The key things..... 3400 cargo space, easy to modify. Upgrade the reactor, shields, and then just toss on some turrets. It might seem stupid, but having that crazy cargo space will vastly reduce your inventory issues. Go do missions, get on ship, dump it all, just keep the minimum on you. It will take you a long time to get anywhere near the cargo capacity provided you regularly sell excess gear off whenever you see a vendor with credits. You will know you are looking at the right ship if in targeting modes you see a bunch of cargo containers in the hull.
As I say in every ship building video I come across that mentions dockers: the slim docker is the best docker since it is the only docker I know of that fits on the underside of the ship no matter the landing gear used.
I'm about 30 hours into the first playthru so I haven't put much into my ship. However, I did grab the Mantis and heavily modified it (I think the cargo and loading bay are the only two og parts left). Cool part is that the Spacers will still see it as a Mantis ship and run terrified when they see you. Kind of like Tiger Fear of World War 2. :)
I put six Vanguard Obliterator Autoprojectors in a single bank. (Join Vanguard to get access. Warning, they are expensive.) They each only require two power. Those six rip through ships like they were butter. I have no other weapons. Don't need them. I modded the Mantis quest ship, put those particle cannons on it, kept the two ultra high tech OP engines and dropped the other two low tech engines, as they were completely unnecessary. Each of those two engines use only two power, so four power for engines. I am still fairly early game and the best class A shield I have found thus far uses only four power. So weapons, engines and shield all together use only 20 power. I put a 20 power powerplant on the ship. I've noticed that the main things missing from the outpost shipbuilder is the 2x2 modules and some 3x2 modules (like the mess hall) But you can go to the specific ship yard, buy those modules, attach them in ANY fashion to your ship, then fly to your outpost to make the final build with the vast majority of all 5 manufacturer's parts at your disposal.
Why not just enter the shipbuilder there, add it where you want it, then go back for anything else? You don't actually have to fly the ship your building to the yard.
You don't need to match modules to the reactor class. So long as the module is at or below the reactor's class, you'll be fine. If you have a class C reactor, you could use all class A modules. But you can't use class B weapons on a class A reactor. Pretty sure that's what you meant, but it sounded unclear to me.
My biggest complaint with ship building is the way the do the Habs. You can't see the layout untill you finish building, pay, leave, and go board your ship to run around. Also, you may find the perfect layout, and them swap manufacturers to get a better outside look for your ship and ruin the internal path to the Habs. All the Habs are made so that each of it's anchor points can be and entry/exit point, so idk why I can't just manually choose which one. Or at the very least be able to see where the game is deciding to put doors and ladders...
My ship is called the Starscape Mariner! We're exploring the deep, aye?! Might as well act the part! I love the random encounter of the dude singing a sea shanty. So awesome
My newest ship that I built was from an ecliptic stiletto. I kept the general form factor of it but replaced everything with Nova ship parts and made a minor edition using the massive nova reverser thrusters with some end caps to make a reverse delta wing structure and used a different end cap to have a sloped bit going to the tail section to get rid of some of the hard lines. I officially called it the nova stiletto but it looks more like a beetle so I changed the landing gear from the kind on the starting ship that looks like legs to the other set of nova landing gear you can get on titan (sol system)
First own build I named "Rage Quake" (sounds better in German: Zornbeben). My main ship (class C) later on I will call "Litany of Death" (German "Litanei des Todes").
Along side the Vanguard shield, the Vanguard Obliterator Autoprojector is also a great weapon. Only require 2 power each. Deal equal damage to both hull, shield and have a 3000m range. Using cannons to deal more damage to hull means dropping 2000 m off your range AND needing more power + needing a second weapon class to deal with shields. I honestly think particle beams are OP and should have their range reduced while laser and ballistics have their range buffed.
Near the start of the game, I just went for 4x Particle Disruptor 3300s and an upgraded reactor on the Frontier. Simplified power management immensely for combat and they deal decent damage to shields and hull alike with good range. Power hogs but they'll do until I can afford a custom ship!
i love shieldbreaker, one of my fave pre-made ships... ive put a ton of upgrades on it using shipbuilder, it's deadly af now.. a bit large of a ship but i got it balanced really well now
it was made that way probably because the c-class ship the highest one a single reactor will generally fill up all the power anyway so if you want to be a ship captain you would progress through all the ranks and such.
I got two things to say first is thank you for actually taking about the auto guns no one’s talked about how they work so ya and a 2 is you don’t know joy till you’ve been able to jump from one side to the other side of the system I have a ship a real big boy that let’s me jump whenever whenever and no one’s able to touch me
If you are going to start building a big ship start with Daimos Shipyard, that's what most of my ship is because I still dont have access to a landing pad
Also, the order you place each hab module really matters. This determines where the doors/ladders are placed. And sometimes if you attach them in the wrong order, you may see the errors saying that the docker or the landing bay does NOT connect to your cockpit.
if you get the unattached modules error and cant find the unattached piece. just double click the ship to select all parts and drag it in any direction. then you will see the unattached module.
Odyssey. Like my beloved high mileage daily driver, it gets the job done without a lot of fuss, an entire narwhal fits in the boot and it's reasonably driveable. Plus drive range is absolutely nuts with all the fuel onboard. And, you know, it seats 8 comfortably 😁
added hint for cargo they are a good way to both bulk out a ships frame and also to use as external parts to make the ship looked lived in or used as they will always have looks that differ from the normal hab parts or other parts you can add
Point of information re: Gear and Landing Bays: Some of the Gear is gargantuan, and the attachment point is much higher than the landing bay can be. The Nova Galactic gear on the Frontier is 1 level higher than the bay, for example. One of the Hope gear is 2 levels above, I think?
My ship is a highly modified Stronghold named “The Ass Taker” I have 4 EM weapons and a couple extra rockets in case someone really deserves it. Have to board everyone to be a real space pirate
There’s also the meta tactic taking into account that the AI always targets the center of mass on your ship. So, if you put a long spar out the side, or ideally make a square shape with an empty center, the AI will try to hit a narrow target or even empty space.
Just finish the rangers quest line to get a pretty solid ship free. That will give you a good main ship. It is honestly better than most B class ships ive seen.
The Scythe, based on a bird of prey or a cyclon it is a ship that I have upgraded from a to b to c as my pirate life grew. Something that a lot of people seem to miss is that most designs for an all in one hab have a kitchen you can cook at and some habs do not have side doors. so you can use them to force entrances where you want also the 1x1 crew passage hab will be used for leaders if it can be you can also cause a ladder based on your docking locations. For example, I have a 2-level ship and I want the ladder up to be in one spot so I place the docking to the ground under the location and the docking location to the station on top of the 2nd level this is where my leader up will be to my 2nd level.
My first ship is the Cloudknife, and she’s a little monster of a B-Class. Just started working on a C-class to be an all purpose sort of “exploration hauler” and I need a good name still. ….and a better design. Usually takes me some time to really get everything right, over multiple shipyards and modifications.
I named my ship Froggeh. I used the Vindicator as a base, and its end result after customization reminded me of a frog, so I named it that. It’s a bit buggy to get in and out of for some reason, though. Sometimes it loads me under the ship, and I can’t escape unless I reload a save. I’m definitely going to be getting a new ship soon for that reason alone.
my newest ship is called the horizon, kinda took inspiration from the exploration based name of the frontier, it’s a huge cargo hauler and i’m very proud of it
The Haemosu. I, err, borrowed it because of its looks and cargo space, but now it's a completely different beast, complete with all 2x1 habs handpicked from different manufacturers to make and contribute to a coherent build. Chances are I will also rebuild it eventually in New Game +10 both to have it and to honor its original lenders.
I wish they had an auto power management perk or ship part, or companion, full power to the weapons when you fire, longer you hold down the more your power drains across grav/shields/engines. its a little clunky swapping between them, and i never feel like am fully utilising my firepower.
I'm still running the Frontier, there's hardly any original parts left, I just add a number on the end to indicate the version every time I rebuild it (currently Frontier IV, Class B).
Things I'd love to see added to the shipbuilder [as a console player]: -Customizable view/navigation controls for the builder -Ability to edit door + ladder locations -Unattached part selector -Ability to combine different weapons of the same type into the same weapon slot -Paint layers + skins + logos -Ability to see/swap the interior layouts + styles and more options or tiers for those pre-made elements beyond the manufacturers 'Decrepit' or 'Pirate' or 'Lived-In, etc.' with a few options for each and a bonus Faction one from the Traits or a mission] -New utility or equipment options [like the scrambler that enhances smuggling] like a module/hab that enhances a skill or lets you switch between skills [like there's a scanner that improves planetary scanning when in space, but once you land you can hit a switch and it now buffs your hand scanner] or etc. -Ability to manufacture/edit your own prefab habs or other components [a hybrid between base-building/manufacturing pipelines and shipbuilding] -Space stations and orbital/asteroid bases [ but maybe those would be an outpost mechanic/system]...
My ship is named Grid-Iron. Reason I like Grid-Iron is in the game Operation Flashpoint Dragon Rising which I played as a wee lad, one of the call signs for an Abrams tank in the game was "Grid-Iron" and I thought it was really cool.
My ship is Starling ... because she sings across the stars. 😂 Started life as a random Discovery class ship (I wasnt going to spend credits on the Frontier as it belongs to Constellation and not me.) but the first thing I did was rip her apart and rebuild her.
I heavily modified the Frontier into a class A all arounder, now called the Far Frontier. I turned the ship from the Mantis into a sleek fast corvette with a wicked yellow and black paint scheme called the Hornet. I am planning a class B exploration frigate on the parents gift called the Pathfinder. A class B destroyer on the Eagle frame which will be the Hellcat ( after the WW2 fighter, not the muscle car). And a big beast of a class C ship on the Kepler named Kitty Hawk after a carrier I once served on. After that who knows, so many possibilities.
As far as i know specific bridges dont show up at landing pad ship builder, youd have to go direct to the manufacturer. Also make sure to save before doing anything with your ship, the order you place Habs will determine the layout, there are a few that have set doors and ladders. play around with that, save, continue, repeat. If anything physically glitches with your ship ( like unable to enter, or clipping issues), try making a savable ship build change
I have built 5 ships so far. TECHNICALLY my favorite ship is called Razorleaf, but it has been Theseus'd to the point that it does not resemble its former self.
I’m technically still rocking the Frontier but it’s really a ship of theseus thing. Basically the docking bay and one of the habs is original. The rest is a maxed out c rank beast with maxed weapon systems. At this point the only upgrade I could make is if they allowed us to double up on parts 😂
That one is great and it can go under your landing bay at least on the bay I have lol. I also think they have the best landing gears they’re cheap have a landing thrust of 3 and only take 1 node to attach, though they don’t have any side attachments
I did "file not found" background because I wanted my character to be a young adult just leaving home; the 3 skills you start with were a great bonus, though, being already opened into combat, tech, and physical. Just had to get a tiny bit of social on my own. Not very helpful for the ground pounder missions I have right now though...it's rough. Don't be like me, restock ammo and meds REGULARLY!!
its a shame that when you do the flight check it doesnt highlight sections on the actual ship to show whats wrong or where something gone wrong , the amount of times ive gotten the unattachted ship module warning and not understanding where ive gone wrong
My Big Rig Hauler ship is named "Porkchop Express" bonus points if you know what thats from ;) and my "jack of all trades" ship is the RazorCrest , and my light fast fighter ship is called the "SwordFish" ....."See You later Space Cowboy..."
Yup, my limitation trying to get places so far has been fuel so I got two giant tanks on there now. my jump is only 17. I usually stop at vendors I like before hitting a quest location to sell loot, so I don’t really need to jump that far in the first place
So far I’ve been just making changes to the Frontier. My goal has been smaller, lighter, faster. The Mars shipyard so far has been my best friend. I replaced the cockpit, landing bay and top front structure pieces with lighter ones with similar stats. I got a lighter reactor with more output. I replaced both engines with units that have more power yet are lighter. So far I’ve gotten maneuverability to 97. Now I’m looking for a lighter habitat module without giving up mount points or the bed. 😃
11:38 some dockers (like the slim docker) can be placed on the underside of the ship if you dont want it in the way of components or habs on the upper decks. (My small bounty hunting ship is the Artemis, and my big ass ship is the Enceladus.)
Me, one hour ago: "Eugh, I wish I could just have all the ship parts in one place. Time to look for a mod...oh, doesn't exist. Sad." This video: Moron, build a large pad at your outpost. Me, having already built a large pad so I could land at my outpost: "..."
My ship is so chunky with it's 17 LY and 25 maneuverability. Just max out your shields and weapons and you can even survive the Key spacestation. You might need 1 ship parts, but its a fun flex.
My ship is the Kusanagi. It's only a class A but has a reactor that puts out 28 power, and a dome shield that puts out 400 something shield. It crews 5, with passenger room for 4, a lot of storage, and manages to keep 100 mobility, and like 24 jump distance. The Kusanagi 2 is even better. A glitch let me place 2 reactors, so it has like 48 power, 2 of those Shields, and a few extra guns. It looks like trash tho, because it's a miss-match of parts, and I paint my ships last. So after I built this ship and took it out to test it, it throws errors(multiple reactors/shields) at me whenever I try and take it back into ship builder to paint it. But I'll be damned if I'm gonna undo it.

I have a upgraded Razorleaf, and figured some of what you tell here by myself. Still learned some interesting details here. 👍🏻
Excellent ship building guide if you already know the basics! This is the tutorial I've been looking for. Nice job!
Near the start of the game, I just went for 4x Particle Disruptor 3300s and an upgraded reactor on the Frontier. Simplified power management immensely for combat and they deal decent damage to shields and hull alike with good range. Power hogs but they'll do until I can afford a custom ship!
Look into the Vanguard Obliterators. Lower damage per shot, but they're burst fire and use less power.
@@ConfusedRaccoonYep, discovered them and been using them ever since.
i love shieldbreaker, one of my fave pre-made ships... ive put a ton of upgrades on it using shipbuilder, it's deadly af now.. a bit large of a ship but i got it balanced really well now
My current main ship upgraded as well its decimates..renamed it to shipbuster instead..
a really useful video NorZZa. Thank you for your hard work.
It has answered a lot of questions
Glad it was helpful!
Helpful thing - Nexus has a mod to remove the limit on reactors you can place. Thoughts it was stupid I couldn't place two, so I recommend it.
it was made that way probably because the c-class ship the highest one a single reactor will generally fill up all the power anyway so if you want to be a ship captain you would progress through all the ranks and such.
Think I will call my nex ship "it just works" in honour of past mistakes😂
Nova AIO berth A comes with cooking and research station, on of my personal small ship favorites
Thanks
No, thank you!!
Thank you!!! Im so glad you went through the actually nuts and bolts of it all, i understand a lot better now. Cant wait to design my own ship.
To max out Pilot Skill easily - join the UC and spam the simulator. All the ships destroyed in there count towards the perk
I have only skirted around making my first ship, but this video is excellent. Loads of helpful info explained well thank you
if you get the unattached modules error and cant find the unattached piece. just double click the ship to select all parts and drag it in any direction. then you will see the unattached module.
God damn it was a struggle getting through this video. The amount of times I had to rewind to figure what you're saying is nuts.
The Kraken. I'm part of the crimson fleet.
Couldn't find where to rename my ship.
I am glad I wtached it untill the end!
Thx!
It's the donut ships from Kingdom Hearts all over again!
Awesome video. Thanks a lot. I’ve been struggling w the building and this has been immensely helpful.
Just finish the rangers quest line to get a pretty solid ship free. That will give you a good main ship. It is honestly better than most B class ships ive seen.
I can't believe there is a way to paint the entire ship at once. I've wasted so much time and feel silly for it. Thank you.
Mine is called Crimson Fleet Pirate, because I can't change it due to a bug... I'm getting used to it!
My newest ship is the Midnight Raven. Black and Purple ship, using the Star Eagle as a base. Named after my pitty, Raven.
The ship I used mainly for my og game was called big Bertha. It had 10k storage and was massive
Built a terrain battle cruiser inspired by StarCraft 1/broodwar and named it the Alduin. It's dark grey with orange highlights. Pretty proud
very informative and answers a lot of quests!
my newest ship is called the horizon, kinda took inspiration from the exploration based name of the frontier, it’s a huge cargo hauler and i’m very proud of it
The Haemosu.
Mine is the Star Ocean! Love the series and figured why not!
Things I'd love to see added to the shipbuilder [as a console player]:
-Customizable view/navigation controls for the builder
-Ability to edit door + ladder locations
-Unattached part selector
-Ability to combine different weapons of the same type into the same weapon slot
-Paint layers + skins + logos
-Ability to see/swap the interior layouts + styles and more options or tiers for those pre-made elements beyond the manufacturers 'Decrepit' or 'Pirate' or 'Lived-In, etc.' with a few options for each and a bonus Faction one from the Traits or a mission]
-New utility or equipment options [like the scrambler that enhances smuggling] like a module/hab that enhances a skill or lets you switch between skills [like there's a scanner that improves planetary scanning when in space, but once you land you can hit a switch and it now buffs your hand scanner] or etc.
-Ability to manufacture/edit your own prefab habs or other components [a hybrid between base-building/manufacturing pipelines and shipbuilding]
-Space stations and orbital/asteroid bases [ but maybe those would be an outpost mechanic/system]...
Thank you! This is supper helpful, and you, sir, are an awesome teacher!
My ship is named Grid-Iron.
Reason I like Grid-Iron is in the game Operation Flashpoint Dragon Rising which I played as a wee lad, one of the call signs for an Abrams tank in the game was "Grid-Iron" and I thought it was really cool.
15:36 Vasco acting as the best figurehead of a ship in the universe
👍 Thanks, I was actually able to watch it and keep up a bit at .75 speed.
I’m going to name mine TP for my Bunghole
My ship is Starling ... because she sings across the stars. 😂
Started life as a random Discovery class ship (I wasnt going to spend credits on the Frontier as it belongs to Constellation and not me.) but the first thing I did was rip her apart and rebuild her.
My ship is Forward T Dawn as I don't have enough characters to put the full name
After that who knows, so many possibilities.
incredibly helpful, thank you! You're gods work, sir.
The Daily Owl, for cargo missions, and the Century Hawk, for smuggling. The Nanosecond Eagle is for shooting.
Don't forget but you can also put your docking station on the bottom of the Ship too
I have built 5 ships so far. TECHNICALLY my favorite ship is called Razorleaf, but it has been Theseus'd to the point that it does not resemble its former self.
This is so incredibly helpful. Thank you! Liked and subscribed. :)
I’m technically still rocking the Frontier but it’s really a ship of theseus thing. Basically the docking bay and one of the habs is original. The rest is a maxed out c rank beast with maxed weapon systems. At this point the only upgrade I could make is if they allowed us to double up on parts 😂
Definitely learned something from this video. Thanks!
Deimos has an ultra slim bottom mounted docker that doesn't really get in the way at all
I'll have to check it out!
That one is great and it can go under your landing bay at least on the bay I have lol. I also think they have the best landing gears they’re cheap have a landing thrust of 3 and only take 1 node to attach, though they don’t have any side attachments
My current ship im building out is the Dream Eater.
The mantis ship ive highly modified I named Dies irae which means the day of wrath.
My character name is Harlock, so of course my ship name is "Arcadia".
its a shame that when you do the flight check it doesnt highlight sections on the actual ship to show whats wrong or where something gone wrong , the amount of times ive gotten the unattachted ship module warning and not understanding where ive gone wrong
If u double click on the ship it will highlight parts that are not attached!
@@wristmas4684 oh really? i didnt know that thanks!
That’s a bug
Mine is the UNSC Warrender. With it's weapons all being Beam weapons it makes short work of any space battle.
My Big Rig Hauler ship is named "Porkchop Express" bonus points if you know what thats from ;) and my "jack of all trades" ship is the RazorCrest , and my light fast fighter ship is called the "SwordFish" ....."See You later Space Cowboy..."
It's all in the reflexes
you win the internet points today sir
My jump distance is at 14 but I added so much fuel that it doesn’t matter I can still jump across the galaxy in one trip
Yup, my limitation trying to get places so far has been fuel so I got two giant tanks on there now. my jump is only 17. I usually stop at vendors I like before hitting a quest location to sell loot, so I don’t really need to jump that far in the first place
It won't work if any two stars in one of the legs of your journey is more than 14ly away from each other.
Jump distance is important yeah, he surely learned about it now. Some system are like 27ly afar and nothing between so...
Nova Captain's Quarters?
11:38 some dockers (like the slim docker) can be placed on the underside of the ship if you dont want it in the way of components or habs on the upper decks.
(My small bounty hunting ship is the Artemis, and my big ass ship is the Enceladus.)
Me, one hour ago: "Eugh, I wish I could just have all the ship parts in one place. Time to look for a mod...oh, doesn't exist. Sad."
This video: Moron, build a large pad at your outpost.
But I'll be damned if I'm gonna undo it.
my upgraded yellow Galileo is called "Sunbeam", and my Custom built insane destruction machine is called "Black Sparrow". It's Cyan.
