Shaq 40pts & Penny Hardaway 38pts vs. Spree 40pts & Tim Hardaway 15pts/22asts (1994)

  • Wow! I don't even know where to begin. This easily was one of the most entertaining NBA games I've ever seen, the boxscore with those 4 statlines seems to be out of this world. There is no word to describe what Shaquille O'Neal does to the Warriors frontline in this game. 40 points (15/20 FG), 18 rebounds, I think there are about 8 dunks and he single-handedly gets every Warriors big in foul trouble. Penny Hardaway is sort of playing the point guard position for the Magic as he did during his first years in the league. He dishes out some beautiful passes to get 13 assists and also scores 38 points (16/24 FG).
    Timmy Hardaway goes for a career-high of 22 assists. I wouldn't call some of them as actual assists, yet this is the NBA. He also scores 15 points, although his shot selection was off during this game. Latrell Sprewell's performance is brilliant as well. He rests only for a single minute and scores 40 points. Spree also had some nice assists (6), so I had to include them also.
    Now, if you're an NBA fan you cannot dislike this. What you have here are four of those performances in the same game, okay. There's also Hubie Brown getting excited and an entertaining ending with an overtime. December 16, 1994.

    I agree, Penny was a beast back then, and my favorite player. I remember him dropping 39 on the Bulls during the 95' season, with Pippen guarding him for most of that game, this was before MJ returned later that season. The following year (Jordan's 1st year back post retirement) with Shaq out injured Penny outplayed and outscored Jordan head to head I think like 36 or 38 to Jordan's 28, which prompted Stephen A. Smith to write a article in the Philly sports page saying Penny had surpassed Jordan

  • @seenyour31

    Of course that was premature as Jordan went on to re-establish himself as the game's premier player, and the Bulls went on the spank Penny and Orlando in their other match-ups that season and swept them in the ECF. However Penny imo was the only player during that time with the skill level who would have been able to match up with Jordan, and would have been an All-time great player if not for injury.

    • @Mario-re2qp
      @Mario-re2qp 5 лет назад +1

      That was a veteran Bulls (coached by the best - Phil Jackson) one of the deepest teams ever, against one of the youngest (coached by Brian nobody) with no depth past the 5 starters. Jordan was still in his prime in his 10th season and by that time he had improved his shooting, adding that fadeaway shot. Penny hadn't even reached his prime, only his third season, with a recent knee injury that never healed nor was treated properly to rush him back quick (mistake that cost his career), so he was not at full speed athletically for that 96 playoff series, where Horace Grant only played the first game. So with Ho. Grant out and Penny not 100% that was an easy win for the Bulls. The Magic matched up well with the Bulls starters but here were shorthanded, had a very inferior bench plus a coach who had no resume to be coaching in the NBA. If it were the other way around, I find it hard to believe the Bulls would beat Orlando without Rodman plus a Jordan with a recovering knee injury

    They are sorta similar but disagree that Wade was better. Penny was a much better shooter and passer, while Wade is the slightly better slasher (we are talking about Penny in his prime). Overall scoring ability I think was a wash. Penny's post-game was also better. Both are/ were pretty clutch but Penny might have a slight edge in that too.

    Wade only averaged more assists than Hardaway a couple yrs and Wade dominated the ball more. Wade is/ was the better slasher but not by much. Penny didn't have a 50% FG% from only relying on his shot. Also, in 90's bball, you didn't have handchecking or touch fouls so prevalent now and which used to be Wade's bread and butter. I
