DIY Cat Condo: From Old Dresser to Purr-fect Hideaway!

- In this video, I'm turning a drawer-less & veneer damaged dumpster find into a super cool, one of a kind cat 'condo'. I had some veneer repairs to do, as well as restoring the walnut veneer on the dresser carcass. For the cat condo portion, I tried to use as much material as possible, utilizing scraps from a cabinet maker, scraps of my own from other projects, a discarded carpet roll, and for the sleeping areas, purchased dining chair cushions from a discount store and made custom pillow covers for them.
I was supposed to take part in the Furniture Flipping Pet Challenge (which released on YT last Saturday) hosted by @thekraftycreech and @coloredcaboosecreations .Unfortunately, I missed the challenge and playlist but you can find it on their pages, as well as checking out the winners!

I have a Raccoon friend... and, besides setting up a paddling pool for her, I got her a squeaky toy. She was THRILLED! She knew it was 'hers'/for her.

To be honest, I thought the plants on the design were just going to be artwork on the wood, which I thought was pretty cool. My vote is for artwork rather than actual plants.
That’s exactly what I was thinking. With your artistic ability, I would do a little mural. 👍🏼
I agree: use artwork instead of the actual box and plants. If my Siamese was any indication, the plants would be out of the box and on the floor in no time, with the box soon to follow.
I love how you used the white trim around the color blocks. It makes it more dimensional, and sets off the colors better, than the colors next to each other. It may not have been in your plan, but it was an excellent decision.

First of all, since I’ve been sewing for more than 50 years and don’t do wood, let me congratulate you on your choice of a sewing machine! That’s a terrific machine, and it will run for you forever. Having a machine with no computer is a HUGE bonus! I have two that are like yours (because we’re snowbirds and spend our winters where it’s warm so I need one in each place) and I LOVE them! Some of my friends who sew have really expensive machines with a million bells and whistles … and they don’t use any of them. 🙄 The thread you used looks like Serger thread, so if you find it breaks or balls up or whatever, it’s not the machine. 🧵 Your pillow-stuffing technique was perfect. You could put a little velcro in the opening if you find you want it all the way closed, but you did an excellent job!

I agree about non computerized sewing machines. I have three different machines. One from the 1930s, an old 70s Sears Kenmore and a 70s Montgomery Ward Signature. All of them are work horses that need minimal servicing. I wouldn't trade them for a modern machine ever.
Im a vintage machine mechanic, and i second this! Excellent machine. Use only sewing machine oil or triflow, and life will be good forever.

I love your flip, I think it turned out beautifully and your ethos of reusing old pieces is admirable as we have far too much waste in the world. The cats inspection of the piece, and their different reactions was just so cute and shows the different personalities of each.

It was simply impossible for me to figure out how you were going to pull the cat condo together---but, of course, I knew you would, and the joy of watching you do so was addictive. I think my favorite part was watching you repair the veneer, especially when you showed the result during the "reveal"---perfection! And the reveal is priceless with Nacho and Willie. Adorable. Thanks for one of the most pleasurable 40-45 minutes ever! So much fun.

Beautiful result! When I first saw the video title, I read "MGM" instead of MCM and I immediately pictured the MGM lion logo but with a cat, sort of like Mary Tyler Moore did with her MTM production company logo. And Nacho makes the perfect "lion"! I agree with another commenter that some of your art work would be preferable to the planter box that Nacho might want to play with. Everything you do is extraordinary. It’s too bad you were unable to finish in time because you definitely would’ve placed, I would say first but one of the judges built from scratch a famous mini MCM chair for her dog that was extremely impressive. I also love that you took a piece of furniture with missing pieces at most cannot figure out what to do with and created a masterpiece😍

This is amazing. Your creativity always stuns me. You come up with the most unique ideas and designs. Willie might not look that impressed, but Nacho seems to love it.
As for the white panel. I think one of your drawings would be a better option than that box. I can already see the cats trying to get at the plants or into the box and tear it off. Which would be a shame.

WOW! This is amazing! I mean, all your work is but with this it wasn’t as clear to me where you were going and I’m so glad for that because you took this “trash” and made the most amazing treasure! Nacho loves it so much you even got slow blinks! I can’t thank you enough for explaining what you do, why you do it and about wood in general. I had no idea how veneers worked to sandwich wood to protect it. And thank you for changing my perception of veneers in general. I used to be guilty of thinking it was somehow subpar. I’m in my mid 20’s so these are great life lessons! I think the box doesn’t need to go on the front…I can imagine if it were my cats it would get torn off. But maybe leave it on top and plant organic cat grass? ❤

An amazing condo for the boys! If I might suggest that a small window be added in that white panel where the plants would be... maybe a window with a little (thinner than what you had built) planter box in front so that whomever is sleeping on that shelf can get a small peek as to what's around them. You could even put curtains up if you wanted. 😅

I know I'm late to this - but I was thinking of a window with a planter box that you could put wheat grass in for them to nibble on. Good for the cats, adds greenery, and lets you see inside if needed!

This video makes me think back to my teen years, when I helped my brother-in-law build a playset for my niece and nephew. It was the first time I'd ever picked up a power tool. After a week, I learned I'm great with my hands, and had an incredible experience. I want to build my cat a kitty condo now.

Nice! I love the whole idea of converting regular furniture to kitty housing. I haven’t don’t any yet. I also,appreciate you show how you measure and make angles, add shelving, all the fixes. My navy days are 35+ yrs ago, I worked in our carpenter shop and learned a lot but not enough. You help fill in my knowledge gaps and I feel more confident I will get my project right. To be clear few people do anything perfectly. Trial and error creates new things! Love it!

I love the way you saved the heart of the piece and turned it into gorgeous kitty digs. If cats worked and came home after a long day, they'd lay down in their house sipping tunatinis out of tiny cat sized martini glasses. Tunatinis: warm water and juices from a high quality cat tuna wet food. Mine like Applaws Tuna and Crab. Titrate the juice out, add warm water (they prefer these warm. Shaken not stirred). From my two kittehs 8 paws up for this lovingly restored piece for furry family you love.

Your fur babies are lucky to have you! Wow! I wished I had asked my Dad to teach me more about carpentry so I can make cool stuff like what you’re doing but it’s too late now. He’s passed away a long time ago. I always enjoy watching people like you who are artists, craftsmen, cabinet makers or any other creative folks because it reminds me of my family. We are each good or specialized in making things or drawing or whatever else and I think it’s because of my parents. It’s just in our genes. Anyways, thank you for letting us a peek into your creative process and what you’re thinking and changing as your design and work evolves in that time. It takes a lot of courage to be willing to be vulnerable on camera to show how you work because not every artist or craftsman are comfortable doing so for different reasons.

This is a late post but I HAD to make a comment none the less! I LOVE this. I'm so glad you salvaged this piece and kept the majority of it to it's original design and material. This style is my favorite. I love the simple lines. I believe this is 60's era. If you ever decide to sell this I would LOVE to have a chance to purchase it (although I love in the central U.S.)! My husband and I rescued a kitten several years ago! There MUST be an invisible sign in our yard that says: "Stray kittens welcome here", as that one cat has turned into 12 (serious)! Every kitten/cat is a rescue and has been spayed and or neutered, has all shots and we're well known at our local vet (she's a saint)! Our babies ARE our life! All are spoiled and we love them all! We wouldn't have it any other way! Thanks for sharing! Your talent and creativity are superb! Your babies look so sweet! It's clear they're well loved! hugs, from a cat mama to another!
