- Hurricane Helene remains a Category 4 storm as it is expected to bring damaging hurricane winds and storm surge Thursday evening to the Big Bend region of Florida.
As Hurricane Helene nears the northeast Gulf Coast, it's expected to bring "catastrophic" winds and storm surge to parts of the region, according to the National Hurricane Center.

Different insurance company. Flood is seperate. Probably 20% of people there have flood insurance
It's Florida. Flood insurance is almost a must if you live by the coast
@@donchaput8278More than 20%. Atleast on or near the coast is nearly 90%. Overall may be 20%. Either way, I wouldn't own a home in Florida without flood insurance. No matter the location 😅
@@donchaput8278 When I lived in Florida (twenty years ago), a block from the Intercoastal, I checked a couple days before a storm was projected to hit. I was told my flood insurance did not cover storm surge. It didn't cover flooding due to rain being unable to drain due to storm surge. And it didn't cover damage from sewage backing up into my condo due to storm surge. In short...It didn't cover anything. Best part? The rep was LAUGHING when she told me this.

My family and I have lived through so many hurricanes. My mother used to talk about the '45 hurricane that hit Biloxi -- back before we named them or had the current categories or most of the warnings. We had ways of knowing -- clouds on the horizon, animal activity, especially shore bird activity, communication from ships and islands in the path before it made landfall along our coast. I remember the devastation of Camille, lifting one side of a giant interstate bridge and dropping it on top of the other side of the bridge. Pine needles driven at high speed like nails into the side of a telephone pole. My grandmother's mail discovered by a lady 5 miles inland. I hope enough people have evacuated that we won't have another debacle like Katrina.
Our family in Biloxi Ms. Survived Katrina. The buildings and homes that lined highway 90 Along the Beach. The only thing left standing was the concrete slabs. We rode the storm out on the roof of our home for over 4 hours since the tidal surge was flowing over the most of the roof top.
Shrimp boats that had gone up river for safety from the surge where washed further
up river stacking them 3
boats high on top of each other. We have pictures of cars that where found on top of school buses. Katrina a true hurricane nightmare
Thank you for saying this. This isn’t nearly as bad as Katrina. I always feel duped by the media.
There’s a reason why Florida is the shape that it is and we’re witnessing right now. Mother Nature doing her thing for eons. Nothing new. We just decided to build our stuff there regardless of the signs.

lol, we need to bring back plants and trees like mangroves. without these key items in florida's citys and towns flooding is only going to get worse. Like what? you're telling me grass ditches are going to stop storm surges? get real florida.
Yep
Or just building along the beaches in general. The natural coastline should extend well inland with dunes and the fauna that hold them together. Roads, concrete and condos are just making erosion worse and sky rocketing insurance rates for everyone. It’s all eventually going to return to Mother Nature in very short geologic time anyway.

This what happens when you cut down all the mangroves in order to have a nice house on the shore.
That right there!
As a northern Yankee I must ask... What do mangroves do with a 20 foot storm surge? Or is it just the point that you shouldn't build right next to the water??? I deal with snow by the foot not mangroves and hurricanes so I'm a bit lost by this comment
I think the original poster means that the houses are in a zone that should have been destined for mangroves, not necessarily that the mangroves protect from very high storm surges. I believe they are bringing light to the fact that the houses were inappropriately built on land that is not supposed to inhabited by people. The mangroves being cut become an important image as a sort of symbol of human folly.
@@brokenbravo83Quick google search says
Protecting coastlines
Mangroves protect coastlines from erosion, storm surges, and tsunamis. They also help prevent damage to coastal properties. Reducing flooding
Mangrove peat absorbs water during heavy rains and storm surges, which reduces the risk of coastal flooding

Building in flood zones ....... why should tax payers have to pay to rebuild?
Im in clearwater, non flood zone. All day play ps5, during outage my solar panel generator keep me in shape(only no internet) . Ps: only idiots buy in flood zones
It is criminal - taking money from those with the intelligence to build in a safe elevated area that won't be affected by storm surge - and giving it to fools so they can rebuild in the same storm surge area. There should be no taxpayer funds for this and insurance companies should not insure these nitwits. Insurance for those in known flood areas is causing all our rates to go up.
All home owners insurance pay for damages to those homes on the beaches. I live in Kentucky, well far away from hurricanes. Why should we pay for that ?!
The highest point in all of Florida is 350ft. If you build in Florida you’re building in a flood zone.
