Hello Matt , I must say that for being an amature carpenter you did an amazing job and described your work like a master carpenter. You made some very good points on certain techniques that you used and I learned some new tricks that will be very helpful if I build a cabin. Overall I'll give this video and your skills an A+. Looking forward to the next one keep up the great work.

This is the best cabin build breakdown on RUclips! I'm currently using a bunch of knowledge gained from your channel to build my first cabin! THANKS for all the help MATT!
He's brilliant. You pick up lots of important tips & tricks. He also shows you his mistakes so you don't make the same ones. Also, another great channel for this is Dave Whipple at Bush Radical. I've learned lots from his projects too.
Matt love this full script on the build. Solid advise. Love all your content and music keep it coming and that dog is as close to human as you can get!! 🐕 🛷
For an armature, you've got some great knowledge..... 20min in and there is a Ton of info for my 1st cabin build. Kudos to all of these great crumbs of info. End of thought 🤔
Just moved back to Southeast Alaska, and hope to start a cabin like yours in the spring. This video is so helpful,as It will be my first build. Thank you!
New subscriber - love this channel! Very different beautiful part of the world from Australia where I live). I love all the ins and outs of how things get made or done. (I've never even seen snow ahhh so it'll be extra nice to watch on hot days here) ☺️
This is awesome. I want to build one of these Texas. If you want to setup some radio comms in your off-grid cabin, hit me up. It'd be a fun collaboration
Hey Man, Timmy from Truck House Life just turned me onto your blog. I like it so of course I subscribed. Unfortunately I'm now an EX- Sourdough from Anchorage and Sitka. Moved up there during the building of the pipeline in "74". Your cabin is about identical x 2. It was the up by Big Lake for hanging out when I'd flat track snow machines I did a 12-12 roof and over built the rafters for using the area for a sleeping loft. For roofing I used a product called Rapid Roof that was like a super thick plastic paint over their base cloth sealed to the osb. 300% elasticity and cures quickly. Using a man lift and a 2ft wide paint roller i put on 6 top-coats, left it white and painted the exterior walls white also. Plus I put on white window shutters. In the winter from my front property line and looking through about 40ft of trees it blended in. I admit that I got a lot of comments both good and bad. For heat, there was of course a wood stove, a 18" x 24" propane catalytic heater and a army surplus diesel heater. No electricity until the 4th year other than a diesel gen set that was army surplus also Keep up working on your dreams buddy and enjoy life. And never leave living in Alaska because you'll never, not miss it !!!
About the windows, I agree that some windows should be openable, but they don’t necessarily have to be sliding. The very best windows are the european style Tilt-and-Turn windows. There are also low cost options for windows that swing outward rather than slide.
I didn't know you could put plastic on the inside like that I thought it would create mold but I am glad to know that I can on my next project hopefully soon or hopefully at all thank you and I love this video and the cabin
I love the live edge spruce like you do!! Does using green spruce create twisting issues later? Or is the spruce dried in situ before you cut it? Using green wood is a big deal down south... Wondering about this in Alaska.
Love your videos brother came across your channel not too long ago n been watching pretty frequently ever since thanks for sharing all your awesome outdoor adventures, ways of living, and all the cool content you share keep em commin man N stay safe out there God bless 🙏🏻💪🏻
We had a clue what we were doing when we built our studio, but not much more than that. We started following builder channels to see if they had tips on things we were fuzzy on. We had a couple of big ticket items given to us, somethings out of our scrap pile, and we hit up habitat for humanity. We got gutters and windows from them, 200 bux for about 8 windows, what a deal! We bought the windows first before framing, because we were going to go with whatever they had, our only stipulation was the front 2 should match. Id attatch a pic of the finished project if I could figure how.
Looks good, your ridge beam is overkill and collar ties and hurricane straps on your eves are recommended. It is a small recreation cabin so R13 in 2x4 works. 2x6 would be better for full time. You need to get solar set up instead of using gas to call it off grid and I run my entire cabin full time off a 1.4Kw solar and 800Ah of batteries. Stay safe out there!
FANTASTIC video. Best and clearest narration for a cabin build I have yet seen. Would you mind sharing the brand you went with on your 10,000 BTU propane wall heater?
I love it! It's amazing! You have wonderful friends and oh, your family! I love the music so much! I watched your Christmas several times because it is so beautiful! ♥ So happy that you have a beautiful baby girl! 🧸 Beautiful family!!!!! ♥
Been wanting a Cabin for EVER...or what they're called here in Australia...a SHACK...BUT I just couldn't enjoy it all year round...basically ONLY in WINTER as any other time it would be just TO STINKING HOT Without full Air Conditioning...wich defeats the whole purpose
What a nice video ! Thanks a lot for all the work ! i've learned a lot of tips in that one :) I got a woodhouse and i just build my garage on my own (btw, for the osb on the wall i left 4mm between all panel to let them space to expand during raining season). It's my dream to get a cabin like this one day, unfortunately in France, we're not allowed to get those kind of construction even if it's our land, you need so much permission (or live hide ahah) ! But maybe one day i'll get it (first the wood land but it's really expensive here (sologne - france)). I'm really envious watching you building your stuff in that wonderful land ! Hope i'll get in alaska one day on holiday ! Whatever, really great job and thanks for all explanation (i just don't got the measurement because it's in inch lol) !
I was under the impression that Bubble Wrap goes under the floor joists, leave enough of a crawl space , to get under and install it. It keeps heat in, every type of Bugs out ..
You learned a lot. Good on the vapor barriers. I've built all my life. It sure has changed a lot, for the better. Much more ability to maintain heating cooling efficiency. You are right to save money and time a lot of figuring sizes comes into play. I hate seeing scrap wood. It's money going up in smoke. I hope to spebd a couple nights in the cabin. With the new knees tjis year it will be next year before I can maje it most likely . All good Stay in tune and keep picking . Help Timmy every chance you get. It's the hillbilly way. Haha
Fantastic breakdown. I suspect you don't have any building codes or permits to deal with up there as well? Do you expect your property tax to go up due to any reassessment for this new structure?
Pier blocks are for the southern US only. Foundations should go to 42" for the northern US. It varies a lot for Canada and Alaska 10' for Anchorage for cast in place concrete piers.
WAY Less to Build By Almost Half or More in some cases, than to Buy one prebuilt at one of those Side of the road Shed Sellers you see, that are Constantly getting Repo'ed.. I built a 10 x 10 Shed for Under $1,000. Took My Time doing so... A Prebuilt, Delivered and Set up the same size would have cost over $3,000 at the time I built mine and now can see them for $5,000 oh.. "Free Delivery within 50 miles..".. I Plan on building a 16 x 28 Shed/House. It will Cost Under $5,000 to Build the Enclosed Frame.. A Prebuilt 16 x 28 Enclosed Frame, Can't do Anything to it Until Paid Off, Will Cost Close to $20,000 and by the time you Pay it Off, Almost $30,000... I SAVE Between $15,000 and $25,000... and Put That Money into Finishing it off and even Furniture and Extra's... Maybe even a 2nd Story???
Yes, when working with lumber, especially green wood, you have to remember it's not perfect. A real carpenter, which isn't me, told me a good carpenter knows how to hide his mistakes, lol.
Disagree on the per blocks. Your cabin is a light structure so it may be fine, but with a days' worth of work you could have had a foundation that lasted 100 years.
