Great tips. Breaking off from a kayak is so sketchy. It's like that moment at the top of a roller coaster when you know what's about to happen but you can't stop your stomach from climbing into your throat when you suddenly fall.

Couple of things I would like to add. If using a line to tie a sinker to a 3 way rig, use 6-8 lb test. When it eventually gets hung, it's easy to break. Also, I used to store my pre-made leaders in a ziplock bag but didn't like the slinky effect when I took them out. I took a bungee cord and strapped a pool noodle to my crate and hook in 8 leaders to the pool noodle. Then again I'm not using 5 ft leaders lol

Thanks for this video at the very least it gives a starting point, and will lead to adaptations for different water conditions. I fish out of a 16 foot boat and am amazed at the fish you pull into your kayak, I would be swimming a lot.
Yep I was curious about that dragon tail sinker too lol. Seems like a crazy concoction from the normal Carolina rig. I also love the idea of the float right above the hook as well and have tried it numerous times with one pole and normal Carolina rig on the other and I've never caught anything with the float lol. Feels like it should work though. Maybe it's because where I fish is so shallow who knows. Great info vid
+Super Hank Outdoors With your river being as shallow as it is, the float would probably put your bait up near the surface lol. Works pretty well for the deeper water here though. Thanks for watching
I appreciate you sharing your rigs. I have been trophy catfishing here in Texas for years and usually use a Carolina rig dragging the bottom. I'm going to try your suspending technique and see how that works here. Some of my spots are super "sticky" with lots of snags. I hope this reduces my tackle loss and need to break off super strong line.

I haven't seen a video yet, at least that I've seen that talked about when to choose either anchor, dragging or suspending and when.
There really aren’t any rules that are set in stone. You can use any technique you want on a given day. Go to a tournament where everyone is fishing the same water and same conditions and ask the people who caught fish what they were doing. You will get a variety of responses. Over time, you will develop your own preferences of what technique to use based on your experiences. Sorry I can’t give a better answer. I wish fishing was black and white. If this happens, do this. It would be a lot easier if it was. Unfortunately you just have to figure out what the fish want on a particular day.

Good eveningJustin,i just got in from the local lake with some sunfish for next month.Ive always reeled my tip to the water and then put in in the rod holder.I don't have a depth finder so I just check one rod every few minutes and if it gets deeper or shallower I figure out how many cranks it takes up or down then I just do the same cranks on each handle to adjust for depth.I believe the closer you keep your bait to the bottom the better youll do.I used power pro for years and switched to 80 pound kast king .its just as thin as power pro and just as strong if not more and it is a lot cheaper.I buy mine in 11 hundred foot spools and never have a partial roll like I did with power pro.I never use mono for my leader for one simple reason.Your mono is your weak link. If you ever hook into a hundred pound cat which may never happen, youll cry your eyes out and be kicking youself all the way home if he breaks off.I caught a 68 pound blue in the exact spot TY was fishing a week before and when I landed him it was TYS line and setup hanging out of its mouth.IVE watched his video on how he rigs up and it was the same even down to the color line,swivel and team catfish hook.They wont ever tell you they lost one on mono.You said their teeth will chafe braid which is true.Cats don't pay attention to a heavy leader line.MY whole life fishing ive used 120 pound meatcaster braid for my leader and it is the most abrasion resistance line I have ever used.IF and when I catch another hog outside of a tangle up or not being hooked good hes mine.One thing ive noticed when you get a fish on your line your poles are super limber and your rod tip even goes underwater a lot of times.I use a little stiffer rod for one reason because a circle hook sets itself when they pull away and run with it.If they have the hook hit their jaw with a fairly stiff rod it will sink in deeper quicker, especially if their hooked in the bony parts of their jaw.Ive noticed on a lot of your videos you get hit but don't always connect or sometimes they get off and you have to be careful to control your anger on video ha,ha.I don't hook every fish that hits mine either, but since I went to a touch stiffer rod I feel I get more solid hooksets.Just my opinion,im in no ways a no it all and never will be,im just constantly trying to examine every aspect.Lifes an adventure I always say and we are forever learning.WHY just yesterday ol PANFISH taught me how to catch fish with a fidget spinner. I put a nice comment on his video and he deleted it.I was just giving him some free sayings for his video.I told him this...............If your a pro or just a beginner youll catch more fish with a fidget spinner.or this one.......IF you want a catfish dinner then try a fidget spinner ha,ha. Keep up the quality videos and we all can learn something.YOU ARE THE BEST OUT THER HANDS DOWN.......NO BRAG JUST FACT.
+Jeff Morris Thanks for the comment Jeff. You make a lot of great points here. I actually used bank line for leaders a few years ago just bc of my fears of losing a big fish with mono. The mono is stiffer than the braid or bank line which is why I ultimately went back to it. With my lines so close together in the kayak, I tend to get a lot of tangles when I hook into a fish and the stiffer line helps me untangle the mess a little quicker. I will absolutely regret it the day I lose a monster bc of mono though.
You make some good points about my rods too. They are a lot more limber than most catfish rods on the market. I had a heavier action rod several years ago (it accidentally went overboard) and just never liked it. It was fine for big fish but smaller fish in the 5-15lb range which is mostly what I catch just aren't as fun to catch on heavier rods. I reserve the right to change my mind at any point especially if I ever hook into one too big to handle with these rods lol.
Like you, I am always learning. It is an ever evolving process.
I caught a bunch on a drop shot or tokyo rig but never had luck with that rattle and float rig out hurrr in arizona

Try lighter test line, until you start to lose too many fish (then bump it back up), so you can break off when you get hung-up on the bottom.

Do you have any preference on circle hooks? I know you said you use 8/0 but didn't specify what brand. Although that looked like Gamakatsu. Just wondering if you did any testing with different kind of circle hook brands and that is what you feel is best or if you believe it does not matter so much.
I used gamakatsu forever but switched to team catfish 8/0 double actionhooks last year.
Kayak Catfish cool. Yeah those are similar to the WhiskerSeeker triple threat hooks. Pretty much almost exact replicas. Those are also really good hooks. What I like is I can now get those at my local tackle shop.

I'm sure you have Justin but have you used bottom bouncers like we use for walleyes up north for dragging? Seems they would work the same as dragon tails and have to be cheaper.

I’ve been running santee Cooper rigs from my kayak and from shore in the lakes. 4-15’ of water. Cut shad and live/cut bluegill for bait. Haven’t had overwhelming success just a single fish here and there. Should I be targeting deeper areas with suspend fishing?
What knots do you use on your hooks? Also what knot for the swivels?
Clinch not for the swivels. If I am using a hook with an offset eye, I use a snell knot. If I am using a hook with a straight eye, I use a clinch knot.

I’m not sure why hook manufacturers offset some and don’t on the others. I just use what works for me.

Where you anchor do you ever suspend your bait or do you cast it out an why ?
I cast my baits out when anchoring. If I suspended while anchoring, inevitably a fish would get wrapped up in my anchor line and it would be a nightmare.
How can I get my hands on some of those long raddle sinker things. Lol
What do you have on your tackle box for fishing.
I don’t keep a tackle box with me in the kayak. I just keep a few extra rigs pre tied in a ziplock bag.
Hey Justin, getting ready to set up two catfish rods for here in Missouri.
When suspend fishing or dragging from Kayak ...... Do I really need braid?
I mean I am not casting for distance and do I really need the more yardage of the thinner braid vs. going the same 60-80 lbs mono?
What size or type of swivels are you using as well?
Braid or mono just comes down to a personal preference. Both work well. As for the swivels, I think I use size the 1/0 size barrel swivels for my suspend fishing rigs and then I use a similar size 3 way for the dragging rigs.

Would a dragon tail work while bank fishing high current area (super rocky bottom) that ppl loose their hole rigs in due to lead getting stuck in the rocks?
Even when just reeling chances are weight gets caught in rocks
I know this is an older video but have you ever tried the demon dragons on your dragging rig?
I have never used demon dragons. Hard for me to justify paying that much for a rattling float. My cheap styrofoam peg floats and rattles accomplish the same task for a few bucks less.

tip: use reasonably weaker line and/or weaker knots for your leader system and especially your sinker, minimizes the chance of losing lots of main line etc. u get the "drift" ehemm ;-).....if this unsettles you think of it as using somewhat stronger main line than the rest of the system. :-)
I fish out of a kayak. It is extremely difficult to break off even 20lb test line. The heavier leaders give me something to grab onto when landing a fish since I don’t have room for a big net in the kayak. There is a method to my madness. If I fished out of a boat, I would definitely use a lighter leader though.
gotcha, In my kayak I use a easy to grab mono leader that is still slightly weaker than my main line (braid), the relative strength is what's important. I test on the bench
Whats your opinion of metal/steel leaders? I have used metal for small cats, 3 to 15lbs......but what do you think of them for heavier cats?
I have never used them but I imagine they would work just fine.

I'm just curious what other species of fish you catch by accident when your catfishing.
Are you using Abu 5000 or 6000’s with that 80# braid? And, have you ever had an issue with that strong of line on those Ambassadeurs?
My abu reels are the 5000 models but I would recommend going with 6000’s just for the added line capacity. Never had an issue with the 80lb braid on them.
How long is your dragging tube ?
Any recommendations for suspend fishing on a lake with out a fish finder or depth finder? Not lot of current but wind(badin lake if you're familiar) would like to drift and suspend fish. Not a fan of anchor line. Awesome vids everytime 👌
You will have a tough time suspend fishing while drifting without a way to monitor your depth. The best recommendation I could give is to try to find you a used depth finder. They can often be found used in the $50 range. You don’t need fancy features. Just something to show the depth.

Yes, I just use 80lb monofilament for my leader.
Then why do I see theese spool of lines that specifically labelled leader line? Is there a type of leader that is nit made if regular mono fishing line?
I don’t know. Some leader material is made of fluorocarbon and some of those leader spools are for fly fishing. All I can tell you is that I use regular 80lb mono for my leaders. It works for me.

I made acouple of these and tried them in the river with a current and I could feel bumping off the rocks,but at one point when I brought it in the line was wrapped all around the 30" tube sinker I made.So are these not recommended in a river with a current unless I can go alittle faster than the current.I am in a Jon boat..How fast can I drift or drag and still entice fish?
If you are fishing in current, you either need to go downstream a little faster than the current speed or you can go against the current if it is a light flow (0.5mph or less). Using them while drifting with the current wouldn’t make any sense. The bait would either get pushed out in front of the sinker which defeats the purpose or get tangled up around it which sounds like what you experienced. Dragging is typically a more effective technique during the times when you don’t have current. As for speed, 0.3-0.5mph is where I have had the most success.
Thanks..Most rivers I know always have a current.Seems they are geared mainly for the type of fishing you have since you are always referring to the flow rate that day or lack of the current I believe you refer to.I like this idea though since when I did have it out I could feel it bouncing along for the brief time I used it .I did get hung up though,but not sure it was the hook or the weight.Got it free luckily.I fish a very rocky river.

I use a Carolina rig for bank fishing. It works fine for that application.
