I agree with some of what you said, disagree with others. Context - I own 2 Outbacks ('17 and '19) and have probably close to 2000 miles of inshore fishing on them and several thousand hours. I fish saltwater out of Florida. - Hobie Quality / Warranty - I developed a crack in the seating area of the hull in my '19 in first 2 years. Hobie replaced it under warranty. My buddy has a Pro Angler and is on his 3rd hull as both developed cracks around the skeg. Verdict - Warranty team supported us, replacement process was time consuming, shouldn't have cracked in the first place. In general, the Mirage Drive has been reliable and parts readily accessible (most common parts are on Amazon). While not cheap to repair, the modular design makes repairs usually pretty reasonable (
Bought my 2013 Outback brand new for $1,800 and I thought I was crazy for spending that much for a kayak glad I have it now . I would never pay what they want for them now , heck the car I drive daily I only paid $2.700 for three yrs ago . Thanks for your honest reviews and videos.
for $1000 less than a pa 12 and you basically get the same big boat, but with WAY MORE OPTIONS yup, proofs my theory of hobies being $1000 over price, hope you enjoy the prop drive this time haha
I just sold my Outback 2022 recently and decided to order the Titan X Propel. I’ve been a Hobie guy for years and agree with your stance. So much more value than the Hobie.
I just "got" an ooold 09' Hobie Mirage Pro Angler. FOR FREE (Spent $200 in gas) Now that was a great deal! It has the known problems of cracks developing below the water line. The owner was about to chop it up and throw it in a dumpster because he couldn't get it to stop leaking. I SAVED IT!! I have a lot of experience repairing kayaks (Owned 100+) and welcomed the challenge. It took me about 12 hours off/on (Rainy day) but I filled it with water and not a drop came out after my permanent repairs of HOT PLASTIC STUCK TO HOT PLASTIC REINFORCED WITH STAINLESS WIRE MESH. (Hobie scraps from a kayak shop) Do not use patches, putties, bondo, JB Weld etc. on a PLASTIC kayak. I do cover my tested patches with rubber backed aluminum AC tape just as an extra precaution. Alex, I get a kick out of your videos... Even the silly ones have great info. I don't know if I'm allowed to share links but I posted a quick video overview of my Pro Angler 14 Repairs on my channel if you're interested. Thanks for your info!
i loved my 2017 hobie outback.. i used my brothers 2022 hobie outback and wasnt a big fan of the rudder being on the bottom of the kayak. today im picking up an old town predator pdl and cannot wait to get it in the water
have my BW 132 for the last 3 years, never flipped it..not even close. I even jumped out of it cuz I dropped my rod in the water. Keep your head centered as much as possible, you'll have no issues. Keep in mind, that goes for all kayaks ;)
Stability wise the Nucanoe Unlimited is far beyond the proangler. Slightly softer hull, but I liked mine. I had an elevated seat base and a bow mount motorguide, and still could bring my 100lb dog and gear, or another passenger.
When you say softer, does it gouge up easily? I have a Native Slayer Max I’m trying to sell it and possibly get the Unlimited. Also, a guy on RUclips said the “kissers” can sometimes crack but it’s easily fixed. I have no idea what a “kisser” is. Apparently on the bottom of the kayak somewhere 🤷♂️
The “kissers” are kiss offs built into the hull for rigidity. Imagine a scupper that doesn’t have a hole in the center of it. It’s just a section built into the mold to tie the deck and bottom of the hull together.
I've seen the fragility of the Mirage drive several times in recent years when a friend's PA14 drive had cable breaks. The worst thing about it is that the PAs are tanks and a massive chore to paddle back to the launch! I did have a couple of issues with my Propel drive over the 7 1/2 years that I've owned my Slayer Propel 13. I love the fact that I was able to paddle it back to the truck very easily. Heck, my drive was being repaired by the Native folks and I took a 5 mile fishing trip with my paddle alone... couldn't think of doing that with either the PA12 or PA14.
yeah I feel for anyone who has to deal with the new/even more expensive mirage drives. I have a good old 180 with turbo fins. first time (and last time) I took it out on the flats I came upon a shallow spot and the PA being the heavy behemoth that it is tore one of the fins. the dealership wanted to charge me 250$ to put a new fin on. order one from amazon Poped the pin and put it in myself then stuck it to the Hobie dealership. yes its fragile and the new ones seem to snap from what I've heard.
if you are ok with the heavy price, lynx is nice, light (hull under 50# ) , stable for what it is, fast! i would love to have one but i aint paying that much bro, sorry just does not make sense for me, but thats me
@@AliexFolgueira No crap Alex! I want Lynx or a Passport. The Perception Crank is really nice and cheaper but I will need a trailer and hitch package. Right now I'm using J bars rooftop on Mt Subaru Outback. Fishing out of Lifetime Tamarack Pro paddle kayak (57lbs) . At $400 new out the door I couldn't pass up the price. Maybe a Pelican Gateway can be a alternative
great price! maybe try a small motor on the rear? footrest steering? light battery? something like a watersnake and a 30 ah amped lithium battery? you know i will make that video soon! i got all the tools, CAN MY CHEAP KAYAK SETUP BEAT YOUR EXPENSIVE OLD TOWN OR HOBIE?
@@AliexFolgueira 😂 like no. The Tamarack Pro is rated for 300lbs, I'm at 225-230lbs. I already have several things on it plus 4-5 rods on it. But I'll definitely check out the new video
Upgraded from a vibe seaghost 110 to a hobie compass and it was pretty much night and day. I had a motor setup on my seaghost that still translates to the hobie well but the 180 drive has been incredible. Found a solid sale during the season change and feel like I got my moneys worth. One thing I am disappointed in - the finishing of final product, why keep a circle hatch in a 2022 compass when they know everyone upgrades to square? Why no deck padding? Why no car loader included? Ultimately those weren’t enough to take me away from the compass because it fit my needs for car-topping + pedal drive + standing + motor.
if it is possible try to demo, if you demo a prop drive from say old town it will give you a lot of info about the others like native, for hobies you gotta dmeo a hobie, the hobie drive is way better than what the other fin drive competition offer. I have a series on my channel about tips for new kayaks and stuff it is ruclips.net/p/PLfXm-PtTlrvzvxA0df2pwnNYsLa8lSD0s
Hobies aren't for everyone. I paid a lot for my PA12 360 and have no regrets. It's great for the way I crab and fish. The maneuverability of the 360 drive is pretty amazing. I often fish tight quarters and it's great for crabbing a trotline. I've never had an issue with stability. Whatever kayak you get, you need to take the time to understand how it handles and know it's limits. There are times I felt like I was going to flip, but I probably shouldn't have been out there in those conditions. If you can, you should demo a bunch of kayaks before you decide to buy. Everyone is built different and it could be a different experience for each person.
Hobie had a nationwide sale in August and September. Their dealers were allowed to discount their Hobie kayaks up to 25% off. I bought a brand new Hobie Outback still in the packaging from a local dealer during that sale for $2745. At that price I absolutely feel I got my money's worth. I have no complaints with the kayak so far.
@AliexFolgueira yeah at the regular price I wouldn't have bought the boat but basically being able to buy the Outback for the price of a Sportsman 120? I couldn't pass that up.
I paid $2700:for a PA 14 new in 2010 and I have a 16ft Hobie Adventure Fish that upgraded to a GT drive I could care less about reverse drives in my saltwater fishing and are far less issues but still beats paddling my Ocean Kayak Big Game Prowler
I will say this, if you fish in alot of shallow grassy areas you cant beat the Hobie mirage drive. In my opinion I think the engineering and design put into the Hobie PAs are superior to many other kayaks (Seat, rod storage, mirage drive, storage, pull cord organization). If you plan on just peddling and not motorizing, I think Hobie is the best. If you are going to put on a motor then there are much better options. I think getting the PA12 180 would be a better buy than the 360 though.
My old hobie had the most uncomfortable seat . Also , very hard to paddle . And very bad cusomer service when I called . So, went ahead and ordered a feelfree lure 11.5 like my friend’s kayak . The seat was amazing and was very easy to paddle . Perfect kayak for me . I have seen some of the new seats and made me curious . But , I will stick to the feelfree lure . I am to happy with it and have done a lot of customizing to make it near perfect for me . I even did some customizing to the seat doubled the padding and extended it to the end of the seat behind my knees . It is like relaxing in a nice chair at home . And the customer service has been great with feelfree . They sent me some free parts I needed after i had already had the kayak for 2 years .
My first yak was a lifetime tamarack I paid under $300 for, I fished out of it for over 4 years and I had such a great time. Best $300 I probably ever spent, fishing that long out of it I learned what I didn't like and so I made the upgrade to the Old Town Sportsman 106 PDL. Quite a jump in price but having fished out of it now close to 30 times it was such a great investment. My biggest gripe is the plastic rudder which I intend to upgrade this winter.
Agree with everything you said. I have owned several hobies. Now I have one Hobie and I have to say I love it! Hobie adventure island . I just wish with the amount of $$$ spent you wouldn't or shouldn't have to worry about water getting into hull through the compartments. Seals do not work!! Thanks for video!
I’m here for the comments 😂 I can only speak for the behemoth 14’ that I own ….I will have to agree, while I do love my PA the price point is excessive on the initial purchase as well as any replacement parts and accessories from them. The other thing I agree with is the use, are hobie kayaks great, sure but it’s not fit for every type of fishing/recreational use. Pro’s and Con’s to everything……kayak, boat, car, home etc do your research to see what fits you best
Best all around speed and stability kayak. Jackson big rig with the mk4. Hands down. Granted, I haven’t been in the titan x yet but soon. You just can’t beat the big rig for storage though. Those sides where you can put stuff are awesome
I bought my adventure island for 2k and my PA 14 for 1500$. yes thats right. I got both those yaks for half of what a new PA costs. sure the PA is not a 360 and the adventure island is one of the older models but both kayaks serve their purpose (catching fish and having fun). I dont look down upon anyone who uses anything else other than Hobie nore do I care if someone uses only Hobie. all I know is Hobie can go screw itself with its retail pricing and you made a good point about the warranty issues people have been having from lack of quality control. if your paying retail price for a premium flagship product from a "top of the line" brand, you should get top of the line service and warranty. however I will say that I have tested out other kayaks (which I love) such as the kraken, native water craft ect. and tbh the only other kayak im considering is a fiber glass composite/sea kayak so I can glide like a knife through butter. for me the PA is a fish killing machine and the adventure island is a boredom killing machine. if I had space for only 2 kayaks in my garage I would have only those......... but they have to be from craigslist cause im not gonna sell my kidney to get a shiny new PA
hey bro, first of all, thank you for making this vid and speak the truth of hobies price! but what about a hobie lynx! in my opinion, the lynx is out of this speaking, i believe the lynx is way way better than so many kayaks out there in the market. i would like to hear ur opinion about it please.
Wonder if the other youtuber you speak of was rxangler. He hopped on old town’s teat recently and made a dis video recently. After having a video come out a year earlier talking about why he was switching back to Hobie. You guys are just making click bait videos with click bait titles. Stay hustling and keep making these controversial videos to keep you in the algorithm. #gettinclickscashinchecks
there is zero clickbait in this video. the title and thumbnail is telling the viewer "your hobie kayak sucks" and i explained why, with facts. there are tons of videos on youtube from many regarding hobie issues. tons of posts on Facebook about broken hobies too
Definitely agree with the fact that Hobie kayak are too expensive, especially with the crazy stuff the competition is coming out with recently. Altough honestly, paying full price for pretty much anything (I mean beside stuff like food and rent :D) says more about you than Hobie prices. I got my Hobie Outback kayak full price but it came with a free 1000$ gift card from the store that was selling it, without that promotion I would have never bought it! At -1k$ on their price, the Outback is a hell of a proposition (I prefered it over anything OldTown offered, and pretty much every decent company hardly distribute their kayaks outside the US).
106 pdl is a nice boat! come to think of it hobie doesnt really have a nice 106 for fishing they have the passport but it is like their ultra budget boat, hope they do a 106 outback like one day
@@AliexFolgueira That paddle drive just seems like a lot hands on, the reverse function alone on a peddle drive is superior IMO..Unless you aren't fishing maybe the Hobe wouldn't be too bad? But I fish with mine so the paddle drive is no bueno for me, Nice topic! thanks.
I think I've told you this before? My buddy talked me into buying a Hobie, just before I did I watched one of your videos on the feel free Dorado. I ended up going with the Dorado, my opinion 10 times better then his Hobie. I got rid of my feel free Dorado, I got the three water. But then you talked me into the Pelican 130, and that even today is still one of my favorite! He got rid of his Hobie, and bought a three water. You have helped a lot of people make their decisions!
I have been thinking about cost lately at what point the best isn't the best anymore, I don't enjoy a $20 a pound ribeye but I do love a $10 a pound ribeye
I told someone a couple weeks ago. For everything I get out of my Pelican 130. The very few times I really need reverse in an instant. I'll save that $3,000 and use it on more fishing gear. And even the latest Hobie, doesn't compare to how light my Pelican is! Especially when you're pulling it through the woods.
Had an outback once and sold it when I saw one with cracks and reading about cracking issues???? Just not for me. I think the PA14 is AWESOME but with you, not spending that much on one and to me it’s not an ocean going kayak? Maybe big lakes and rivers but ocean? Chop? Butt is too high and if you got rolled recovery is gonna be a wench.
Hobie is outrageously overpriced. I find myself getting simpler. Last time I went out, I floated on a 2x12 with my pole resting on the board in front of me 😜
I agree that Hobie is perhaps a little overpriced, but in this day in age $1000 off an Outback would make them a best value on the market. Reliability and warranty is also a huge concern for sure.
Hobie had the best kayak in the world and the best warranty until 2018, when the Outback costs US$2,300.00 posted here in Brazil. The 2019 Outback was a disaster in terms of seaworthiness, with its highly buoyant stern that caused the bow to dip into the water and its short rudder was left in the air, losing steering. The increase in prices and the sale to the group of investors who have nothing to do with sports gave us today's horrible Hobie with products that seem to have gone through a process of continuous worsening.
You seem to love to hate Hobie, but you can't. To say why Hobie sucks is immature and clickbait for your channel. Premium kayaks come at a premium price. Don't want to pay for the Hobie brand's unique systems? Buy another brand. You have a democratic vote to buy something else, but Hobie's success cannot be ignored. They have done many things right. Jealousy oozes from this video. Enjoy your inferior fishing kayaks.
Aliex, I agree 100% with you about Hobie want ALL of your money! There are many other quality kayaks for a lot less money. Greed man, just Greed. F*** Hobie! I'm spending my money elsewhere.
Price is too high. No instance reverse. Left them off my list. I never actually see them while I am out fishing. I see old town bonafide, pelicans and various other cheap kayaks getting it done.
Lol Hard when the Island has only one dealer.. they only sell Hobies here on Maui.. no service we Do it all here…Come maui 95Percent of kayaks all Hobie… you going pay to play here… they proven in ruff waters here, if you flip an pro angler you shouldn’t be on Kayak 😂 every guy who had a old town or scupper or anything else is on sell on Craigslist here… Hobie prices are ridiculous but what can we do 🤷🏾..
Land Rover and BMW aren’t all that great either but they sure are nice to drive … HOBIE is a Love it or Hate it… I Love my Tandem Islander and my Lynx…
Outback is the perfect kayak, but here in CR the prices are super high. In here the outback prices is the same that US pro angler price And it was 2 years ago
@@AliexFolgueira You told it like it is! I have heard too many people who were Hobie die hard owners talking about the 180 that they have done since new ownership took over. I think the Hobie brand is in a nose dive and they might not pull out of it!
DON'T FORGET TO LIKE THE VID I also hope you watched the full video before commenting 😊 1.5 speed works great on my voice 😅😅

Pro’s and Con’s to everything……kayak, boat, car, home etc do your research to see what fits you best
you should have done this video brother not me haha
@@AliexFolgueira 😅 I’m not ready for the push back lol
lets go catch some reds, im hungry
Well said
hey bro, first of all, thank you for making this vid and speak the truth of hobies price! but what about a hobie lynx! in my opinion, the lynx is out of this speaking, i believe the lynx is way way better than so many kayaks out there in the market.
i would like to hear ur opinion about it please.
Lynx excels! Great boat, but too money money
yea bro i agreed with the price, but before 1 or 2 years ago wasn't that expensive i guess. like now! price increased for sure. @@AliexFolgueira
Outback at $1000 off is a I can't pass on deal
I'll stick to the OldTown 106 PDL, Quality at a fair price! Better drive IMO.
But I fish with mine so the paddle drive is no bueno for me, Nice topic! thanks.
Paid right at 2700 hobie outback in 2020. Yea. There is other options. Love my outback price increase over 30% wow
30% increase for new color options, I mean even the biggest fan will be hurt, has to be said hobie isn't the only one that raised prices though
@@AliexFolgueira they all went up. Boat ownership is starting to look more appealing for sure.
yup i can see that, specially lots of people now trying to get rid of their setups
4:40 pegar "onda" com caiaque para águas abrigadas pediu. hahahaha
#6 they recently got bought out by a corporation and that's why warranty claims have started sucking.
i hear that a lot
Especially when you're pulling it through the woods.
i agree, i mostly use reverse when im using a pdl drive, like i adapt to the kayak
I love hobie but you’re right way too expensive with no features and the only thing I see for 2024 is new colors
yup no new nothing for a while, kinda sad
You have seen the light!! They aren’t even Hobie anymore, they are owned by an investment company
that's true
in Australia it will cost you approx A$5490.not cheap at all,i could but a small boat and motor cheaper than that.
Crazy
I have the Outback. Got it used for 1500.00. My buddy has three. Two of them cracked. Not impressed.
Very common story
Great vid
I have a Hobie Lynx. It is overpriced for sure, maybe a little fragile, but I dont have any complaints. It is lightweight and saves my back.
100% that boat is nice! Price sucks though
Hello Aliex, this is one straight up video just the facts but the ending is spot on you be your own judge👊🎣👍
thanks brother :) I wanted to end on a positive note, i think it worked :)
Cracking issue has been resolved I believe. I am in the market for buying kayak been watching lot of videos on here. 😊
Agreed on both points
Enjoy your inferior fishing kayaks.
are you drunk?
@@benruthlessburger8905 But he is correct. Much better option got less. Good kayaks just way overpriced.
Premium product 😂😂😂
It’s not a premium product…
Aliex, I agree 100% with you about Hobie want ALL of your money! There are many other quality kayaks for a lot less money. Greed man, just Greed. F*** Hobie! I'm spending my money elsewhere.
Yeah too much money for what it offers
👍@@AliexFolgueira
I have a big fish 103 & perfect for me ❤it
The quality of the Hobie Mirage Lynx is so bad. You really have to install extra padding to protect it from dings, etc.
Hobie is going belly up 360 drive breaks like clock work
Bad reputation now kayaks are being made with less resin
you do see a lot of that being reported
Great informative video
Glad it was helpful!
I’m glad I decided to buy a old town 😂👍
Land Rover and BMW aren’t all that great either but they sure are nice to drive … HOBIE is a Love it or Hate it… I Love my Tandem Islander and my Lynx…
taden island for the win!
MIC DROP! WHAT HE SAID. LOL!
Thank you 😁
U right! All new stuff is over priced! Buy used!!!
I’m from Costa Rica and i pay $4800 for my outback 2021 🤯
wow thats crazy, but was it worthy? outback is nice
Outback is the perfect kayak, but here in CR the prices are super high. In here the outback prices is the same that US pro angler price And it was 2 years ago
Hobie's used to be good! Maybe 20 years ago! Now they are making them out of thinner softer plastic that can not hold up for years.
TONNNYYYY, you probable know me more than others here, was I fair to hobie?
@@AliexFolgueira You told it like it is! I have heard too many people who were Hobie die hard owners talking about the 180 that they have done since new ownership took over. I think the Hobie brand is in a nose dive and they might not pull out of it!
So do you drive a 60k car or truck? That sucks, way too much! And Ferrari is not a huge seller but it is a very good car. But it is not for everyone.
2017 Compass MSRP $1950. 2023 MSRP now $2799
2019 Outback MSRP $2499. 2023 MSRP $3699
😂
Lol! It is very overprized indeed.
All true😂
Happy Sunday 😊
@@AliexFolgueira and to you also!
All kayaks without exception cost too much money for what you get.
Yeah the outback should be 2800
yup
How to manufacture RUclips views; troll known brands
nobody cares about hobies anymore lol this video isn't gutting views lol 😂
There for people who have a lot of money
It’s called inflation dollar sucks lol
Hobie deserve all bashing! Since 2019 all their gear became uttermost trash.
cant you try lol
😅😅😅😅 epic
Hahah thank
Made in Mexico 😂😂😂
Not a US product
dont break their heart lol
@@AliexFolgueira with Chinese products
@@BankaiZenbonsakura ohh boy lol
The reason you pay too much is because Hobie is in high tax, high regulated, high cost California.
Great point
MF how about you recommend another kayak instead of just say cons.
did you even watch the video? lol
stop lying pls
i dont lie bro! unlike hobie blind lovers!
