I decided to do something different and over year ago took up FG guitar school sweep picking course. What a great discovery ;-) And I have been practicing with metronome since then. I am

Man, please read this, you just solved all of my problems.
I used to pick like you used to before like using the finger tips and thumb for holding the pick,
Now after shifting to what you showed in this video, my playing speed literally doubled, and the note clarity, time signature, sweeps, alternate picking speed, everything became crystal perfect and exactly how I imagined I wanted to play,
I have been playing since 5 years, and no one corrected this for me.
I always thought the problem is my left hand, that it is slow and can't coordinate with my right hand at all.
Turns out it was always the way I hold my pick.
Thank you so much for this video, I just can't express how deeply this 1 thing has affected my guitar playing.
I can now play all the fast solos and riffs I was stuck on, In just a day.
    Thank you again💜

Amazing. I have been playing with my fingernail as if it were a pick (instead of fingerstyle) the entire time - since I find this most comfortable. But nowadays I am coming to realise a pick would help my speed, accuracy AND clarity a ton. This is very reassuring Alex. I'm a self taught player and started around 1987. I naturally developed economy picking although I didn't know it was a thing back then. It was only when I saw other people playing alternate picking that I thought I was doing something wrong and considered relearning but I'm now glad I didn't! I also anchor my little finger on the body and again, tried to stop doing it as I thought it was a bad habit but seeing someone of your colossal ability doing it has made me realise that it's actually ok! Thanks Alex!

Thanks for the video! Very useful, I used to play exactly like that, (bar the little finger) but now use a flatter string attack and hold it like you used to. I also convinced myself at 21 that if I alternate picked my technique would improve. 15 years later I've just ditched that idea completely and am now only economy picking. What I've realised is that I think I've always been an economy picker. It gets a bad rap but makes complete sense to me. Now I'm really enjoying being able to play without the constraints of alternate picking. And it sounds great. Economy till I die! p.s. I love Frank's playing too, so that helps!

I use the tortex sharp as well. You get way better note clarity from sharp picks

I use a similar picking technique you and frank use and always found it great especially for sweeping but I must admit I do incorporate a bit of the Yngwie when I use fast alternate picking but that is just what works for me. That is what is great about the guitar there are no rules, do what works for you and be happy 😃 🤘👍

I remember when I 'discovered' economy picking for myself - in my naive younger years I thought I had found something nobody else knew about. It was like unlocking a secret power (or an extra 'gear' as Frank would say) that made picking super fast super easy - then I discovered Frank and his teaching materials and realised that this was a well established technique that extended far beyond the basic applications I was using it for.
    Great lesson Alex - cheers.

Great video. I have such a hard time with economy picking, even after a lot of practice it always sounds very stilted and uneven, especially the more strings involved, and I don't often intuit how to start a sequence right away, i have to actually think about how to start it. But man, people good at it make me feel like I need to keep revisiting it. It has to be worth it.

I still use your old grip but my downstrokes are played with the back edge of the pick (edge closest to palm) and upstrokes the front edge. Also some runs I initially found difficult turned out to be much easier by leading with an upstroke.
