    This video is a review of the Hobie Evolve electric motor kit by Torqeedo. I have been using this on my Hobie Outback kayak for the last few weeks. During that time, I have used it in both the mirage drive well and on the twist and stow rudder. In this video, I will show you how to set up and operate the motor, demonstrate both mounting locations, go over the pros and cons to each location, and explain why I chose the Hobie Evolve over the other motor options on the market such as the Torqeedo 403, Water snake, and Bixpy Jet motor.

    Great info. Thanks for filming it. I've been trying to scheme up a cheaper way to rig my 2005 Hobie Tandem and my 2008 Outback with the lesser expensive options. The Water snake is too inexpensive for me and likely has a top speed of about 3 mph. I don't trust it to be reliable for that price. Larger motors need bigger transom mounts, bigger batteries. You addressed that with your talk about how you didn't like the transom mount on your last motor. You helped me decide not to start rigging up some crazy, homemade side mount that would likely be riddled with unplanned issues. Perhaps the $2200 cost of the Evolve is worth it. It's a total package. Turnkey.The battery is there and it's light and it floats. The motor fits the Hobie brand in both the well and/or the rudder... For my tandem, I'm usually alone in it, so I have the front well just sitting there doing nothing. I could mount the Evolve in the front well, and keep the mirage drive active in the pilot's well. Thanks for helping me get my head on straight. Sometimes you need to just spend the doe. You get what you pay for.

    • @KayakCatfish
      @KayakCatfish  5 лет назад +1

      Thanks James! Glad you found it helpful. The cost was a big deterrent for me initially but I have been using it for 10 months now and I absolutely love it. I did have one issue where it gave me an e45 code and wouldn’t run. Torqeedo replaced the motor within a few days though. All in all I am very happy with it.

    I like the idea of a trolling motor for drifting, but my concern about getting one is that I'm just adding to the list of more stuff for a fish to get my line hung up on. I seem to find enough snags as it is.

    Great video. Concise and to the point. Question: I have both the 2018 OB and an SS127 Bonafide, the former for saltwater, latter for freshwater bass, crappie, small lake and reservoir fishing - leaning toward Bixpy due to price, remote over throttle box both would probably be stern mounted. Use for maneuvering, holding, position, possible trolling. Maybe at lowest speed would be jog remote between lowest speed to off depending on wind current - what is your opinion regarding the fit and functionality over Torqeedo?

    • @KayakCatfish

      Thanks! I don’t really know much about the performance or quality of Bixpy motors. Once I realized I wouldn’t be able to troll at the lower speeds that I typically use, I immediately moved on as that was a deal breaker for me. I hope you enjoy whichever motor you end up going with though.

      I’m not sure they are making them anymore. You might want to reach out to Hobie or Torqeedo directly.

    what do you think of the old town auto 136 and the drive system,or would you still use the Hobie Torqeedo.

    • @KayakCatfish
      @KayakCatfish  4 года назад

      The Torqeedo has a faster top speed but the Old Town with i-Pilot is much quieter and has all those gps functions that make fishing a lot easier.

    So I’m a Kayak lover. Don’t hate me, but at the point you are putting motors on a Kayak, shouldn’t you consider a John Boat? It’s probably lighter than a Kayak. At this point, it’s likely cheaper. It has more space. It’s more stable...

    • @KayakCatfish
      @KayakCatfish  4 года назад

      Don’t confuse cost of purchase with cost of ownership. Yes a Jon boat is cheaper up front but you are going to have to put fuel in the gas motor to power it. As much as I fish, that would cost me several hundred dollars per year just in gas.You will also need a truck or suv to tow it and launch it at some of the places I fish at. With a kayak, I can tow it with a small car which gets me 32mpg while hauling the kayak and never costs me a dime in gas or oil. Plus it is just a hell of a lot more fun catching fish in a kayak than a Jon boat.

    When you put a motor on your kayak... you're required to Register the kayak in Tennessee as ya do for a boat...
    Right?

      Travis Horton I could be wrong... but I Think you have to in Tennessee... i asked him, cause i think he is too!
      I'm curious to know now! Lol
      In my opinion... a battery powered motor shouldnt require it... but ya know how fish n game can be!
      Anything to get more money from ya!

    • @KayakCatfish
      @KayakCatfish  6 лет назад +3

      It varies per state but here in Tennessee, you are required to register it like a boat and pay the $13 per year for tags.

  • @offgridwhitetails8768

    Ok. So rumor has it that it only gets 30 minutes max at full throttle on a full charge. Is this accurate?

    • @KayakCatfish
      @KayakCatfish  5 лет назад +1

      Yes, if you run it wide open the battery will run out in 30-45 minutes. The key is to run it slightly under full throttle. Instead of going 5mph, I cut it back to 4.5 to 4.7mph. This increases the run time significantly.

      I love it when it works. The quality leaves a lot to be desired though. I have had two motor pylons tear up and a battery that wouldn’t charge. Customer service has been great each time and they have replaced the damaged items with brand new parts but it is still frustrating to spend that much and have so many things go wrong in less than 2 years.

    • @KayakCatfish

      I have had the same issues. In the two years that I have owned it, I have had two motor pylons replaced under warranty and a battery that wouldn’t charge. Customer service was excellent each time but it is still very frustrating to have that many issues with a motor at that price range. I love it when it works but I have hated myself for buying it every time it has left me stranded.

      The motor pylon has been replaced twice and the battery had an issue where it wouldn’t charge. Customer service was excellent each time and all items were replaced under warranty. It is still frustrating to have so much go wrong in roughly 18 months. I do love it when it works properly though.

    • @toddwaters913
      @toddwaters913 4 года назад +1

      Kayak Catfish Can you replace the pylon in the Evolve yourself or you have to send the mount in?
      And do you get a renewed 2yr warranty on the new pylon?

    • @KayakCatfish
      @KayakCatfish  4 года назад

      The pylon is pretty easy to replace in the Evolve Mount. Only takes a few minutes. As for the warranty, it is 2 years from original purchase date. You don’t get a new two year warranty each time they replace a pylon.

    I always knew that one day eventually you would produce a useful video instead of making us look at your face for 25 minutes each video. We had to wait a really, really long time but that day has arrived. The first thing I learned is that you have access to a little pond where you have dumped a few giant catfish and that's where you do a lot of your fishing. Hard to get skunked there when the fish are starving. I hate to admit this review was almost as good as some of the reviews I make. You probably had to do a lot of takes. I hope that Torqeedo doesn't produce a lot of wake and disturb the real purist non sellout kayakers who may be fishing in your area. At least now when they threaten to kick your ass they can never catch you as you speed back to the launch.
