  • When I was in high school I had a goal to still be able to dunk when I was 50. The last time I dunked, I was 48. Several months ago while experiencing yet another midlife crisis, I set a goal and accepted the challenge to dunk at my current age. Here is the result of a 6'2" 54 year old trying to dunk. See my prior dunk topic videos for how it progressed.

Hey YFQ, that was a great video! I'm 65 and only about 5'8" and I can still get up and down! BUT, there are a couple of things to that. #1, I don't drink (at least not anyone). #2, I'm a bachelor and I cook for myself at home. None of that Wendy's, Mickey Ds, the Chinese food lunch specials, White Castles, or any of that. So #3, I can still get up and down even with & against boys who are young enough to be my grandsons! AND I wind up being the guy with the ball. That's because probably much like you, I grew up watching all the legendary guards like Clyde, "The Pearl", Pete Maravich (I never did care for the name "Pistol" too much), and of course Jerry West (RIP), when they were in their prime. Yes, there may be RUclips videos about them, but they didn't GROW UP watching them! 🏀

The younger generations won’t appreciate how great this accomplishment is. In high school and university I could do windmills, through the leg, all sorts of trick dunks … easy. At 42 I have to work to dunk and they are no better than the ones thrown down here. If I can dunk this well at 54 I’ll be more than happy.

Hey guy if you read my reply and at 42, are still able to get and down, then you're already ahead of the game! And me personally, I always played the off point shooting guard position. I played JHS and some high school ball but as I said in my post, I know HOW to play! Many of these younger guys don't because they're too busy playing NBA 2K! 🙄🙄🏀

if you can do a dunk at your hight at 44 i think its amazing!!! at your age i still could dunk but not easy, and not if i was hunted by a defender just if i was free to take a perfect jump. now at 62 i could just touch the rim last summer, but with special exercise just for jumping i think its 50 percents chance i can do the eaisest dunk on 10 feet rim. Fun to have a goal cause the exercise is rather boring ha ha! Good luck!

The game got heated and I dunked all over a kid that played for Villanova back then. I tried it again and didn't end well the second time lol. Had a 6 hour surgery and the doctor told me back then that I'd never play again. 3 travel team championships later I'm training both my boys and they both can play. I'm still in pretty good shape but can't dunk anymore. The lift is gone since that surgery. But can still get rim pretty easy. Great video my man.

This IS all relevant: I was born in Seattle in 1973, where I grew up. Sonics and Blazers fan. Japanese-American and male. 5'10", which was a decent height for an Asian male of my generation. I was never a great jumper, but not the worst, either. In my prime (Age 20-27, when I was also the closest to "handsome" as I've ever been), I could get the net automatically, the padding on the bottom of the backboard easily, and could even nick the bottom of the glass backboard with the tip of my finger. I never touched the rim, let alone dunked, on a 10 foot hoop. I'm 51 in 2024. In 2016 when I was 43, I accicentally slipped in the shower, and tore my achilles heel, and that was painful. Then in 2019 at 46, shooting ALONE, I did a simple Christian Laettner dribble, step step, jump off the left foot, shoot with the right hand, and I popped "that tendon, on the BACK of my LOWER leg." Ever since that, I knew that I was DONE doing anything more than shooting around. I'm an injury waiting to happen. As it was, I long thought that I'd live to be 48, and pass away. My most strenuous exercise is doing the treadmill at 3.6 MPH. No more running, no jumping. When I shoot around, my rebounds are flat-footed, Arvydas Sabonis style.

I’m 59 and I feel like I’m 18. But I’m only 5’ 10”. However, I can bench 300 lbs pretty easily. And at 50 I was squatting 495 lbs twice with no belt, and I weighed 250 pounds.
Don’t let age trick your mind into thinking you’re old! I workout 45 minutes six times a week burning over 780 calories on an elliptical machine. You just have to keep MOVING!
Great dunk. Come back at 60 and do it again!

I know how you feel. I've always wanted to dunk and now almost 50, I believe if I put in the work, I'll get there.

20 years and 40 pounds ago, I could dunk. I was a track and field athlete, mostly distance events. I'm only 5' 11" and could out rebound most of the tall guy, having said that rebounding is about timing and boxing out. Good luck in your quest.

Great job devil dog. How tall are you? I had the same goal last year before I turned 50 but never focused in...now headed to 51 in a month and at 270 lbs and 5'11..touching the net might be a challenge 😅

I'll never forget the first time I went straight up off both feet and grabbed the rim. It came as a surprise because the best I could do is barely touch rim with one hand. It's an amazing feeling to accomplish. I was a junior in high school at 5'10". It wasn't until 3 years later at 6'0" age 19 i started dunking with a 39 inch vertical. It's hard getting there and once I accomplished that feat, I gave up after about a 3 week period of dunking. Never in a game but it was a goal of mine as a kid.
