  • After researching central vacuum systems for my workshop, I decided to build my own central vacuum system. I used a 6-gallon bucket underneath a DIY cyclone. The system works great and emptying the bucket is much easier than emptying the shop vac. I also have the unit mounted near the ceiling so that it is out of the way. I use a remote control outlet to turn the system on and off.

FINALLY - someone who didn't buy a cyclone but made one FOR FIVE DOLLARS. You the man.

I built what doesn't make sense to buy, and I buy what doesn't make sense to build. :)

I just got all my tools into my new home and will be mimicking your setup here. Thanks for taking the time to record, edit, upload, and work hard to help others. Video request: give us a day in the life of a civil engineer! (I found you because of Essential Craftsman)

The Migraine Guy I'm working on another channel focusing on civil engineering jobs and training. Maybe a few months though. Thanks for input.

Thanks for this, really interesting. Can you expand on the point you made about certain tools crushing your bucket? I have that exact problem on my table saw and haven't figured out why or how to fix it! Thanks.

It sounds like your table saw is very air tight. When your dust collection system is attached to it, it can't pull air through that tool fast enough, so it "vacuums" the bucket as well. What you will need is to put in a wye at the table saw. One side of the wye will attach to your table saw. The other part will be just open and will allow enough air to feed into the system. I would then restrict this open port until it doesn't crush your vacuum. My 2" pipe needs a 1" diameter port in order to not crush the bucket.

You built your own cyclone instead of buying one, but then paid $40 for the small port hose kit?

Sounds too much like you're reading something when explaining what you've done. I couldn't finish watching.
