Penny was shooting over double teams with askins, majerle, leonard, and mashburn trying to stop him...the only person that could stop him was himself...his hesitation dribble and stepbacks are pretty much unguardable. He would have been top 5 but he still my all time favorite.
I've seen that step back from players like Daron Williams and James Harden before, but the best thing about this one is how Penny put to moves together so smooth it looked like one fluid move. He went for the spin move, saw the defender shook and went to the step back. One of the best moves I ever saw.
@facemobb02 You either don't play ball or can't see. He started the move outside the line and ended inside. By today's standard it would be considered a bad shot. So no the move didn't end where it started and it wasn't a full 180 spin either, since Penny adjusted to the defender.
I️ met penny when I was a young kid and one of the classy people in the world give me his shoes and the penny arm band still a fan he needs to be a hall of fame in the NBA
Even after coming back from injuries I would stay up late watching Penny and the Magic on their west Coast games and from the start you can see the morale of the team, the difference that Penny made when he was on the court. As a Penny fan it still hurts till this day not being able to see Penny grow into his NBA potential, he was a great player.
During the height of the Michael Jordan era and his brief retirement period, during the 1994 and 1995 NBA seasons my favourite players to watch offensively was Grant Hill and Penny Hardaway. These 2 guys were unbelievable! How good would they have been if it wasn't for the curse of injuries. What could've been. I am very confident they would have won multiple NBA titles. They were untouchable. They had all the skills, the whole package. The best basketball players of their generation in my opinion.
One of the best times I've had being a Magic fan was watching this game and the one before it. I had never seen Penny dominate by himself like he did in those games, and against a Pat Riley coached team which prided itself on it's defense.
He was doing "Kobe" moves before Kobe even thought of doing them. Penny will forever be my fave NBA player of all time. I'll never forget when he dopped 40+ in back to back games or when he shook the hell outta Reggie Miller
back to back 40 points game in playoffs against a pat riley team, one of the best defensive team ever.. who else could have done that besides "air jordan"?
Classic penny one of my favorites , his whole career had so much potential. It also helped that he had some of the dopest kicks on court peep the foamposites lol
Anfernee Hardaway was a multi- talented and a versatile basketball player that can play both guard positions and sometimes the small forward position. His post-up shake move, drop-step fadeaway turnaround jumper was virtually unstoppable. No one could guard him. He played at lot like Pistol Pete Marivich, Rick Barry and Magic Johnson, and Phil Collins. He was a unselfish player that had a pass first, shoot second mentality. He was a fundamentally sound basketball player with deceptive quickness with the ball. He thrived on defense, too.
@@TheTonytone77 Probably so because he was more of a team player getting others involved before himself but then again he mite average 30+ he could easily do it especially how soft the league is now.
What's crazy is if Penny never gets hurt and Shaq never leaves Orlando then Penny probably wins 2-3 rings and goes down as a top 3 point guard of all time. He'd be right up there with Magic, Curry & Isiah. Skill wise he's up there with the best of them. I'd say Magic, Curry, Isiah, D.Rose, Penny, Kyrie, Lillard, CP3, Arenas, Westbrook, Payton & Morant are the 12 most skilled point guards I've ever seen.
This is how good Penny is, this 1996-97 Heat team is a very tough team to beat. They could win championship(s) in this era. Coached by Pat Riley, Mourning stands at 6'10 could be selected as a 1st team center, shooters like Majerle, Leonard, not sure if it includes Mashburn, not only great shooters but tough defenders also. Tim hardaway better than prime KYrie Irving at that time. At this video, Penny just came from a very bad injury. The injury that slowed down his career. If only Penny could have a 5 to 7 healthy years in the NBA, he could top Lebron and Kobe in their primes.
