagating a monstera cutting.
I am amazed at the speed at which they have both sprouted roots using the mat and lights. I’m sure a nice sunny window is perfectly effective, but the mat and lights have sped the process up significantly!
Also, if you buy Aqua Safe tap water treatment drops (think: for your goldfish’s aquarium), you can add a few drops to your water to de-chlorinate and minerals.
Happy propagating! 🌱
I’m going to walk into work tonight with some scissors and steal some of their pothos
lol be careful!
I did at my work too! hehe they grow so easily no one would notice. We all do it
It’s like $5 to buy one...
@@kristinkoehne3450 and it’s ✨free✨ to propagate one
@@365daysofveronica I’m going to be doing that but in a plant shop😂😳, wish me luck 🚔
Really got a lot out of this video! Super helpful that you described and clearly showed the steps simultaneously as opposed to other videos that mostly verbally describe with poorly coordinated video. I’m ready to propagate!
Glad it was helpful! also good luck! make sure it stays in a warmish area and gets some good light, as winter approaches the window sill can get chilly and inhibit growth! Good Luck and thanks for watching!
Thanks! We’re getting into house plants 🌱 and I was thinking about buying a cutting. I didn’t really know what that meant and now I do!
awesome! enjoy the hobby its ton of fun.
I watched 4 or 5 videos before I landed on yours. Thank you I subscribed👍🏽
Thanks for showing your mistake and teaching us to learn from it! Not many content creators seem to be able to admit when they’re wrong, so that was very refreshing to see, I subbed just for that. My mom propagated a baby off my spider plant and I came to visit after a few months and boiiii she abused the poor thing! 😭 His glass container was so small his roots had no room to grow, she had him in full sun and he was definitely ready to be potted but she liked the glass aesthetic. Today I saved him.
Nice work! Im propagating some spider plants too now!
Great advice and no annoying background music. I'm going to try propagating using the second method.
Good luck!
I used to only do the single vine propagation. Switched to single leaf/node and never looked back. Even worked on my M. deliciosa and adansonii
Yeah it just seems way more efficient! I like this method more now too! I gotta get me a monstera and get it propagating!
Thanks for watching and sharing your experience!
Thank you for showing the whole process and two ways to root them.
no problem thanks for watching!
"I don't know what to do with this" my friend! Take more clippings :D you can fill out the base so it looks fuller the way you find more appealing!
Thanks for the tips!
Best video on pothos propogation everrrrrrrr! Thank you so much
This was so incredibly helpful. I’ve been struggling with my propagation. Thank you!
Glad it was helpful!
great way you show this step by step way easier then some videos. Thanks
You're welcome!
Thank you for showing how the plant progressed.
no problem! I hate the videos that just tell you to do something but never show even a few days after the fact! anyways, thanks for watching!
Great job, even my husband understood!! I'll both methods. Have an old pothos that cinonv every where. Time for a trim, rooting and planting . Then all the relatives will have some starts of Granma vine.
Very well-explained. That one long vine of the Marble Queen can be cut again and again; cuttings will root nicely in damp potting soil. I do this constantly in the summer with my large hanging baskets (I have a bunch of kinds of pothos, philodendrons, and syngoniums). I keep my baskets full and bushy with these cuttings, and I also end up with new plants.
It saves the hanging baskets from dragging on the ground and attacking random passers-by.
Oh, and I meant to tell you, the small green one is called heartleaf pothos.
awesome! Thanks for the identification as well!
