- I try to play jazzy half way through, but even that doesn’t last long. 😂
#RockerAtHe❤️rt
This was taken from a Jazz festival in central London back in 2015.
I love playing with these guys, I feel free to be myself with them, hence why I’m rocking things up a bit here.
That being said I’ve always tried to push myself into the Jazzier side of things to help me grow and develop as a Musician…
It’s far from my best performance, as I recall I couldn’t hear myself too well so the intonation is rather sketchy at points but it was a fun memory that I wanted to share.
Wishing everyone a great weekend. Ciao for now.

exactly, I don't see what the big deal is. Its 2021. Does anyone stick to one genre anymore? I sure don't.
A perfect demonstration of why not to take categories too seriously. Jazz, pop, rock.....this is uncategorisable and simply great !
Yes mate, I agree, Music is music right? I'm so pleased you enjoyed the clip. All the best mate. 👍🎸🙏
You just described fusion. That's what this is.
I thought it was really good
Amen....a good chord progression gives a good.bass line gives a good percussive feel...which ideally will.play off the whole.ensemble.... by enchancing a vocalist or soloist
For too many categories there's days
That guy most certainly was at the RIGHT gig. He was on point with those licks for sure. Fuckin mint bro 👌
What I was thinking wth
And now everybody knows with a classic click bait title.
Rest of the band was on top of it too, you could tell they were all in sync. Kinda a weird title but a sweet jam.
Agree that is Jazz music. Wrong title of video.
I definitely heard THE lick a few times lol
This should be named “When you know you’re at a jazz festival”
Great playing, with feeling, is never out of place.
Uncle Doug what are you doing here???
Well said that man

Yes Father🤣🤣🤣🤣
Hahaha, well there are more clips coming from this concert... Let's just say there is a relevant theme as far as 'The Lick' is concerned. It's not over until it's over. 😂🤣
Coming soon.... 👍🎸🙏
That's why I love Jazz Fusion genre. Liquid tension experiment showed us that music has no borders if you are good enough

That notion was well in evidence by the originator .
In Mahavisnu orchestra there re almost a metal attitude to it., with raunchy guitar a proto speed metal double basd drums....
While beign Symphonic, jazzy, indian and funky
LTE was not the first to do so, nor are they really jazz fusion
I agree 100% about being “good enough”, but practice and immersion into an instrument is the single most satisfying feeling I’ve ever had.
true..there shud b more jazz fusion fests
best of i heard last 2 years on guitar
I love how you're dancing around the lick, the entire solo, without ever actually playing it. Really cool.
Haha, thanks Andy... Cool that you caught that.. All the best 👍🎸🙏
@@AlexHutchingsMusic ahah that's true, at 1:19 you're kinda doing it with abbelishments
(Great playing btw, what effect are you using at 1:30?)
@@arthurverlaine6434 I’m not sure what Alex uses personally, but I get that effect from the “wack’d” switch setting on an Ibanez CF7
@@arthurverlaine6434 the vibrato handle is facing away from the headstock, he gives it a whack and it makes that sound kind of like a spring
@@jackgreenwood1817 yeah I noticed that too but I wasn't sure that it was all. If it is, I didn't know you could make that sound just by positioning the vibrato handle towards outside and playing it like that. To me it sounded so much like phase-based effect with some kind of fast rate, but he doesn't seem to press anything in the moment. So it's just the handle and the ampli making that?
Honestly, no one ever made anything truly great without bending the “rules”. I thought it was a magnificent performance.
Thank you so much mate. Much appreciated. 👍🎸🙏
Honestly, this sounds more jazz to me than a lot of the stuff my "jazz fan" neighbor forces me to listen to every time he visits. A lot of what he shows me are just pop songs with a bucketful of grace notes thrown in.
"I guess you guys aren't ready for that yet. But your kids are gonna love it."
🤣😂🤣🎸🤘
me: "wow, really good arpeggios"
jazz fanbase: "why are you hitting the right notes?"
20 yrs ago learning to improv in jazz band: "Dangit..wrong note..." Present day: "Let me play every wrong note...repeatedly"
@@Sully365 repetition is the key. That's what makes it legit :D
@@SyntheticFuture I have literally played a minor second 72 times in a row just to get that point across... Repeated often enough, your brain will accept it.
Laughing so much,
thank you!
@@SyntheticFuture Repetition legitimizes. Repetition legitimizes. Repetition legitimizes. Repetition legitimizes. Repetition legitimizes. Repetition legitimizes. Re
There is not one single guitar player no matter what genre they are interested in, would dislike this. This is a very very skillful solo; timed perfectly, hitting the right harmonies and notes with a very high bpm. No one can argue it's good. I don't believe any Jazz player and listener would have a complaint for this solo, he was in groove the whole time, and that's what matters really.
It's just some shit improv - calm er down
@@shasteNB It wasn't shit. Those arpeggios were pretty tight. And all true jazz has improvisational elements. I think people are just confused about the title of the video, jazz IS trading melody variations and solos back and forth on the fly, jammin. That's literally what it is, it's why jazz "standards" exist, to get people accustomed to this with tunes they can play around with.
There were good points in the solo and I like that he did play with feeling. But for the style of music I listen to and play, it was just a bunch of aimless notes at a few points and I probably wouldn't have stuck around to watch this band (Jammy and improvisational aren't my thing). This guy is clearly a virtuosic performer, but virtuosity isn't the golden ticket to me enjoying music.
@@verbageddon Well, the point of my comment is to address the title of the video, which says this solo is not suited for a Jazz performance; not to say that it is the greatest performance or solo ever.. at all. This is exactly what Jazz is and meant to be, exchanging riffs, solos, jamming with each other on the fly. Showing how you feel during playing and playing the way how you feel right at that moment. For sure, a more structured song might be much easier to follow and enjoy, like a Rock or a Metal song. But all in all, just for this video, I rest my case about this is a hell of a Jazz performance and title is not doing justice if it's not sarcastic.
@zortlak speak for yourself. That shit was self indulgent crap.
Man, the dynamics and variation of tone usage is such an extra dimension to what would have been an already exceptional solo. That was extremely enjoyable to listen and watch!
Excellent comment and well expressed. I love musicians like these. They stretch the boundaries of what contemporary or traditional jazz is thought to be. I’d definitely pay to go see these guys play live.
In my opinion, it was a perfect solo.
Thank you so much Brody. 👍🎸🙏
Couldn't agree more. Not a dull moment!
Jazz is where Rock came from. A lot of Jazz and Blues in Rock's music history.
When your mum buys you lessons with the Jazz teacher but you're a metal head inside

i didnt hear anything resembling metal, just a pure jazz jam
Absolutely killed it! Well played dude I really enjoyed that!
Thank you so much man... 👍🎸🙏
Damo! Keep up the great work
I can tell its a jazz festival simply by listening to his guitar tone. His distortion & gain tone is soft very clean enabling you to hear every note perfectly. I listen to extreme metal, most of their guitarists tones are the furthest thing from this.
listen @ 1:30 - there through the remainder of the song is the thing to watch out for and I think the reason that the video has this title. Remember you can only forget what you once knew, if you watch up to this point it's like he knew, and then at 1:30 he forget because the change was so epic.
I like how when he does the weedley-deedleys you can really tell the difference between the weedles and the deedles.
All I hear guitarists talk about on RUclips is how important dynamics are, we’ll it’s doesn’t get more dynamic than going Van Halen to Wes Montgomery and back to Van Halen in the matter of minutes lol. You did great!
I didn't hear any Van Halen. When you said Van Halen, I expected to hear some show off, flashy stuff that isn't musical. Instead I heard a range of emotions. Most of the fastest phrases sounded like Joe Pass and Al Dimeola
To Mr Night Òwl and Co, that's not the kind of dynamics they're talking about man.
@@tony69em Wow, the fact that you said that VH isn’t musical and doesn’t have emotion 🤯
I didn't hear Wes Montgomery, Joe Pass, Al Dimeola or Eddie Van Halen. What were you guys listening to???
@@jhgust ok.. what did you hear? I love how different people are hearing different things. Obviously, he has his own sound but what we are discussing is influences. So, what do you hear?

Let's be honest. Alex is #2. #1 is Guthrie. I adore both and have seen both live.
@@AlexHutchingsMusic no my friend, you earned it. You're a versatile musician, you're chops and shreds never ceases to amazed me.
The first time I saw your videos was the time you're doing a demo on boss ME-70.

What are you're suggestions for me to be able to play creatively like that?
You're reply means a lot to me too.
@@Shiftozoid you've forgotten to include Allan Holdsworth. 😂
I'm not hating Guthrie, he's good - god-like even, but the jam session between Alex and Guthrie proves that their skills are on tie.
Honestly, I wanted to play like them, but I can't understand how jazz/fusion works.
I can't return myself to studying the chords again.

This solo combines RATM-like hard riff, intuitive feel of melody, bluesyness, bebop lines and pentatonic shred at the same time. Insane.
I'm not a jazz expert but I think everything in that was really cool. Some blues, some traditional jazz solo elements, and that Tom Morello-ish part. And some serious shredding :D Interesting soloing indeed, thanks for sharing this!
Hi Alex. I think that in this solo you are, rightly, following the evolution of the song, first softer then harder and more decisive. Thanks and good weekend to you too

Jesus. I've been playing 35 years and you are definitely one of the most versatile players I've ever heard. Vai is my #1 and you def. brought that to the forefront. I never realized how tasteful his psycopathy could sound in a REAL r&b/ jazz setting, arguably playing the other styles better than he could play it.
