I love this guy and his dry humor. Thanks for sharing your planting experience!
Watching you trim your rubber tree brought back memories of my Grandmother. She would put Band-Aids on her rubber tree to stop the sap from dripping everywhere.
i'm a new plant parent who is terrified that one wrong move could make everything go horribly wrong - but nothing makes more more confident i can do something than hearing you calmly say it is "dead easy" 😊
From my expirience, something that helps with the water-propagation is letting the part where you cut it dry for like a day, wich will prevent it from rotting. Very informative video tho
I love, absolutely love how you include details in all you do.
I have just learnt how to wean plants off water and let them adapt to their new soil filled home.
Thank YOU kindly beautiful soul ❤
You bet!
Loved your picture -“Stick to the plan” !
I have a plant. It too was looking crispy once. When you described your plant as crispy, my eyes shot over to see it…I just KNEW this had to be the same plant as mine; crispy is a perfect description of those dry leaves.
I was tidying up the dry leaves…when I broke some stems. I cut them off with scissors, popped them into a vase… and LEFT them there; hoping they would survive… somehow.
I now know what it’s called, I googled it, and have subsequently bonded with ‘the stems.’ It’s called tradescantia; such a pretty name; be it a mouthful.
This has all been possible because of YOU. I now know what tradescantia needs; to go into a pot of soil, leave the vase where it formed roots, and possibly hang somewhere; ❤ so it can shine and be the star that it always was; just like the parent plant.
I needed to hear these stories today thank YOU
😘💕💕💕
Love the new house with all the natural light! (Jealous) To bad you couldn't invite us all over! LOL not sure the Wife would like that at all! 😂
I have repotted so many plants the last two months. I have to repot my syngonium milk confetti. It has grown so many roots. It is in a clear pot and solid.
can't believe spring is already on the way. im so excited for the semi-hydro sansevieria & monstera update & to see your pothos all over your living room wall like before. 🌿💚
I don't know where you live, but we are only in the 2nd month of Winter here.
Whoa!! Just saw your new video 🎉 So a cuppa & timtam & enjoy 😊
Your videos are such a perfect way to start the day. I really appreciate seeing you recover from mistakes - knowing that I’m not the only one helps me not feel so bad! I’m also glad that you like seeing our suggestions, so… I’ll say that I have tried numerous remedies for fungus gnats and the sure fire one I’ve reliably used is hydrogen peroxide (1:2 hydrogen peroxide:water). Douse the soil and as soon as the hydrogen peroxide hits the soil, it breaks down into water, so is completely harmless to the plant, but instantly kills all eggs and insects in the soil. I’ll re-treat once the soil dries because you won’t get all the adults in the first go. I’ll finish off with a dusting of cinnamon across the top of the soil because that deters the adults from laying more eggs.
That works for me as well, but others have commented that hydrogen peroxide didn't work. I can't quite figure out why that should be...I had a horrific infestation (never buy potting soil at the dollar store!) and three treatments with peroxide and water did the trick. Safety note: hydrogen peroxide is extremely toxic to ALL life, so it needs to stored carefully and never used on animals...well, that is, unless you want to kill the animal, so there's that.
I've been binge watching your videos since I became a subscriber. I was so excited to see this one. In the next couple of days, I'm going to prune my burgundy rubber tree. He had two leaves when I got him heats ago. I actually did a notch about a year and a half ago. I gave up on a new growth, then I went to look at where I'm going to cut his trunk and saw some new leaves. I was so excited! He is way too top heavy. He has two big stems from the base, all on his own, with a third one otw. I may cut it right about the notched growth. He's about 4' tall. Very beautiful.
I am so glad to hear that you will be growing your devils ivy up around your room! I thought it looked beautiful in your old house! Much to my surprise and delight mine has attached itself to the window trim and is on its way 😂. What I am concerned with is how I’m going to repot the plant without removing the attached stems!
Please unattach the aerial roots from your wall/ window frame, etc. The damage will be difficult to repair.
Yay. New video. I’m so happy.
I going to reorganize my garden shed as I've got quite a mess & no room to work. I have mostly succulents so not time to out them back outside yet. Sadly, I can't have plants inside the house as my cats will eat them 😐🙄
Thanks for info! I was hesitant about pruning & reoptting in the cooler months but you've helped me get over that!
Love your channel, avid follower and 1st time responding.
I started collecting over a year ago, and I'm close to 200 plants along with a couple dozen propogations.
This is the first time I've heard you mention pon or Leca?
To date, along with all the usual ups and downs, 'NATS' by far has been my biggest problem.
I've tried most of the nat remedies with only a frustrating 60% - 80% success rate.
About 3 months ago, I decided to go as much all pon as possible.
Today, about 98% of my plants are in pon, and my nat problem is 'almost' gone to rare that I see any at all.
Pon is expensive, I mix my own and it's still expensive! The majority of my plants LOVE it, and my watering is reduced to watering most plants once a week, and some to 10 days and more.
I've tried Leca but didn't have any good luck with it. I have a batch of pon mixed with Leca as a filler for larger pots and plants with heavier roots.
Your channel has been a great and valuable help. Thanks, keep up the good work.
PS. I have fascinating results using Fluval Stratum for propagation!
Nice job on the pepperomia splint dr Sheffield!
Always learnings and enjoys !
Ohh, so excited to see your semi-hydro adventures 👏. I switched to Pon early 2024. No looking back. I love it! And so do my plants. When I get a new plant, it goes into water for a week or so then into Pon.
Love these monthly videos👌🏻 Would love some vlog style videos aswell where you’re just pottering around and showing growth and progress of your plants
First off, your new home is beautiful. More spacious for your plants. Also, it's good to see you back on. This video was very informative. I can't wait to see how you zz plant does because I have one that too was over watered and left me with one stem that had been barely holding on for a few years now and hasn't grown anymore.
I am so happy for you and your family on the new home with all of those beautiful windows 🪟 ❤
Thank you 😊
Hey there
My ZZ Top 😉 is my favorite plant. Very proud of it. I’ve been blessed with this ‘sharped dressed man’ 😂
He is HUGE and has never had brown tips or leaves turn yellow on me.He’s 5 years old and has flowered at least 4 times. He almost faces south. And even tho I treat it like a succulent he has grown shrooms at least 3 times on me, brat !! I never mist my plants, maybe my new Chinese Evergreens once in a while. But the shrooms floored me.
Have a good one and keep up the good work Rich. ✌🏽🪴🇨🇦
I grow my Snake plant pups in LECA also 😊 including my Ficus Ruby and Fiddle Leaf figs
Thank you for another super and informative video! I love seeing how pretty and planty your new home is, so cheerful and inviting with all your green friends. Your channel has given me the courage to use my pruners and switch to bottom watering, too, and I have a very happy bunch of green friends of my own. Good luck with Mr Tineke and Mr ZZ plant. Coffee and Sheffield Made Plants, the very best start to the weekend.
Your plants look so beautiful again. I even got to know new plants..I'm not that familiar with carnivorous plants😺👌
I’m doing some trimming, propping and repotting 😀🇨🇦
Thank you Sir. I admire the great amount of light coming into your house for these plants.
I have been loosening the soil, and I Pruned my Snakeplant and might prune my Prayer plant,
Leaving the cuttings to callas
Great video Ritch, how are you and the family settling into the new house? Wishing you all the best in your lovely house.☺️
Very well thanks!
Good morning, Mr Sheffield!
hey sir please do tell about pruning of croton in start of spring season
I'd like to try the Pitcher Plant. :-) I'm in US so some of the items you use I can't get. I try to find something close. I wound up overwatering a Swedish Ivy (not a "real" ivy) the green one. But, I have about 20 starts - so will wash the old hanging pot - put fresh soil in it - and plant the cuttings. There are 2 stems still growing - the rest were done - I made cuttings out of most of them. I bought two variegated Swedish Ivy - and they came nearly dead - I have been trying to 'save" them - but not sure they will make it! :-( I really wanted a variegated but not so sure I feel good about ordering more. I love your videos - you are so calm and so easy to understand! Thank you so much.
I do love the Amaryllis plants, I've grown them from seed they are still a bit young to flower, I also have the Belladonna Lily in white and pink. Those are my favourite
I love your channel. I did a transfer of all my plants into Leca 4 yrs ago. Best decision ever. Took me a year to get them all transplanted. Don’t forget to give them nutrients as you may or may not know Leca has no nutrients. You can still use whatever fertilizer you’ve been using. Good luck and keep us posted 💚🪴🍀
Your poor zz! Hope she recovers.
I have some pups on my bunny ear cacti (I have 2) but haven't been brave enough to plant the babies.
I adore your new abode, very happy for you, the Mrs., & the plants!🪴 🪻🌱
The information and demonstrations you share are invaluable.
Thanks from the
Sunshine State of Florida, USA
✌️😎
Did you toss the rather large rhizome from your ZZ plant that you planted the 1 long stem from?
I have 2 ZZs that I cut back b/c of yellow/dead leaves, but the roots and the rhizomes were in tact, so I planted them. Watching them to see if I get new baby shoots. Hope yours grows as well!!😊❤
I tossed it. It wasn’t doing great
Ok. Thank you.😊
I love your new home. Your plants enhances the beautiful style of your home. I look forward to your videos each month.
Love your plants and have invested in some for my home. Thanks for sharing your experience!
Thank you for your knowledge! Another great video!
Happy planting!
I have bought soil at your recommendation. Will see if my plants will love it 🤫
Thank you 😊
I also have a ficus elastica tineky clipping from a friend. He's one huge leaf. He seems to be doing OK so far. I've had him in the soil for a couple of weeks or so. He still looks the same, healthy and beautiful. Some people thought it was a plastic leaf. (I don't own any plastic plants) So, hopefully, he'll be growing some roots. I'm going to wait a while before checking. I'm too scared to check. He's too gorgeous.
I think the rhizome on the ZZ might have sprouted (if it wasn't soft), mine did. Love your videos.
I was thinking the same thing; might have made for a good experiment. Maybe remove the rotted part, sprinkle it with cinnamon and let it callus over, then pot it up.
Im also enjoying propagation with you 😊❤
Thank you soooooo much 👏🏾 for this video. I also had a gnat problem and I’ll try lecca as well. Also, now I know how to take care of my brand new rooted monsterra❣️❣️ ❤ from Canada 🇨🇦
A great variant video! Love it 😊 Lots of love ❤️ Ginger
I needed this
I noticed you're still battling fungus gnats.Even on your Albo.
Get a fan going 24/7 I have a ceiling fan
I haven't noticed even one gnat since I got it
One thing about the ZZ plant, I found that you have to be very careful with the moisture meter. If you just poke it into the pot, you can nick the rhizome, after which the plant is pretty much doomed in my experience. I killed 2 plants that way before I realised what was happening.
Some really good tips today
I grow mine in leca. Doing well. I grow everything in leca
Your plants are gorgeous. The pots are beautiful also.
25:20 I have loads of zeezee propagations from my mother plant going on at the moment (last time I counted 75 leaves and 10 petioles). As soon as I see bit too many leaves getting yellow on one petiole, I will get rid of yellow ones, I will cut off (more likely snap off) all green leaves except maybe 3-4 at the top and I will propagate everything - all green leaves as well as the four-ish-leaved-petiole. They all are rooting with no issues for me. There is a casualty here and there but that is expected, not everything survives everything. I have them all in leca. Once they grown their own "potatoes" and start pushing out their first petioles, I will move them (maybe in batches of 10) into bigger pots. My mother plant is living in leca (20cm pot) with tiny reservoir (max 200ml of NutriSol which usually lasts for couple months) and she seems to be loving her life. She is currently working on two new petioles. I live in UK too, just bit more south from you, so still winter time weather here too but she does not seem to mind at all. She is looking out of the north facing window but gets grow light "sun" for 12 hours a day. So far, I was unable to throw away any healthy part of my zeezee but soon I will have to learn to do that else, I will be surrounded by a zeezee army 🤭
I´m surpised the zz died, even watering it 10 times in one day should not cause this. Overwatering is about the frequency not the amount. So really interesting. Maybe next time you do that take the plastic pot out of the outer pot for a week or even take the whole soil out of the pot, if the plant is rooted enough it will stay together (I did that with a aloe once, had it just sitting on a plate for a week), just to help it dry faster.
also I think some of the other stems could have been propagated as well. And for cacti or succulents I don´t water cuttings for at least a week usually 2-3 weeks, there are no roots so they really don´t need it.
I propagated a zz plant in water before, but would do it in soil like you did next time.
I'm gonna try leca with my snake plant pups
I got my Monstera Albo for free as well :) It has 5 leaves right now. Going to put it on a moss pole soon to get it to grow as well as possible
Fungus gnats: hate them! If you have a lot of plants, like you do, it’s more or less impossible to get rid of them!
But I still try. Been keeping a lot of plants in water (with fertiliser). Have had some plants in a glass container with plastic or glass cover - to isolate them (I typically do that with new plants as a quarantine measure).
Been keeping some plants on the dry side, which has killed some of the plants 🙄
But as long as there are pots with open soil, they will find a place to lay their eggs, so I haven’t managed to kill all of them.
(All the soil I use has been frozen thoroughly, btw)
Next up for me: to use much, much more pumice in the soil. And sometimes give a wash with hydrogen peroxide - although sterilising the soil may give mould problems.
If you are able to water from the bottom that might do the trick. It worked for me. Once in a while I water from the top to give it a thorough drink, but then I let it dry out again and just water from the bottom. My plants got healthier, too!
@@dellacalfee Hi. In my experience this works fine if you can control the surface soil of ALL of your plants at ANY moment in time. But I have a lot of plants and some of my pots are so big that bottom watering is not really feasible. I have tried putting long tubes into the soil (from the top) and watered through them - so as to avoid the top soil to becoming moist. This has worked fine with some of my medium large pots. But I killed an elephant’s foot (which should be close to impossible) this way (thought it was getting enough water, but I didn’t reach the roots) 😢 It’s a constant struggle 🤨 And the worst part: I can’t really go shopping for new plants anymore, because all of them seem to have fungus gnats or something even worse (I sometimes do anyway)…
@10:28 doggo sighting!!
Good eye!
Springer Spaniel? Quick sighting; great catch!
Q regarding rubber plants: I wanna cut + replant a large branch about .5 meter long - would you recommend air layering or could I water propagate to get it to root? Thanks for this video btw! I was JUST thinking about what I could do in preparation for spring.
I find that big tweezers work better with cacti. They can't stab the tweezers. I have a cactus that I already took loads of pups off of and it is loaded again. I will have to remove them soon or they can cause the mother plant to die. I already lost one like that. I actually propagated some zz plants in moss. Two of them are in soil now. The Raven doesn't seem as easy to root
My varigated Tineke is punishing me too with brown spots on it's leaves. But not for over- but rather underwatering. I reduced the weekly showers (which it obviously enjoyed) so it wouldn't rot over Winter. I should like to remove the ugly leaves but I believe if I do, it will not regrow new leaves where the old ones have been removed. I would like to try your technique to encourage branching but the stem is still green! I guess I will just have to live with an ugly tree!
Love this video and we got to see your black and white doggo in the yard 😊🇺🇸🇺🇸🇬🇧🇬🇧
Today it’s watering and when I get my tree fern fiber to mix in my soiless mix. By itself it’s too dry and airy. So I’m hoping the tree fern fiber will help. Then I’ve got about 6 plants that need repotting and I e got 8 plants I’m throwing out. Trying to find 10 to clear out. I’m focusing on Hoyas and ficus. But some that are too huge, ( good by calatheas).
I’ve got the Amarilles bulbs at the bottom of tall pots, so no staking needed. They multiply like mad.
Id love to see you discuss the cost of plant care. Specifically electricity to all thos grow lights.
I have learnt so much from your videos, and have now got a moisture meter and anti stress liquid for when my rainwater is no longer available.
Thank you. Is this your full time job? How long does it take to check/water so many plants?
I cannot get the hang of how much to water my indoor Fatsia Japonica. It is in indirect light, no draughts around it. The leaves have gone blotchy with dull brownish areas, which I think is a watering problem. Any suggestions? This is what prompted me to buy the water meter. The stems are still firm and upright, but the leaves look sad and discoloured. Can it be saved? Any suggestions welcomed. Thank you again.
Sounds like Fungus Alternaria alternata. Remove and destroy all infected leaves, buy a fungicide containing azoxystrobin or difenoconazole which is commonly used for this condition. Other effective options include fungicides with active ingredients like chlorothalonil or pyraclostrobin. Ensure the humidity around the plant is not too high and ensure the plant has adequate airflow. Personally, I would remove the first inch of soil and replace it too. The plant is salvagable.
@@SpaceCadet4Jesus Thank you.
I went the other way and let my zz raven go too long without water. It was dusty when I checked it. A new petiole is coming in but it feels mushy so I suspect it’s gone bad. And another symptom broke off. It feels limp too. So now I’m paying a little bitter closer eye on it.
I have the hardest time with pepperoni a plant. How often do you water it?❤
That sounds like a neat plan to get the plants to grow over the door way.
Oh boy. Was the ZZ rhizome completely not salvageable? It didn’t look bad from the camera’s perspective, but that doesn’t mean there was nothing wrong with it, obviously. It takes a ZZ stem ages to become a plant again. It has to grow back the rhizome, then roots, and then very last, put out a new shoot. But, hey, it will probably get there, in some months, if it has decent light. I hope it does come back for you.
For anyone who might not know, it’s faster and more likely to succeed if you plant a stemless rhizome as this is the way the plant grows normally. Sometimes it can’t be helped though. A rotten rhizome is just never going to come back. 😢
I enjoy your videos Richard. You’re such a funny dude but you also make very informative, realistic videos showing the good and the bad. I always appreciate that in the plant-tube sphere. 💚
I hope the zz plant recovers. The name you gave it in the previous video is the same as my spouse, so we had fun with your dialogue .
16:01 I think this is a mistake I have learnt the hard way.
In another RUclips video, @chompers11 replied to a comment of mine:
the roots which come from stem cuttings in water - are different to roots that grow in soil.
Though i haven't read anything authoritative on the topic, I believe it to be true.
Conclusion:
Once you see roots from stem cuttings and decide to pot them - for the first 1-3 weeks, treat the plant to extra water - until the *water roots* have time to adjust, and the roots _turn into_ *soil roots.*
I have a blue moonstone succulent I got a while ago. I have wanted one for ages and a couple weeks ago I saw one in my local garden shop. It looked very healthy but Unfortunately it had I think had some of its lower leafs prop lifted. I have it under grow lights and its looking very happy, even flowering right now. But im wondering if I can cut it off at the stem and plant the top of the plant to get it looking full with no missing leafs and leave the stump to grow into another plant like an ecovaria as you did in a previous vid. But I also don’t want to risk killing my beloved plant. Would love to see a video on one from you. They are like fat blue jade plants and look almost good enough to eat 😉.
You can put the zz plant cutting in water to get it to root.
It would really help if you would highlight your points in the transcript providing an easy reference for your listeners to review your suggestions.
Very nice video thanks
Most of my plants are living in leca... zeezees, spider plant, snake plant, alocasias, calathea, dracaena, ficus, succulents, philodendrons, african violets, hoyas... Very few are in fluval stratum, pon or perlite - mostly just cuttings and alocasias corms. None of my plants are living in soil. Soil is forbidden in my home. It is allowed in my garden though 😁
Quick tip on gloves, if you're sensitive to latex then nitrile gloves are probably a better choice.
Not sponsored of course 😅
I want to tell you that a "snake plant" is a succulent and may not thrive in lecca and water. Just saying. I'll try to watch your progress with that plant.
Love your videos! Love your plants. Love you from freezing Michigan, USA.
Me gustan sus videos.....me pregunto por que no tiene una Ficus Lyrata....saludos desde Panamá
Semi Hydro is great for succulents as well (with and without a reservoir)! I got a ZZ Raven, Burro's Tail and a string of peas in a really chunky semi Hydro mix (like 5 - 20mm stones). It's the only way I've successfully propagated succulents, because I just stick them in the nooks and crannies of the rocks and forget about them for weeks xD
My houseplant chores are a little embarrassing. I got pretty sick and was more or less out of commission for a while. My husband took care of almost everything around the house but we both kinda forgot the plants. I have to go through and figure out what can be saved and what can't. My favorite pilea is a lost cause. 😢
Try taking cuttings to root. Try extra nursing for the main plant & maybe it will come back.🙏
If the Monstera already had water roots and you're moving to Leca, why go back to soil before switching over to semi-hydro? Does it help the plant in some way?
You wouldn’t unless you changed your mind
Bit to cold in my flat for messing with plants yet always cloudy
take me a cutting aswel please💯
Do you add API stress coat to the water for the cuttings?
No just when they’re plants
Hi!! I love your channel ❤️
Question, can I put privacy window film on my East facing patio door and still have plenty of sun on my plants?
How do you remember all the names? I am glad I saw that others struggle to keep some plants alive.
Lots of practice
Hello Mr. Sheffield I got rid of my fungus flies by first put a spray of soap and neem oil in the soil and after place a good amount of mosquito bits pellets, that I get it either at Home Depot here in USA or Amazon, and no more flies. I have around 60 plants inside the house. Hope this help you. Let me know if you try it.
Have you tried microbe- lift bmc? It’s a liquid version of the bits. I put a drop or 2 in my watering can and water my plants. Works awesome. No bits to soak and a bottle lasts forever. I get mine on Amazon. Happy planting ❤
To prevent your Ficus looking too leggy you could prune the both the trunks above the lowest 2/3 leaf nodes to get more ramification lower down, that way it’ll look more like a real tree
Yep
If you're allergic to latex, you should use latex-free gloves while pruning ficus elasticas. the white sap coming out of the plant is latex, that is why the common name is rubber tree.
lindas plantas
Propagated around 15 dumb canes out of a 7ft stem. I think most have started to sprout
The ficus definitely effected my skin.
I tried everything to get rid of fungus gnats - bottom watering, nematodes, insecticides, potassium soap, diswasher soap, neem oil, isolating the infested plants from new ones, you name it . The only thing that worked for me is to switch all my plants (important to do so at the same time) to pon. What currently sits happily in pon in self-watering pots - various alocasia, few anthuriums, a golden pothos, philodendron white princess, strelizia, and ZZ raven (important to keep the ZZ most of the time somewhat dry, and water it very sparcely). Only a begonia didn't enjoy this transition.
What is pon ? I'm sure you're abbreviating something, but what ? I have absolutely no idea what * pon * is supposed to mean.... It sounds like a nickname you gave to something that nobody else probably knows what you're talking about
Is the pon you're talking about Lechuza-pon?
Pon is just little teeny tiny stones, like pumice and lava rock. It’s a substrate alternative to soil. I’ve never used it, but I know it’s supposed to help aerate the roots, and hold onto water (you can add to soil too) and also make the plant less susceptible to diseases and of course if used alone, fungus gnats!
For my fungus gnats last winter, I used Bonide Systemic Houseplant Insect Control, suggested by one of the people at the nursery where we buy house plants and outdoor plants. It works against aphid, scale, white flies and other insects, including fungus gnats. Followed directions one time and they were gone! We are well through this winter and no problems. But I learned a huge lesson about over watering my plants.
I add a few drops of peppermint oil to my water. No gnats!🎉
Followed the link to sybotanica - says they don't deliver in uk. I wonder what's a good compost alternative I can buy or order in Manchester uk?
UK houseplants 😀
@@woodmouse-71 I buy my compost from UK Houseplants, the man is called Joe, I highly recommend him 😀
